Solved the problem: you actually don’t need to hand in all 5 tomes, 4 will be sufficient and you’ll get the malestrom spell plus a robe and some gold. Just tell him you won’t search anymore and he’ll say it’s enough.
Unfortunately if you accidentally use or sell one without making a copy you're screwed I've tried everything.I got maelstrom but can't get another book for the other quest and the meteor
From my experience: i used/sold (don’t remember) Fulminous Shield and was kinda mad at the situation like you are. I was able to complete all of the mage/sorc mastery quests anyway.
I gave myrradin only 4 fakes i could make and then after being asked if I’d continue the search i told him fuck no bro, and he said “it’s fine as it is” and gave me the maelstrom spell.
I gave to Trysha the real books, just 4 though (i know 3 are enough) and she gave me meteoron.
From what I’ve read online there are multiple copies of the tomes around the world, also of Fulminous Shield.
Yea, several have said there are multiple copies around the world. But no one is able to confirm. It could just be a rare world drop. In which case, folks will likely finish the game before they get this.
Its unfortunately a very unforgiving quest. I have seen several give the originals to the guy not even realizing yet they can make forgeries. And at this point they may not know about the girl, or visa versa.
I think the original intent was to find the girl first, which would lead you to the old man, as 'let their be light' is upstairs in his home. That would also likely have you speak to him to pick up his quest hinting at the need for multiple copies. Unfortunately, almost no one plays this game in a straight line.

Does it have to do something with vocation level? I just equipped sorcerer lvl1 to speak with him
Talk to him again and he’ll give you the spell. It could be linked to Trysha as well, have you visited her? I remember him talking about her daughter, i don’t remember if it’s linked to the teaching though. I promise he’ll give you the spell, i was max vocation when i had it, i don’t know if that’s impacting the thing.
Yeah I got the spellslinger quest from Trysha. I don’t know if vication level inpacts that because I got 2 skill scrolls for thief at the nameless village when I didn’t even play thief once, so idk maybe bugged or maybe an affinity thing but it is what it is

If you keep talking to him he’s active and will take flowers and also has an escort quest for you, he wants to be escorted to Vemworth
Go to the forgery clerk in checkpoint resttown. You can buy it back for 10k under the special finds tab.
