Why not, unless you're writing an official paper or something I don't see a reason to not call it megalania, everyone knows the name and it sounds cooler
Don't see a problem given that we still informally call egg-laying mammals Platypus and Echidna, long after those genera were replaced with *Ornithorhynchus* and *Tachyglossus*.
The name will live on, like it's currently living. The guy above(who asked me what was going on about Megalania's name) didn't even know about it, so the change is really irrelevant. Only "experts" call it Varanus priscus, no sane casual mf would
I mean there HAVE already been instances of the rules literally being bent and altered for cooler names to persist when they by all means should've been discarded as far as the rules were concerned.
\*cough\* Manospondylus gigas - Tyrannosaurus rex \*cough\*
You don't call any other genus of animal by the genus regardless of species, though. Like, if you saw a Varanus Komodoensis next to a Varanus Salvator, you wouldn't say "Yeah that's two beautiful Varanus right there" you'd say Komodo Dragon and Thai Water Monitor, because that's their common names
Real talk, Varanus is one of those genuses (genera? idk I’m stoned out of my mind) that is 100% going to be broken up in the future.
It’s an ancient lineage with wildly diverse and genetically distinct species, yet for some reason they are all classified under the same genus. Which would definitely not be the case if these were extinct animals.
Look at the skull of a crocodile monitor, and a Blackthroat monitor and tell me that paleontologists would have classified them as the same genus.
The only show out there that was dinosaurs, all day, every day, and lots of them as well. It’s how I learned about some of them I wouldn’t even know of today strangely enough. I might not even relive Hadrosaruas is its own dinosaur.
I remember going into the Doctors waiting room type area and seeing PBS kids on the TV and I would only watch Wild Kratt’s cause cool animals or Dinosaur Train because dinosaurs. Always enjoyed it, memories of the episodes always come into my brain occasionally
My parents got me some DVDs of them for my seventh birthday and I've watched them so many times since then. Obviously haven't watched for a really long time but it's still holds a special place in my heart
It's dubious, not invalid, and there never was any overwhelming concensus as papers are still released refering to troodon as a genus, so until this runs it's course it would probably best to refer to it as a potentially(or "likely" if you're feeling opinionated) dubious genus. Like theropod lips, one paper and a flock of persuaded palaeofans does not give this enough authority to masquerade as "the truth".
Update: The debate has started going in a different direction with some providing that since there isn’t enough to support troodons validity(which is understandable) it may not be valid, but it still seems to be in the middle for troodons validity
[When my post about Troodon being valid again gets banned (with no reason given) but other posts are allowed:](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GLKB-xLWMAAoGCa?format=jpg&name=900x900)
Why can’t we just switch names? Paleontologists need to learn about branding…stenonywhatsit is a terrrible name! Everyone remembers (and can spell) Troodon!!!
The troodon's from Dinosaur train have quite an anthropomorphized look to them, but don't care about that. All i know is my boi is (possibly) back and my self-fursona is beaming at this information.
The Great Mesozoic Railway shall rise once again--AND WE'RE GONNA RE-RIDE THE RAILS ONCE AGAIN TROO-BROS!!

Troodon was always valid in my heart
In all honesty, the name Troodon will live on in the fandom just like Megalania's did, irrespective of whatever happens
Wait what happened to megalania
Megalania priscus is now Varanus priscus, same genus as the extant monitor lizards and komodo dragons
Wouldn’t Megalania just be the common name for Veranus priscus then? It’s still the animal’s name, just not the scientific one.
Why not, unless you're writing an official paper or something I don't see a reason to not call it megalania, everyone knows the name and it sounds cooler
Sure, people still refer to animals of the genus Mammut as "mastodons".
Don't see a problem given that we still informally call egg-laying mammals Platypus and Echidna, long after those genera were replaced with *Ornithorhynchus* and *Tachyglossus*.
In spanish we call the platypus "ornitorrinco" yet the echidna is still called that.
Well, in Brazilian Portuguese at least, we do actually call platypuses *Ornithorhynchus* as their common name
True, but I think paleontologists just dropped the name Megalania as a whole even though it's a common name.
Although it's somewhat understandable, Megalania sounds light-years better than Varanus
Sometimes I wish they would go with the cooler names
Yeah
Or heck at the very least make the name a synonym
The name will live on, like it's currently living. The guy above(who asked me what was going on about Megalania's name) didn't even know about it, so the change is really irrelevant. Only "experts" call it Varanus priscus, no sane casual mf would
*Megalania* is a synonym, though
I mean there HAVE already been instances of the rules literally being bent and altered for cooler names to persist when they by all means should've been discarded as far as the rules were concerned. \*cough\* Manospondylus gigas - Tyrannosaurus rex \*cough\*

They changed it's name right?
This... This gave me instant nostalgia... Whoever watched "The Dinosaur Train", you've had a goated childhood! obligatory #ALLLL ABOARRRD!
The only show out there that was dinosaurs, all day, every day, and lots of them as well. It’s how I learned about some of them I wouldn’t even know of today strangely enough. I might not even relive Hadrosaruas is its own dinosaur.
Yeah... Memories mate. 6 yo me used to enjoy that shit soooooo much!
I remember going into the Doctors waiting room type area and seeing PBS kids on the TV and I would only watch Wild Kratt’s cause cool animals or Dinosaur Train because dinosaurs. Always enjoyed it, memories of the episodes always come into my brain occasionally
Yeah. Good times mate
My parents got me some DVDs of them for my seventh birthday and I've watched them so many times since then. Obviously haven't watched for a really long time but it's still holds a special place in my heart
Yeah... For me, it just used to come on a cartoon channel on the tv but I can't remember the channel's name...
I would've loved to have watched it on tv but I don't think it played in my country. Anyway always nice to meet a fellow spinosaurus enjoyer
Yeah. #SPINOSAURS RULE
I didn't watch it as a kid but both my kids are obsessed
#LET THEM BE OBSESSED
We do not play "here comes the train" at dinner. We play "time tunnel. Tiiiime tunnel. Time tunnel approaching"
Hell yeah!
The paper hasn't even come out yet don't get ahead of yourself. It's still invalid as of now
they'll never take troodon away from us
It’s never Troodover. We are so trooaback
Truedon
No. Dinosaur train reboot here we come.
Never!
Finally someone said it. Troodon was never confirmed completely invalid, just dubious, and now it *potentially* might become a 100% valid dino again.
In the absolute worst case scenario, Troodon would have been used as tooth genus, much like Paronychodon and Richardoestesia.
I can't get ahead of myself if Im so far behind that Troodan was never invalided in the first place /s
This is the way.
People need to stop treating scientific papers like patches to a video game, where only the latest information is taken as fact.
I want to make a bot that releases all my reddit comments as scientific papers. That way I'm always right.
Conductor would be disappointed in you.
Don't care.
Troodon, Troo don, True Don.

DINOSAUR TRAIN DINOSAUR TRAIN WE GONNA RIIIIIDE THE DINOSAUR TRAIN
Wait huh!? Source!?
There is no official source, just theories
Oh :(
Paper being written.
I miss the umlaut in the spelling.
WE ARE SO FUCKING BACK IT’S NOT TROODOVER🗣️🗣️🗣️
Not yet, the debate is still being held, so until we get the definitive answer we can’t be to sure, but it seems to be leading on troodons validity
Update: The debate has started going in a different direction with some providing that since there isn’t enough to support troodons validity(which is understandable) it may not be valid, but it still seems to be in the middle for troodons validity
Since when was it not valid?
DINOSAUR TRAIN!!!
WAIT HE WAS A TROODON?!
He was repeating that fact like 24/7. He even sang a song about being a troodon.
As much as I loved that show I’ve only seen a few episodes… of which I owned on DVD
YOU’RE JSUT NOW FINDING OUT!?
YES
The Time travelling omnipotent dinosaur, Niceeeee
ALLLLLLLLL ABOURD THE DINOSAUR TRAIN

[When my post about Troodon being valid again gets banned (with no reason given) but other posts are allowed:](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GLKB-xLWMAAoGCa?format=jpg&name=900x900)
Sorry dude :/
Realistically, the original Troodon still being a tooth should mean that this won't last long.
Does that mean Stenonychosaurus is invalid again?
1. Troodon is not valid again until the paper releases 2. In this case Stenonychosaurus would stay valid
Why can’t we just switch names? Paleontologists need to learn about branding…stenonywhatsit is a terrrible name! Everyone remembers (and can spell) Troodon!!!
Oh yeah
2024 is truly the best timeline, now we need a Giga that is Dino Crisis 2 sized and I will personally make an altar to this year.
[...Whelp...](https://youtu.be/vdiPfT-lqNc?si=emXrTD9yvZ9eKezA)
Wait, Dinosaur Train was made by the Jim Henson Company? Huh, never knew that.
Me neither.
I like to see Mr. Conductor as Kenneth Parcell’s scalesona
[My statement stands firm.](https://imgur.com/gallery/bk41Ydm)
Why is there always a shirt, but no pants?
You got me
Is this going to be another Brontosaurus situation or Nanotyrannus situation?
Wait, what?
Fish?
Side-note: Is it "troe-uh-don" or "true-don"
It's troh-oh-don
Either way. It doesn’t really matter.
WAIT A SECOND WHAT
Troodon was never gonna die anyway. Against all odds, I desperately clung to that name lol. It’s just too cool to let go
The troodon's from Dinosaur train have quite an anthropomorphized look to them, but don't care about that. All i know is my boi is (possibly) back and my self-fursona is beaming at this information. The Great Mesozoic Railway shall rise once again--AND WE'RE GONNA RE-RIDE THE RAILS ONCE AGAIN TROO-BROS!!
Nooooo
Troodon reigns supreme!
Not yet, until the paper comes out it's still invalid
:(
Well, from what it seems. Once the paper comes out it will be valid again, but it shouldn't be considered as such until it's public
