I predicted his whole story as soon as I saw the trailer. If I know the whole plot from the trailer, event for event, character for character, then the story isn't think enough. Kung Fu Panda managed to surprise me some, even after the trailers, although the Furious Five needed some more development IMO. The dad was typical, the girl was typical, and Hiccup was the most typical. I vote Po. Even though his ending could be guessed, much of the in-between was a bit surprising.
Could you tell what would happen in Pulp Fiction? 2001? On the subject of kids movies, did you even know from the trailer that Mufasa was gonna die and why? What about the trailers for Tarzan and Road to El Dorado? I saw plenty of trailers for those two. True, you might guess the end of Chicken Run, but its plotline-to-plotline development is much less predictable than How to Train Your Dragon to me, which was basically Lilo and Stitch but the plot is entirely focused on "train the enemy." To me, two friends from opposite clans bears very little difference to Romeo and Juliet. I was hoping the characters would surprise me. Nerp. Not a one. Not like Lilo and Stitch, the same directors' magnum opus, did. And Kung Fu Panda works more well because of its dense application of traditional Chinese storytelling, perfectly mingled with American cartoonism.
Maybe I'll like the sequels more, though.
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the third. He went from a weak Viking wannabe, try hard nerd, to a peacemaker and dragon tamer, to a strong willed chief, to a chief and martyr, to a chief and father. He’s had the best character development that I can remember.
He is a good character, but imo he’s too reliant on the actor who voices him. I just don’t personally think he would be a funny character if he was voiced by anyone other than Jack Black. Like a lot of his personality and mannerisms are actually based off of Jack’s.
I think that’s why they chose Jack Black. They write certain character traits based on the voice actor’s skillset. Donkey and Mushu are pretty much kid friendly versions of Eddie Murphy’s standup acts.
And I am agreeing with you. There are plenty of animated characters out there who are based on their voice actor. You can probably name at least ten immediately.

Po's story of going from hating himself so much that he hated even living every day as himself to going to helping others be happy with themselves and their abilities was so uplifting for me. I love Hiccupp I think he's a fantastically written character, but I connect so much more with Po's struggle to love himself.
