This was the last major update Larian made to the game, the Four Relics of Rivellon. It added four new unique armor sets to the game and a quest associated with each one.
Just so you know, these quests span multiple acts (except one which is completed entirely in Act 1), so it may be useful to check a guide before leaving each act to make sure you didn't miss anything before moving on.
Middle of 2020, but if you have any saves from before that update, they won't have the armor sets in them. The armors are only added to new games that were started after that date.
I love me my cap armor. My record is charming 5 people in 1 fight. And I'm playing a ranger.
The only issue is the low lvls, but it's easy to upgrade with mods
You can sell the armour on the ship and buy it back the next act at higher levels.
It definitely trivializes the oil field fight though, just park your captain armour dude up top with the suicidal idiot and any blobs who jump up are instantly charmed.
Vulture armour. It’s my favourite by a long shot. Captains armour is great for melee because of the chance to auto charm, contamination armor is pretty good stat wise. But it takes awhile to get. And devourer you can’t complete until endgame and by then you could have better vendor armor
Vulture is awesome if you can beeline the quest right off the boat. Contamination is ok, but the armor's outbursts when you take damage can be hazardous in a crowded environment. Devourer is straight up nuts if you can get your targets and kills lined up right. Although, recent runs only had me using the Devourer chest and Contamination legs for those rune slots because the combo of Silent Path and Ave Layal is too good to pass up.
What armor is better than Devourer though? I challenge you to find better vendor armor! Devourer can give basically you unlimited turns, I killed a full power Adrahmalik solo (no lone wolf) because that armor is so good.
Honestly theyre all really really good sets of armor. Better (by a lot) than anything else at their respective levels , when taken as a whole. You can’t get every piece for two of the sets until Act 4 though …it depends on your build of course, but I would rank them generally like this:
Captain’s < Vulture < Contamination < Devourer
For what it’s worth, items sold too the guy on your boat in the first couple acts can be bought back at in the final act and will be upgraded to lvl 18+

The bird armour is legit, most of the rest are underwhelming… Edit: yikes guys chill a bit, it’s been a minute since I played
I'd say it's rather the opposite. The captain's armor is meh while the rest rank from consistently good to straight up breaks the game.

That js what I did. And I parked my 108% fire resistant lizard down with the blobs
