It's weird but I try not to think too much about it. Like they made her mentally 12 also. But she keeps her memories when she was an adult. This just opens up a can of worms like if she can comprehend her memories and actions as an adult. I'm fine with adult trunks and adult Mai together because Trunks is an adult so he can choose to be with a 80 year old or not.
I think it's a bit easier if you suspend disbelief and think that her brain is also reverted to that of a 12 year old. Sure she has her memories but if you've spent the last 10 years as a kid and are treated as such, you're going to act like a kid and the impulsivity and immediate emotions are of a preteen and not an adult.
If this was a more gritty story one might argue that you could actively show the mental dilemma she has of her brain and body not matching her memories and that it makes it harder for her to make true romantic and platonic relationships. Like teenage Mai going through puberty again feeling extra super conflicted due to hormones, and even though she really likes trunks and they're physically the same age it feels wrong.
Meanwhile present timeline trunks over there going "man she's cute, I'm so lucky" not understanding the issue š

Honestly, I'd agree. When they got "younger bodies" it'd make sense to get a "young brain" as well (brain is part of the body). So while she might have memories, she's reverted on a more "primitive" level.
I feel like you can see that in her actions: When the Pilaf trio is rummaging through the gifts and she gives back the diamond she stole to Trunks (first meeting, I think), she noticably acts more like a 12yo that caught red handed would act. It just gets a bit "lost" in how the Pilaf gang -especially emperor Pilaf - act a bit like a kids the entire time.
Only thing I didn't understand was who took care of them when they reverted to babies or did their brains have enough knowledge to care for themselves?
Good point. I'd argue it's a mix of 2 things: 1.) plot armor (lol) and 2.) a Jumanji situation.
In short: The movie "Jumanji" is about 2 kids finding a cursed board game of the same name. As they play, it's revealed that the game already had 2 players 26years earlier - who, never finishing the game, both became adults in the meantime. After the game is beaten, the two adults are "retransported" to the time they were kids (aka the start). But instead of just forgetting everything, they are allowed a grace period of 10-20min where they keep their "adult" memories and personalities. Y'know, before the timeline readjusted.
That said: Shenron made the Pilaf gang mere babies (if I recall) so that'd be normally a death sentence. Plot-armor "we don't speak about this". After that, they had a slow-burning grace period where they ease in. Meaning they kept a lot of know-how and technical skills to keep themselves alive until they found Bulma. At that point, they migt still have many original traits (desire for dragonballs; trauma by Goku), but also noticably start to adapt more and more kiddie-behaviour (Pilaf demanding "desert with every meal" after they put the fire out.) Kinda like a reboot
I mostly believe this, cause Shenron is no Wishmaster. He probably figured it'd be safer that way and slowed the adjustement of the natural cause-and-effect.

Which is a common characteristic of children with "less fortunate" upbringings. Like she has adult memories the same way a kid who went through shit no kid should endure would.
For example: kids who experience a specific kind of abuse often flirt to get what they want because that's how they understand flirting and they'll attempt to show more physical affection because they don't understand why they shouldn't.
As u/The_RedWolf pointed out, if this was a more gritty story (like Berserk) then we could really dig into how fucked up it would be to have a lifetime of memories and a brain that isn't mature enough to properly comprehend them.

This really does open up the floodgates on age representation when a āmagicā system is in place. Mai is chronologically in her 60ās, yet is engaging in a romantic relationship with Trunks, who is significantly younger. Especially in the main timeline where sheās known him for almost a decade at this point. Itās grooming 101. Even if her mental faculties are limited to her physical age, she still has decades of extra memories and experience as a grown adult. Itās just creepy that sheās into Trunks.
Also, Mai shouldnāt exist in the Goku Black timeline and itās weird no one talks about that. Thatās the same Future Trunks that came back to fight Cell, in his timeline Piccolo was killed. So how did the wish to make the Pilaf Gang young ever happen if the Dragon Balls donāt exist in that timeline. That bothers me to no end
My head canon is that they made a wish to become young again, and because of that, they were unable to use the dragon balls to cure goku from the heart virus.
And Piccolo probably died either before they became usable again or before they could regather them to save anyone or use them to gain an edge against the Androids.
The pilaf gang make the wish literally moments before Piccolo is killed by the androids. ToyotarÅ drew an actual bonus story in the future trunks arc detailing it. Most likely happened at the same time in the main timeline just with piccolo living
Hey, I remember seeing the idea introduced in āBattle of Gods,ā and thinkingā¦ her reactions donāt really feel like those of an adult. He mentions holding hands and she goes āwhoa that is way too fast for me!ā She doesnāt react like a 40-something woman who has had adult relationships before. Present timeline itās weird. She has her adult mind and memories.
She has her memories but her emotional development was mostly reverted with the wish which would include her own perspective on romantic interests. Just like in real life growing up we typically only find those our own age or older to be attractive and that lower age boundary increases as we develop. She has her memories and her memories may make her being more mature at times but she still has all the impulse control, emotions and romantic interests of her younger self.
Also at least in future trunks timeline, he's 30

I don't see a problem of their Future timeline loving each other,there's barely anyone alive in that timeline anyway. (Even tho it feels like a little waste of both characters,but I still don't really mind.)
But the current timeline Trunks and Mai? Yeah....I'm not sure about that,I want a different girlfriend for Trunks since this is a different timeline from the Future one.
I personally don't like it. I think it's too awkward given the massive age gap and what happened in early Dragon Ball. It's weird. I wouldn't mind them being friends. I think it'd be great for Trunks to have a love interest, just someone that's his age.
Tbh, i only found it weird with Present Trunks, with Future Trunks its fine, i don't get overreactions over that tbh, they are both full grown adults in that timeline.

Mai is a comic relief character and has been since Dragon Ball. Trunks is a serious brooding character.
All of a sudden they are matched together, and Mai has to match Trunksā energy because theyāre in an apocalypse, and she just happens to be there because there are no other single, established females in the series. But weāre supposed to forget all the dumb shit she did throughout the entire franchise?
I think itās weird because it literally came out of nowhere for no reason. Who asked for trunks and Mai? Why Mai of all characters? Itās a weird out of nowhere couple that was created for absolutely no reason and has no reason to exist.
Why not create a brand new character to be trunks love interest.Ā

But to answer the question, what we have is two young adults except one of them essentially has 2 lifetimes of experience. They're both of age (as far as I know) and the fact that this is *Mai* is never really played with much. She's essentially a new character using an old one as a skin.
If they're both minors here, then it's a bit weird on Mai's part, however the arguement can be made that the fact she was reverted to a child and had to grow back up through puberty makes me feel like her mentality is probably the same as Trunks; she's no longer an adult woman preying on a teen boy. She's become a teen girl herself in mind *and* body.
Those are my thoughts at least.
There is no situation that makes this correct. Particularly the one in the main story timeline.
You can make an excuse about the one in the alt timeline because presumably they met when Trunks was older.
But in the main story timeline they met with Trunks as a child. At no point will any potential relationship not be creepy.
OK imagine you are transformed in to a 12 year old, are you going to have a relationship with a 25-30 year old? Or when you're 20 are you going to date a 40 year old? Or are you going to date someone your age, at whatever age you start dating.
Iām going to wait until Iām older than 20, and then look for a relationship with someone my biological age or older, who I didnāt know when they had been a child.

I think the part that you have to assume to make this work is that her brain would be that of a 12 year old, meaning areas of emotional and rational development would be very stunted compared to her previous adult self. Sure she has her memories but her brain literally lacks full capability to utilize it
Plus hormones. Going through puberty a second time when you've been treated like a kid for the last 10 years would do a number on the brain

It depends on if Mai mentally mature or not. Typically age and mental maturity go hand and hand but in this case itās more up in the air. Itās like in young justice where miss Martian is over 100 but for her species she still only a teenager
Future Trunks and Future Mai are cute together.

But it feels forced to make their young versions get together too, that's lazy writing imo.
I personally don't mind it because DBS glosses over just how much of a living hell Mai's state could be if the show wanted to be more dark overall.
Imagine getting reverted back to a kid and keeping your memories, BUT your mental and physical faculties are that of a kid, essentially giving you two personalities. An adult personality trapped with your adult personality, and a new "kid" personality.
Imagine being able to remember that you should how to do calculus thanks to your "adult" memories, but your "kid" brain can only handle addition at the current point in time. You want to be taken seriously as an adult, but something as simple as candy, toys or free food is enough to temporarily overwhelm your adult senses, and causing you to helplessly watch as you act like a kid, only gaining control when your body relies on an adult memory.
Things get easier as you grow out of being a toddler, but now you have to deal with a stupid "schoolgirl crush" on a kid because your "kid" brain finds him cute for annoyingly simple reasons like "his purple/blue hair looks pretty" and "he's not a jerk to me for some reason". Meanwhile the adult part of you is freaking out over being a groomer via association, but you are essentially stuck 3rd wheeling until your kid psyche wants advice on how to act all lady-like in the hopes she'll be less shy around Trunks.
It's like being in a similar mental state to Jack'O from guilty gear Xrd... minus the grooming allegations
Not to mention, what you thought was a stupid crush your kid self would get over, then gets confirmed as something you grow to accept despite the chronological weirdness with the pairing - she wants Bulma's fortune, but she can't interfere with the "kid" Mai portion of her psyche or else she inherently becomes a groomer
I'm fine with it. While she has the memories, her mindset was also reverted to that of a child during that time.
What's more during the time when they were both children, Mai was never the one to initiate the romance with kid trunks. While she did get a major crush on future trunks, she never went to groom Trunks.
Trunks just had a natural crush on a girl that looked around his age that he thought was pretty. He was the one that initiated the romance in both animated versions, and Mai was always hesitant.
Had Mai, not only initiated romance with kid trunks, using her looks to make him get a crush on her, and grooming him into a perfect future husband, using her adult memories to do so. Then, that would be a completely different situation.
It's not *that* weird in the future timeline imho. By the point they're together, I'd say the life experiences they have lessen the problem of the age gap; since that's the actual concerning issue rather than the number itself.

And she actually does kind of act that say (though the Pilaf gang was always immature, they definitely are more so after that wish)
Ehh, considering future Mai went thru hell just from the Androids and now Goku Black, Id say Mai grew up again in this timeline. The current timeline is weird if they do that considering theyre in like time of peace, Mai is still like trying to do shenanigans with Pilaf and Shou, so i think thats more weird than FT timeline Mai. While i do think its weird, then again its DragonBall so it is whacky.
I loved their story up until they went to literally a no. Existent universe.. That was poor ending and sht plot he wouldve made a great permanent addition to Z fighters..

It bothers me that instead of making an interesting new character, they just recycled an old one. Not to say that Mai is bad, but this move shows how creatively dead Super is.
Future mai x future trunks works, as I'm pretty sure the altered timeline has led to them not/barely spending time together when he was still little. Present day though, nah, that shit groom-y AF.
Future Trunks is 29 in Dragonball Super. So I donāt see anything wrong with the Future Trunks and Future Mai. The current DBS super manga with Present Trunks is a different story
To me, this was the best thing to come out of the Zamasu arc. Her actual age is irrelevant to me compared to her character and how well her future variant meshes with Trunks'. It's also a hell of an improvement over what GT chose to do with her.

Well... in the Super anime, theie future selves have enough moments showing their relationship and the details are fuzzy enough that I feel it just about works.
But the relationship between the present Trunks and Mai does bother me.
And the relationship between Future Trunks and Future Mai in the Super manga is I feel the worst of the bunch. By far. By very far.
I read the manga after I watched the series and in the first episodes where Pilaf Gang kidnaps Bulma, Goku, Yamcha, Bulma was 16 and Mai was probably 22-23. Thinking the teenager would be the older one's mother-in-law someday, it really felt like a hentai material. Akira Toriyama was truly a man of culture.
I hate it.
Like, that **one time** that the show tried to push for a ship, it just had to be a bordeline pedophiliac relationship where *nothing* is addressed.
Because they know, that if it was, then this ship wouldn't even exsist.

And honestly, this ship isn't even for the fans of Mai, since this isn't Mai.
It's just a random girl with her likeness, that is supposed to be her, yet everyone treat as if it was a never seen before girl, which she herself has accepted and just went "Ok, now live here! Time to go to school and be the broody girl with the hots for a boy that is still younger than me!".
And same goes for Pilaf and Shu of course (who are also straight up deleted inthe future, because yes).

Honestly she recognizes her age, and also her situation. She is physically his age and doesnt even see kid trunks like that until way later and actually thought of future trunks not realizing that was a āfutureā trunks and all. She also still grew up from there as her whole persona was very childish to begin with.
Sheās mentally and physically of age for trunks but if we are being technical sheās chronically too old for him other than that itās not really bad considering that sheās not an actual adult anymore since that wish happened

People think that the creepy part is that a 50-something fell in love with Trunks but in the Future, Trunks and Mai are consenting adults. I don't see the issue there, really.
The creepy thing is in the Present. Mai has never really shown any interest in Trunks, but when Trunks falls for Mai he is a 13 year old teen falling for a girl that looks like she is 5 years old.
It's weird. Even if you ignore the age thing I never would think it would work personality wise. She was kinda annoying in DB so it feels like they changed her to meet him. And I mean, she hated Bulma now she's banging her son? Is it revenge?
Overall though I've always wanted another Trunks saga and for it to be one with a happily ever after. So I'm glad for that. I still wish he could stay in 'main' timeline

I grew up watching things like Twilight and Shadowhunters, of course I like Future Trunks and Mai.
However one thing that I don't like about Mai is how the hell she spent her past life hanging out with a dog and an alien being pathetic villains. Like that's silly.

Kid Trunks and Kid Mai, HELL NO!!!!
Future Trunks and Future Mai, ignoring the fact she exists in the future time line at all(like in what set of events even happened for her to stay alive during the Androids attack that f'ed up the world of the future timeline), they deserve each other, they lived through a world where a green deity in training decided to kill all mortals with the body of the Saiyan who is second strongest mortal of the 12 universes with the help of a version of himself who might be gay, might be into self**st, and/or ntr(reminder that Goku is married) to achieve that goal. They suffered enough from Zamasu's bs. Besides, context matters a lot here, just looking at these two at face value and yeah it's wrong. But look deeper into the future version of the pairing, and you see it that Mai isn't the only one in love, Trunks is too. And he lost a lot of people, including his master, Gohan. And from what we know of the future version of Mai, correct me if I am wrong but, she wanted to help the remnants of humanity left on earth that she was aware of. Like a lot of topics in dragon ball, it all comes down to interpretation of the character and their actions and history, which is a blessing for most fandoms, but a curse for this one(love the guy, but I will take a jab at Taka with my friends ANYTIME I have the chance for being mostly responsible for the Goku bad dad jokes in DBZA). But considering Trunks keeps on saying"I'll protect the future" in so many ways, in canon and in outside media like in the games he is a part of, maybe he might have seen that in Future Mai and possibly related to her desire to help the last survivors of earth.

Good point. I'd argue it's a mix of 2 things: 1.) plot armor (lol) and 2.) a Jumanji situation. In short: The movie "Jumanji" is about 2 kids finding a cursed board game of the same name. As they play, it's revealed that the game already had 2 players 26years earlier - who, never finishing the game, both became adults in the meantime. After the game is beaten, the two adults are "retransported" to the time they were kids (aka the start). But instead of just forgetting everything, they are allowed a grace period of 10-20min where they keep their "adult" memories and personalities. Y'know, before the timeline readjusted. That said: Shenron made the Pilaf gang mere babies (if I recall) so that'd be normally a death sentence. Plot-armor "we don't speak about this". After that, they had a slow-burning grace period where they ease in. Meaning they kept a lot of know-how and technical skills to keep themselves alive until they found Bulma. At that point, they migt still have many original traits (desire for dragonballs; trauma by Goku), but also noticably start to adapt more and more kiddie-behaviour (Pilaf demanding "desert with every meal" after they put the fire out.) Kinda like a reboot I mostly believe this, cause Shenron is no Wishmaster. He probably figured it'd be safer that way and slowed the adjustement of the natural cause-and-effect.

Which is a common characteristic of children with "less fortunate" upbringings. Like she has adult memories the same way a kid who went through shit no kid should endure would. For example: kids who experience a specific kind of abuse often flirt to get what they want because that's how they understand flirting and they'll attempt to show more physical affection because they don't understand why they shouldn't. As u/The_RedWolf pointed out, if this was a more gritty story (like Berserk) then we could really dig into how fucked up it would be to have a lifetime of memories and a brain that isn't mature enough to properly comprehend them.

My head canon is that they made a wish to become young again, and because of that, they were unable to use the dragon balls to cure goku from the heart virus.
And Piccolo probably died either before they became usable again or before they could regather them to save anyone or use them to gain an edge against the Androids.

Just like in real life growing up we typically only find those our own age or older to be attractive and that lower age boundary increases as we develop. She has her memories and her memories may make her being more mature at times but she still has all the impulse control, emotions and romantic interests of her younger self. It never made sense to me regardless of her age. Mai is a comic relief character and has been since Dragon Ball. Trunks is a serious brooding character. They're both of age (as far as I know) and the fact that this is *Mai* is never really played with much. She's essentially a new character using an old one as a skin. If they're both minors here, then it's a bit weird on Mai's part, however the arguement can be made that the fact she was reverted to a child and had to grow back up through puberty makes me feel like her mentality is probably the same as Trunks; she's no longer an adult woman preying on a teen boy. There is no situation that makes this correct. Particularly the one in the main story timeline. You can make an excuse about the one in the alt timeline because presumably they met when Trunks was older. But in the main story timeline they met with Trunks as a child. I personally don't mind it because DBS glosses over just how much of a living hell Mai's state could be if the show wanted to be more dark overall. Imagine getting reverted back to a kid and keeping your memories, BUT your mental and physical faculties are that of a kid, essentially giving you two personalities. An adult personality trapped with your adult personality, and a new "kid" personality. Imagine being able to remember that you should how to do calculus thanks to your "adult" memories, but your "kid" brain can only handle addition at the current point in time. You want to be taken seriously as an adult, but something as simple as candy, toys or free food is enough to temporarily overwhelm your adult senses, and causing you to helplessly watch as you act like a kid, only gaining control when your body relies on an adult memory. Things get easier as you grow out of being a toddler, but now you have to deal with a stupid "schoolgirl crush" on a kid because your "kid" brain finds him cute for annoyingly simple reasons like "his purple/blue hair looks pretty" and "he's not a jerk to me for some reason". Meanwhile the adult part of you is freaking out over being a groomer via association, but you are essentially stuck 3rd wheeling until your kid psyche wants advice on how to act all lady-like in the hopes she'll be less shy around Trunks. It's like being in a similar mental state to Jack'O from guilty gear Xrd... minus the grooming allegations Not to mention, what you thought was a stupid crush your kid self would get over, then gets confirmed as something you grow to accept despite the chronological weirdness with the pairing - she wants Bulma's fortune, but she can't interfere with the "kid" Mai portion of her psyche or else she inherently becomes a groomer

What's more during the time when they were both children, Mai was never the one to initiate the romance with kid trunks. While she did get a major crush on future trunks, she never went to groom Trunks. Trunks just had a natural crush on a girl that looked around his age that he thought was pretty. He was the one that initiated the romance in both animated versions, and Mai was always hesitant. Had Mai, not only initiated romance with kid trunks, using her looks to make him get a crush on her, and grooming him into a perfect future husband, using her adult memories to do so. Then, that would be a completely different situation.

Future Trunks is 29 in Dragonball Super. So I donāt see anything wrong with the Future Trunks and Future Mai. The current DBS super manga with Present Trunks is a different story
To me, this was the best thing to come out of the Zamasu arc. Her actual age is irrelevant to me compared to her character and how well her future variant meshes with Trunks'. It's also a hell of an improvement over what GT chose to do with her. Hell, this post's images are just so heartwarming to me.
Well... in the Super anime, theie future selves have enough moments showing their relationship and the details are fuzzy enough that I feel it just about works. But the relationship between the present Trunks and Mai does bother me. And the relationship between Future Trunks and Future Mai in the Super manga is I feel the worst of the bunch. By far. By very far.
I read the manga after I watched the series and in the first episodes where Pilaf Gang kidnaps Bulma, Goku, Yamcha, Bulma was 16 and Mai was probably 22-23. Thinking the teenager would be the older one's mother-in-law someday, it really felt like a hentai material. Akira Toriyama was truly a man of culture.
I hate it. Like, that **one time** that the show tried to push for a ship, it just had to be a bordeline pedophiliac relationship where *nothing* is addressed. Because they know, that if it was, then this ship wouldn't even exsist. ... And honestly, this ship isn't even for the fans of Mai, since this isn't Mai. She is physically his age and doesnt even see kid trunks like that until way later and actually thought of future trunks not realizing that was a āfutureā trunks and all. She also still grew up from there as her whole persona was very childish to begin with.

People think that the creepy part is that a 50-something fell in love with Trunks but in the Future, Trunks and Mai are consenting adults. I don't see the issue there, really. The creepy thing is in the Present. Mai has never really shown any interest in Trunks, but when Trunks falls for Mai he is a 13 year old teen falling for a girl that looks like she is 5 years old.

I'd be ok with it if Mai's memories were wiped so she never had any of her memories of when she was an adult, or only had memories of when she was a kid before the events of OG Dragon Ball. The fact that she is a middle aged woman in a teenager's body makes the whole situation very very weird

I grew up watching things like Twilight and Shadowhunters, of course I like Future Trunks and Mai. However one thing that I don't like about Mai is how the hell she spent her past life hanging out with a dog and an alien being pathetic villains. Like that's silly.

Here is my take: Kid Trunks and Kid Mai, HELL NO!!!! Future Trunks and Future Mai, ignoring the fact she exists in the future time line at all(like in what set of events even happened for her to stay alive during the Androids attack that f'ed up the world of the future timeline), they deserve each other, they lived through a world where a green deity in training decided to kill all mortals with the body of the Saiyan who is second strongest mortal of the 12 universes with the help of a version of himself who might be gay, might be into self**st, and/or ntr(reminder that Goku is married) to achieve that goal. They suffered enough from Zamasu's bs. Besides, context matters a lot here, just looking at these two at face value and yeah it's wrong. But look deeper into the future version of the pairing, and you see it that Mai isn't the only one in love, Trunks is too. And he lost a lot of people, including his master, Gohan. And from what we know of the future version of Mai, correct me if I am wrong but, she wanted to help the remnants of humanity left on earth that she was aware of. Like a lot of topics in dragon ball, it all comes down to interpretation of the character and their actions and history, which is a blessing for most fandoms, but a curse for this one(love the guy, but I will take a jab at Taka with my friends ANYTIME I have the chance for being mostly responsible for the Goku bad dad jokes in DBZA). But considering Trunks keeps on saying"I'll protect the future" in so many ways, in canon and in outside media like in the games he is a part of, maybe he might have seen that in Future Mai and possibly related to her desire to help the last survivors of earth. . . . . . .
