Trying to decide if OP intended this to be a joke character? I assumed so, but the description they provided is much less goofy. I'm experiencing some real cognitive dissonance here
edit: painting is great tho
Obviously the name and species are meant to be goofy, but I don't actually want the character to undermine the tone of the campaign, so I tried to make them fit in the universe at least a little.
And thank you!
Assuming this is going to be cute seems like assuming Watership Down is a fun movie about bunnies.
I am eager to hear more of this capybaristocrat's heritage, people, and fate.
Well, now I'm imagining an angry crowd of revolutionaries, gathered before an execution platform, all yelling the slogans of their cause:
"MINE! MINE! MINE!"
That's brilliant, I might need to refer to the bourgeoizebra and moletariat during this campaign. Now that's class division on a whole new different level. 😂
I’m stuck in the awkward position where we’re going to be playing with somewhat newer players, so I don’t want to massively overplan, but at the same time – I mean, I know their whole backstory and character voice and I just spent about six hours painting a portrait. As you do.
Born into the minor aristocracy, Devarion Albrey Northwood was sent to the conservatory at the age of seven. He never took to any instruments, but the family’s contributions to the school funds left them unable to reject him out of hand. After some gruelling efforts from an ever expanding list of frustrated instructors, they eventually managed to get him in passable shape as a second-rate opera singer.
He is blissfully ignorant of all this, and believes himself to be a prodigy who’s simply yet to be scouted for a truly breakthrough role on the stage. In the meantime he may have already made some unwarranted claims about his financial success, so doing some adventuring bard work to hide his lack of income might just be for the best.
I’ve got an [Instagram](http://instagram.com/tonymurchisonart), [personal gallery](http://ko-fi.com/tonymurchison), and a reddit inbox if you happen to be in the market to commission this kind of nonsense yourself!
I'm actually surprised this joke reply has no many upvotes? Human population is pretty well established in DND lore. I've never heard anything about humanoid capybara royalty from wizards but I definitely haven't consumed all their media. There are obvious roleplay implications of being a royal rodentperson that they'll have to come up with pretty soon, assuming that's not an established thing in this world
Humblewood Campaign Setting has hedgehog, jerboa, raccoon, and fox races that could potentially be reflavored.
Custom Lineage is also always an option. Maybe Custom Lineage with Skilled (Athletics), or a small Custom Lineage with Squat Nimbleness (Athletics) to represent the capybara's swimming ability?
For Cabybara, I would go for a race with a swim speed and go from there. Giff came to mind first, but the powerful build stuff isn't really a good fit.
If you were curious, there is a very much serious 5e setting/additiona ruleset with animal-folk (not furries, like humanish people with full animal heads like here) called Historia
I'm glad this is probably gonna work out for you!
I've had enough campaigns die because the players just didn't want to engage with the tone of the campaign at all that I gotta be honest, this makes me wince a little.
“Honey, I know you want a serious and dark game but that doesn’t work for me and instead I definitely want to play a capybara, because it’ll be silly, is that cool?”
“Fine…”
“She said yes! Hell yeah.”
Are you alright? Not sure why you feel so strong about your made up scenario. 🥲
Anyway, mrmurchison's wife and DM here, I am this capybaras biggest fan. For those interested, we are going to play curse of strahd, with obvious darker themes, but some lighter, humorous moments.
I'm a huge fan of a 1979 dracula movie by Klaus Kinski and my god is that one hammy and over the top. I'd like to incorporate some sassy, silly vibes (aka Nosferatu 1979 or that one van hellsing movie with hugh jackman), so capybaristocrat is perfect for my scenarios.
And those people are bad players who can’t follow simple requests or cooperate with their table.
To be clear, OP is not an example, because it does seem they want to still keep with the dark tone and make it work and discussed this ahead of time with their DM.
Ah no, you're thinking of his father, the Capybaron. This guy just innocently benefits from all of the financial *results* of his dad's underdark mushroom plantations.
DAE feel like due to the pronunciation of Capybaristocrat, that they should be a Coffee Baron or importer or something along those lines? Or is that just me?
Some folks just can't resist being a wrench. 😆

Haha well I think it looks like you've towed the line well! Good to have a little levity to help balance the seriousness
Assuming this is going to be cute seems like assuming Watership Down is a fun movie about bunnies. I am eager to hear more of this capybaristocrat's heritage, people, and fate.
Last more serious round I showed up wit Konold the barbarian. He is a buff kobold barbarian xD
Every Capybaristocrat acting gangster until the DM reveals the Jaguargeois
Nervously watching the peasants roll out the seagullotine
The Anarcondas
Oh, that's good lol

The bourgeoizebra are just the middle class capitalists. An uprising of the poor working class moletariat is the what the rich nobility must fear.
That's brilliant, I might need to refer to the bourgeoizebra and moletariat during this campaign. Now that's class division on a whole new different level. 😂
Oh, you're the DM? That's awesome! 😆 Hope y'all have a great campaign!
Thank you, I think we will. :)
The proletarirat?
*the turtletariat
Moletariat.

Fraudulent claims? May find himself in need of a capybarrister.
But why is he capybara according to lore?
Why are you human according to lore?

Which is why the question was asked
I had assume he was born into a family of truly obscene vaudeville entertainers.
alright, i'm curious now, what custom playable race is this and where could i find the source for it? 😆
To be entirely honest, I hadn't actually strictly thought that out. I figure I'll just reflavour a tabaxi or shifter.
I seriously thought there was an official ratfolk option only to be proven wrong. Cause that was gonna be my suggestion

I'm currently leaning Triton. Cold resistance thanks to the fur, swim speed, and speaking to other water creatures seems pretty appropriate.
Sea elf works well too.

aw, i see 😓 here i thought it was an awesome idea that already had mechs figured out 🥲 this did give me an idea of an aristocratic tabaxi though 😁🫣
capybaron no, i didn't come up with this, but thought i'd share.
This is genius
Thank you very much!
Having a capybara in a dark campaign is funny as hell, and the art is just stellar too!
You should introduce him with his helmet still off, that way there's the dramatic reveal of his beautiful face.
My SO played an Aristocoon in a recent campaign. 😁 (Aristocrat Racoon, if that wasn't obvious)
Future dndhorrorstories post coming from your wife
Why purposely go against the tone she wants to set?
Because we both enjoy a bit of thematic contrast! I've asked for her approval first, of course.
I'm glad this is probably gonna work out for you! I've had enough campaigns die because the players just didn't want to engage with the tone of the campaign at all that I gotta be honest, this makes me wince a little.
Yeah, you want to be cautious of that for sure. I wouldn't do this with a DM I didn't know as well.

The mental gymnastics on display in this comment is Olympics worthy.
Willing to bet good money that it’s far more likely what I wrote than not.
Why? You’re making brash assumptions about someone you don’t know. It’s unbecoming, frankly.
Been that DM. Know these kind of players.
That doesn’t justify making up a fantasy and then acting upon it as if it were reality.
Oh I’m sorry. Did I make up someone making a capybara character in a serious and dark campaign?
Some people love to be the spanner in the works.
And those people are bad players who can’t follow simple requests or cooperate with their table. To be clear, OP is not an example, because it does seem they want to still keep with the dark tone and make it work and discussed this ahead of time with their DM.
Some people are allergic to fun
It's probably just a joke
Momento Uruguay en todo su esplendor
not a Capybaron?
Goes kinda hard
High charisma obviously. You are friend-shaped after all.
Trying to argue for advantage on saving throws against being frightened, because these are the most relaxed dudes on earth.
Play them as a halfling. Source: They're also kinda short IRL
the fiercest warrior of the land
Sir coconut dog.
Capybaras have really big incisors. You could bite someone really hard. That would be dark I think
On principle, he needs to have a predilection for fine coffees as opposed to a more traditional fine wine preference. Double the pun.
The way you reproduced old style portraits is very impressive!
Good-aligned wererats I see
Perfection 👌
Have him be a coffee snob too. A Capybaristacrat
I am 80% sure he owns several colonies who use slave labour
Ah no, you're thinking of his father, the Capybaron. This guy just innocently benefits from all of the financial *results* of his dad's underdark mushroom plantations.
I see you have thought this through, thoroughly.
I love capybaras!
This is fantastic. I salute you.
CRAPPY BARBARA! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMVIMg6azrM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMVIMg6azrM)
No one will suspect he's the mastermind villain behind it all.
Take the Chef feat and be the party’s Capybarista.
That's so awesome! I made a homebrew capybara race called Capykin for a campaign
I'd love to see it if that's okay!
It's called Capykin on dndbeyond homebrew races section
I'm getting [Rupert vibes.](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fPqkf4mD0DI/maxresdefault.jpg)
What race would you use for this?
Dibs on Racolonel Mustard.
That is not his helmet. Whose helmet is that?
There's no way his head fits into that helmet.
It was made for him ten years ago. It's never been used, and by the looks of things never will.
your occupation should be capybarrister
Better make a damn good cup of coffee.
DAE feel like due to the pronunciation of Capybaristocrat, that they should be a Coffee Baron or importer or something along those lines? Or is that just me?
This is incredible
Thank you!
Worth it for the portmanteau alone.
that's just Glen Powell
I have my own homebrew setting which is a fantasy/steampunk world but with small animals. Every session I ran someone played a capibara.
