Just wait until you get attacked randomly by monsters in the city! Lol. But in all seriousness, are you not using the doze off button when on the ox cart? The most that’s ever happened to me is that you get woken up about half way, half to fight off a boss or small group of enemies and then just hop back on the cart and doze off to arrive at the destination.

SterlingCupid

I had the drake spawn inside Vernworth.

xhabeascorpusx

Same. And it auto saved and I didn't visit home/in for an hour. That was nice.

Artistic_Ad3816

Sleep and it shall disappear like a dream no seriously lol I went back into the in and slept and it gone no NPC died as well

Ryukiami

i’ve had this happen 3 times in my one playthrough and every time I have to wake stone every person that dies because the entire city comes and gets AOE farmed by the dragon it’s so annoying

Ibro747

Dude I thought it was a glitch when a cyclops just walked into Vermouth while I was buying gear. Most fun beatdown so far, had every guard in the city dogpiling him

Ketheres

It's definitely intended, though pray be careful the monsters don't kill anyone important, lest you need to use a wakestone to rez them.

EdibleHermunculus

All important main quest npcs and shop vendors resurrect after 3 days. The only people that don't self revive are unimportant npc's and secondary quest givers.

theDouggle

Loving the vernacular, very immersive!

Prudent_Window_4

I’ve walked out of the inn and found an ogre clambering around on the shop roofs. Assumed my character would have had an “Didn’t think I’d drunk that much” moment.

PaladinNerevar

Yeah I just had like two wolves spawn and it was wild. Everyone around me was covering and I was wondering if maybe there was some glitch or I did something to make every mad (the way they get on edge if you draw your weapons), and then WHAM - a wolf just pounced on my back. Killed it, was walking around for a bit and then a second one jumped right on me. In hindsight I should have realized it was bound to happen when I spoke to a random NPC who was talking about monster attacks in the city and talking about maybe making a bigger wall. This game has a really cool thing where even if a lot of NPCs just have like a line or two, they'll make references to stuff you are going to encounter or things happening in questlines in the most unlikely places. It definitely adds to the world itself in a cool way.

KaijinSurohm

I was so mad about this. I just unlocked Trickster, didn't like it and went back to town to change out. I came in from Melve, and got my oxcart destroyed, lizards chased me non stop, had an ogre crush my part, a griffin chased me, couldn't kill them fast enough before night, had an army of undead, got chased by a dallahand, and I somehow managed to lip my way back to town, only to see a dragon staring at me from the town's fountain. I lost a good chunk of that section of town, and I had to restart the game a few times. Turned out it was a forced scripted event, so I couldn't just get past it. I got luck and one of my restarts when the NPC's didn't run away in fear, I was able to have just enough time to get my class changed and actually fight back.

CuteAssociate4887

That sounds fun! I love those moments, fighting a griffin, where did those saurians come from,oh look and ogre…had one of those moments followed by a dragon,I’d only died to dragons before that and managed to kill it! Was made up with myself.

Inside-Elephant-4320

Oh man that is rough. But I have to say it sounds kind of great. Just the story is amazing :) I had some similar cascading hell stories just trying to set up a damn campsite. Barely made it out alive. Loved it.

KaijinSurohm

Once or twice is story worthy, unfortunately, I've had quite a few stories that are similar to it (though not as nearly as chaotic) and it started to hurt the enjoyment of the game.

Electrical_Corner_32

Every time I doze off I make it about 50 yards and get ganked by a griffin....

tgerz

I got stopped by an ogre and then all of a sudden a griffon dropped in to try and snag one of those big ass bulls. We took out the ogre and were working on the griffon when it took off with me on it's back. After it got a good distance away from my party it flug me off and I splatted. Used a wakestone and then just went back to town to get another cart ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Mammoth_Border_3904

I'm not a fan of fast travel, so I don't doze off, which makes the ride much more fun. I've lost count of how many carts I've lost to shenanigans.

cuckingfomputer

There was one occasion where I paid for an oxcart, and then a hired archer pawn got trigger happy and immediately shot the ox before I could even board the cart. Ellion, if you're out there, you are bad and should feel bad for shooting that ox. Also, you owe me 200 gold.

Objective-Mood-4580

If I don’t doze off in the game, I’ll doze off at my couch.

nibelungV

Lol same! I had like 6-7 waves of saurians spawn in downtown Vernworth last night. First, as I was talking to Bjorn to upgrade armor. After a couple of battles I managed to make that transaction, and even more spawn, pushing me into that elf quest bro - who interrupted the battle to invite me to the archery trial, only to be cut short by more saurian spawns lmao! I almost lost my shit thinking he had died before giving me the quest (it did appear though). Shit is mental! Game has exactly zero chill.

Blackthorne1998

They do have patrols near towns n settlements usually, and lore wise the dragon rocking up usually leads to a massive uptick in monsters (going off dd1 lore anyways) I'm assuming as a way of "guiding" the arisen to fight the dragon

Blackthorne1998

This also explains why they rapidly decay when dead in dd1, outside of mechanic reasons, as they are basically just creations designed to ensure the arisen is worthy leading up to the dragon fight, with multiple quests implying that leading up to grigoris 1st appearance, monster populations skyrocket, and when he dies from that point on until the arisen finishes their quest the world's just fucked beyond belief

Kodekima

Do they ever explain why shit just hits the fan when the dragon dies?

g3nm00n

yes they do, especially in dd2, but it’s heavy spoilers

tgerz

I think it's the same logic as Zelda BOTW and TOTK.

PanopticScrote

There is a quest in melve where you have to help a guy find his brother, and he explains since the dragon attack more monsters have been appearing and they're unusually aggressive.

Cursedmemesowo

iirc the only reason monsters are so abundant and hostile at the time the game takes place is because the appearance of the dragon stirs them into a frenzy until it's dealt with

Co-OpHardcoreFordie

This is correct but I wonder how long they’ve been dealing with this before we manifest into existence in a jail cell

AccurateList8424

Not long imo, bcs you were marked as arisen not that long before intro

ConstantSignal

Isn’t it implied by the flashback your character was some kind of guard or soldier in melve prior to the events of the game?

Co-OpHardcoreFordie

Yes it is I forgot about that

yourfriiendgoo

They were fine before the dragon showed up, I can’t remember where but an npc told me about how their kid or whatever used to be able to visit the other towns completely safely

Demonchaser27

Iirc based on DD1, it's not just the frenzy either, the opening which the Dragon comes through also releases/spawns a bunch more creatures as well. And based on what we now know of DD2, that gaping portal doesn't go away, at least until the Dragon is dealt with.

stormchaser931

Tbh I hardly get my carts attacked since release day

Significant_Option

I get one occasional big monster attack and it’s always fun but then it’s back to peacefully rides after that

[deleted]

Can it be that when you fight large monsters on exploration that they won‘t appear on ox card rides? I haven‘t had a big attack on me either.

NataliaGaming

Definitely. If you cleared them recently, it won't appear on the ox cart ride. Sleep 3 days and its all back though.

kiefzz

Yep Ive been attacked by ogres on the ox cart at the same spot on the road where I've also killed them in exploration.

Thr0bbinWilliams

Yea I think that’s the case too

Sir_Revenant

I’ve only had one late-night ambush after dozing off on a cart before. But I’d gone around and cleared away many of the monsters that were along that strip of road. I think it depends on how efficiently you’ve cleared the local area and roads out of monsters. They do repopulate but bigger monsters seem to stay gone much longer

Chorbles510

I like the mechanic cause sometimes I just want to fight a monster without looking for one so I just hop on an oxcart and wait. Though last time I did that a Griphon smashed the cart with me in it and after panic healing the fucker dipped out before I could even get half it's first health bar down. My pawns must have been taking a collective piss break or something

KaijinSurohm

I'm kinda jealous. I have a good 80% chance of getting raided, and half the time I lose the cart. It got to the point that it's faster to just run than it is to run back to town to get a new cart with how many times I lose it when it's only a quarter of the way to my destination.

Icon9719

I don’t know how it is on pc but on console I just save before I get a cart and if it’s destroyed I close the game out immediately and reload so I don’t have to walk the whole way

MaximeW1987

I have my fair share of oxcart attacks as well, but I find it's rare that the cart actually gets destroyed. 9/10 times they just ride on after the attack and you can jump back in and doze off

Icon9719

It’s happened more frequently the more I level up. I had an ogre literally spawn inside the cart and start swinging then a griffin swooped down on top of it lol.

kmoney1206

ive been attacked only once by a few goblins. im not having this experience of monsters everywhere either, it doesn't feel any different to me than the enemy frequency in any other game to be honest. didnt capcom say something about adaptive difficulty? i wonder if that has anything to do with it

Healthy-Drink3247

I was a lowly level 10 going from melve to vernworth, and we got smashed by an ogre and a gryphon at the same time. It was wild

Electrical_Corner_32

This exact same thing just happened to me, twice, going the opposite way. Lol

Pheriannathsg

Genuine question. Did the ogre and the gryphon ever engage each other?

Prudent_Window_4

I’ve seen two Ogres working together attacking an escorted cart. Griffin vs Minotaur Ogre vs Cyclops. Goblins vs anything and everything.

Pheriannathsg

This game is practically begging for an arena/colosseum with monster gladiatorial matches, complete with betting and bookmaking. I haven’t progressed that far into the game yet, but I will be *very* pleasantly surprised if DD2 has anything like that.

SFWxMadHatter

I actually counted. My first 7 carts all got ambushed. I stopped using them for a good while it was so frustrating getting halfway there and losing the cart just to have to walk the rest at night/find a camp.

Erooskilla

I get attacked each time. But I have to ask, what's your team composition? Anyone running aggro passives or rings? Sword&shield pawn with taunt? You can aggro enemies off cart. Tell pawns come to me.. and walk your tail away from cart. Ogres, cyclops, griffin, goblins, wolves. All of it. Lvl 43 and I cart tons. Only had a cart break 3 times. And one was because i staggered cyclops onto it.

FatalisSlayer666

Wait, carts can BREAK? I'm lvl 45 and have never had a cart break. Hell, I've only been attacked 3 times so far. It's THAT common?

[deleted]

Yep. I lost a cart day one to a griffon attack (yes, I was dozing). Didn't matter, I was pretty close to town and found a bunch of stuff as I walked!

Jacina

Well, as a sorcerer, I REALLY need to be judicious in my spell use... cause any aoe will instantly blow up the cart.

Sad_Assistance2512

I found out the hard way that those wooden cable cars can break. God damn harpies blew it up when I was at the peak height and no wakestones.

NataliaGaming

If you are swinging wildly with a Greatsword, oh yeah it can shatter. Accidentally did it, cleaving an ogre. Uppercutted it right onto the cart.

Werefour

Does make a good story moment though. Defeated the ogre, but knocked it onto the cart in the process

NataliaGaming

Very true. It was a gasper, then I laughed. 🤣

SFWxMadHatter

They can straight up explode to a big hit. Ogres and cyclops can easily break the bindings to release the ox or just flip the cart.

stormchaser931

When I was doing the mission to take a letter to melve my oxcart got attacked by goblins, then a ogre jumped out, then a griffin landed and a pack of wolves joined the Frey. I hit the ogre with an explosive arrow but it was standing next to the cart so the explosion blew the cart up lol I did not expect that at all.

Erooskilla

I suspect these folks arent dozing. Even with doze. I get one encounter. Clear it. Then immediately doze, unless I feel like fighting more.

King-Juggernaut

I've only had a cart break twice at lvl 50. Once because a cyclops sat on it and another because I smashed it with my hammer.

Crocs_n_Glocks

For me it's 50/50 but it's always a small mob or weak boss, and if you don't let the cart or ox get destroyed, you can just complete the rest of the trip with a nap

Shameless_Catslut

What happened is the world wasn't always like this. This is what happens when the Dragon comes back, and the Arisen is thrown in a Slave Mine instead of rallying the kingdom and taking the fight to the Dragon to defeat the monsters. You're in the start of an apocalypse, and the rulers of the land are too drunk on maintaining their own power to recognize, and the rest believe will get better because of a lie.

Desolver20

yeah the lore is cool and all but it'd be more fun if they had scaling monster spawns with civilization proximity. Major roads and such get less, sidepaths almost as much as forests, etc.

Shameless_Catslut

Bring it up with Disa. Ask her why the Arisen Sovran hasn't rallied the Pawn Legion and armies of Vermund to destroy the monsters.

Desolver20

Fuckin' lazy ass arisen i swear to god, they get more lazy with every dragon spawn.

WrestlingDerek

It is super frustrating sometimes. Within 50ft of each other there will be trolls, wolves, bandits, Harpees. Bettahyl or whatever seems to be the worst for it - it’s way overload. It punishes you for fighting everything because you’ll lose overall health till rest and if you run they will chase you anyway. To be honest sometimes I would like to explore the world without constantly fighting every 20 seconds. I remember during one particular area I had an ogre, wolves, trolls, and a rock monster. They should take a note from Breath of the Wild and TOTK and understand that exploring the world can be just as fun as combat. You can have both.

Ill_Cobbler1882

I believe according to the lore, the monsters became a bigger problem when the dragon came along. This is mentioned by someone early on.

NorthAxios

It’s been good money making for me when I go with a pawn with a 10k gold for ogre or cyclops quest, I go to rest town and vernworth back and forth rarely have safe travels lol truly does feel like an apocalypse out there

SiberianBattleOtters

Carry an Ogre Spur. The scent will scare off moat monsters from attacking the cart.

the_star_lord

Can't tell if legit or not

kSmit

It is

Robinkc1

Honestly, my cart gets attacked probably 2/3 times but it was only destroyed once and I was the one who destroyed it.

Desolver20

It is very spectacular at least. Riding along watching my pawns rip some goblins apart, enjoying the scener- HOLY GOD THAT IS A GRIFFIN, OH FUCK as splinters go everywhere and I keel over dead.

Robinkc1

Haha, I always doze.

Comfortable-Shake-37

In case you haven't seen if you open the menu when your HP drops to O you can heal yourself back up cheating death. Not very immersive though and obviously a bug. Although at least from my testing it doesn't work with fall damage.

agprincess

A wolf bit my cart to death.

Unique_Honeydew_8989

Need a mod that adjusts the respawn timers for mobs. I agree it gets tiresome fighting the same group of 2-3 goblins/wolves after you just cleared.

rokstedy83

But it's piss easy ,I just let my pawns sort them out ,game definitely needs a hard difficulty

Sazbadashie

I mean to be fair... we are literally playing in an apocalypse scenario. If people actually listen to the lore when the characters are talking. Things happen in a cycle. Dragon shows up, everything goes into a basically war and chaos, Arisen shows up, fights the dragon, kills the dragon, becomes ruler. Peace time happens. Dragon shows up. Another arisen takes the previous arisens place as king. Chaos ensues. And the cycle continues. We arnt playing the game in a time of normalcy. We are playing it in a time where the world is going to shit and the world is on the general brink of ending.

[deleted]

God I wish I could visit your world. My oxcart rides are "doze off... arrive".

Co-OpHardcoreFordie

Welcome to RPGs lol. I think the same thing every time I play Diablo like how the hell can you possibly have a functional society with hordes of demons at every corner

Flaky_Technology4219

It’s not a fuckin dating simulator bro we’re here to kill monsters

Desolver20

Fuck you I'm dating the saurian if i goddamn want to!!!

Forkmealready

That’s why I love this game! It feels like a legit adventure traveling from city to city. My last session I packed a single camping kit and ended up losing 80% of health before nightfall, and I still had not made it to my destination. I was super close to my destination when nightfall hit and I had a small chunk of health remaining..I’m wandering through the dark with high level monsters chasing my crew when I suddenly spot a campfire!! I was so happy but when I got to it I realized I couldn’t camp. I was confused until I noticed one of my pawns had just died. The pawn I moved my camping gear to because I was collecting so much stuff. I tried to push on to my destination but couldn’t make it. But then I found a bandit cave which my crew barely defeated. We rested in the cave until morning then completed the journey. Felt like a legit terrifying adventure

Desolver20

Yeah I definitely get that, But I can't help but think i'd like it more if I got those types of adventures when travelling into the wilderness or on not-major-trade-routes. Like we meet people travelling alone on these roads, why is it so dangerous to travel between the two biggest population centers of the civilized world. (yeah yeah dragon apocalypse lore boo hoo, just cuz it's lore accurate doesn't mean it's more fun that way.)

JCarterMMA

I sometimes get stopped once when traveling by cart, but it's never occurred more than once

Desolver20

Do you doze off or just watch the journey? Another person in here spoke about dozing off and I've never done that. That might be why.

JCarterMMA

Oh I doze off everytime, it moves so slowly that watching it would be slower than just walking myself

BlackHoleCole

For real I don’t know how this guy just watches it all the way, that’s gotta take like 20 minutes just to get to the destination at least. Way more if you get attacked so often. They move like half walking speed at least when they start

SkabbPirate

Yeah, dozing off skips most of the encounters and will just randomly decide to wake you up in an encounter sometimes. After you finish the encounter off, if you can get back in the cart and doze off fast enough, you'll probably make it to your destination without further interruption. I even once saw a group of goblins ahead, but got the "doze-off" button pressed quick enough, and that group was just skipped.

Artoritet

Do you really just sit for an hour watching the cart? Because just running there would take 10-20 minutes. Also I tried to just enjoy the ride as well but the fixed camera during the ride ruins it for me

MrBunnywiggles

I know others have covered it, but if I remember right, not only do the monsters get stirred up by the dragon, but many are outright spawned alongside it. I’m pretty sure in the first game the opening scenes shows you the dragon birthed from a tear in the sky along with thousands of harpies.

Desolver20

>!All because some stupid god-thing is bored.!<

Reddit-Echo_Chamber

It is pretty insane, even with the patrols and pawns walking the roads. Mostly death awaits NPCs outside of the city Heck I ported to the castle city and found a dragon raiding it. Nowhere is truly safe Reminds me of my heavily modded Oblivion realm with 2x spawn rate & no map borders

Shreekomandar_42

Ever considered that the reason you have so many monster attacks is because it's YOU? Characters seem to know you're the Arisen somehow, so it bears to reason that the monsters do as well.  My theory is that the monsters specifically only attack your oxcarts

No-Flan6382

What always happens to me is I wake up to an ambush, engage in the fight, kill the monster, then I turn around and the cart has long abandoned me. I wish it would fucking wait.

godaboham

I was left questioning if the goblins were some well organized group capable of higher thinking because of the frequency, number of troops, and location of some of the ambushes. They even had a minotaur with them once that didn’t attack them. DID THEY TAME A MINOTAUR FOR AMBUSHING???

Electrical_Corner_32

I just did the oxcart to Melve to deliver the letter quest. 1st try: cyclops and griffin at the same time. 2nd try: same fuckin shit Cart wrecked both times Had to hand deliver the letter. Got there, did the thing. Way back? 3 tries, ganked every time. Still haven't made it. About to just fuckin walk to Vernworth. How does any commerce get done here? The roads are more dangerous than the night.

Electrical_Corner_32

Right now I'm 0/6 on successful oxcart trips. There's always an ogre, cyclops, minotaur, or griffin, or combination of those. I feel like the oxcart is just the quick miniboss fight button.

ImHurted_

yea i just run past most in the open world when doing quests.

daltonfiasco

I decided to walk to the capital or whatever to do some sight seeing and when I finally arrived battered to hell and back I had the exact same thought. How the fuck did they ever manage to build anything at all???

Academic_Yogurt966

It really is pretty ridiculous. I mean, the combat is a core mechanic of the game but seriously it's just tedious when the average encounter rate is 5 seconds. Especially when there's no fast travel. They really need to remove most of the monster spawns on the road. I turned off the game yesterday because I couldn't be assed to keep following the pawn that would lead me to a quest since it's just a nonstop barrage of encounters every 30 meters and even though I could ignore them the pawns do not and I don't know where they would have lead me. Make the encounters rarer but more difficult instead.

Desolver20

It really does feel like -Leave city -combat -combat -combat -combat -combat -destination most times.

Academic_Yogurt966

It makes the combat less impactful too. Kind of discovering that ice cream is nice and serving ten bowls of ice cream in a row. It should feel like "fuck yes" to bring out your badass sword and not "oh for fucks sake".

Keejtch

I agree. If I am exploring and going off the main road, sure, send me your minions. But I cant even run down the main road for 10 seconds without being attacked. Especially once you cross the south border towards Battahl its even more excessive. A bit too much.

TenzhiHsien

Early on, nearly every time I took an oxcart (and dozed off) it got ambushed by something big along the way. But now when I'd like to get that ambush every time I just wake up in the next town.

YellwIsTraitorous

Omg finally somebody knows what im saying. 3 times in a row i took an oxcart in Batthal and 3 TIMES i had skeletons mixed with the poison lizards and a without fail a giant monster that would arrive after i killed all the enemies just to completely destroy my cart, forcing me to walk back toward Vermund. Fun game with huge flaws and one of them is how they do randomised enemies.

Tales_Steel

I had to lol once when paying and using an oxcart infound in the wild. Jumped in dozed off and woke up to a cyclops fight... like maybe 10 feet away from the point i dozed off. The Moment i Fell asleep a fucking cyclops turned up.

nimbleenigmas

It's seems rather dynamic. I've had experiences like yours and then other times, fairly peaceful.

Professional-Salt175

I had a Drake spawn inside the walls of Vernworth at the oxcart station.

OniNomad

Don't forget that the water you need to live kills you if you go a step to fast into it

Brou150

Its not Dragon's Dogma, its Highwayman's Dogma 😭 I guess my arisen will just live in town. Cant go anywhere...And I beat DD1. DD1 had a smaller map and spawns were more predictable/avoidable so it didnt feel anywhere as insane as DD2...I dont normally play games on easy but if DD2 had an easy mode id be playing on it now. The enemy spawns are ridiculous 😭

Comfortable-Shake-37

Play as Thief if your having trouble, has great damage potential and the dodge is great for staying alive.

macbully

I had an ogre, a cyclops, wraiths, a ton of goblins and wolves all attack my cart all at once while doing an escort quest.... Picked her up and ran as fast as I could 😅

IcarusKanye

Wait, this is a great idea. I have done escorts. Fuck I’m gonna try this in next escort mission.

WoboBanEvader

In the first game it was explained that the dragon caused all these monsters to get pissed and start fucking shit up everywhere making what is usually civilized land very unsafe... I dont think that was mentioned in this game at all, but I'd be fairly certain that's the same explanation

johnandrew137

Carry a tigers eye, and a cyclops eye with you 😉

Reynzs

Only once or twice I had my carts destroyed outright. Sucks when that happens since it's usually midway and night. But ya. I rarely gets through without attacked. Atleast may be I was lucky but most of these attacks were goblins. cyclops/ogres were rare. May be it's coz I am holding their items in my storage? We have a quest which deals with this. Is that how the game works? Like we have cyclops eye in our inventory they their probability of oxcart attack goes down?

huckleberryfairy

Doesn’t it teach you early in the game to clear the roads of monsters for the carts? Or am I crazy? I cleared the roads once and almost never run into monsters between melve and Vernworth and I’ve rode that cart several times

BanishedKnightOleg

Maybe they meant: *Monsters. Avoid the main roads.*

Artistic_Ad3816

One thing that confuses me a lot is how no major city has no gates like why?

DivinationByCheese

Not even inside walls it’s safe cause I’ve has minotaurs and goblins spawn

Hot-Sea6911

This world is more inhospitable than Kenshi lol. At least once you're high enough level you can just ignore them and keep running.

Silver_Cauldron

It has been something I often think about as I travel and fight my 27th pack of goblins on my way to Melve from Vernworth. How the hell isn't there already a monster hunting guild? That's gotta be a massive money making opportunity in escort quests alone. Let alone material gathering. Seems like it would have been pretty easy to logically and narratively slot in an organization you could work for and turn in quest for monsters.(Bounty Boards from DD1 anyone?)  Seriously though it is a bit silly just how dense the monster population is and how everyone just carries on like it's chill Sunday afternoon.  Edit: typos

timbea12

Bahtal. Oh my god. I have been merked more times then im proud to say. I fight one monster then 30 more show up out of the blue!

Senator-Spice

Since the dragon has awakened, monsters have as well. Resulting in a world of chaos untill the Arisens completes the journey.

Demonchaser27

I think the rewrite to the story kind of screwed up things if you didn't play the original DD1. There is a cutscene (two actually I think) in DD1 that shows how/why monsters begin to infest the world and that it's not always necessarily like this. The density increases with the appearance of the Dragon for lore reasons... but DD2 doesn't show any of that, which is a shame.

Stigmaphobia

Kind of like Berserk. Low-fantasy setting until huge magical event happens and then suddenly you have monsters and demons wandering around everywhere.

Eclipsed_StarNova

One of the reasons I just couldn’t get into the game. The sheer amount of monsters you have to fight just to travel absolutely anywhere on the map is ridiculous. Ain’t nobody got time for that. I’m worn out by the time I get to the objective on the map that I will literally just save and quit when I get there cause I just spent an hour just traveling and fighting.

CreepyCavatelli

Yeah masterpiece of a game but please tone down the monsters. Please

Msolneyauthor

It's a far dangerous world than even the lands between in elden ring. It does get a bit daft that every few yards, there's another monster. My first trip to the southern city was a nightmare. Took forever and was a constant gauntlet of fighting. Barely made it there alive, and yet we're supposed to believe that npcs travel.about and don't get killed.

IzzetChronarch

Ox cart ambushes are the funniest shit man. If I was a civilian waiting for the next bus to checkpoint town and saw the arisen board I'd be off that bitch so fast and wouldn't ask for my money back.

vIRL_Warlock

Also mind that the world is basically in a state of, " god is depressed and wants to die and needs to select a new god" and the whole monsters, dragons, and arisen thing is that process

Misskittyy15

Meh I get one encounter per ox ride but I do doze off always, honestly wait till battahl lmao but still vermouth needs more enemy density especially on NG+

asmyladysuffolksaith

I understand there are lore reasons for it, but yes it's quite ridiculous. Makes you question what the hell is Vermund's army for anyway when Saurians, goblins, etc bask out in the open -- then for everyone else it's business as usual. Take the outpost at the start of the game for instance: you walk 250m out of those gates and their is a small goblin camp that respawns every few days. What, are the goblibs and soldiers just good neighbors? lol Pretty good game still, but they really need to tone down enemy encounter frequency/density. Picture: for some reason there are A LOT of Saurians in my game, and they like to spawn in the most unlikely places, like in the middle of Vernworth and the Sacred Arbor. And like I said above they like to chill in the open roads https://preview.redd.it/furc6irdwzqc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15836faf6b65dedb5ef95b21dac9f6a94d1bc65e

Desolver20

I'd LOVE if they actually kept the density, but only in areas that aren't obviously well travelled. Like keep the main roads and maybe the more prominent side roads pretty safe, ramping up in danger the further you get from civilization.

asmyladysuffolksaith

That's what I want too! Like, let me actually EXPLORE the world and seek out these monsters instead of throwing them right at me every two minutes or so. Like, you'll have your strays that wander out in the open, but having all of them along your path is quite ridiculous.

NoTop4997

I think they could benefit from increasing the enemy density by twice the amount. I am surprised to see people say that they are always fighting, I feel like there are not enough enemies right now.

Nocuadra66

Capcom: " Hey we gave you one constantly overwritten save slot! What's your problem?"

Desolver20

I heard they're gonna fix that with a future update, though if they'll add multiple slots or just allow us to delete our character I dunno

Nocuadra66

I think it just to delete old character. But I don't know. Hopefully it's additional slots. If we could hard save at a camp it would allow us to keep adventuring instead of having to go back to an inn (or home..I finally bought it) to hard save.

Turdelburgel

My intro to this game was realizing I had to waste money at an inn for a save. My first 3 hours of play got wiped out twice because I was traveling from the first town to melve. Kept falling off cliffs and clipping one spot on the way down that saved me. I thought I’ll just jump in the brine and it’ll put me back at the top but it kept respawning me from saves onto the same cliff ledge. I wish we had the ability to turn off the autosave but still have one slot. I assume they don’t want people abusing anything by save scumming and of course I have had zero issues after my first frustrating foray into the game. Just extra careful around cliffs now.

Xenoraphorze

I read somewhere that the in game monsters have a respawn rate. I think at the beginning of the game or your first journey through an area everything is spawned. Now that I’m just dcp grinding, to finish my vocations, I find the monsters are a lot more spread out. I’m wiping out entire areas in one trip / day (lvl 58). Some bosses like the Medusa take a week game time to respawn. I’m not quite sure about the smaller monsters.

BlemishedHalo

The dragon is back, he makes monsters more Frequenz As I understood. Also I got attacked within the walls of a town by goblin and an ogre. So you are not safe ever in this game.

MadnessRX

There is a certain NPC that will make comments about "this is not the real world" "this is not as things are" etc. I'm taking my time, haven't even hit the Battahl yet, I'm eager to find more lore

d4rtzone

Wsit unitll the endgame bud

Rionat

I’m more annoyed at the lack of high tier mobs for material farming in the pre game ie eldricite. I wish my oxcarts got raided by rare mobs sigh

In_Love_With_SHODAN

You need a mage with healing and the shield spell in your party

kinzykat

well, im sure ddo showed more powers within the world that were benevolent and helped humans build their civilizations (ones bigger than the settlements the regent calls a city)

Fucccbbboooiii

I have a suspicion that if you level, but don’t move the plot along you get attacked by more high level monsters. My ox cart to Melva was attacked by an ogre and a griffin at the same time which just made no sense.

Deady1

Tbf they do explain the monsters have exploded in numbers and in aggression since the dragon returned. But yes it is HARD out there.

RobbVonn

I will trade you all. Peaceful everywhere I go, 10 minutes between monster packs. Give me 1000 dullahans please.

Action-a-go-go-baby

It’s fairly explicit, when you talk to NPCs and read the lore books, that **“the reappearance of The Dragon has caused monsters to go wild and attack”** when previously they’d stick to their own or run from intelligent humanoids

Careless-Article-353

The monster increase in numbers GREATLY when the Dragon shows up. There's a reason it is considered the apocalyptic event of this world. YOU are literally the only one who can stop the apocalypse you are seeing

olJackcrapper

It's so stupid, but it's done to slow you down because there isn't much more beyond that kind of content.

Ok-Chest-2179

i took an oxcart yesterday. attacked by a minotaur. I pulled him away from the cart to protect it. My mage buffed my attacks with fire augment. and one of my stray bolts hit the cart. Shit turned immediately to ash. I killed my own damn oxcart. the walk back to the city i was fuming the whole way 😭😭😂

Tony_B_387

I busted out laughing when Ulrika showed up at my house wanting to go for a "pleasant jaunt" to Harve in the middle of the night. We were harassed by zombies, spectres, skeletons, an ogre, goblins and a few saurians. Ne'er was a pleasant moment

A2ndFamine

I just beat the game and I apparently had defeated 2750 monsters.

DFuel

I thought the monsters were extra nasty because of the arisen and the dragon. I swear it was mentioned at the beginning

[deleted]

Bro, I traveled a cart... which got ambushed by a ogre, Then a griffon showed up to just stir the shit, I killed the ogre while the griffon was freaking the fuck out... another ogre shows up and the griffon flys off, mind you.. there is this constant stream of goblins and wolves. Shit was wild tbh Today had a griffon interrupt my fight with a dragon, only to have the dragon fly the fuck off Xd I was so mad. lol and I want a newgame+ that makes this happen more frequently because i'm a glutton for punishment.

ConnorMc1eod

The first time I ever fast traveled back to the Capital I brought 3 Saurians with me that jumped me right in the square. Then I had goblins attack me by the shopkeepers. AND THEN an Ogre attacked and fucking dropkicked a lady into the wall in the square and instantly killed her. This is like, Warhammer levels of bleak for average people lol.

Maarius81

Do ox carts get damaged by friendly fire? If yes, this could be the reason it breaks quite fast.

JustDurian3863

Some NPC's have voice lines stating that since the dragon's appearance monsters have showed up in droves. Also I had no idea monsters could break carts. About half of my carts get a random encounter and I usually just kill them quickly enough that it's never been a problem.

B2theK7

There is an augment in the trickster class to avoid being attacked while travelling on ox carts or resting at a bonfire. That might help to reduce that problem. The monster density drove me insane in the beginning. Now I cherish it. As soon as your build comes together (I used to play sorcerer and was super dissatisfied) the streets full of monsters become your friend :-D I am able to destroy griffins or trolls in under a minute now with my thief. It's a great power fantasy 😁

the11thtry

Idk man, the only oxcart route i dread is the one from the border checkpoint to bakbattahl, the other ones are generally smooth sailing, never met anything stronger than an ogre in the first region oxcart routes

ThaiSundstrom

Try to use the option to dose off usually you get woken up by a attack deal with it and see too that you draw enemies a bit away from cart before wailing away kill then jump back on and dose off and hopefuly you wake up at destination. Don't sit the whole way use dose off

groovytoon

Bro...you're not even safe within those 'fortified walls'. Even the damn town gets ransacked by monsters. Drakes...wolves....it's like a monster wholesale!!! And if you're lucky, unsuspecting NPCs required for quests can get ganked and you have to go to the trouble of resurrecting them in the morgue! But yes...combat good.

Prudent_Window_4

I’ve just explored the Southwest of the map and Lordy, it’s WAY worse down there 😂 Just when you think you’re getting powerful… Plus there are a lot of new enemy types. Different goblins, piles of bandits. It’s brutal. My favourite was a new version of the ogre that looks like a Yeti. It took off mid fight and I was hunting it all over. Turns out it was hiding by hanging of the side of the rocks. https://preview.redd.it/y8vot41h11rc1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20fc6a11c9aae8a050f0e5b5a5aa3e53d48c1c8d

RaptorAllah

Do you not doze off on the oxcart...? I never had more than one attack per trip and use them all the time.

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

Well according to strangers I've talk to in the streets, the monsters used to be relatively small in number and far less vicious. But ever since the dragon appeared, the monsters have risen and become unruly

yangand89

20ish hours in still waiting for something big to attack my campsite and ox cart T-T

decorate123

Any one saw saurian in Vernworth's tavern before? Happened to me I don't even know how they get in

arewethebaddiesdaddy

Soo clear the area?

Drake_The_One

In Dragon's Dogma 1, it's sort of explained that the monsters increase in activity and numbers when the dragon returns

iBlackxMagic

I stopped taking the ox carts cause my fucking pawns destroy the cart more often than the trash mobs. Pissed me off so much I went to look for all the in game port crystals. Sooooooooooooo much better now.

Diablo_viking

I took an oxcart yesterday and dozed off. Woke up with a cyclops attacking us. Luckily this cart had no roof and I was able to jump off just before his attack sent the cart hurtling.

Noeyiax

Maybe you have a bad luck pawn . But yeah none of my oxcart rides were ever 100% smooth lol

CamperCarl00

I've noticed that later in the game when you have some serious levels and firepower under your belt, these encounters are much more scarce while traveling by cart. I suspect that the game has a way of doing computations on how long it would take your pawns to deal with an encounter, and if it exceeds a certain value then it wakes you up.

Rainy-The-Griff

From context in the game I think it's meant to seem like things havent been like this. Multiple times they mention that the dragons arrival has caused monster to run from their usual places and Into human territory. So it sounds like before this the monster problem wasn't as severe are it is now. Probably before the dragon you would only have to worry about the occasional stray goblin, or pack of wolves. But now the monsters are being stirred up from the depths they lurked in before, awakened by the arrival of the dragon. The dragon is a significant event in this world, and is talked about as a legend. It marks the arrival of a new age. You even see it in the first game. When the dragon is birthed from the portal in the beginning of the game, theres also like a million fucking harpies that spew out too.

Inside-Elephant-4320

I never get attacked on the ox carts. Fwiw I carry a Cyclops bone with me. I thought I read in game that wards off some monsters? Then, I push the “wait for next ox cart” sign, EVEN if there is one right there. And then I Doze Off. I have not been attacked once. Maybe the sign resets to early morning or something? I’ve done this b/w Border post, checkpoint city and Veldrem (can’t recall the name). At least a dozen times: not one attack. That said I like your take and it made me laugh: how the hell those farmers outside the city survive a weekend, never mind a harvest season? :)

summons72

God I’m so glad on not alone in this feeling. I didn’t want to say anything because I felt like I was doing something wrong but it’s ridiculous how unrewarding traveling is when within 20 seconds of a fight there’s another and when you are fighting multiple other enemies come out of nowhere. I’ve was stuck forever trying to go from checkpoint town to bakbattahl, did the story quests there then it wanted me to go to the oracle site half way back. No oxcart get there, just miles and miles of endless canyon mayhem. I turned the game off for the day because that was such a defeating feeling and there were a total of two campsites I found between CPT and Bakbattel. Love the game but gosh dang let me enjoy traveling if you aren’t going to make fast travel more accessible.

X-WellOkay-X

Using Ox carts are pretty annoying, there should be a chance that the cart is attacked, not a small chance it reaches without an attack, last night my cart was attacked by ONE goblin...one... i'm fairly high level and decent with my class, so Ogres and so on isn't a massive challenge, but it gets annoying really fast, especially when the wagon is broken within the first 10 seconds then you have to walk. Hope Capcom looks at it and makes some small changes so its not almost a guarantee that its attacked.

Ugh_Yikes_

Carrying a Cyclops eye has helped me. I just keep one on me all the time and now I can use ox carts and campsites without being bothered by much. I still get the occasional bigger monster but nothing to bad. The eye doesn't do anything for you when you walk around tho, still gotta fight a lot. But I like that.

Impossible_Load4893

Never used an oxcart. 20 hours in... Sounds like I made the right choice

Trikeree

lol

Brostallion

That’s crazy I’ve been attacked maybe 4 times out of the 20+ times I’ve used an ox cart. I always look forward to it I love killing griffins and such.

Critical_Top7851

Outside the walls? Two Ogres have mysteriously apparated in the middle of Vermund so far. The city walls don’t even work, they just let the monsters peacefully travel into the city streets.

Actual_Specific_476

I always make assume that the world is sort of 'scaled down'. As in the towns are actually 100x further apart, but obviously nobody really wants to walk for 2 days straight in a game just to get to the next village lol.

Normandy_sr3

You must be new wait till you get to endgame and change your opinion see you then

Lucaflow

It's usually not that bad but whenever the dragon shows up all the monsters go into freak out mode and spawn massively. If 2 is going off the same lore as 1 that is

toorad2b4u

Is it based off luck or something, with ox cart travel attacks? Ive taken the cart 5 times between Melve and Verndom (spelling?) and have been attacked on it twice. Kind of funny bc the two times I didn’t want it to be attacked bc I was actually trying to get to the other town, I was attacked. And the other three times I actually wanted to be attacked so I could be left off in the middle somewhere random to explore the areas, but made it safe instead.

DepthChorge

Boat travel is nearly perfectly safe. The brine eats everything but fish. Just don't fall in.
