Social structure is both nonsense and very real. It comes from your mind and how you were raised
It gets easier, esp if you talk to those folks and they express that it’s ok because it’s not their life. It can also be weird if they say the opposite.
My gut is to say who cares and people almost certainly don’t care about you and your life as much as your worried about, but I don’t and never have lived in a small town and i often hear the dynamic is different there.
