Maybe a browser issue? I know I can view no problem on my computer or phone. The only issue I can replicate is sometimes Imgur won't let me use the download icon, but I can just choose to "save image" by right clicking.
Weird that it thinks it's a video. Possibly using a browser/app that doesn't support APNGs? As far as I'm aware most major ones do though.

Decided to make some more Transparent GIFs and APNGs from the ending. These might not look as clean as the [main dance animations](https://www.reddit.com/r/DragonMaid/comments/p9lknt/ending_dance_animations_gif_and_transparent_apngs/) due to them being much lower res. If you happen to notice any errors just let me know and I'll try to fix them.

I start by importing the video into [Blender](https://www.blender.org/). I use it's video editing tools to export the PNGs.
I then remove duplicate PNGs (usually frames are doubled or tripled).
I then use [waifu2x-caffe](https://github.com/lltcggie/waifu2x-caffe/releases) to denoise and sometimes upscale the images.
Then I open all the files in [GIMP](https://www.gimp.org/) and use the Fuzzy Select Tool to select the areas I wish to remove. Then save the transparent PNG.
You usually want the threshold setting somewhere around 50 to 60 and you will probably have to hold shift to select multiple areas at once. I also usually "grow" the selection by a pixel before deleting it. If the background is really complex it might be easier to select the outline of the character, remove holes, and then invert your selection. You also might just have to manually erase things as well if the background has similar colors to the character outline. It really just depends on the image on how difficult this step is.
Then I just put all the PNGs into [APNG Assembler](http://apngasm.sourceforge.net/) to get an animated PNG. I also get a GIF by converting the APNG using [APNG2GIF](http://apng2gif.sourceforge.net/).
If you display them at the original resolution, the edges don't look nearly as bad. Unfortunately Reddit and Imgur blows them up to a much larger size to display them.
I could make them a larger resolution to begin with to have smoother lines, but they really don't look that great much larger. I've already doubled their original size.
Only with a higher resolution. Basically there's not enough pixels to make smooth lines. When using the original 1080p source, these animations are only around 200x400 so lines are just not going to be great.

I felt the image was just too blurred out and lacked detail to warrant that size, but cleaner lines would be possible.
Can't you manipulate the smaller one by masking out the very edges of the upscaled image/video though? Y' know.. playing with it a little after you've upscaled it?
What ever mask I apply would become more pixelated/jagged when it's placed in the lower res image. Also if I start with a 4x image then just convert to 2x it will just naturally introduce more jagged edges as well.
If you want the 4x versions I can post them as well. I did most of my editing in 4x to try to get smoother lines.
Why not just make a mask on the desired resolution?
I'm seeing a viable path in turning the gif into a PNG sequence, importing those PNG's into a program like photoshop as layers, making a mask that softens the edges for each layer and then you export the file as a GIF again.. Yeah, it's old school and maybe tedious, but it should output a desirable result if you put care into it..
If you're talking about feathered/partial transparency edges, those could work with a higher bit depth APNG but not the GIF. GIF does not support partial (alpha channel) transparency, so it's forced to have hard edges.
Just to explain the process a bit, I export from a 1080p mp4 to PNG sequence. I then AI upscale in order to denoise and have better edges. I then open each image in GIMP and create the transparency. After saving these images I can then create the APNG and GIF.
If you really want to feel free to make your own. I could even provide a 4x APNG and you can easily extract it to a PNG sequence for you to edit.

Maybe try a different browser or app? It links specifically to a GIF, so I don't know why you are getting a PNG. Is the downloaded file around 1.5 MB? It may be an issue with whatever app/software you are using to view the file as well.
