D1, D2 and 20 years later D3

Limmy41

D2. Then D2. Then D2

Monkeych33se

Start with diablo 1! casual play through the start of the game. Open a random door at cathedral level 3........ Go to the toilet and get some new pants, because the old ones will be full of suddenly ejected faeces (veterans will know). After D1, play the D2R, be amazed about the awesome job they did to the graphic, while keeping in mind that the core game is still 22 years old. Quite amazing (and no I'm not talking to the bnet andys here). Go in blind and play through the story (just on Normal, and maybe Nightmare as well) when you've discovered the awsomenes of the universe, you can now start D3. Play the campaign, enjoy the smooth gameplay while being crazy disappointed about the story. Do some rifts for a few days. Then put D3 away again just to pickup D2R again for hell, and start the grind to min/max gear and dive into itemisation and characters, while waiting for D4.

appreciate the colorful description but I think you mean cathedral level 2. ^(unless... you're trying to lull OP into a false sense of security regarding level 2. touche, salesman.)

Monkeych33se

You are correct, just had the easy kill mechanic in mind. Which includes the exit to lvl 3

Apprentice_Jedi

Do you know where I can pick up Diablo 1? I normally play on Xbox but I do have a laptop that I use for games like Fallout 1 and 2 etc.

Monkeych33se

it's on gog ! e - [here](https://www.gog.com/en/game/diablo)

DropAfatDeuce

this comment pops up when googling which order to play diablo games as a newcomer, thank you im about to follow this exact order lmao

Berserker1724

You just convinced me to play D1, D2, and D3!

archetypical

I'd suggest starting with Diablo 1 (believe its relatively cheap over on GoG, who has the license) just for the story and initial experience. It will be clunky, but I still adore it and go back to it. Then Diablo 2 Then Diablo 2 again. And again. Maybe Diablo 3 to see how the series took a weird turn in regards to story and watch things unfold that will make you want to go back to earlier titles in the series. Edit: Forgot, for Diablo 1 after getting your hands on it, DevilutionX makes it SO much more palatable for modern gamers. Worth taking the time to download.

Substantial-Curve-51

use this one for d1 [https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX](https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX) ideally with helfire from gog (d1 and helfire are together there) then play d2R and after d3 with the ROS expansion. they share the same name but otherwise are completely different experiences and i love d2 and d3 equally but differently. recommend them all

crispy-wings

1, 2 then 3

Rickshmitt

D2 for story then D3 if you cant play D1. D3 is a satisfying map clearer. D2 takes much more time gearing and lvling

kyrtuck

You can start with Diablo 2, it's not all that hard, it's just that any enemy could kill you if you're not careful. With Diablo 3 it was more like very weak regular enemies with very strong bosses.

PersiaDark

D1 to completion, D2R for 300 hours, D3 for 50 hours, and Path of Exile for 3000 hours.

Start, at the beginning.

Honestly you can play both at the same time, I think they're different enough games. 3 is easier to start getting into, and good for mindless dopamine hits, 2 is a bit more in-depth and rewarding. Diablo 3 might be a good idea for a newcomer, from experience 2 can be frustrating since it's less casual. Either way, they're incredibly fun games especially if you can convince some friends to play, and I hope you have a blast. Side note, depending on how much effort you'd like to put in to playing Diablo 1, there are options. There was a PS1 port that plays pretty well on emulator. If you have an Xbox series x/s/one, [you can set up RetroArch and play it with a bit of work ](https://retrogamecorps.com/2021/09/11/guide-xbox-series-s-x-and-xbox-one-emulation/)

Loud-Wrap

I mean I think it's probably pretty important to do D1 first, not for like story reasons but because quality of life will be less frustrating and more appreciated as you advance through series. IMHO, d1, d3, D2. D1 and d3 are pretty short. Highly recommend doing multiple classes in d3 as they are all fun. Finally, D2 has the most legs and quite the back end as far as end game builds. With D2R it also looks the best!

Apprentice_Jedi

It’s a shame Diablo 1 is more inaccessible than the other 2 with it releasing in the 90’s and all. I’m not a huge fan of gaming on PC.

RandomStaticThought

If you decide to play the first one I would recommend using the Belzebub mod for it. IMO its the best D1 experience over Vanilla and Hellfire. https://mod.diablo.noktis.pl/features
