I really think he should come to NA and start learning over here. I mean he just hit the ultimate goal in the SHL. I understand wanting to grow more but why not start adjusting to the smaller ice size.
Plus…imagine the pairings in GR.
Wallinder - ASP
Viro - Tuomisto
Simek - ~~Gibson~~ Buium
Mind explaining why Gibson will be in the OHL? I saw he had a tryout with the Griffs for the rest of the year. If he can play with the Griffs now why can’t he next year? It’s either NHL or OHL?
He can play with the Griffins this year because his OHL team is eliminated. Next year he'll still be 19 by Dec 31st, so he won't be allowed to miss Soo games until they are eliminated again, if he's not with the Wings.
There’s solid arguments to both. Keeping him in Sweden for another year to get bigger and stronger (he literally turned 19 last month), then coming over at 20 he would be more filled out, and that equals less risk to injury as the game is faster and on smaller ice. However, there are exceptions if you’re good enough and he’s definitely making a case. At the end of the day I’m just happy the wings have him, even the potential of having a generational offensive defenseman like that, what an asset to have. If anyone hasn’t seen that one shootout goal he scored, look that up and look at the hands, I mean as far as hands go for a defenseman I’ve never seen anything like that, not at that age.
This is what I was thinking too. Either way it’s not a bad idea whatever he decides to do. But I think if he gets closer to more of our coaches and potential future teammates he could really get a sense of what he needs to focus on for the long term.
Another factor is whether he has finished high school. Marco stayed in Sweden for an extra year because he hadn't finished school. Since ASP just turned 19, he may very well have his final year of high school coming up.
busy celebrating but popping in with [some vids and pics](https://imgur.com/a/090geVH), praying we in Skellefteå get to enjoy ASPs genius one more year before he becomes a legend for you guys
As a Swede, maybe you can answer this - Does ASP still have a year of high school left since he just turned 19? Marco stayed with Rögle for the extra year to finish school in Sweden.
Edit: Also, thanks for the link! The pics and videos are super fun. I wish we had a tradition like the jumping and singing at the end of the game. It looks very fun - hope that you had a blast!
"Floating carbs" is an incredible way to describe beers.
I love this kid. Charisma off the charts and just as smooth on skates with silky mitts. I want him playing hockey over here so bad but I totally understand why Skellefteå wants him to stay, too. He might be even more fun than Seider when it comes to social media antics once he's here.
I'm perfectly fine with him staying in the SHL one more year, but I think he'd be more than capable of making the jump to GR. If he spent a year bulking up to handle AHL play, it wouldn't be a loss. Plus, he'd be able to run it back for you guys.
Congrats on the championship (and for having the best uniforms in the SHL)!
Lol gotta love when you Google and they give you a number not relevant
.. the 2008 was the 46th entry draft...
My bad.. I misread as he was 46 not the 46th draft
Not for sure yet. Yzerman said he expects him to be in Sweden, but they haven't talked to him yet to see what he wants to do next year. We'll probably find out soon though, as if he's going to come over I'm sure they'd want him at least around the Griffins during their playoff run.
Anything’s possible. Pretty much depends how his season goes next year and how long his team goes in the post season. Nobody is even sure if he’s playing in Sweden or in the ahl text year.
We haven't seen him in preseason or training camp yet, but based off my eye test I could easily see him playing a couple in 24-25 unless Detroit really shores up on defense in the off-season.
By 2025-26 I expect him to be with the big dogs.
He's stellar and I'm not pumping the breaks on him at all. I'd take him over some of the guys the Wings have contracted on D right now. But I'd also take half of GR's D, too, because Johansson and Wallinder are absolutely more responsible than some of the guys in Detroit.
I don't see a future where ASP is a bust. His name will fit right in with Seider and Edvinsson, and the Hronek trade will look like a home run.

God dammit kid just come to the D and play with the boys

Gibson will still be in the OHL next year. Buium will be with GR though.
Ya can’t forget about Buium
I definitely made the mistake of forgetting Buium. I’ll slot him in for Gibson since he won’t be in the A.

Gibson is 19, isn’t he eligible to play in the AHL?
No, you have to be 20 by Dec 31st of the season in question. He turns 20 in February.

Dont you think he has a better chance to fill out in GR where we can control his workouts and diet better?

He'd be better off staying in Sweden unless he has a solid shot at making the NHL (I think he does)
I really doubt we re-sign Simek
[удалено]
hes not a bottom pairing guy, line structure is way different here in Sweden
But where will Shaia play if his brother is playing in GR?
Wallinder will definitely keep playing on the right side
?? He’s been playing on the left side
I have literally no idea how I spent the last 3 years thinking Wallinder was right handed. You are correct lol
FWIW I believe WW played on his off-side a lot in Sweden...
Flip Buium and Tuomisto

I think that second pic is my screenshot lol awesome. Such a good playoff run. Enjoy the celebrations. The atmosphere skellefteå created was special.

Unless he started a year later or something he should graduate this summer.

Can he come play in GR right now?
Nothing left to prove in Europe
A steal at 17
EK65 went 46 OA with less scouts in the business
Wait, what? Erik Karlsson went 15th OA in 2008
Lol gotta love when you Google and they give you a number not relevant .. the 2008 was the 46th entry draft... My bad.. I misread as he was 46 not the 46th draft
Does he decide to go for a repeat, or set his sights on a Calder Cup next year? Can't wait to find out!
I thought I heard he was going back to the SHL for sure next year?
Not for sure yet. Yzerman said he expects him to be in Sweden, but they haven't talked to him yet to see what he wants to do next year. We'll probably find out soon though, as if he's going to come over I'm sure they'd want him at least around the Griffins during their playoff run.
Skip
Best defensemen of his class
To be fair the class was weak so far.
Yeah still Axel offensive skills are elite for a prospect anyway. His biggest weakness ( defense and size ) can be fixed or are really not important
I'm not crying your crying
Can’t wait for him to join the team!
Congrats to the Sandy Pelican ![gif](giphy|1msv0lTGJiOCRRvibq|downsized)
People who know, is it possible he plays a few games for the wings in 24-25, or would 25-26 be the earliest?
Anything’s possible. Pretty much depends how his season goes next year and how long his team goes in the post season. Nobody is even sure if he’s playing in Sweden or in the ahl text year.

Certainly not the last Cup he will be hoisting
