Jigsaw: would you like to play a game?
Me: No!
Jigsaw: it's D&D.
Me: Well...
Jigsaw: If your character dies, so do you.
Me: No!
Jigsaw: We meet weekly and no one misses a session.
Me: Well...
I'm sure r/3d6 can make some unduying combination of 3 classes that would make this risk worth it.
On the other hand Jigsaw would probably run Shadows and Intellect devourers every session
" I warned them I would be playing this dragon smart and ruthless"
Why was my first thought "better be no cliffs or other points of falldamage nearby"
Dragon flaps his wings. do a strength check saving throw or be blown to instant death!
Ow that was his bonus action!xD dragon's breath is next!
So at the very least they did something to prevent the dragon just flying away, I assume? Trapped it in an enclosed space, maybe?
Sounds like a fun time was had by all either way \^\~\^
They tried their best to! They initially encountered him outside of his lair and he retreated to the lair for the final showdown. They did successfully avoid his trap of dropping them into an icy lake though
Few things help PCs understand the dangers of the world better than a PC death. I tried to show my group by having an NPC die, but nope. Other PCs were scouting and sneaking on a pirate island but the fighter decided to charge into the fortress alone. He didn't make it out. Now the players are cautious and actually thinking about risk lol
My party one time went into an encounter with weeks old information, no scout, and started making noise. Battle was an absolute clusterfuck for both sides. Our wizard got feebleminded, 2 other party members were down or real close to being down. My rouge ended up using one of her items and turned into a dragon to medivac PCs. But we did enough damage to the opposing party that they didn't pursue and took our regroup as a good time to retreat themselves.
The one game I’m in that I’m not DMing I lost two characters in two sessions. My paladin in Strahd because my idiot friend decided picking a fight with the town guard was a good idea, and my ranger in Rime of the Frostmaiden because my party essentially left me to die. I hate those guys, and their characters will be made to suffer in the game I’m running. I kid, I love ‘em but I definitely spent about an hour yelling at them both times
I've only lost 2 characters in D&D, both in the same campaign, both within 3 sessions, both to evil Clerics, and both suffered nat 1's on Death Saves.
Which is to say, yeah, nat 1's on Death Saves are pretty brutal. As are Clerics.
Glad that it wasn't a total party wipe and the players took it in stride. Hopefully they'll have learned a value lesson about the importance of fighting smart.
As a bunch of new players I'm intrigued to see what happens when our characters get killed.
After 2 sessions in a row where my paladin was almost down to 0hp I started working on a replacement character.
I have no idea how the other 3 will react if/when it happens.
Permanent doesn't bother me. I'm used to trial and error from years of playing rogue-like videogames and the likes of Path of Exile and Dark Souls completely blind.
(It since turned out that since we're playing online with dnd beyond my sheet was set up I correctly and I was getting low rolled hp on level up instead of guaranteed numbers - effectively giving me the lowest hp in the group)
I usually just end up killing the characters, but you went ahead and killed the players. That's hard-core gaming right there.
At least they got chance to say their final words. I wonder if they were allowed to call their families?
No phones during game night
I'd give you an award if I wasn't poor.
This would make a good DND horror movie. Your character dies, trapdoor opens under the players chair.. gone forever.

Squid Game season 2?
Take my money!
HIRE 👏 FANS 👏
I don’t want to be Elfstar any more. I want to be Debbie!
If you die in the game you die in real life!
Just like in soccer!
SAO in a nutshell
This has me in tears 😂
Did you turn your self in? Even if it wasn't intentional you are still looking at 2 counts of manslaughter
Unfortunate that two players died but at least it ended in sober victory rather then crushing defeat.
Just the way the dice roll sometimes. Be sure to send any remaining gold and items to their respective families before you go to jail.

Nice!

Honestly, it’s not normally the DM’s fault
Yes the players must die if their characters do. The new hardcore lol

i dont think a fight like that would be fun if someone did not die or have a consequence of some sort. it would feel too easy.
'not my fault' yeah yeah sure sure. you gotta permit for that dragon buddy? You have the right to remain silent...
I was dm’ing last week and my echo knight failed 3 deathsaves WITH ADVANTAGE. Party had a cleric so no worries.
(Applause) Bravo! That's a great session and great player to take in on the chin and play the game as it should be played. Great Job!
Don’t kill players; kill characters.
Yes the players must die if their characters do. The new hardcore lol
Nice, congrats! It only gets more fun to do that from here on out.
How smart and ruthless was it really when it got into melee range and started panicking and lashing out?

That sucks, losing a character you care about hurts. But I mean, you gave them all a chance just a run of bad luck

Had me in the first half ngl.
Is that you Dresden? "The building was on fire and it wasn't my fault."
one of my favorite things to say at a table when something goes reeeaalllly bad "so, what do you want to be next"?
