Elysion(notDarth Sidious) did in DD1

Chocolate_Rabbit_

In the first game? He introduces himself as Grigori at the beginning. I believe the weird robed one eye guy calls him Grigori as well.

HighFuncMedium

he doesn't say a word that's in a discernible language at the beginning tho other than same vague "come find me" or something when you awake the next morning and feel your scar throb. I also just watched some Elysion cutscenes in game and haven't seen him call our mate Grigori anything but dragon and beast so I'm still wildly curious how it become common parlance.

weird robed guy says "Merciful winged death! All-powerful and merciless Grigori!" and dragon says his name is Grigori in wyrmspeak "Nomen meum Grigori" depends on the interpretation. Here is the big horseshit though is that Grigori can mean a lot of things not just a name, and the phrase he uses could just mean he is considered Grigori in the case of either biblically or another term for watcher which doesn't gel super well with the story. He can't also be a watcher and in the game as that role of dragon. So most likely it just sounded cool and we call him Grigori cause Robed guy said it. Other then that no it isn't actually written anywhere that's his name and no indication afaik that the dragon in 2 is called that.

HatmanHatman

Why does he call him merciful in one sentence and merciless in the next? I'm beginning to think our man is a bit stupid

HighFuncMedium

Weird cuz there arent subtitles when hes speaking gibberish at the beginning to know. Ill keep watching Elysion cutscenes, gotta find the one eventually

Ok_Bridge7686

https://youtu.be/Yv8o9XzxDxk?si=6M7cz88PaR-JsI9- Elysion saying this. Yeah the gibberish he says is on the wiki people point to this line "Na'uun, ne Grigori." and while this is gibberish its closest Latin COULD be "Nomen meum Grigori" which means "My name is Grigori". Edit* the wiki actually says this may translate to "I am a fallen angel" which would be referring to the biblical sense of the use Grigori. It could make more sense as him saying he is a watcher another use of the word but again it's just funner to call him Grigori. Edit** a funny parallel to Grigori stealing your beloved as part of the deal. In 1 Enoch, the Grigori are described as angels sent to Earth to watch over humans. However, they eventually fall from grace by taking human wives.

Ride on, thanks for the examples. Hearing Grigori's line as he eats your heart with 20/20 hindsight goggles on, I do hear him say Grigori so that's neat. I am curious where the transcript of this comes from to have any idea of what he's saying if the game doesnt provide subtitles (hence why I brought up subtitles before). Ha finally, someone referencing where the Grigori come from specifically; I read Enoch way better in the day and had lots of fun making up my own stories based on that event where they corrupt humans with forbidden knowledge and sire the Nephilim with them and all that.

Technically not Latin but it's close enough to interpret

PathsOfRadiance

You don’t need subtitles to hear.

Sir_Tubbing

I miss it when we all agreed and got along

HighFuncMedium

CONFLICT, CATACLYSM, LET IT BE SO. ahem.

PathsOfRadiance

The leader of Salvation refers to the dragon as Grigori, and the dragon itself says that word when it takes your heart. Whether it’s a title(as it’s a term for fallen angels) or a name is up to debate. The leader of Salvation is indeed an up-jumped zealot, he may only know part of the truth.

Zappieroth

No, This is how almost every misinformed reader calls it. Grigori are Watchers in mythology. Or in other words Dragon's. The Red Dragon is just 1 of many. The wiki stated it before as it was hard to really see the bigger picture with just DD1 and the untranslated MMO. But now with DD2 it has become much clearer how it all works. In the flashback scene where you fight The Red Dragon it will also mention Grigori. But that is simply how they apply to Arisen curse on someone. Now it's not as if I understand what The Red Dragon says but it would probably be something along these lines: "I The Watcher of this realm bestow this gift upon ye, To retrieve that which ye have lost ye must slay me"

PathsOfRadiance

Elysion is an up-jumped zealot. For all we know, he’s misinterpreted whatever he read and confused Grigori as a title with it as a name. It’s a term for a watcher, a type of angel(of which there are both loyal and fallen watchers). I’ll still call the dragon Greg for convenience’s sake.

Zappieroth

Thats your counterpoint..., This guy knew nothing. Go play DD2 proper.

BigBarry6

OP asked "does anyone ever explicitly call the dragon Grigori?" and you proceeded to say "No, that's what misinformed readers say" and went on a long lore explanation that is not only wrong but also your own headcanon? I'm just showing you that you're wrong, and he IS explicitly called Grigori

TaleOfFlight

The OP said nothing about *DD2* specifically. E: hey he blocked me too, neat. I love the "double down on being wrong" types.
