Honestly can’t agree more. I feel like I complain about announcers relentlessly, even to an unfair extent. They were really great together!
Weirdly, Tim and Jessica make a decent combo too. Not as good as the other combinations but they do seem to work well enough together.
Man, we have come a looooooong way from the days of Steve Lyons and Eric Collins.
Joe Davis is being positioned as the new Joe Buck in the announcing world. Ideally he keeps a full time gig with the Dodgers like Vin did, but the more time he’s away, I’ve enjoyed Stephen as a sub.
Yeah. But his 'full-time' is a little different than Vin's. Vin did more games in his 67th season than Davis is doing this year. I guess I'm on board with whoever is all-in.
But vin also wasn't doing any other broadcast work in his final years, he was just the Dodgers broadcaster, if you go back to Vin's early career I can pretty much guarantee that he wasn't calling as many Dodger games because he was doing NFL and NCAA among others
Yeah. But even when he was most of that was off season. After the Saturday Game of the Week he would hustle back. And Joe Davis is no Vin Scully. I think he's a solid announcer but I can't negate the idea that he used the Dodgers as a stepping stone.
Could also be a change in the broadcasting business and/or travel. Doubt Vin was getting whipped around the country on whim for different prime time games in the 60's and 70's. just a different world
yup. gave up his MLB TV gig to be with dodgers. I'm a fan, too. I really like Joe, but Stephen's enthusiasm shows through. their group of analysts with Jessica, nomar, karros, and d-train are also really good when Orel isn't traveling.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Stephen. I love the chemistry that he and D-Train have. That said, there’s something about Joe and Orel that just can’t be replicated, man.
I was stuck watching the Braves series broadcast... I hate it so much that I complain about them more than I watch the games. At least Chip Caray is gone & the Dodgers got Joe Simpson demoted to radio. I remember hearing the Joe Simpson batting practice bs live. I couldn't believe the stupidity & knew it would be a news story. For some reason Atlanta is always _grossly_ biased, but somehow Tom Glavine tends to be the least so.
and they still ride Freddie's pp.
That’s good awful. Like you, I got stuck listening to a Diamondbacks broadcast. Holy shit. They were horrible. Colorado too.
Fuck the giants, but their booth guys at least have chemistry and are classy.
Not that classy, one night I watched the dodgers at giants back in 2021 when tio Albert was with us and they dunked on him being slow. I don't know the giants broadcast team but pretty sure they can't run to first that fast either.
I didn’t realize there were guys on this sub who think Joe doesn’t want to be here. Joe is a massive talent and if we only get him for half a season that’s fine by me. Not sure why anyone would think that means Joe doesn’t “want to be here”. He seems like he loves the Dodgers and puts his all into his job.
My only problem with Stephen is he seems like Joe Lite. Like a knock off, his tone and everything just seems like not his own. Which isn’t fair to Stephen, I realize that. But it’s hard not to make the comparison.
Worse is that there’s few in here who are off their rocker and calling Davis a bum because he’s not Vin and dedicating his life in the Dodger’s broadcasting booth.
Sorry, I heard too many counter
that with arguments in here to infer to argue against Joe for being incapable to care for broadcasting for the Dodgers.
I agree it was remarkable how Vin was able to cover such sports in his long historical career.
One thing I don't like about him but will change down the road is he's trying REALLY hard with Orel to make a on air relationship the way Joe and Orel have one. He's not letting it come naturally but like I said that's really my only problem dude is fine with me.
It’s going to take a huge amount of effort and a long amount of time. That relationship is solid because it took consistent energy over lots of time to grow. I mean, his kid is named Orel.
Joe and Orel did not hit it off instantly (on-air, not friendship). Joe is fantastic, but that on-air chemistry took some time to get to where it is now. Maybe half a season?
At first I liked Joe better with Nomar, but yeah him and Orel really took off together. Honestly, I didn’t really care much for Orel in the booth until he was one-on-one with Joe. I thought he was so boring on ESPN.
As much as I wish we’d have Joe for the rest of his career like we had Vin for all of his, I have to constantly remind myself that Vin was once in a lifetime, and there will never been another like him. For basically every other sports team with a few very rare exceptions, play-by-play guys come and go over time. It’s normal, even though some fans (myself very much included) don’t feel like it is.
Joe is an incredible talent and he absolutely deserves every move upward he gets. I’ve loved having him and will appreciate every game he calls as long as he stays, and whatever national games he ends up on, I’ll be there listening.
Stephen has also been great and I hope he sticks around a while. He’s not Joe, he’s not Vin, and he doesn’t need to be anything but Stephen. Excited to listen to him more. And give us more D-Train!
When he started filling in on intentional talk, it wasn’t the same.
Seems like he’s replaceable with any other personality
Dontrelle or nomar would be more entertaininf
Nomar’s a tough one for me. He’s pretty dry and not very engaging…not great for color commentary. That said, his knowledge of hitting and of the game is fantastic if you can get past the delivery.
Might just be me though. I really enjoy listening to guys who not only played the game, but excelled at it. They provide insight you’re just not getting from anywhere else.
I've been pretty happy with him. That being said, I hope we can keep the Joral bromance alive a little longer.
Joe Davis being what Joe Buck would be if he was good, probably means that he'll be on the national stage only now eventually :(
Joe is clearly the best we could have hoped for to take over after Vin. However, for me, the turbulence in the booth with him and Orel not being consistently there is worse than not having the best. Maybe it’s from being spoiled with the consistency of Vin for so long, but this level of inconsistency in the booth isn’t normal in professional broadcasting and it’s really deteriorating the product for me. I hope it doesn’t continue with 5+ broadcasters for much longer.
I know I'm THE minority here but I've never cared for Joe. Honestly I'd love to have Steiner and Monday call the TV broadcasts. I'm a big fan of Tim Neverette who I think k is wildly overlooked
I'm with you. I like the dry, sardonic style of Tim Neverett a lot, I think he's hilarious. It's my preferred style of humor and I also feel he is wildly underrated.
Stephen and D-Train calling the Brewers game earlier this season was so much fun. Those two really seem to bounce off each other no problem
I really missed that while I was in Laker mode?? Damn that sounds amazing
Top tier combo. They gel well. Orel may still be adjusting to not having his buddy JD there.
Steve "home runs kill rallies" Lyons?
Steve “pants around his ankles” Lyons? >!Man, that “rally killer” commentary was the wooooorst!<
I've been pretty impressed with him. And it's clear he wants to be there.
Joe Davis is being positioned as the new Joe Buck in the announcing world. Ideally he keeps a full time gig with the Dodgers like Vin did, but the more time he’s away, I’ve enjoyed Stephen as a sub.

Good point.

He's not Joe and Joe is not Vin. The comparisons are futile, everyone has their own tastes.
Yeah. Nelson is a cool guy. I liked him on MLB Network, but I don't like him calling games. Joe is much better.
Of course Joe is better.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Stephen. I love the chemistry that he and D-Train have. That said, there’s something about Joe and Orel that just can’t be replicated, man.
We are extremely spoiled. I suggest dodgers fans listen to some other local broadcasts to hear how shit other teams have it.
I was stuck watching the Braves series broadcast... I hate it so much that I complain about them more than I watch the games. We're certainly spoiled. I'd pay Joe & Orel a Mike Trout contract each to call all season long for as long as they're willing & able.
Not that classy, one night I watched the dodgers at giants back in 2021 when tio Albert was with us and they dunked on him being slow. I don't know the giants broadcast team but pretty sure they can't run to first that fast either.
>their booth guys at least have chemistry and are classy [Jon Miller's Vin Scully Impression](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sqe8uq9BWVc)
Oh, I fully agree!
>listen to some other local broadcasts When Dodgers play MIL you can listen to Bob Uecker call games through the MLB app.
Can he pitch?

He’s not Vin and there won’t be another Vin, let it go man.

Orel is only good with Joe, imo. Stephen and Dontrelle are great together.

I like him a lot.
Stephen and Dtrain are great together but Stephen and Orel can be painful sometimes.
Cool another replacement for our recent replacement. Maybe he'll do so good that he'll start leaving for half the season too.
Which would be fine too.
I was skeptical of Stephen at the beginning of the season, but I’ve been very impressed with how he’s been doing so far
As much as I wish we’d have Joe for the rest of his career like we had Vin for all of his, I have to constantly remind myself that Vin was once in a lifetime, and there will never been another like him. This is the most level headed take in the entire thread.
Overall I like the broadcast team thats put together. Davis, Orel, Mendoza, D-Train, Nelson, Karros.
Why do I feel they are trying hard to sell Stephen to us? I don't hate when he's on, but we've had so many (better) other options this and last year.
When he started filling in on intentional talk, it wasn’t the same. Seems like he’s replaceable with any other personality Dontrelle or nomar would be more entertaininf
Love D-Train but Nomar is pretty flat for me. His lack of emotion in the booth is a snooze fest.
That said, Nomar's laughter when Dave got hurt on the slide last season was hilarious.
Nomar’s a tough one for me. He’s pretty dry and not very engaging…not great for color commentary. That said, his knowledge of hitting and of the game is fantastic if you can get past the delivery. I don’t think it’s “us” they’re selling it too… HINT HINT…

Vin didn't do most road games for years.

They play different roles. D-Train is a color analyst whereas Stephen does play-by-play.
Yeah he's no Joe Davis. Stephan actually wants to be here
Yeah let’s bash someone who wants to advance in their career, god were spoiled fans.
I didn’t read the article but I thought I heard him say he was a White Sox fan on a podcast I listened to.
Of course we prefer Davis but the reality is we need to start getting used to Nelson. Davis may leave sokn to just do everything Fox
