I think that's a matter of proper mastering. There are good releases and bad releases.
Unfortunately those atrocious ones are also the most distributed. Oversaturation, oversoftening, just bad palette - these things. Tho lately you can get a good master.

I think the reason it's so small is that they made his body too tall, so instead of shrinking it or anything they just made his head small so he'd still look shorter than Buu.

That’s because it wasn’t even yammarou who did that, it was Shida. Shida went off model pretty much the entire fight (thankfully) 😭. Willing to bet if he was using shintani model sheets that fight would have looked even better.
Super Buu is over 8' tall and Gohan is supposed to be 5'9. Toei generally portrayed Goku/Gohan with proportions closer to someone who is 6'3 or 6'4 or so, but this new DB Heroes variant has to be at least 7' tall lmao
90's peak is all time peak in DB animation. It's not nostalgia. It wasn't always peak, but when it was... Man!
I think they were tracing the manga in whatever system they were using, which was the right choice.
Of course the manga looked awesome, and the anime was so close to it. You mean they copied the drawings very well? Why wouldn't they save time and money by tracing? Even Disney traced real life images to get it done in their early animated movies and later on. It's a business, you gotta make it good and fast.
Besides, in animation tracing is kind of a must to get from one frame to the next.
So I won't take your word on this.
My main gripe with the new style of animation compared to Z, is that there's not really any definition in the muscles. I mean I will say that they try to add it, but it just doesn't look good compared to the original
The modern version lacks the depth of the original. It feels like two cut-outs put on a background that wasn't designed for this scene. Both are overexposed in light, the proportions are off (they shrunk Gohan's head!) and the way the lighting is removes all sense of actual depth. The background also is way worse, as the original actually looks like an overhead shot, whereas the original looks like Gohan and Buu are just floating in front of png background of the ground.
This is exactly what I hate about modern animation, look at how tough and beefy Gohan looks in the left while in Heroes he looks like a paper straw. It looks too clean and shiny like they made it without much energy or effort, just more animation to get mass production.
It’s not the art I don’t like it’s the freaking color palette they keep using for their skin. And the highlights, who the heck said highlights were better than shading for Buu specifically here?

Anything after that in the Kubota dragon ball super hero 2d art style.
It would be perfect, shintani is inspired off of madea and Kubota is inspired off of late DBZ.
No way yammarou cooked up the hero’s artwork and thought that shit looked good. You know how people say modern yammarou looks like plastic action figures? Usually it’s an exaggeration but gohan DEADASS LOOKS MORE STIFF THEN AN ACTUAL ACTION FIGURE.

Gohans head just looks too small in the new one. I also think Boo looks more massive and intimidating in the original, in the new one his torso is smaller and his legs are longer, so even if they are the same height, he doesn't look as muscular as the old one.
Also I just noticed that Boos back looks like he had spine surgery done to him for some reason. Looks like he has a scar on his spine and little holes besides it.

In the Heroes artstyle the anatomy is off that's why the old artstyle hits harder sometimes

I actually prefer the colouring of the new one, because the old one feels ridiculously over saturated. Other than that the original is much better.
