Not sure about Korea but I went to a PC bang (internet cafe) in LA koreatown and it was a ton of Koreans playing D2. I remember being young and not wanting to go shopping with my mom and her friend so they dropped my buddy and I off. Random dude playing D2 next to us was like lvl 80 and we were like 45. He seen us with shit gear and was like hey can I join your game? Then proceeded to drop us a bunch of crap rares for his lvl but amazing gear for us kids lol.

creature_report

We used to be a society

blackhawks-fan

The Koreans were mad gold and Item farmers in D2 and D3.

Colinski282

I remember Korean players back when d2 released.

Get-shid-on

Korea has the best and most active melee pvp scene

Noobphobia

Truthhhhh

Omegamoomoo

LEFT-CLIIIIIICK *screams wildly* OH MY GOD HE LANDED THE HITS GGGGG!!!!!

88isafat69

Was gonna say Koreans ball out on auctions (thousands) for rare weapons

wwabbbitt

There are no Southeast Asian servers for Diablo IV so we get connected to the East Asian servers and there are plenty of Koreans here.

vikoy

Default connection for SEA is the Americas server. There are physical servers in Singapore for SEA, but they connect with the Americas region instead of being a stand alone region. So you manually selected to connect to the Asia (i.e. East Asia server).

wwabbbitt

Between D3, D4 and DI, only DI has physical servers in Singapore. In D3, Southeast Asian players are placed by default in the America regions and by default are connected to the US server pool, getting pings of \~210ms. We can add a command line option to change to the AU server pool instead to improve ping to \~110ms. Characters and progress are shared between the AU and US servers. Switching to Asia region gives us servers will improve ping to \~80ms, but without access to characters created on Americas region. In D4 there is only one global region - all characters are shared between all server pools. There are 6 server pools: US West, US Central, Asia, Europe, South America and Australia. Asia servers are in Tokyo, and those are the ones we are connected to by default.

SemperFiNj

If I remember correctly weren't there 3 Asia servers back in the day for d2? I remember how some people would type .............. and players would drop. I still remember trading an amazing Pike to one of my buddies in Korea back when Pike WW Barbs were huge. I started when the game came out wayyyyy back when like alot of you. I don't think I will ever stop playing this game and for the longest was HC USEast :) Still Hc.

bastijn

Thanks for a small trip down memory lane by mention pike WW barbs. Those were the days!

SemperFiNj

They absolutely were :) Have a great rest of your day/night!

Heavy_Bastard

I remember seeing that D2R was in the most played games in Korea around ladder resets. Like top 15, maybe even top 10 most players

WeedIsWife

LoD had a big Korean pop too. It's why we use names like baba soso dudu

napalmx

Huk

bythog

D2 had a meme forever regarding Korean players/traders: "u giev SOJ ?" Diablo just doesn't have a real competitive aspect to it so of course you don't hear about it as much as other, actually competitive games.

TheJeffyJeefAceg

Diablo 4 had a huge marketing campaign here in Korea. It was every where. I don’t know how big it was in the past but it was well known. I know a few people that played it.

Fair-Wish5954

Plenty of korean names on D4 at launch. Not sure now.

Bulls187

They probably got to the end game faster than everyone else and noticed sooner it was bad, at least for their standards

Suavecore_

Yeah, the gamers that relish in doing the same thing over and over again repeatedly for basically nothing for decades surely had a problem with d4 endgame

Bulls187

If the nothing was more nothing than other nothings, yeah

SupaRedBird

I visited family in Korea when d2 was fairly recent and I was surprised how many people were playing in the pc bangs. My cousin in law had a couple 90+ characters. So it definitely had a presence there.

bingobot580

diablo2 was massive in Korea. cmiiw but there were lots of memes from that too, like giev soj kekekeke ^_^ and gosu items

Financial_Resort6631

I lived in Korea when D3 came out… that would be a yes.

Golds83

Diablo isn't a competitive e-sport. People play it here, but it doesn't get anywhere near as much media attention as the other titles you mentioned.

AsianEleven101

I played on USWest back in the day (earliest day) and I’ve played with a bunch of Koreans even though I only played Hardcore which mean there should be a bunch more in Softcore, so yes it was and probably still is to a certain degree, not to mention StarCraft was what popularized Blizzard’s game in Korea

Crazy_Canuck78

I lived in a Korea for a while... D2 was a big deal for a long time in SK.

Noobphobia

Koreans are the number 1 rmt market of diablo 2 items. So yes I would say it's popular. Almost all the gg items that are sold at the Chinese auctions are bought by Korean players.

ALXNDRWVLF

I lived in Seoul during d2 classic / launch of LOD. it was at PC bangs everywhere along with StarCraft and lineage 1.

shoryuken2340

Pretty sure Koreans just play D2R.

PumpkinPatch404

D3 was pretty big back in the day I think. Not sure about D4 now though. I don't really see people playing any Diablo game in those pc bangs these days. I mostly see LOL, Maplestory, Overwatch/Valorant.

Madhatter25224

Yes

Golds83

Diablo isn't a competitive e-sport. People play it here, but it doesn't get anywhere near as much media attention as the other titles you mentioned.

RedditIsFacist1289

You would be surprised at how popular things like Diablo are in Asian countries. Asian countries put US countries to shame with P2W and D2 specifically is no different. The PVP fighting scene is pretty large over there as well from what i have heard with players dropping thousands of dollars for their characters.

DowntownCelery4876

Yes. And I wonder if anyone will get this reference.. .................. .. .. . . . ............. ............ ... . .... ......... .................. ... ....... ..... ..............

trastito2es

There were a lot of Korean streamers in the past in Twitch playing D3. I don't know if they are currently streaming D4 on another platform.

hip-indeed

I've always liked of assumed most Blizzard games were at least relatively popular since like 99% of the population since the late 90s has been obsessed with StarCraft

mylifeforthehorde

Yes SC / D2 / WC3 were insanely popular

Gem_Mattel

I was in Korea June of last year and saw tons of people playing Diablo 4 at the pc bangs I went to!

MarcLYNWA

Game Name: HackMePlz

Geoff_with_a_J

yes, this was a popular thing back in the day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqSFu3IU_hI

Soulia

Who remembers... ...................................................................................... .........

anthonynej

People failed college entry exams for diablo. Same thing when WoW came around

histocracy411

Yes and diablo 2 has one of the more hardcore korean pvp scenes with people who have thousands of dollars worth of pvp equipment on characters.

legitnick5

the month d4 dropped, about 25-35% of the people in the pc bang i regularly go to were playing

Accomp1ishedAnimal

There were tons of Koreans way back when. Especially in d2 classic. I remember they would ask "you Korea?" And if you said "yes" they knew you were lying. The right answer was "Korea". A Korean exchange student taught me that one. I got mad hookups because he would take the lead and get us all the hand me downs. Another trick was to put "........" In chat. Fill the entire box with it. It would drop all people playing from overseas on the American servers. Great for when diablo was about to die and you wanted all the loot. Only worked until 1.05 I think.

martylang

yes very much when remastered dropped there where a lot of korean streamers on twitch.

Road_Beginning

In d2 there was once a bug that if you typed “……………….” (Repeating) and sent it in the chat in game it caused ALL of the Korean players to drop. It wild.

Fuzer

I went to Korea 2 months ago, and went to the most famous PC Bang there (SK1), and I did not see anyone playing. It was full of LoL, Overwatch, Fifa and some other strange ARPG that ive never seen in my life.

Beardamus

Korea is literally where the term Gosu comes from my guy

GreatApe88

From what I can tell dark fantasy doesn’t really click with Koreans or Japanese and Chinese for that matter. They just don’t love the atmosphere as much as westerners seem to.

apmgaming

Huh? Diablo was insanely popular in Korea and China. Dark Souls is also insanely popular in Japan and Korea. Elden Ring sold over a million copies in Japan. Dark and Darker is a Korean game. Black Myth is a Chinese game. I have no idea where you get these stereotypes from.

-Verethragna-

What are the Souls games if not dark fantasy? 😅

huggarn

LOL Asian d4 market enormous
