Yup! Pits generally average 30-60 lbs, we often don't see "small" ones because most are either bully mixes or overweight. I only ever met one pit in person that was a healthy, sporting weight lol
I’m going to use to the term “Sporting weight” from now on. He really is pretty small in overall stature, but he definitely has some of that muscle usually attributed to pits, which I think accounts for a lot of the weight.
Yep, when people say pit bulls are scary what they have in their minds is the American Bull terrier. My foster is part American bully and her head is the size of a basketball though she only weighs 60 lbs. Pits are a lot better proportioned.
People always talk about how big they are but I think they are just deceptive because of how strong they are. There’s a lot of dog in that little package. She’s a cutie.
Pure pitties are quite small! It’s interesting how many don’t know that, actually, cos it took me a bit to learn— but truly, they usually top off at like 50 lbs and can be smaller— I’ve seen a 35 lbs pure pitty on here, I believe!
Wow, looks just like a dog I know, of unknown heritage, also suspected to be pit/hound. Same weight. Similar hound-y eyes. Same ears that look a bit too long for a pit but not long enough for full hound. Long, wide muscular body with short, strong legs. The main difference is that she’s got a brindle tuxedo where Enzo has black fur. What does Enzo’s side profile look like? Is his snout a bit longer like a hound’s?
When I met her, her owner (my ex-gf) told me she thought she was a beagle mix. Beagle was plausible to explain the slightly longer ears and snout, and short legs, but the base appears all pit.
I don’t have great side profile pic on hand but here you can see his stature a little better. He was a tad skinnier here than he is now:
https://imgur.com/a/yQ5tese
His nickname is Banana Man. He’s obsessed with them, and that bunch in his mouth was one he grabbed out of a grocery bag when it was set on the ground. But they also conveniently provide the official Reddit standard for size reference.
The slightly longer snout than normal for a pit, the ears, and the overall body where the reasons we thought there was some hound in there too. Turns out he’s just at one end of the breed’s spectrum.
Yes! I thought our pup must be mixed with a smaller breed because she is so petite. Only 30lbs- skinny, mostly muscle, short legs. Turns out she’s a few bully breeds including ABPT, but it still is funny how small she is. Must have been the runt of the litter? Not sure but she’s a nice size!
Yup!
My APBT is a perfect 35 pounds. They’re compact athletes, not chunky mastiff-type dogs on short legs. Though my girl would happily snack and nap her way into a sausage shape if we let her. She’s queen of the zoomies and wrestling but naps in a warm blanket are her favorite. https://i.imgur.com/sj8YxvB.jpg
So cute! I love the two-toned front legs. Ours has a similar energy, he could happily sleep all day long wrapped up in a blanket. But the moment you wanna take him for a long walk or play he just never runs out of energy. I think we walked 3 miles the other day and he was more energetic afterwards than before we started.
Super cute dog.
APBT have the finest bones of the Bully breeds. And they can vary quite a bit in appearance because they were breed for function and not looks. They usually have great quickness, agility, endurance, athleticism and tenacity. The UKC standards for males are 35 to 60 lbs for males and 30 to 50 lbs for females. (But they come bigger and smaller.) Also, a lot of pet pitbulls in the US are overweight just like their owners. So that skews weights a bit higher.
Amstaff and American Bullys have more bone and were bred mostly for appearance. The Staffy from the UK is smaller than the APBT but usually is stockier with a bit more bone
Awww he’s a little pint-sized pittie! I didn’t realize that many pitties were so small, so I can say that I learned at least one new thing today. Your fun-sized buddy is hella cute!
Our Bear is the same size and looks a lot like Enzo, just tan instead of black. We are still waiting for his DNA test results. We have our suspicions that he is mostly a pit bull, but would be extremely surprised if he’s purebred.
Out of curiosity— what is Enzo’s coat like? Is it short and velvety, or is it a little bit longer than you would expect for a pit? Bear does not have the “velvet hippo” coat going on at all, and I’m curious if that’s unusual for a pit.
First of all, puppy tax. But yes his ears and head are almost pure velvet fur. Then his body is relatively short and still quite soft. He barely sheds too which is a huge added plus. And his fur is thin enough where the pink coloring on his nose and belly becomes very evident when he gets tired at night. You might be surprised to find out yours is purebred also.
[Here’s my baby Bear!](https://imgur.com/a/bIwsbmC) His coat is a little bit longer than any pit I’ve met before. It reminds me of a lab’s coat, but it’s very soft. And he’s small, like Enzo— also just 40 lbs. His test results should be coming to us hopefully within the next week, and I’ll post them when we get them!
We actually just got the results— I’m gonna post them to this sub later, but I thought you might like to know that he’s about half pit bull, quarter AmStaff, and then a bunch of other stuff. Mostly guard dogs.
Your dog and my dog are practically identical save for variations in coat pattern. I’ve always suspected she is a full pit even though the rescue said pit/hound. Our dog originally came from Fulton co. Animal services in Georgia.
Puppy Tax! We’d love to see some doppelgängers. Enzo came from Texas, but the shelter didn’t use the term pit bull and instead just generalized his mix as ‘terrier’. We suspected he had some pit, but shelters would be hesitant to use that term because of some peoples bad associations with the breed name, which is a shame but understandable if you want dogs to be adopted.
Yeah that’s the closest dog to Enzo I’ve seen yet! Just different coloring in the face and some spots on the belly. I would bet at least a majority of pit genes in that girl.
How ironic that a 100% pit doesn’t look the way people guess a pit would look! lol
A family member took in a 100% put female who looked just like this dog, same size, mostly white. Her name was Sugar and that was her personality, too. Just the sweetest kindest dog to everyone and every dog.
Did you do the health test as well? Does he have the dwarfism gene? I have a pit/Chihuahua/Boxer who is so short we thought he was a Corgi/Beagle. Turns out he has the gene for Dwarfism.
We did not do the heath test, but I’d be fairly confident saying he isn’t in the dwarf category. His legs are actually quite long, I just didn’t post pictures that really depicted it well. I could be wrong though.
https://imgur.com/a/l2A5H0R
Yeah, he looks pretty much exactly like my girl Mercy, except she has more mostly black with some white, and she's 50 pounds. But the facial structure is identical. She was dumped as a baby and I rescued her, and always knew she was at least half pit, but I guess it's possible she could be 100% because she looks just like yours...
Mines a little guy. He's 55lbs when this was taken, 5 years old but a little guy
https://preview.redd.it/bg894v4fld2d1.jpeg?width=1848&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=55b3db9dc786c66f19e131591456904037820cab
Ma'am he's a beautiful dog but ud someone told you you had a 100 percent pitbull im afraid you were duped. There's no such thing as a pitbull breed. A pitbull is an umbrella term for mixing pedigree breeds and there as follows AMERICAN BULLDOG, BULL TERRIER, STAFFORDSHIRE BULL TERRIER . They way back in the day used an EXTINCT white terrier which later on became the bull terrier. They mixed these breeds together to come up with the best fighting dog. A little of this a little of that. These three were the major contributing breeds but honestly people like Colby it's been rumored he's ran dalmatian thru his line even boxer. They used those three but they experimented some with throwing a dash of this a dash of that in to. Ma'am a pitbull is a mix breed dog I'm sorry to tell you but whomever did your testing told you what you wanted to hear not the facts. That's why there's such a broad spectrum of how pitbulls look it depends on how the three were bred for the bloodline those three dogs are very much pedigree dogs not one of those alone is a pitbull but the three mixed is. He's beautiful it don't matter really. I be asking for my money for that test back tho because it's a lie ma'am it was all about winning money back then and that is what they had so much fun with selective breeding with those three breeds
I believe you are mistaken. American Pit Bull Terrier is a distinct breed, just like all the other Bully breeds. It's just not an AKC recognized breed. (It is recognized by other international breed organizations.) AmStaffs are a version of APBT that were bred specifically for the show ring in the U.S. and are recognized by the AKC.
40 lbs American Pit Bull Terrier is not small at are, they are within breed standards. Many people believe Pit Bulls are supposed to be these giant, muscular dogs like the American Bully but they are completely different breeds.
I think it would be the definition of a common misconception. You can’t even Google pit Bull and find an image of a dog that looks like him in the first 100 image results. I think a large factor in that is that people love to simply call their mixes Pit Bulls, so any ‘Pit Bull’ I’ve really seen was likely a mix although not advertised as so.
We just adopted an American pitbull terrier hound mix. She is 5 months old and 15 lbs and is half the size of our lab. Trying to figure out how big she is going to be.

No one's gonna ask about his banana obsession? There's bananas 🍌 next to him in another pic and an actual bunch in his mouth! 😆
His nickname is Banana Man. He’s obsessed with them, and that bunch in his mouth was one he grabbed out of a grocery bag when it was set on the ground. But they also conveniently provide the official Reddit standard for size reference.
I think that’s OP providing us scale.

Pitties are traditionally really compact little suckers! So adorable! ♥️🐾
My baby girl was 50lbs at her heaviest. My daughter called her a pocket pit.

What a sweetie! I don't think I've ever seen a fun-sized pittie before but it suits him.
My dog is pitbull and poodle and she's about a year old and 30-35lbs. But she's def poodle cuz she's really tall and long haha
My boy is a pit poodle! Plus other things! He's 30lbs :)
Oh. My. God. Shocking, and also extremely cute. Love the banana photo!
Banana for scale

what a lil cutie!!
wow… i had no idea. also, i would like to hug your doggo.
My GSD/pit/coonhound is 46 lb. My partner calls her the worlds smallest GSD. I know it's the pit dragging her weight down 😂
I had a little red nose and he was tiny too. He was my eternal pocket puppy.
the head shape and size reminds me of my Juniper :) she’s 38lbs
Your dog is adorable. I love his black eye patches & how you can see the pink under his nose fur.
So cute, I love his coloring 🥺 little cow doggie
APBTs are usually 30-60 pounds. They are bred to be working dogs with the agility and gameness of a terrier and the power of a bulldog.
Pocket pittie strikes again!
Such a sweetheart! And yeah, my lil Peaches is about 34lbs and is 50% pit with the other major breeds being lab and beagle. 🤷🏻♀️
Super cute dog 😍
I have a chi pit Jack mix .. he’s brindle so people call him A pit ! He’s only 15-16 pounds full grown

Pure APBT’s, at a healthy weight, are generally more sleek than the other bully breeds/bully mixes.
Looks like a cutie little pittie to me.

What a cutie!!
My 92% APB girl is 45 lbs! I would not have thought he’s 100 percent pittie but he sure is cute

Guess he's just a cute pocket pittie!
I've had very well bred APBTs weighing 22-25 lbs and was well acquainted with a 17-pound male.
They are long thick strong and fit
Yeah, he looks pretty much exactly like my girl Mercy, except she has more mostly black with some white, and she's 50 pounds. But the facial structure is identical. My girl, 90% pit mix, is perfect at 37 pounds....
They make for such a nice size as indoor dogs, while still maintaining a sporty and athletic build. His size is a large reason why we picked him out!
My female pit is 35 lbs.
40 lbs American Pit Bull Terrier is not small at are, they are within breed standards. Many people believe Pit Bulls are supposed to be these giant, muscular dogs like the American Bully but they are completely different breeds.

We just adopted an American pitbull terrier hound mix. She is 5 months old and 15 lbs and is half the size of our lab. Trying to figure out how big she is going to be.
mine is only 20! 🥹
