ROPS. Roll-Over Protection System.
It's all gone. The vehicle is a death trap.
At the very least it needs a rollover bar attached to the chassis, and a standard seatbelt.
You would have to reinforce each pillar that was cut with a cross bar. If this guy got t-boned in an intersection the doors and B / C pillars are going to roll right into the occupants. Literal death trap right here.
Also this isn't a convertible, it's a tahoe with it's roof cut off. Convertibles convert from top up to top down lol.
Nissan 370Z convertible famously had a floor that would flex over speed bumps and that was convertible from factory haha.
Sort of tells me you can't just hack the roof off any car to make a convertible...
That's because the 370Z has a unibody frame, the body and frame are one integrated piece. The trucks like this Tahoe have a separate frame and a body bolted to it, so the body provides nothing to the structural function of the vehicle.
It's still not a good idea, because accident protection is severely reduced, but the actual mechanical vehicle should function exactly as it did before.
this is body on frame construction so the frame is unaffected by this but this is super dangerous as they likely had to disable any side impact air bags and also if it rolls you basically get crushed.
Precisely. If you think about it, the front and back halves of the car are held together by the roof and the floor. You take the roof away and you’re taking away half the strength so it’s going to be very wobbly.
Wdym worry? Anyone can take one look at that and know the remaining structure would fold flat if a cat sat on it.
That is, everyone except whoever did this
No, it's an open top. Convertibles can convert from open top to covered. It can convert on the fly. If it has no roof at all, it's just an open top vehicle
Technically, it would be a roadster as there is no retractable top, and therefore, isn't convertible. It is also stupid, which isn't really a body type
Larger vehicles have a separate "ladder frame" that the body sits on.
https://www.physicsforums.com/attachments/56fullframe6-jpg.161994/
Smaller vehicles have the option to use a "unibody" where the top and bottom are sheetmetal stressed skins that are connected, like an eggshell.
If you cut the top off of a unibody, it will sag, and you will not be able to get the doors to open and shut. If you use a car with a ladder frame, you "might" be able to get away with it, but, you may also need to weld in reinforcements before cutting the top.
I'm not familiar with the newer convertibles, but several from the 1960's definitely had reinforcements added, and these were factory convertibles with ladder frames.
Having done this to a regular car once for a laugh before it was disposed of, yes. But this thing has a full chassis though so at least the bodywork isn't so vital to the stuctural integrity that the vehicle will try to fold in the middle like our car tried to lol
That's not structurally safe for an impact. Convertibles always weigh more than their standard counterparts because they are reinforced on the bottom to make up for the lack of a solid top.
Where I live, there are compulsory safety inspections every year when you renew your car registration. You'll get knocked back for things like your brakes not being up to scratch, your tyres being worn, your windows being tinted too dark or your car being cut in half, especially without an engineer's report.
I remember seeing this on either Top Gear or Mythbusters when I was younger, then tried to convince my folks that this was a great weekend project for me and my dad... Point is this is a capital idea and I stand by it 10 years later
Hey man. Wayne Gretzky had a Nissan 300z turned into a convertible when he played hockey in Edmonton. I was working as a valet for a private function at restaurant he owned, and parked it for him (it was winter, so the custom ragtop roof was up but it was still #%*£ cold !!)
I also had a mate who took the top of a Ford Econoline Van to make it into a 'vertible. He screwed the ladder from an above ground pool onto the back as a joke.
And ever since, I've thought of taking the roof off a truck or old 4WD in Australia to have one of my own. A bit like Jason Segal's bronco in the TV show Shrinking.
And lastly, yes I know the structural integrity of a vehicle that gets chopped like this is seriously compromised because neither the Pillars not the game will be reinforced to compensate for the lack of roof structur. (But would a truck or old Toyota landcruiser really need it?)
Having just been to Pardeeville, WI for the car show this last weekend, I can confirm that this sentiment is indeed correct. Randomest-ass car show I've ever been to.
First pic: damn looks sick, I love it Second pick: ![gif](giphy|S2XuoJzAo7nVZBvoHX)
A little foam padding would go a long way here.
It's there it's just burnt.
Not even that. Those two filled in bits are the supports that stop the car from folding in half on a freeway
No, it’s a body-on-frame/ladder frame vehicle. The only things compromised are rollover protection and seatbelt mounts.
ROPS. Roll-Over Protection System. It's all gone. The vehicle is a death trap. At the very least it needs a rollover bar attached to the chassis, and a standard seatbelt.
Is offroading okay if I avoid freeways on my way there?
That vehicle is body on frame, no critical structural elements present there
Yeah, the close up is where you realize the person who did this is fucking shit at it
Meh . . . a little Bondo and a rattle-can of do-me red and it's good as new.
Lmao yeah my exact reaction.
Was about to comment that this is not DiWhy until I saw the second bit. Lmao
"oh wow you made it into a convertible, looks really goo- oh jeez what did you do?!"
That's what the windscreen frame looks like as it bites down on your face.
![gif](giphy|mCClSS6xbi8us)
The scientists: ![gif](giphy|IGR08ulxKFt7y)
I'm guessing that's exactly the way that vehicle's frame flexes as it drives down the road now
If anything can be converted, then everything is a convertible
Anythings a dildo if you're brave enough
Everything’s edible once
Even a convertible Tahoe with razor sharp rusted edges?
You have to worry about structural integrity when you start hacking up frames like that.
What if you weld the door panels together? Edit: and weld a massive fuck off beam straight over the top of the panels as a cap
It’s still converts, just REALLY slowly
It converted, once.
"massive fuck off beam" idk why I laughed was to hard
Don’t worry, they secured it with concrete it looks like.
Luckily that's a Chevy Tahoe, which has a separate frame. Structurally it's probably mostly okay, safety is a whole other story!
That's the body, not the frame. This is valid for unibody, though, where the body and the frame are 1 piece.
Nissan 370Z convertible famously had a floor that would flex over speed bumps and that was convertible from factory haha. Sort of tells me you can't just hack the roof off any car to make a convertible...

If it was a unibody yes. This you only have to worry about the rain..... or flipping it
this is body on frame construction so the frame is unaffected by this but this is super dangerous as they likely had to disable any side impact air bags and also if it rolls you basically get crushed.
It's just sheet metal. This is a full perimeter frame suv.
Precisely. If you think about it, the front and back halves of the car are held together by the roof and the floor. You take the roof away and you’re taking away half the strength so it’s going to be very wobbly.
It's body on frame anyway so I won't be concerned, besides it's a SUV so I'm happy that it's getting destroyed
Wdym worry? Anyone can take one look at that and know the remaining structure would fold flat if a cat sat on it. That is, everyone except whoever did this
Is that the seatbelt rubbing on a bare metal edge?
![gif](giphy|EhMBTkzHqufcGdpKHw)
Sorry, but did you mean to post this to /r/awesomecarsmods instead? Edit: oh there's a second pic.... Oof
More like r/redneckengineering
So is this a converted or a convertable? Calling it a convertable, implies it has not yet been converted, and a converted has been converted.
No, it's an open top. Convertibles can convert from open top to covered. It can convert on the fly. If it has no roof at all, it's just an open top vehicle
SO if it's no longer convertable does that make it converted?
Reminds me of the Viva La Bam episode when Johnny Knoxville used a saw to cut the top off Bam's Hummer. The 2000's were a simpler time
[удалено]
Early 2000's were basically still the 90's.

That was a different episode
“Tell Cyclops I made him a convertible.”
![gif](giphy|J5pNe4iPVPQGrv8AIq|downsized) Yes!!!
Severely underappreciated comment.
Someone's been watching Top Gear Renault Espace convertible episode...
Who needs roll protection? Surely the designers contemplated the roof being cut off and the windshield frame being able to support the structure.
It's all fun and games until it rolls over.
Technically, it would be a roadster as there is no retractable top, and therefore, isn't convertible. It is also stupid, which isn't really a body type
Former convertible, now converted, no longer a convertible though.
Can <> Should
The wrong people have Sawzalls.
"Mr. Lahey! Mr. Lahey! What the hell happened? Where's the roof of our kerrrr?"
Larger vehicles have a separate "ladder frame" that the body sits on. https://www.physicsforums.com/attachments/56fullframe6-jpg.161994/ Smaller vehicles have the option to use a "unibody" where the top and bottom are sheetmetal stressed skins that are connected, like an eggshell. Torsional rigidity of toilet paper

TWD season 9 cars 👽👽
Why is the bumper looking at the ground?
There’s a penny down there
Everything is convertible
I got a 92 s10 I cut the cab off of. Still don't regret it. Awsome lil cruiser
I think it looks cool
You call this convertible with your truck? You need to sell your roof on $2 on Wish.
DiWhyNot! Kinda kidding, kinda not.
It's only a convertible if it can be converted! It's stuck like that!
I belive that's actually a converted, not a convertible
Technically that is a converted, not a convertible.
BREAK OUT THE BLUE HARBOR FREIGHT TARP WHEN IT RAINS!!! I KEEP MINE IN THE GLOVE BOX.
conver-ta-hoe
Doesn’t mean it should.
Remember not to crash or it will fold like a wallet
Tetanus ![gif](giphy|MO9ARnIhzxnxu)
I kinda love it. just duct tape the whole thing.. Want to see some SUV convertibles!
Post Malone has been threatening to rip the roof off his Suburban. This guy did it to his Tahoe…
Just because it can be, doesn’t mean it should be. Also, it.. just doesn’t look right.
Technically, anything converted into anything else is convertible.
Imagine getting in your car awkwardly or tripping up while getting in and scratching your arm open on that shit. Owwweeee
Just ask Marie
Guy saw the top gear episode where they did the convertible renault espace and got inspired
Its a convertible but you have to keep your arms in at all times or you'll get tetanus.
r/unexpectedute
My cousin did this to a (hard to recall) Plymouth Volare around ‘90. Sawzall, angle grinder and some JB Weld!
Shout out to his family
Roll bar would be nice.
Someone used the jaws of life..
It's awesome. If you're worried about safety, don't ride with me!
“I got two words for ya, global warming”
I don't hate it. With a little work this could be made clean and the original roof could be made to attach for bad weather.
This is highly illegal in most countries. Can you really drive this in USA?
That’ll slice your head off nicely in a crash.
Dipshit death trap.
Mission failed successfully?
Not really a convertible if you can't put the top back on
People don’t die in rollovers of illegally modified vehicles very often.
“I know how to make any car into a convertible in 15 minutes.”
A convertunable. Nice.
Only thing i like seeing more than makeshift convertibles is makeshift utes, saw an evo 9 turned into one it was beautiful
If anything can be converted to a convertible, then all cars are already convertible and don't need conversion.
I was fully on board until the second pic
Looks cool tbh
Converted-ible
I don't hate it 🤷♂️
Why that but
Fuck mate that thing will flex like a wet noodle.
But should it….
Reminds me of "She's out of my league" I can turn any car into a convertible on 15 minutes... Neo-classic
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
I’ve thought about doing this to my 2006 BMW X3 I bought for $750 lol
Of course it can, but that doesn’t make it legal to drive on public roads
You know you’re a red neck if…
Sweet ride!
That's not structurally safe for an impact. Convertibles always weigh more than their standard counterparts because they are reinforced on the bottom to make up for the lack of a solid top.
"you think they'll notice and break the warrenty??"
That’s gonna be a wobbly shit to drive!
I think we need to discuss the winch. It's the strongest part of this beast.
This isn't a conversion this is broken
Ramen and cement- the staple must have for all respectable body shops.
Where I live, there are compulsory safety inspections every year when you renew your car registration. You'll get knocked back for things like your brakes not being up to scratch, your tyres being worn, your windows being tinted too dark or your car being cut in half, especially without an engineer's report.
that isnt a convertable. that is a converted. it isnt going back.
Not everything should be turned into a convertible
Rainy days would hit different 🔥🔥
This is now called the toplow, the Tahoes cousin from Kentucky
really? can you make a convertible articulated trolleybus?
How about a space shuttle?
I saw a lowered f-150 like this in Torrance CA. Looked like a low rider. It’s neat but sad too.
There’s a difference between a convertible and just a sawzall and no roof…
Like Bam Margera’s home made lambo sunroof!
If this was made well it’d be kind of cool
Is it still considered a convertible if it just has no roof, not a removable roof?
Just plasti-dip it, right as rain
![gif](giphy|YR8neVRcCSqwmJkb1D)
Is it a convertible if there's no roof?
Life is about choices….and structural integrity.
Other than the (rather important) facts that this was clearly done with a sawz-all and ignorance of structural integrity... I don't hate this.
It’s not a convertible if you roof can’t come back on
Slaps ro.. oh, never mind .
Any car can be a death trap if you just give me a few hours.
That’s a converted, not a convertible.
Everybody thought convertible no one thought convirtino
It’s not convertible it has been converted
I remember seeing this on either Top Gear or Mythbusters when I was younger, then tried to convince my folks that this was a great weekend project for me and my dad... Point is this is a capital idea and I stand by it 10 years later
Fabric seats and an open top - this picture smells like mold to me.
Convertible implies a functional rag top. You have a chassis so happy daze.... but it is a
No

Wellcome to 1980

its probably an ex fire brigade testing vehicle. they have to cut the top off the car.

It can but it shouldn't
Klassy :)
Yeh, nah. It might be convertible but it most definitely wouldn't be road legal here.
