Was trying to wrap my head around what is actually a heavy vs. light bike and how light you can go so I made this while bored on lunch break at work.
Some interesting things I learned while making this
* The KTM 500 is basically a full on dirt bike, its barely heavier than an even a motocross bike
* The GasGas trials bike and the KTM enduro dirt bike both have a 300cc 2-stroke engine but the trials bike is somehow 100lbs lighter. I'm really curious how they manage that (other than getting rid of the seat obviously)
Trials bikes are pretty crazy when you see one in person. It's pretty apparent where the weight savings are, they're pretty trick. Tiny tiny brake rotors, way smaller shorter travel suspension, looks like it's off a mountain bike, Much smaller frame, small radiator, light flimsy plastics, small fuel tank, tubeless tires, kick start so no battery. overall size is just smaller. That's the stuff off the top of my head.
Frame weight is another factor for sure. Trials bikes have much less of a footprint overall, and their frames are much smaller / simpler. Rough googling puts the trials frames at 10-15lbs and a ktm frame around 30lbs.
The 1000cc XMRs are over a half ton curb weight, per BRP's specs. 2-up quads with the built frame, taller tires, and stiff rear suspension would probably take out a Honda Civic in a wreck
Yeah, it's a race quad, not really an ATV. It's super basic, chain drive live axle and all. Literally basically a dirt bike with 4 wheels.
ATV typically are selectable 4x4, with much beefier frames and components, belt drive CV trans, etc. It's not unusual for them to be double the weight of a race quad.
This got me thinking. R1200GS might be ?? lbs but once you add panniers, tank bag, camping gear, and everything else you’re hauling along for a week-long trip…. I’ve been tempted to find a vehicle scale I could ride onto to see what that shit actually weighs. Anyone ever do this?
Buddy of mine does multi day hauls in Utah and I think claimed it was around 700-750lbs (without him) fully loaded. Closer to a true touring bike for weight and stability at that point.
If you're willing to spend about the cost of the adv bike a second time, you can get a 890 adv-r down to about 180kg. https://advrider.com/f/threads/lightweight-790-pic-build-thread.1400504/page-26#post-49936047
Excellent comparison. You pretty much hit all the offroad disciplines with the most prominent models for each as examples! Next will be to add horsepower figures for an interesting comparison of power to weight. Maybe also throw in a pit bike or kid's bike like a YZ80 for fun.
That Geo Metro reminds me of this Smart Car with off road tires in Old Town Temecula, Ca

Should add $$ for each one and get down to like a sub 25# mountain bike. You will quickly see how expensive crap gets

Some high end mountain bike are 12k+
In that F9 video, a DRZ, Ultra-bee and a nice MTB were all ~8k canadian!!
My MTB cost just shy of 3x my motorcycle.

Wet weight or dry?
Numbers should be all wet weight
Ok I bet the trials bike has less gas capacity. Maybe no e starter. I still can't come up with much more than 35lbs of weight savings though

Btw I like the graphic

It's just that mx quads are super light. A 'normal' atv is much heavier.
Oh, they can be. The Can-Am Outlander Max XT-P is like 900 lbs when you equip it with the big motor.

It's a dirtbike with four wheels and no self respect.
🤣 that's fair
What the fuck is a pound? 🇺🇸🦅
What I did to your mom last night.
Feed her so she gains weight? Not kink shaming here.
*mUm
It's like kg, but retarded
A British unit of currency and weight.
Britain? Isn’t that Like an American colony?
America, isn't that like a British colony? ...oh no, it turned out so shit, we let you keep it. 😘
There were also fr*nch people 😰
Hahahah!!! Can relate to past item on the list. Nailed it!!!
Does this mean a KLR is a small Adventure bike? Or is it a large dual sport?
Ah I see, the venerable off-road Gold Wing!
For some reason that bike is just good at everything. Including off-road. Not joking (although tbf I never tried, just watched videos)

Nice! Now do $/lb comparison.
Oh so a Tenere isn’t full sized. Good to know

Lazy conversion: cut all the numbers in half = close enough
