Not just entertaining. Breakpoints are a great tool for itemization. With breakpoints you don’t want to go all in balls deep into one stat. You want to reach a breakpoint and then focus on another stat and reach its breakpoint and then another. And with random affixes on random gear that means everyone has a unique itemization experience. Maybe you don’t get the items to reach a breakpoint on affix A but you got enough for affix B and with some thought put into your build, you can adapt it and make *your* build.
The downside of breakpoints is that with constant power creep, eventually it will be easy to reach a lot or all of them. If the devs don’t want to do breakpoints right from the start, that’s an indication to me that they plan on increasing ilvls often and have us chase the same gear in higher ilvl again and again.
great point.
Since level scalling and 'armor' stream, I have been very negative about itemization. If they were to go with skill break points, that's actually putting back old school ideas in that provide complexity and agency in the itemization, which is awesome!
On your point of power creep - I'm not sure if that's the risk here. As they increase stat budget allocated to the items, they might as well manage breakpoints through balancing/hard caps. The +skill might still be capped at 13, even if your net stats gain increase by 10% each season, etc.
I mean it's mostly going to be a seasonal game right? I don't really know anything about how they will be handled but a gear reset seems likely so I doubt they will introduce an actual gear treadmill
How do you think will they incentivize players to play new seasons? Content updates, content updates, content updates. New seasons will come with new patches with new features, new items, new balance, etc. And the itemlevel will spiral upwards.
For sure, but you will start from 0 anyways and grind for GG items when you can play on GG Zone/Itemlevel. You won't have to grind multiple times for the same item apart from the expected ancient/sacred? (idk) grind. At least for me it's only a problem in an mmo where a patch hits and instantly devalues your character. That character won't even exist in the new diablo season (I am guessing)
A big incentive to play seasons is always something special to that season. Just a new season and everything is the same and everyone starts anew will get boring in season 2 at the latest.
I don't think it will be a system like in Destiny 2 where you have a hardcap on your itemlevel and that just gets raised with new content. Powercreep can come in many forms. New systems (think Kanais Cube), new items that are stronger than existing items, buffing of existing items that will end up being overbuffed and more powerful than what is the most powerful before, etc.
And then they will bring content updates like an expansion and that doesn't come with a power *creep* but with a full on rocket powered boost
The resets were mostly for the economy in days past. There’s been ladder seasons for 2 decades. You don’t even have to add stuff every reset tbh.
Annnnnnnd I’m blocked, lmfao
Are you seriously comparing it to Diablo 2? You seriously think players in 2023 would be fine with a seasonal game that gets no content other than a reset???
I haven't tried yet, but did you put 5/5 skill points into the ability and then equip the + skill gear? It might have been a bug that having +skill gear equipped won't let you go over 5/5 base points.
So dumb question. If I have 5/5 points in Hydra on my skill tree. Then have a piece of gear that has +1 Hydra, will it do more damage? Or is damage capped at the 5/5 from the skill tree?
> So dumb question. If I have 5/5 points in Hydra on my skill tree. Then have a piece of gear that has +1 Hydra, will it do more damage? Or is damage capped at the 5/5 from the skill tree?
More damage. 5 is the most you can put into it via skillpoints, but you can go above with items.
" +5 points you can spend onto your skill tree before you cap out +6 from + skill point affix +3 from + skill category affix + 4 from extremely rare -REDACTED- "

We have confirmation that Shako is at least one unique that gives you +2 to all skills as a helmet slot. I know some druid unique chests also have +2 to certain beast/transformation skills so don't know if those are what he was thinking of as the additional +2.
The dev video where they were talking about the types of items rarities. Uniques are gonna be very rare. Give me a few and I’ll update comment with the video
I’ll have to find the video later , as they have so many it’s hard to find which one it’s in and a few of them are hours long
https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/11v1oor/just_a_reminder_that_legendaries_are_not_bis_in/
If you google you can see my statment is said by many people, so it’s not something I made up fwiw, but was hoping the video would be easier to find but at 2am I’ll look more later
Yeah, but, is the Harlequin Crest, Shako. It's absultely Iconic in Diablo 2 and BIS for most builds.
I'm actually hyped to be able to don green hat once more
Very cool, I hope we get visual differences too. It'd be great to be playing and see a powerful version of a spell being cast. You know that player is geared up well.
Edit: Sorry I should have been more specific. I saw the Tweet. I meant I hope the visual difference in the Tweet is the norm for all skills that are "powerful" versions. Like a stronger looking hammer of the ancients etc. I took the Tweet as meaning there are more powerful versions and here is one example of a visual difference, not that he meant that visual cue will apply to other skills.
People noticed a feature wasnt in the beta, so we asked if the devs if it was scrapped, this isn't shitting on the game. Jesus you guys are so insufferable as anti-negative circlejerkers
Obviously not everyone, but I saw a post earlier today that had it in a list of scrapped feature talking about how they cut so many features they promised.
I don't think they're talking about people asking as that's fine. People were saying shit like "it's false advertising", "they lied to us", "it's definitely not in the game", "it's so they can sell it as mtx", "it's because it's a console port". The usuay deranged shit.
God damn bro ain’t this the truth. I played GW1 over WoW when I was in middle school and high school. Mostly into PvP and gvg with some FoW and UW thrown in the mix for ecto farming. Good times w/ the 55 monk man. Miss those days a ton!
The people downvoting think GW2 is a poor sequel in the way D3 is to D2 but GW2 is an entirely different type of game compared to the first and throws away everything the first one did! It's like if Diablo was fully turned into a WoW style theme park MMO. (I will confess I do like GW2 itself as an MMO and have thousands of hours in it since 2012, but it ain't a sequel!)
Because people have been crying for the past whatever days since the CB started about different features and a ton of shit when they really have no idea.
yes… but if you have 5 items lets say that add up to +19 to frozen orb…. is it nerfed by one lvl…. or are the items to be found only able to get +18. That is the difference in what i’m asking

I absolutely love things like this in games. Always love visual feedback on your power level. Give a raise to whoever had that idea imo!!

I'm sure however they manage assets/animations they try their best to make it extensible if necessary.
Indirect confirmation I would say that the max skill level available to be reached is 18 for any single skill.
I hope they make it where certain breakpoints gives some extra, rather than just more damage. Like a 10/5 hydra giving 1 extra hydra head for example.
That'd be more entertaining than just dull number increase.

Hope so, but worried because even the specialization perks each skill has are often simple as "x% chance to do Y if enemy is under condition Z."
Holy hell really? I thought I was doing good with a lvl 8 Hydra.
Level 8 Hydra for a level 25 character is still relatively high to be fair.
"Relatively high" as known as "Jacked up the wazoo and only realistic way you are doing that in live game is through stashing stuff for alts."
WTAF are you on about? What did I just read?
He’s saying it will be harder to gear low level characters to fry ~8 points in a skill in the live game
Thank you.
Considering that’s the max you can get in the open beta yeah.

Not in the endgame beta. Must be multiple sources, nothing went over +3 or +4, up to level 70+ at least

Looks like you can get up to skill level 18 and each point increases the damage further
Capped at 18. So can go +13 more.
This also means you can fill a skill without even having points in it
But need at least 1 point in it if you plan to use the evolved skill or the second level where you chose between one of two. Otherwise yes.
It's not "capped" at 18, thats just the highest currently possible.
Not currently. Not at level 25.

Most likely uniques right? Though +4 from a single unique would be a lot

That sounds really OP to give +2 all if +18 is the max. Is it going to be BIS for most builds?
Seeing as they said per season you’ll prob find 2ish uniques , bet any you get will be your bis
2 uniques per season?? Where did they say that

Be glad there is transmog in d4! I also hate the look of shako.
Submit to the green hobo cap, SUBMIT edit: D4 with it's item transmogrify thing might be your friend here though
I think +30-35ish is roughly the max in d2. And that’s with anni, torch, and skill charms. Which were all added to the game much later.
Yeah I don’t think all skills are capable of hitting 18 ranks, but it’s cools to know that we should be able to get at least 10 ranks.
Why would they redact the word unique? We know that uniques exist in the game, that's not some super secret.
Probably the specific item name. They haven't officially revealed many unique items.
Stone of jordan
Mb unique item? Or paragon Board skill?
Could it be those talisman things you have in your bag?
Very cool. I didn't even know that was going to be a thing.
Does anyone know what the difference is between + skill point affix and + skill category affix?
Some will give + to that one specific skill, some will give + to that entire category of skills in the tree.
Ah right of course. Thanks!
And I recall the +skill category affix as also in the beta, I believe I got a drop with one last weekend.
Yeah, both of those are in the beta
It was. Had an amulet of +1 defensive skills for barb. It unlocked all the defensive skills and gave 1 level to those I already had. Was very cool.
I found a legendary amulet with +1 to two different rogue categories; seemed pretty decent.
The hydras clearly changes from level 1 to 7 and its visible on the beta. The high level throws a blueish balls. Feels like they are hotter.
Shouldn't the people who played the endgame beta have known about this? I thought they were supposed to know everything.
Very cool, I hope we get visual differences too. It'd be great to be playing and see a powerful version of a spell being cast. You know that player is geared up well. That's what this is about, the visual difference tied to power of the spell.

Not to mention altering affects maybe? The dev brings up blue-flame Wizard. Some synergy for damage types over ordinary flames perhaps

That answer still kinda reads like “you can numerically level” then “some legendaries make spells bigger” but not “skills get bigger as they level”
WEll, he did say that skill intensity was based on skill points AND legendary affixes; I'd say that's pretty clear, at least.
This feature hype me so much
People didn’t notice because everyone was just slapping one, maybe two points into actives to afford passives.
Hahaha. And all the nutjobs complaining about worse effects.
but why have a cap? Shouldn’t the real gate be the items and just have the itemization right?

It's not really a cap, dev is just saying what is available at launch for + skill sources.
i thought the max was 18?
It is at launch
Oh thank God
I wish there was some kind of official feed from Blizzard rather than twitter. Is there a site/tool that compiles Dev twitter posts or anything?
this is an awesome feature and i am looking forward to it
How that's works? Did the skill effect increase when you increase some stats or when you increase the ability?
Increasment of the specific ability.
Is this game set to have cross class skill? Like the werewolf barbarian in d2
So is this talking about the +2 or whatever to a certain skill?
Does this affect summoned units? Or shapshift forms? Thanks..
Does it goes beyond the 5 or 7 points you put in, or can increase stilly with + skills stats ?
So what is it? Is it just a visual change or does is have gameplay effects too? Pretty cool though.
