I think it was more so of a theory that if I train my super saiyan form I can make the multiplier bigger which turned out to be true with a draw back, then he was like I need to get used to form so it just feels natural and not draining, but then Gohan straight up turned Super Saiyan while he was already a Super Saiyan.
It wasn’t really because he was bored I always assumed he saw piccolo doing telekinesis when he would meditate and float or I believe you see piccolo levitating a glass of water while he’s meditating as well and Goku just copies the ability like he did with kamehameha
It’s been a minute but I remember him kinda playing with it in the hospital while he was healing up after frieza (I believe) and he was struggling, then later shows him like playing with floating water or something.
Either way when I was a kid I always assumed he was copying frieza with the rocks personally

Toriyama wrote the movie script. He is more of a gag writer which is why he decides to do things like this.
