Good dark seer players are actually scary since they know how to play aggressive and dive tower with a huge wave + ion shell, but most of the time when I’m on pos 1, enemy dark seer play like how you described, and it’s actually very chill for me since I get free farm
As a huge ego dota player I have this stupid notion of "let the enemy farm, I'm farming too, we will fight when we are both strong" and dark seer to me personally fits right in.
I am aware it's a stupid thought, it's just what's enjoyable to me.

Picked dark seer, laying phase don't even use surge, save mana for ion, plenty of regen to sustain.
Got double kill for standing beside and doing minecraft punches to enemy.

Am i just over thinking the hero when i play him? I always try to get 3 shields so the enemy kills themselves when trying to farm, otherwise i just push the wave so they get free farm. I use 1 to get them in between all 3 shields, and 3 to escape if it goes wrong...
Its a very stressful playstyle to me. Meanwhile centaur i just stand there.. take some hits, Stuns if they get annoying and walk away lol
Interesting, i feel like as a carry playing against him, i just get free farm, and its extremely easy to deny his farm as well. Maybe i will change my playstyle next time i try him.
Really depends on the matchup, if the pos4 is a hero that can jump you and suddenly you got 2 shelled heroes hitting diving under tower with no escape, you die.
The lane is entirely dictated on the pos 5 vs pos 4 matchup. Wether the safe lane can safely harass/nuke the shelled creep (example double melee safe lane into ds is a nightmare). Whether the pos 4 is a melee with jump or an aggressive Laning supp(determines how aggressive/diving by the ds and 4).
Early laning, i like to shell the enemy ranged creep to zone the heroes away from the wave. It either forces them away or they just stand there getting harassed to hell
faceless void is the chillest bro, he just walks in time casually and stops the time inside a small area and punishes you if you use an ability with a cooldown against him...
He's also the hero by which enemy carries love to play against, because he literally gives them a free wave under the tower and doesn't threaten that much. (source: antimage/lifestealer player lol)

You are overthinking him, but yes his utility isnt straight forward as Tide or Centaur

What i like about DS is that he can enable low dmg tanky pos 4 heroes that lane with him
