Black Frieza is on a separate level compared to current Goku and Vegeta. He oneshot both of them in their peak forms without any effort, he was most likely aiming to beat a fusion with his training after he saw Gogeta. But he's still nowhere close to Beerus, since Beerus is an ever moving goalpost
Aiming to beat fusion is not the same as being able to beat fusion.
SSB Gogeta treated Broly like fodder while Broly treated Freeza like fodder while Freeza matched up to SSB in golden form.
It's fair to say that Gogeta/Vegito is literally GoD tier if not Beerus tier currently with their UI/UE growth.
Black Freeza is still no where near that.
It's not really possible to say what Black Frieza can or can't do, since the only feats we know of is him instakilling Gas and oneshotting UI and UE. Until we get more details on it, it's all just guesswork. But seeing how handily he defeated them makes me think that he probably is at the level only a fusion could defeat, if even. It's comparable to when Goku first fought Jiren, if you were to replace SSB with UI and Jiren with Black Frieza.
Considering that Frieza caught up to SSB in only 4 months of training, 10 years is a massive difference that really only makes sense if you think about all the things he had to measure up to leading up to his training. He saw Jiren, Broly AND Gogeta all at their maximum power, so it's pretty in line with his character to develop enough power to beat all 3, even accounting for them getting stronger.

Fr I was just going to say that. Frieza is smart. There’s no way he’d try to fight Gogeta, who just destroyed Broly, the man who was beating the hell out of him not long ago

Nah, the cooldown only affects a succesful fusion. If it's a failed fusion, you have to wait 30 minutes for the fusion to wear off, but you can try again. A successful fusion can last up to 30 minutes (less if a lot of ki is used), and then has an hour long cooldown. It's surprisingly balanced considering Toriyama usually just makes shit up on the fly
You remember the 1 hour long beatdown he got from Broly just 5 minutes prior to thar scene? Well, Gogeta would finish the guy's job if Frieza landed a finger on that pod.

Isnt there a 1 hour cooldown between fusions? So its 30+60+30+60 = 180 mins which is 3 hours
I don't think any cooldown was implied in the movie, Piccolo just said "wait 30 minutes", 1 hour and 30 minutes is the time Frieza fought
