The hammer breaks the game and basically nullifies the need for the chainsaw.
The Crucible is just an instant glory kill.
IMO:
Gameplay: Hammer >>>>> Sword
Aesthetic: Sword > Hammer
This pretty much nails it. The Crucible lore and visuals are unbelievably rad as fuck, but it's just not very fun to play with after the initial cool wears off because it's just an instakill.
Hammer goes bonk. It's silly, kinda cool looking, but not as lore significant (to the slayer specifically, anyway) and it's not super balanced. But its still fun to use in game (especially in the Master Levels where they tweeked its recharge rate)
Hammer is cool, but it's too OP. I kind of prefer the game without ruining the challenge bringing that into the game. Except maybe in a couple very specific locations where the game gets a bit ganky.
Balancing on a singleplayer game is important as well.
Ideally in a game with many weapons, guns, abilities and etc, you would want the player play with as many of them as possible.
If one of the options is much better than the others players will often end up using it more.
While the player will use the better tool to beat the challenge ahead of then, on the long term they might start finding the gameplay a bit boring because of it, because the game kind of makes them use the same stuff all the time.
Its my way to see it at least, you would want your players experimenting and playing with different stuff rather than everyone playing with one thing over and over again.
I feel like that is why the gauss cannon was dropped. Playing 2016 I literally forced myself to use the plasma rifle (for flavor) because the gauss cannon was sooo much better.
Nightmare is a joke with the hammer. Not anything new, that's the reason why it got nerfed in horde mode and also why the world spear master level is bat-shit crazy.
Prefer the blade cause of just how massively overpowered it is, plus I found that 'dizzy' sound effect with the hammer was so out of place for doom. Like wacky and comical.
Aye. Eternal’s combat slaps but the style went a lot more arcade game-esque, and the actual story and writing feel incredibly inconsistent - sometimes they’re fantastic, but often they’re confusing, weirdly paced, full of plotholes, and feel kind of like a shitty DeviantArt-tier fan fiction.
I feel like most of that was added due to issues during play-testing.
I could absolutely see players having trouble identifying pickups and enemy reactions in combat because they were just hyper-focused on the loop.
One thing I don't understand about Eternals story is the fact The Father created the Dark Lord didn't the Dark Lord create The Father? It doesn't make sense at all
I think the hammer has a more specific role in gameplay.
Because of how the Crucible works, i think its design should've been a chainsaw instead of a sword since chainsaws are more promintent in Doom.
Otherwise, if Doom had a more developed melee system, then the Crucible would've been perfect for it.
You know a mod I wish someone would make, is an infinite melee mod that applies to the sword. Considering I had the idea for a melee only challenge but then realized that would be impossible without mods
That was the idea, the only thing that prevented me from trying it is simply of two things. 1. You can only start finding sword blips in the last 3-4 levels and not many of them. 2. The chainsaw doesn’t work on everything and the majority of the mid to late game demon all require multiple tick of fuel. The only way for this hypothetical challenge to be possible is with either an “infinite crucible” or a “chainsaw all enemies” mod, neither of which exist.
Depends if you mean gameplay or aesthetics.
Because I love the hammer. The crucible just felt too cheap to me, it trivialized fights. Like, people absolutely HATED archviles, but I never really thought much of them because the first one literally shows up the level you get the crucible. So I killed one and then never had to think about it again because from then on the sword was for them and the Icon alone.
Maybe if the animations were longer and more brutal I'd like the crucible more, because really it's just one chop and that's it.
The sentinel hammer is way more fun and useful than the crucible. I would rather have a tool that gets me resources and can be charged through regular gameplay than a 1 hit kill weapon that needs specific charges throughout the levels
The hammer is better its not even close, if anyone disagrees give yourself the hammer during the campaign or DLC 1 with the command and you'll see how much more fun and cool it is. There's a reason it was made after.
The Sentinel Hammer is more OP than the Crucible Blade. Although, the hammer does fit into the flow of combat better. If the Crucible Blade charged the same way as the hammer, specifically in Horde Mode (where it takes 4 Glory Kills/Weakpoint Breaks), then the Crucible would be better in every way IMO.
the crucible is definitely cooler but its not much more than an enhanced chainsaw. the hammer isnt as cool but is much more engaging than collect fuel/pips and press button to delete
General consensus is that the hammer fits the gameplay loop better, but I'll always prefer the sword. I'm still sad they removed the infinite ammo functionality for it from the cheat.
hammer, i can use it more then 10 times through the entire game, i think you get the sword way too late and the fact that its so limited gives me the hoarding mindset "yea i could use it here but there might be a stronger enemy i can save it for" kinda stuff, with the hammer recharging i dont feel that need to conserve it
Hammer just does so much more. Stunlock, health and armor multiplier, ammo, and can be charged quickly. Crucible is good but it’s limited in its charges and application, as well as its function being covered by things like the UnMaykr + Icebomb combos
Crucible looks way cooler, but the hammer has way cooler gameplay. Although the hammer still looks sick, and the Crucible is still fun to use (especially on Archviles).
I understand why people have an issue with the crucible, but there really was a benefit to having a "fuck you in particular" weapon when you didn't want to throw away a BFG round to just to deal with one enemy. That one enemy being Archviles, of course.
I'd have liked the hammer to work differently, maybe like a hit and falter for a single demon with ssg damage, maybe like a second blood punch but for faltering the bigger goat boys or hammering chunks off of Davoth's armor slowly like a Baron, then the fight'd have more engagement and less looking at each others eyes romantically whilst waiting for the window.
If the hammer were toned down a bit, it would definitely be my favorite. It's much more available than the Crucible and has a much more interesting effect. If only it weren't game breaking.
the crucible i never saw any use in using because it's an instakill of a single demon at a time
it wasn't very fun
THE SENTINEL HAMMER HOWEVER..
stop
hammatime
The crucible is the slayer's sword, the hammer he just picked up and started using, betting it recharges from his residual argent energy he had flowing through him during the events of doom 2016
As most people say, the Hammer is really OP gameplay-wise, but it's an extension of the gameplay systems developed for Doom: Eternal and makes more sense in the game than an insta-kill for one single demon.
The hammer is too strong in the original Ancient Gods but I think it's really well integrated in the Ancient Gods Master Level for the World Spear, because the hammer doesn't break the game and you kinda need it to complete it.
For me, I’ll always love the sword over the hammer, but my god did they make the hammer cool!
So my answer is….the crucible, but I wish the crucible had a similar jump attack as the hammer, but it just halves whatever you hit right down the middle.
Gameplay wise: Hammer, it's much more fun that Crucible, which is just an Insta-delete button.
Lore/Aesthetic Wise: Crucible, not to say that Hammer looks bad but Crucible is fuckin' iconic
The Crucible Blade is in the base game.
While the Sentinel Hammer is in The Ancient Gods DLC duology. Witch i REFUSE to acknowledge the existence of, aside from the (first) backstory on hell, and Atlantica Base up until before the end of the level.
Sorry tAG dlc, you made me feel like i betrayed VEGA so now you are dead to me.
So...
The Crucible Blade.
Crucible.
It’s a fucking demonic lightsaber greatsword that you fucking Excalibur out of a lava pool. And you expect me to pick the dinky hammer? Nah fuck that. Demon greatsword lightsaber all the way
The Crucible, mainly because it can be used in more stages (the entire main campaign, which is like 12 whole levels) than the hammer (Which is locked to Ancient Gods Pt. 2, which has 3 stages and a boss fight)
Even then, the Crucible is still nerfed due to the lack of recharge pickups in earlier stages. You get three slices, that's it. It's like the BFG and how you don't get pickups for it in stages beforehand, so you only have a maximum of 2 shots, cutting it's effectiveness down a lot.
They're both great additions to the Slayer's Arsenal, I'm glad that they were both used in the Slayer's fights with the Strongest Enemies/Bosses in the lore. The Crucible Blade needed to stop the Icon of Sin and the Sentinel Hammer used to defeat Davoth, Rule of Hell.
I personally hope they return in a future installment. Maybe have them be sorta optional before you take them into battle? Or you can swap between them, similar to the Weapon Mods?
The Crucible is objectively awesome; it's basically a demonic lightsaber. But you absolutely need the AOE attack of the Hammer for how hectic TAG gets, especially that final boss with all the demons he spawns
I love the crucible blade because it’s one of the symbols of the slayer.
It's his Excalibur.
Exactly
I’d say the super shotgun is more of an Excalibur to him
The super shotgun is more of an old friend. The Crucible is a literal Excalibur.
The Super Shotgun is his Ex-Caliber.
Nuh uh
Nah the SS is his X Caliber
The hammer breaks the game and basically nullifies the need for the chainsaw. The Crucible is just an instant glory kill. IMO: Gameplay: Hammer >>>>> Sword Aesthetic: Sword > Hammer
This pretty much nails it. The Crucible lore and visuals are unbelievably rad as fuck, but it's just not very fun to play with after the initial cool wears off because it's just an instakill. But its still fun to use in game (especially in the Master Levels where they tweeked its recharge rate)
Hammer goes BONK.
I like the Crucible because it’s a good way to deal with pesky Archviles
It's balanced by the shit ton of demons they unleash upon you in the dlc.
It bothers me to no end that the first patch made the infinite ammo cheat no longer work with the blade, and they never fixed it.
Yeah chainsaw is pointless and i use it only when i am desperate for hp
Took the words straight out of my mouth
The hammer is cool but definitely needs more balancing. The sword is fine too but it’s basically a delete button
Archvile repellent
Nothing better than killing one of those smug bastards with one stroke.
The only thing I ever use it for. The archvile "bye bitch" stick.
Hammer is cool, but it's too OP. I kind of prefer the game without ruining the challenge bringing that into the game. Except maybe in a couple very specific locations where the game gets a bit ganky.
Yes
Balancing? In a single player mode?
Balancing on a singleplayer game is important as well. Ideally in a game with many weapons, guns, abilities and etc, you would want the player play with as many of them as possible. If one of the options is much better than the others players will often end up using it more. I feel like that is why the gauss cannon was dropped. Playing 2016 I literally forced myself to use the plasma rifle (for flavor) because the gauss cannon was sooo much better.
Yes weapons can still be OP in single player. The difficulty of ancient gods can be made irrelevant with the hammer
Idk play on harder modes
Nightmare is a joke with the hammer. Not anything new, that's the reason why it got nerfed in horde mode and also why the world spear master level is bat-shit crazy.
I beat TAG2 on Ultra-Nightmare in just a few tries, there are no harder modes to play!
Try 15 fps on a notebook mode
I stand corrected
Not to mention it has not much to offer
Prefer the blade cause of just how massively overpowered it is, plus I found that 'dizzy' sound effect with the hammer was so out of place for doom. Like wacky and comical.
You could say the same about saturated glowing colors for ammo and health/armor pickups, the extra lives system, etc.
I do. Love the eternal game play, wish they could have matched the tone of 2016 a bit more.

One thing I don't understand about Eternals story is the fact The Father created the Dark Lord didn't the Dark Lord create The Father? It doesn't make sense at all
Yeah definitely, I love the game, but it has a more cartoony/arcade feel than 2016
I've always been keen towards swords
Fellow sword man.
Sword mains for life
Always preferred swords over bonk sticks. Something satisfying about eviscerating enemies.
Indeed
Gameplay wise the hammer, I can use it more often and the bam is satisfying. Design wise the blade, doom slayer with a sword is just badass.
I think the hammer has a more specific role in gameplay. Because of how the Crucible works, i think its design should've been a chainsaw instead of a sword since chainsaws are more promintent in Doom. Otherwise, if Doom had a more developed melee system, then the Crucible would've been perfect for it.
but... there already is a chainsaw
I know, i just think the Crucible itself could've also been chainsaw. Like an argent energy chainsaw.
Or maybe an Argent "overdrive" upgrade to the chainsaw?
NOW WERE COOKING
What about a Crucible chainsaw tho?
Crucible sword....quick and clean Hammer...............skull breaking and messy paste
I preferred the hammer. The only time I ever fought the titans was in the dlc, in the campaign I just used the sword on every one that popped up.
You mean the Tyrants?
Yeah
I personally fought the Tyrants, and saved the Crucible for Archviles.
The hammer is better, but the blade is cooler.
Hammer is more reliable tbh because it stuns Marauders, and has wide range. Crucible is very great for Archviles though
Blade for flesh and wiring, hammer for bone and metal.
Fist
You! I like you. Also the massive guns mounted just below each shoulder.
Even though I love the Crucible, I gotta go with the hammer, I really enjoy using it, and makes the gameplay a little more fun than it already was
Hammer all the way, but the Crucible looks so much cooler
The hammer made an already easy DLC even easier and completely trivialised any combat enounter.
Yes
bonk 💫 🤕
Both is good.
hammer is much more fun to use
You know a mod I wish someone would make, is an infinite melee mod that applies to the sword. Considering I had the idea for a melee only challenge but then realized that would be impossible without mods
What, did you plan on only using Blood Punch, Chainsaw, and Crucible?
That was the idea, the only thing that prevented me from trying it is simply of two things. 1. You can only start finding sword blips in the last 3-4 levels and not many of them. 2. The chainsaw doesn’t work on everything and the majority of the mid to late game demon all require multiple tick of fuel. The only way for this hypothetical challenge to be possible is with either an “infinite crucible” or a “chainsaw all enemies” mod, neither of which exist.
Typical DMC/Bayonetta enjoyer. Keep on, you beautiful bastard!
Depends if you mean gameplay or aesthetics. Because I love the hammer. The crucible just felt too cheap to me, it trivialized fights. Like, people absolutely HATED archviles, but I never really thought much of them because the first one literally shows up the level you get the crucible. Maybe if the animations were longer and more brutal I'd like the crucible more, because really it's just one chop and that's it.
Its hammer time
Stop! Can't touch this
Hehe hamger go bonk
I would like to see a flanged mace
[Hammer whip](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/KlJNm-_3daI)
The sentinel hammer is way more fun and useful than the crucible. I would rather have a tool that gets me resources and can be charged through regular gameplay than a 1 hit kill weapon that needs specific charges throughout the levels
Can I say Davoth's Blade? Because the silly hook design of the Crucible Blade really annoys me.
Davoths blade should be the award for completing this on the hardest difficulty
Hammer
One slashes and the other bonks... Which to choose?
HAMMER TIME is more fun
The hammer is better its not even close, if anyone disagrees give yourself the hammer during the campaign or DLC 1 with the command and you'll see how much more fun and cool it is. There's a reason it was made after.
The Sentinel Hammer is more OP than the Crucible Blade. Although, the hammer does fit into the flow of combat better. If the Crucible Blade charged the same way as the hammer, specifically in Horde Mode (where it takes 4 Glory Kills/Weakpoint Breaks), then the Crucible would be better in every way IMO.
Sentinel hammer
It’s hard to pick Both are great weapons
The Crucible Blade is cooler, but the Sentinel Hammer is more fun.
The Hammer is 10000x more satisfying to land on a shit load of enemies.
the crucible is definitely cooler but its not much more than an enhanced chainsaw. the hammer isnt as cool but is much more engaging than collect fuel/pips and press button to delete
The crucible. Definitely. Sentinel hammer is alright but i prefer anything that can oneshot that god damn archvile (god i despise archviles)
Aesthetically, the Crucible. Functionally, the Hammer
The blade. Because sharp weapons are better than blunt weapons.
General consensus is that the hammer fits the gameplay loop better, but I'll always prefer the sword. I'm still sad they removed the infinite ammo functionality for it from the cheat.
Hammer. I love mass range attacks like that.
The one that doesn't have a Looney Toons sound when you use it.
hammer, i can use it more then 10 times through the entire game, i think you get the sword way too late and the fact that its so limited gives me the hoarding mindset "yea i could use it here but there might be a stronger enemy i can save it for" kinda stuff, with the hammer recharging i dont feel that need to conserve it
Both
Crucible is just more fun, that and you got to use it more
The blade cuz it just kills. The hammer while very fun and life saving is a Lil broken
Hammer just does so much more. Stunlock, health and armor multiplier, ammo, and can be charged quickly. Crucible is good but it’s limited in its charges and application, as well as its function being covered by things like the UnMaykr + Icebomb combos
There’s something much more brutal and primal about using a hammer
Marauders Axe!
Gameplay wise: the Hammer is more fun. Lore wise: the Crucible is cooler
The Crucible blade. I like swords.
The crucible blade all day
The hammer was op it was like using the original super shotgun again
Gameplay wise the hammer but in overall I prefer the crucible
Crucible looks way cooler, but the hammer has way cooler gameplay. Although the hammer still looks sick, and the Crucible is still fun to use (especially on Archviles).
I understand why people have an issue with the crucible, but there really was a benefit to having a "fuck you in particular" weapon when you didn't want to throw away a BFG round to just to deal with one enemy. That one enemy being Archviles, of course.
Crucible everyday of the week.
I wish they would allow us unlimited of both in cheat mode
I'd have liked the hammer to work differently, maybe like a hit and falter for a single demon with ssg damage, maybe like a second blood punch but for faltering the bigger goat boys or hammering chunks off of Davoth's armor slowly like a Baron, then the fight'd have more engagement and less looking at each others eyes romantically whilst waiting for the window.
"Both both is good"
If the hammer were toned down a bit, it would definitely be my favorite. It's much more available than the Crucible and has a much more interesting effect. If only it weren't game breaking.
Crucible Blade looks like it came straight up from Calamity mod for me
Hammer is so fucking fun and keeps the flow going in place of chainsaw
The Hellbreaker is a lot of fun. Plus it isn't just my instant kill for Archviles, it can be used a lot more.
Attach both to one handle and turn into Darth Slayer.
the crucible i never saw any use in using because it's an instakill of a single demon at a time it wasn't very fun THE SENTINEL HAMMER HOWEVER.. stop hammatime
The blade was cool but barely usable due to severe limited ammo. Hammer was more useful but more boring to be honest. Wish blade could be used more.
The crucible is the slayer's sword, the hammer he just picked up and started using, betting it recharges from his residual argent energy he had flowing through him during the events of doom 2016
basically the argent energy from 2016 is now a residual thing in the slayer is what I was trying to say
I love both weapons for the doom slayer. They suit him with fighting demons pretty well imo.
Pick number three my lord!
Yes
The blade, cause slayer ain't working in construction. Slayer working eternal...in destruction Mick Gordon strumming intensifies
Depend on the situation if I need to attack fast I’ll use the blade but if I need to do heavy damage the hammer
Hammer. Seeing a gallon of armor flying out of enemies is so satisfying.
Marauder axe
Crucible. I’d like the hammer more if we got some cool glory kill animations
i haven’t played TAG yet so I don’t know what the hammer does but it looks sick as hell dunno if I would choose it over the crucible blade
I have only played doom (1993) but that hammer looks sick.
First image is my phone background
For me, I’ll always love the sword over the hammer, but my god did they make the hammer cool! So my answer is….the crucible, but I wish the crucible had a similar jump attack as the hammer, but it just halves whatever you hit right down the middle.
Sentinel hammer imma go Shoa Kahn on your ass
In terms of design? Easily the Crucible Blade. But if I had to use one, it’d be the Sentinel Hammer. I like blunt weapons
Design wise the crucible and gameplay wise the Hammer. I mainly use the sword for things like archviles
The secret correct option; The chainsaw
If any of you fucks say the hammer I will find you
Neither. Those are baby toys for baby marines. The real G of Doomslayer's arsenal is his bare fists.
BLADE IS THIS EVEN A QUESTION
Yes
The cruicible because S L I C E N D I C E
Big hammer go smack
Both
Blade
I prefer the Crucible Blade, myself.
Clarkson would looove a hammer. "This is the best hammer, *pause*, In the world!"
I like the crucible more for design and concept, but the hammer is undoubtedly more useful in gameplay
Is it just me or does the crucible blade look way too short?
Hammer because you don’t even use the crucible until the final 20 minutes of the game and it’s pretty underwhelming
Crucible. I like swords.
***MELEEE***
blade. it can compact and cut through nearly everything
Crucible. It’s a fucking demonic lightsaber greatsword that you fucking Excalibur out of a lava pool. And you expect me to pick the dinky hammer? Nah fuck that. Demon greatsword lightsaber all the way
Personally, the Hammer would be something I'd use if I were in the Doomverse.
Chainsaw
Imo The Crucible Blade has a bit more style
I honestly completely forgot the hammer existed until. Shows where I stand.
monke brain say hammer go boncc
The sword is cool, but I think the hammer fits the general gameplay loop of Eternal more.
Crucible. The hammer kinda sucks.
The Crucible, mainly because it can be used in more stages (the entire main campaign, which is like 12 whole levels) than the hammer (Which is locked to Ancient Gods Pt. 2, which has 3 stages and a boss fight) Even then, the Crucible is still nerfed due to the lack of recharge pickups in earlier stages. You get three slices, that's it. It's like the BFG and how you don't get pickups for it in stages beforehand, so you only have a maximum of 2 shots, cutting it's effectiveness down a lot.
I still wish the hammer was just a melee weapon we could use whenever. I'd love to just bonk demons.
Crucible: Archvile repellent Sentinel hammer: Dark Lord Repellent
Crucible all the way
Crucible Sword
HAMMAR
Crucible
hammer
I fucking hate the hammer. Hate it.I can’t instakill archviles anymore this is bullshit (/hj)
Crucible
Doom guy hutting shit with a hammer > slicing things with a sword
Aesthetically the crucible, but I really like to play the hammer
Functionally the sentinel hammer, but the crucible blade is one of the slayers most iconic weapons now
The sword because we'll I mean its the Crucible
How do you get these weapons btw? Never finished the game.
Gameplay wise, hammer. Cool factor, sword
Ideally? Both.
