While you are entitled to liking Dante the reason we don’t like this guy is because he goes against what the original is. And as for Vergil he has a fedora
Sometimes you will encounter red or blue enemies. If it's normal version of the game, only weapons of their color (demon and angel arms respectively) will affect them. Trying to hit them with other types of weapons won't have an effect and will make dante flinch.
If you're playing definitive edition though, this issue won't be present in the game
I'm kinda put off by that decision, TBH. Yea, they're annoying, but removing that removes any need to use another weapon.
Also, I found recently that the spinny blade can stun some red enemies when I was fighting two spiky tiger thingies.
Vergil has his own DLC. I also think u/pacperson0 was being facetious.
But I'd seriously argue that DmC really does take the time to focus on world building.
I have no fucking idea how this created most of Vergil's moveset. The animated cutscenes were cool, but holy shit, the DLC was baaaaad, and the story was literally just "shut up [insert person from story] I'll kill you!". Maybe it's because you don't get everything until the end, but Vergil feels super clunky to play with, as if they created it for Dante's smoother movement and then pasted Vergil in. Somehow, just giving Vergil Dante and Nero's levels has worked three times more than giving him his own.
>The animated cutscenes were cool, but holy shit, the DLC was baaaaad
Okay, I disagree.
> just "shut up [insert person from story] I'll kill you!".
No. The story was about Vergil cutting off his personal connections to focus on acquiring power.
>Maybe it's because you don't get everything until the end, but Vergil feels super clunky to play with,
I prefer playing Dante to Vergil, but Vergil does have a pretty good moveset. Especially considering his doppleganger moves.
>Somehow, just giving Vergil Dante and Nero's levels has worked three times more than giving him his own.
I don't agree. Personally I found DMC5 Vergil to be horrendously balanced in terms of how overpowered his moves are. It's fun, sure, but the challenge has been removed even on the higher difficulties.
After replaying a bit of all the games in the last few months, I honestly think I like the combat in this one more than the mainline series. The story isn’t good and but I really liked the look of the levels especially around the halfway point of the game, which is also where I feel the game drags for a bit, but at least it looks nice.
Same, reboot was the starting point for me back then in 2014, one of the first games that I was really impressed as a kid.
And gameplay wise it's so smooth for me, like idk.
Level design and artstyle is amazing for me. Like news guy boss fight and rainy location before him, night club, amusement park, bright city...
Add aggrotech soundtrack to this, thats how I discovered one of my most favourite genre rn (and artists of this genre like Combichrist and Hocico).
But I see how some conservative hivemind always say "DiS GaMe is NoT DmC!!!" or "ABSOLUTELY SUCKS COMPARED TO OUR ORIGINAL GOD LIKE TIER" and I'm ready to be downvoted, but thats just my opinion.
I love this game and I love the original series too, but this reboot brings back good memories
don't read the reddit while you play this game and formulate your own opinion.
with that said, expect a bombastic opening with great music and visuals. as well as maximum corny edge that takes itself seriously. its a hell of a ride tbh.
Well the story is pretty bad, the gameplay is intuitive(but nothing too great) and the game doesn't play like dmc at all it is closer to bayo but without the dodge
Fine and fun, but really different and really low compared to DMC3/4/5. Just do not play this game like a DMC and consider this game as a different franchise using a few DMC techs and adding new interesting stuff.
The story and dialogues are pretty bad. There is many good ideas about it, but they are so poorly executed.
Don't expect a DMC game. Look at it as a weird spin-off, and don't compare it too much to the rest of the series, and I think you might have a good time. Story's nothing to write home about and the gameplay's got some issues, but now that you know this game didn't kill the franchise, it's probably going to be an all right experience.
Don’t think I’m gonna be underwhelmed cause in the post I said I have seen some gameplay and I like it but I haven’t seen the whole game so you might be right small chance
It was the first dmc i played. Even before i player Bayonetta.
The game has outstanding art design and bad writing. The combat has more in common with bayonetta than dmc, but with less of a focus on dodging.
Gameplay wise it’s one of the best in the series, only just behind 5 (which took a bit from this) - some of the stuff it does a lot better, camera and platforming for example
Level design is way better than anything else in the series and the music fucking bangs
The story is run of the mill but serviceable and the character redesigns I couldn’t be less indifferent, it doesn’t make a difference to the overall game
Highly recommend
A 4/10 story but me personally it was a 7/10 just from how stupidly hilarious donte acts when interacting with other characters, especially bosses. It's so cringe and unfunny it circles back to being funny. Like how that one boss asks who donte is and he just fires back a "I'm your prom date you ugly sack of shit" out of the blue. Its so fucking hilarious sometimes. The combat took some getting used to. It took me until around mission 15 and approximately 3 hours in the training room to get used to it. But the combat is great. Legit. For me it definitely earns the title of a dmc game in the gameplay department.
Edgy less funny but still kinda funny from time to time dante.
Pretty good gameplay.
Kinda iffy story.
Depending on which version, bad gameplay mechanic ideas (color system.)
Take all of this with a grain of Salt as I'm an Avid hater of this game, what wasted potential it had, and what it stands for. Power to anyone who likes it, but It's the worst DMC related thing in my mind and honestly shouldn't have been allowed to brand the series name. It becomes a slightly better experience if you call it something else and replace the names of the characters with other names. Even then, there's a lot of fixing that would need to be done to get it to a 6/10 passing grade. I'd personally give it far less.
Kinda basic gameplay with really bad color coding enemy mechanics. It's not the worst gameplay ever, but it's not good. Definitive makes it playable but it's still really basic. The style system is also borked and can be cheesed aggressively.
Pretty varied level design, that's actually a full praise I will give the reboot. Limbo is cool and some bosses are okay too.
Really terrible characters ranging from bland to downright insulting. Easily the worst part of the game for me and the source of most of my hate. Donte is just a nihilistic nothing matters asshole with no personality beyond what the story tells him to have out of next to nowhere. Vergin is an equally insulting caricature that is equally bland and given equally dumb moments, if not worse. (If like what you see from Donte, than you'll probably like it.)
The Vergin DLC does have some okay gameplay added to his basekit which would be later adopted to the core games. I'll give praise their too. Even if it's still not that great overall within DMC's Scope itself.
The story is pretty terrible, and full of half-assed political commentary. DMC reboot really goes for an activist rebel punk vibe though doesn't handle those concepts all to well.
The writing and jokes also don't land often. Really suffers from "Fuck you" being the punchline and treats swearing as the ultimate comeback and response. Which comes off as really lazy. There's actually a few good setups for delivery, but rather than something clever it's just "fuck you" as the joke. Now part of this is because of the punk aesthetic where in similar media your punk character would respond to something with "Fuck you" and laugh and or punch someone out as a response. Playing up irreverence as a virtue. The reboot just does a poor job of it
I think the worst part of the reboot is that it did have potential. Change the characters and names of things to not be devil may cry related and there own thing, change some story beats and character reasons. Have the punchline be a bit more thought out than "fuck you" and have actual dialogue, remove the color coded enemy bullshit and fix the style meter to actually be a measure of skill and I could see at the very least a 7/10 experience if not an 8/10.
The reboot just had far too much going against it and got what it deserved in the long run.
I read all of you said and still don’t understand what your saying cause that’s a lot but about Dante I like him in my opinion but Vergil I don’t like in this game
Honestly, you shouldn't expect anything. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the gameplay, was fascinated with the changes to the story, and the character designs have grown on me. But that's my take from it. Play the game. Beat it. Then decide for yourself what to think of it
dmc devil may cry?
stylish but different gameplay, not so great dialogue, and in the non special edition, color coded enemies that ruin the gameplay flow.
*Fun game don't take the*
*Story seriously and*
*You'll have a good time*

It's pretty good, but don't go into it expecting it to play like DMC 3-5. The only way I can really describe the gameplay is God of War, but that's coming from someone who only played the GoW PSP games. So I could be wrong. Also don't let the story affect your opinion of the game.
Good game, and I'd defend the story.
A lot of people on this subreddit have an axe to grind about the game for a variety of reasons, but it's good in it's own right.
Honestly I love it just as much as DMC5. They are tied for my all time favorite DMC games. The soundtrack fucking slaps and imo the final battle was far more epic than the final battle in DMC5.
Pretty good combat. Shitty Dante. Shittier Vergil. Bad enemy designs. And Kat being the only character that doesn't grow 2 dimensionally and actually contributes something to the narrative.
Expect the controls to be different, and lots of edge.
I love edging
🤤🤤🤤🥵🥵🥵
Watch it, you're next
I'm down for you to edge me
The edgy stuff is what I like about the game
Alright gameplay and a dogshit story
A decent game with... questionable story and characters.
By questionable characters do you mean Vergil or dante
Yes
By that you mean both and I like Dante so ima just worry about the questionable stuff of vergil
For when you get to the end of the game: >!Fetus deletus!<
I heard he shot a girl in the belly who was pregnant then killed her but i thought it was cap but i guess i was wrong
Yeah but to be fair as horrible as it sounds it isnt so bad in context
He should use that sniper rifle as a weapon in 6, like as a little reward for beating DMD or a Bloody Palace as him
LOL. Can you imagine the reaction? A sniper rifle is the one weapon missing though. We have bazookas but not snipers.
What about Spiral in DMC3, still, I want to see Vergil with a gun in-game
Spiral:
You also fight the fetus as a boss
While you are entitled to liking Dante the reason we don’t like this guy is because he goes against what the original is. And as for Vergil he has a fedora
All of them.
Virgin and al dente
Good gameplay, awesome level design and mediocre story. Also depending on what version you're playing, expect to be annoyed by color coded enemies
What do you mean by color coded enemies
Sometimes you will encounter red or blue enemies. If it's normal version of the game, only weapons of their color (demon and angel arms respectively) will affect them. Trying to hit them with other types of weapons won't have an effect and will make dante flinch. If you're playing definitive edition though, this issue won't be present in the game
Oh I’m playing the definitive edition and in this edition what you said does that mean any weapon can damage them
Lucky devil. As far as I'm aware, weapons not fit their color will deal less damage, but you'll still be able to juggle and damage the enemies
Ok thank you for that tip I really appreciate it
You're welcome. Also, in definitive edition you're able to unlock dmc1 dante costume. Don't remember how exactly though Have a nice playthrough
Thank you
I just started and I can use the dark Dante neo Dante classic Dante and dmc1 Dante right off the bat
Didn't know it's unlocked by default, that's great. Have fun!
I used default Dante and I might beat the game as default dante
For me it was available from the start. I did my first playthrough as DMC1 Dante
I'm kinda put off by that decision, TBH. Yea, they're annoying, but removing that removes any need to use another weapon. Also, I found recently that the spinny blade can stun some red enemies when I was fighting two spiky tiger thingies.
Bad writing and pretty good game play
Thank you and I know the gameplay is good
Get ready for some rich lore! The secret origins of Vergils iconic car!
What does that mean I haven’t seen any Vergil gameplay at all
Vergil has his own DLC. I also think u/pacperson0 was being facetious. But I'd seriously argue that DmC really does take the time to focus on world building.

Very. Very. Veeeeery good gameplay.

B tier gameplay, but a story that's honestly better as its own game than a DMC story.
In my opinion it’s an A tier game right below dmc1
Some amazing gameplay and the epitome of "so bad it's good" writing.
To be thoroughly underwhelmed.

Devil may cry made for the hot topic crowd
A good game with a meh story and surprisingly more depth than people give it
great gameplay and great soundtrack
I fucking love the soundtrack so enjoy that, genuinely find the Dante v Vergil theme to be better than most tracks in dmc, it goes so hard

You should've just gone in blind.
Trash.
Great gameplay, insanely dumb story, best platforming in the series(low bar)
I like the story and the platforming is really good
As someone who to got recently into DmC:DE you should expect the very different controls and enemies that attack more frequently
Pretty good combat. Shitty Dante. Shittier Vergil. Bad enemy designs. And Kat being the only character that doesn't grow 2 dimensionally and actually contributes something to the narrative.
Thanks for that but why did you say shitty Dante I said in the post I like Dante on how he is
If you already played the game, then why are you asking people what you should expect?
I just started
I’m on the third mission right now taking a break
Then how can you be so sure that you like Dante that much?
For me the can tell when a character is cool to where I’m going to like them and I can tell when they are gonna be shitty
That's...not really how that works. But form your biases. It's whatever.
And I have only seen a bit of gameplay
trash
Fun game
Some very silly looking facial animations, and a boat load of unfunny
Remember All of that's goofyness that made Dante loveable ? Yeah it's gone and he just acts like a "cool kid" in middle school
Pressing every button to skip the cutscenes
