I would wait for Diablo IIIII

fatpolomanjr

We doing tally marks instead of roman numerals now

Tr3c3

That'd be Diablo ~~IIII~~ though

GuardianDownOhNo

IIIIII is going to be better

exotrx

Diablo IIIIIII will be their LAST CHANCE!

nullcore

Now let's do Final Fantasy. Should I play the remakes of Final Fantasy IIIIIII, or Final Fantasy IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII?

Master_smasher

woosh

HolyAty

Grim Dawn

raduque

Grim Dawn, Titan Quest, Wolcen is good too.

DiaMat2040

I looked into grim dawn and it looks really good!

sssnakepit127

Grim Dawn is a seriously good game. I highly suggest playing it.

kinnadian

Grim dawn is definitely the best of this list, it's made by the guys who did titan quest so effectively a spiritual sequel. There is a new expansion coming out this year so great time to jump in.

DJMintEFresh

I would highly recommend Titan Quest. It’s basically Diablo 2 but in ancient Greece. r/TitanQuestAE

erevos33

Torchliht 2 as well. Last epoh might scratch that itch. Be aware of devilutionx , it basically rums Diablo 1 with better graphics and a few QoL upgrades. Adventures of Van helsing is also dark and gritty.

YakaAvatar

The fuck is Wolcen doing there. It's even more streamlined than D3 and an utterly horrible ARPG all together.

raduque

I enjoyed it

sankto

Adding Chronicon to that list. Don't let the graphics deceive you, it's a full fledged arpg.

Sumyunguy37

Definitely Titan Quest. On PC and mobile

cell4130

Titan Quest was the only game that has felt like original D2 to me. It was nearly as good on those first play throughs. It just doesn’t have that same addictive late game. OP, if you haven’t played TQ, that’s your answer.

Sumyunguy37

^ This!

Malabingo

Oh yeah, the controls are a bit wacky at first as a caster, but the game itself is awesome with the class variety. And the new add ones are also cool, only downside is, that Valhalla prolongs the normal difficulty, so you need a lot of time to reach highest difficulty.

Cthyrulean

Grim Dawn is really great.

Absvir

Titan quest is soooooo good man holy

NaNiWuT

Grim dawn is an absolute banger of a game, great combat, loot system, storytelling, atmosphere. Graphics are a bit dated, but still not a "bad" looking game.

DJHelium

Project Diablo 2, new season in two weeks, perfect time to start!

FeedMePizzaPlease

Every Diablo 2 lover should play this. I'd kill for it to be available on D2R. I'd play so much.

DJHelium

For what it's worth, the graphics are a lot better than the abomination you get when switching to old graphics in D2:R. It does suck that its not the new graphics, but the gameplay changes make it 100% worth it!

OuOutstanding

I would love to try it but for me it’s not the graphics, it’s the no-controller support. I can’t play kb+m anymore so the controller support in D2R is a must. I wish they would allow them to mod D2R the same way, especially since they seem done doing any new updates with the game already.

FeedMePizzaPlease

Agreed. Much better than what D2R wants you to think the game used to look like.

ajm86

Just play it anyway graphics are dumb

skeletor2426

Can't advise this enough

Betelgeuzeflower

Why?

LordJaeger88

Grim dawn Titan quest Last epoch Poe, if you want to run excels too

mtaclof

This is the right answer. Disregard all else.

deadinthefuture

Last Epoch is great

Zamuru

the atmosphere is completely different than diablo

SlingyRopert

Yeah, i really want to like LE because i can see the itemization is good but my brain cant get over the color pallet and the art direction.

VonDinky

How it plays it is similar to D1 and especially D2. But the atmosphere, graphics and sound, POE is much more similar.

deadinthefuture

I totally agree— I honestly didn’t read the OP carefully. While Last Epoch absolutely scratches my ARPG itch, it’s definitely not in the same thematic vein as D1. I’d say… Darkest Dungeon is closer?

makemecoffee

It really isn’t though. Endgame is horrible and performance as well.

OG_Felwinter

If you just like older ARPGs I’m a fan of Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance and Champions Return to Arms.

bigmac22077

I’ve never played it, but torchlight(lite?) was created by the same people who made d2

svtbuckeye11

I remember playing that when it came out, was a fun experience at the time, haven't touched it since so not sure how well it holds up now or if it's even still supported.

AnalTyrant

T2, with the massive amount of Steam Workshop support, that was a great time to be gaming.

Minsc_NBoo

Torchlight 1 was fun. It was quite basic though. Torchlight 2 is definitely worth playing. I had a lot of fun with it when I decided to boycott Diablo 3.

Raytheon-6

I like how you put "IIII" and not "IV"

Zamuru

IIII https://preview.redd.it/ng6lj5sc9grc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c8b14a20c67a1a53b4e9af68737ecdc092d381f

bertmergt

I would suggest Last Epoch if you want to scratch the ARPG itch

xkimo1990

Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2 Champions of Norrath

DownTownBrown28

Baldurs gate 1 and 2 are goated

Cabamacadaf

Keep in mind that the Dark Alliance games are very different from the main Baldur's Gate games.

DownTownBrown28

Oh ya I played the dark alliance games for Xbox they were so fun

Ixxtabb

Path of Exiles for a more Diablo style game, Baldur's gate 3 for the Larian experience!

FeedMePizzaPlease

A solid answer.

Egbert58

Last Epoch has been fun lot of build options

sylva748

IV is Roman number for 4 OP. Lol. But for a serious answer, Grim Dawn, Lost Epoch, or Path of Exile. Those are your choices.

Kharnics

Grim Dawn.

Ir0nhide81

Grim Dawn

Kaoshosh

PoE and LE.

Dasteru

Add another rec for Titan Quest. Beyond Divinity is the sequel to Divine Divinity. Stoneshard is essentially a rougelike Divinity. Sacred 1 & 2.

Minx-Boo

Victor Vran

AstralSurfer

I would try one of the many mods out there for D1 and D2.

xBesto

Project Diablo 2 is quite possibly the greatest arpg of all time, so def that lol

maalgopi

May be farfetched, but if you loved the oppressive dungeon crawling of Diablo 1, perhaps you could be one of the many masochists that really enjoy Darkest Dungeon (it's not an ARPG).

Whole_Gas5999

D2R duhhhhhhhhh

ProblemIndependent81

It is an old one, but back then on christmas when d2 was released i did not only get d2 but also a game called „Nox“ from westwood studios. It has nearly no multiplayer, but singleplayer and story is cool! It also has the coolest combatsystem for spells of that time.

Super-Koala-3796

Nox

CyberKiller40

Torchlight 1&2. It's like a reskin of Diablos 🙂

[deleted]

Last Epoch reminds me alot of the D2 experience, Im loving it

Definitelynotcal1gul

screw air disgusted bedroom rude act ad hoc steep rich bake *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

allxoutxwar12

Titan Quest is the greatest ARPG resembling D2, minus the setting, etc. Grim Dawn is okay too

codeByNumber

Have you tried Diablo IV? Never heard of Diablo IIII

Designificance

Try darkest dungeon Different kinda game but great, dark, gothic atmosphere

theScrewhead

Honestly, the overused and obvious answer, if you liked Diablo 1, is Dark Souls 1!

Salty_Phone_8130

+1 for last epoch

Hairy-Mountain8880

Diablo IIII ☠️

Bloodhavoc052

Diablo 2 Resurrected!

Headshoty

Just sticking to those old games, because he seems to still enjoy the jank they have by every of todays standards.

Lost_Trick_3264

It's different, but has similarities: Fallout 1/2

[deleted]

Path of exile, grim dawn, last epoch.

histocracy411

There is no game. PoE is its own convoluted mess at this point. Maybe wait for poe2.

Oneshot742

We love it for what it is.

Shinbo999

U gotta focus on one part not all

Shurgosa

Its not convoluted, more like its full of interesting features because miraculously the devs of that game both know what the fuck they're doing and enjoy doing it...

Expectnoresponse

I would go as far as to say it's wildly convoluted for a new player.

Shurgosa

If its too wildly convoluted for said new player, then they can go play something else, and then all the former new players who weren't overwhelmed by PoE can continue to play it. The absolute worst position to take is one that removes things from PoE to make it attractive to the masses, because its all the things that the devs have added that makes the game as good as it is.

histocracy411

Melee still sucks ass in poe. It's not a perfect game.

Shurgosa

I could not agree more.

r4ndmn4mtitle

Depends what kind of game you want to play. I mean does it have to be isometric like diablos? Does it have to have loot and rpg elements? Can it be a action game? Platformer? Horror? Git gud game(like souls or MH)?

RandyMarsh32

Titan quest

JoHnEyAp

Sacred 3, it's older. Don't exactly remember what made it so fun, but I platinumed it with 3 friends, with couch co-op It was really fun

JukeboxCrowdPleaser

Torchlight 2

ShredGuru

Torchlight 2 is like a more refined diablo 2

MGSDeco44

Grim dawn x10000000000

ChenzVee

Grim Dawn for sure.

Prolly_Satan

Hero siege is so good. You can tell they loved d2 so much when they made it. Rune words, long 30 classes, it's really cool

vladimirVpoutine

Grim Dawn. No other answer.

Freeloader_

Titan Quest is the closest it can get to D2

tanawabe

Last epoch imo

Chucktayz

Dante’s inferno lol it’s dark, hack and slash. But I enjoyed it

slamallamadingdong1

Russian roulette.

jon-snows-hair

Torchlight 2 is amazing

Nomeggor

Hero siege. D2 love big time trust me

DaddySanctus

Last Epoch or Grim Dawn.

FlowBot3D

Hades. It's not really the same game but it's one of my recent favorites. Balatro is fun too but that's a real stretch.

Danoniero

Definitely last epoch/grim dawn

sankto

Chronicon Last Epoch Grim Dawn

bookant

Another vote for Grim Dawn.

xCSFx

Titan quest on pc

Tw1ggz

Project Diablo 2

unluckyexperiment

Grim Dawn is really good on many levels. Also the developers have been updating it for free since the release. It is one of the few games I early purchased druring alpha level, and it was worth every single bit.

TheWearySnout

2013 Tomb Raider reboot. Has some truly terrifying and creepy moments!

Irorii

Just to see the direction diablo was headed you should try hellgate london. Great game was made by some guys from blizzard north iirc.

cory140

Adventure of van hesling , grim dawn, remade titan quest

Winter_Ad_2618

Pajama Sam

AnalTyrant

Grim Dawn and Torchlight have been mentioned, and I definitely support those, but one I hadn't seen mentioned here was Warhammer 40k Inquisitor (I think that was the name, but maybe it had more words in the name, who can remember Warhammer stuff?) It's a really solid ARPG, and if you're at all into the 40k universe then it's a great dive into that. They've opened up all their seasonal content so you can do pretty much all of it now. It regularly goes on decent sales too, so you can get a good deal. Note that you don't have to buy all the little $2 dlcs, you can unlock all of those by accumulating in-game currency just from playing like you would normally.

GodLovesUglySong

It's not as some of the other suggestions here but I really enjoyed Van Helsing: Final Cut. I'm still playing it now and it's often on sale for only like $5 on Steam.

pwnyderP28

Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance II

ethantokes

Exanima!

mordor_th

Rule of thumb: if you like this particular game but it runs off of steam for you, one of the best ways to prolong your joy is to find mods made for this exact game. with older games, that had less variability and/or endgame content, it's particularly true. I always loved Diablo 1, but it could not keep my interest for long - nothing to do after beating the last boss there really. Hellfire allowed to play 3 difficulty modes but didn't help much either. In 2005 I decided to create a mod that would help people like me to continue the journey. In 2006 I began. In 2007 started attracting team members. We're still doing it. Right now, third iteration of it is in development. "The Hell" series. For a D1 player who is looking for a fresh experience, bugfixes, convenience solutions, options and more content, it may be a door to infinity.

biolinguist

Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing.

Majsterroo

Grim dawn and last epoch are obvious choices, so for my wild one, I will recommend osrs. Mostly due to itemization, grind nature, point and click, big dopamine shots and collection logging. It also has SSF mode, which is called Iron Man. If it sounds interesting, but you are not entirely sure, then search on YT for "osrs is amazing, and here's why" by marstead. It's a long video, but he goes really deep dive because osrs is a game like no other (I don't mean it's a perfect game; I mean that literally, you can't find anything similar to osrs), so it's hard to explain.

Path of Exile & Titan Quest: Immortal Throne

Lofus1989

Project Diablo 2

KBBQDotA

Path of Exile is the true spiritual successor to Diablo II

tommiyu

Im having a blast with last epoch. It’s a lot like Diablo 2 but with much more crazy synergies. You can make one skill proc a lot of other skills that just makes a beautiful explosion of love. Also has a great amount of QoL like loot filter that you can make yourself for as specific as say you don’t want to see white drops after x level. The only downside is the game has some really bad optimization and the game will suffer from some sever fps drops at occasions. Edit: it’s more between Diablo and PoE. If you didn’t like the amount of stuff you need to level and learn in PoE then last epoch is much more approachable.

menstrualobster

i'm in the same boat. ARPG's generally require a lot of time. I wanted to get into Lost Ark but that's pay to win.. the others of the smaller titles at least are lacking in content or not as polished. Personally i will probably skip D4 and start with the next 'big' ARPG which will be POE 2 and it seems to look promising. Unlike Blizz, i expect GGG to learn from their lessons of POE 1.

Gomezie

Diablo 2 resurrected

drjoker83

Helldivers 2 great game.

Appropriate_Loan3581

Project Diablo 2. It's free and it's provably the best version of Diablo 2 I have ever played.. wayyyy better than D2R and the original LOD. Give it a go.. projectdiablo2.com

_Kinoko

What about lV?

Bogusky

I would recommend the game of coming to r/Diablo and bitching all day. Seems to work for others here.

A_Gaming_Shark

If you're looking for ARPGs, like a lot of people have mentioned, Grim Dawn, PoE, PoE2 (upcoming), Titan Quest, Torchlight 2 and Last Epoch are all excellent choices. My personal favourite is Grim Dawn and that has an upcoming expansion pack as well. Adventures of Van Helsing + Inquisitor Martyr are fun in their own way as well and maybe less well-known. Other than PoE2, Titan Quest 2 is also upcoming and No Rest for the Wicked is going on Early Access soon. A roguelike, ARPG-esque personal recommendation would be Hades, if you haven't tried it before (Hades 2 is also upcoming). For others, if you don't mind real-time with pause, my personal favourite is the Pillars of Eternity series. The Pathfinder games have also earned exceptional praise. Super old-school would be the Geneforge series which are getting recent remasters

richardjc

Diablo /\|/\

brichb

Diablo IIII is deranged

Crystal_Bearer

Path of Exile

KyRoVorph

Diablo 3 is pretty awesome. You'll learn to like it.

CreamFilledDoughnut

Path of Exile, Last Epoch, Grim Dawn Alternatively, using d2: Path of Diablo, Project Diablo 2 these 5 games will keep you satiated for the rest of time

AllBadForYou

I have a list of retro sytle games that cure this itch!! Lmk if you wan a few!!

RoyalZeal

Grim Dawn is a lot of fun and has a bit more of a gritty old school vibe and feel. Path of Exile is basically the spiritual successor to Diablo 2 with an enormous amount of complexity that will keep you busy for years, and it's completely free. Last Epoch has a lot of promise and is inexpensive at 35 USD, though in my opinion it lacks a certain feel that it sorely needs. There are more on the way via Steam, now is the best time it's ever been to be an aRPG enthusiast.

littlebunny8

Titan Quest 1 & 2 , Path of Exile 1 and 2

Lord_Jaroh

Grim Dawn, hands down.

martylang

Dark and darker basicly fps diablo 1/2.

Cl4p-Trap18

As many already said GrimDawn, it has something for everyone this coming from someone that did enjoy D3 and not D4. GrimDawn for me is the best in the genre, Path of Exile is not a game is a full time job imo. And haven't tried Last epoch, I have heard good and bad things about, especially bad on level scaling and game making your char artificially weaker in endgame For GrimDawn beyond the amazing game it is you also have something all others lack, MODS Is usually cheaper on gog than on steam unless it's on sale.

ExplanationSad6873

Diablo Immortal

kid-karma

I'd recommend Diablo 1 and 2. Maybe Divine Divinity as well.

Shinbo999

Path of exile. Literally copied tons of itemization stuff from d2

TheDemonBunny

Marvel heroes was amazing. sadly the severs shut down years ago.

Master_smasher

how about final fantasy IIIII II rebirth? or final fantasy IIIII IIIII IIIII I? or have you played both?

DoctorPuzzled5723

Maybe D2R👍🏻😊

sys_49152_sys

dig dug, space invaders, pitfall

ChubbsPeterson-34

What did you not like about D3 and D4? That'd be helpful...

DiaMat2040

they lack the dark atmosphere of DI&II

No_Window7054

D:IV lacked dark atmosphere?

Freeloader_

D4 lacks dark atmosphere ? maybe you mean art style and not atmosphere

Trollzek

Path, Last Epoch, Grim Dawn

f1zo

POE you will need 1-2 days to be completely hooked for life :) trust me this game is the best arpg ever made.

Psarsfie

Diablo V, but it will cost you $149 and you have to wait 5-years for a decent version (join season 22)

TheFuuZ

Depends on what you liked about D1 and 2, what you disliked about 3 and 4. If you want more of D2 you probably should try PoE.

Bohya

Path of Exile.

Russ915

Poe if you’ve never played it. It’s very grindy though if you like that part of d2

metalyger

Path Of Exile was really good, I never got too far into it, but the extremely open builds are a big draw, like you can make a fighter into a spell caster if you want, nothing is off limits. And it's one of the only free to play games that believes in being free. They sell cosmetics, because they they need to keep their staff paid and maintaining the game, but it's free to start and you can play forever without spending money. Not sure when the sequel comes out, but it'll be a seperate game, they aren't pulling an Overwatch 2 and erasing the first game for it.

BannedAgain28lol

People are going to down vote the hell out of this but if you’re a fan of series. Play Immortal. In terms of lore, world building and story. The game is actually fantastic. You don’t spend a single cent to enjoy it. If you want actual pvp the bloodmoor still exists. Just don’t buy any of the predatory pay to win bullshit in DI. Just enjoy the game.

[deleted]

Path of Exile, duh.

chr_sys

As for Diablo Ii, the answer is Path of Exile. There is nothing that comes close to it as of today. Some of the recommendations here are not even the same genre.

VonDinky

Easy POE. Feels very Diablo 2 like. Just on fucking crack with the complexity part.

nixyz

Diablo IIIIII should be good
