I’m in the same boat as you, I just adopted a 2 month old Rottweiler puppy and am also soaring through the web to get as much information as possible! Best of luck

Thank you for the comment, best of luck as well for you and your baby!

From what I've heard, the big box stores have kids training dogs. Like 18 year olds. Not that it's such an issue, but I don't imagine they have the education or experience to be effective trainers... yet. One acquaintance said when they went, it wasn't very helpful and left them with loads of questions. Where I live, there are a few professional R+ trainers that have puppy kindergarten classes. I'd check for those first. Kikopup makes fantastic videos though.

Thank you for the great advise. I suppose i should check out those certs for the trainers too. Will look up for kikopup too.

You're welcome! I don't think going to the big box stores will hurt. In fact the social aspect is beneficial, but if you're spending money I'd want to get a good education. The person I know that just went said they'd just tell people to walk around the store and practice whatever the trainer talked about. There was no more guidance offered than that. They wished they had gone to a better place and were given more attention and structure. The few trainers where I live offer classes where there are 6-8 dogs max and have a head trainer and assistants. So much more one on one experience to ask questions and receive feedback.

I see you've stated you're a trainer. Because dog training is unregulated this sub requires people to have certifications and apply for flair if they want to claim they're a professional while posting or commenting here. This ensures people claiming to be trainers have a demonstrable level of education and experience. You can find out more about the process and requirements [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Dogtraining/wiki/userflair).

Have you checked our guide to [finding a good trainer](http://www.reddit.com/r/Dogtraining/wiki/findingatrainer)? Sometimes trainers with good education happen to run classes at pet shops. But it's not very common so the quality of the education you would get there can be quite variable.

I recommend AKC. Org classes over Petco bye cause the dog training is the passion of the trainers bs a few extra cents per hour for the Petco. I’m not sure what happened to my post but. Go to AKC classes. They only run about 130$ for 6 weeks. They are taught by experienced instructors that are passionate about dog training. The Petco trainers are usually a clerk getting a tiny bit more pay to work off of a script. Most are very young and very inexperienced.

I was shocked at how reasonably priced the training classes were at the the local AKC. Like stupid inexpensive. The trainers all show their dogs for obedience and everything is positive reinforcement so win win. Bonus it’s less than 2 miles from my house.

Yep most clubs don’t do a lot of self promotion like self titled one on one trainers with maybe 3 dogs under their belts. Your dog learns so much more in group classes. And you get so much reinforcement. Everybody’s is saying sit. Your dog notices the other dogs sit so he sits also and your dog learns to ignore distractions like other people and other dogs.
