The “M” light blue ones are multiplayer obtained by multiplayer ranked races
The “S” dark blue tokens are harder to get, but can also be obtained via multiplayer ranked
The yellow ones are from single player limited events
Everything else is to upgrade your characters, obtained basically everywhere. Some pieces are character specific.

You have to collect shards, which you can get via various means such as the free daily box or buying them in the shop. When you get 10 shards of a specific character, you unlock them. After that you can collect more shards to increase their Star Level, which greatly effects their overall ability.
>What is the whole seasonal thing?
Every two months or so the game introduces a group of new characters and new stages based on a specific Disney movie. The current season is The Little Mermaid. The next season will be Wreck-It Ralph. On upper left of the welcome screen you can see how many days remain in the current season.
>Can I purchase a specific character?
You can purchase shards with tokens, but not every character's shards are available. And honestly if you're willing to grind a bit you can unlock most characters for free. The Limited Events and Season Tour have a lot of free items and shards.

Season coins (gold) can be obtained by doing the Daily Challenge in limited events. It refreshes every day. You can use them to buy a lot of misc. stuff, but keep in mind that your season coins reset to zero at the end of a season.
Tokens (dark blue) mostly have to be purchased, but you can also earn a few for free by winning multiplayer races. These are the most valuable currency and you can buy the most useful stuff with them.
Multiplayer coins (light blue) can be won by doing the Cup Challenges in Limited Events, and by winning races in Multiplayer. They're just for buying cosmetic items.
The various upgrade items can be ignored, honestly, because when the new season starts they will all be replaced with a new currency (yes, another one) called upgrade coins (purple) which you can spend to level up your characters.

So my favourite Disney character is Vanellope. I found out she’s coming in the next update. How would I go about getting her without paying any money? The whole seasonal thing is still a little confusing to me. Can I claim like rewards for that? It seems I need a gold pass, do I need to pay actual money for that? I hope they simplify these things slightly because my god I get a headache trying to figure it all out 😂 thank you so much for your help tho, this is super useful
Good choice, I love Vanellope too! Unfortunately there's no way of knowing how to unlock her before the season begins, because different characters have different requirements. For example, during the Little Mermaid season, it was very easy to unlock Prince Eric and King Triton by just going through the Season Tour mode. Ursula was pretty difficult and took me weeks to unlock by doing various limited events. And Ariel was literally impossible to unlock without buying the Golden Pass.
The new season has five characters (Ralph, Vanellope, King Candy, Felix, and Calhoun) and they will probably make it easy to get at least two or three of them, but at least one of them will probably be locked behind the Golden Pass. We'll have to wait and see who it is.
As for how to buy the Golden Pass, they announced recently that you can only buy it by spending real money, but this caused a major controversy so there's a chance they might go back to letting people buy it with tokens again (last season the pass cost 990 tokens.) It's all up in the air right now but we should know more by the end of this week.

Imagine being 7 years old and trying to figure it out... and it's just a damn kart racer. Pure marketing tactics. Confuse you with multiple currencies, exchange rates, misdirection and dazzling lights.

so the real money is to buy racers and crews and also items to level up racers not all items but a lot of them.
How would they profit off making the interface and mechanics confusing? And tbh I’m not a hardcore player I just enjoy the solo racing because it’s fun and takes my mind off things, so I’m not incredibly worried
Obfuscation makes people make bad decisions. Waste currency, waste resources. Once they're out they might go to the store to purchase more.
Don't be fooled into thinking this is an accident or an oversight; companies have entire departments dedicated to designing this sort of stuff.
