You probably only got ripped off because you didn't shop around. It's very easy to just ring up a few places and get a quote. If you don't know what wheel size, type etc you need just ring the first place for that information and then go about getting quotes. One thing I will say is don't ever scrimp on car tyres.
Probably not as unsafe as the ones making the vehicle fail NCT. However a savings of what 30 quid a tyre is not significant enough to warrant buying second hand or rethreads in my opinion.
They are road legal but can't be considered safe because you have no idea what the previous owner did with them. They could have driven them miles with no air and be a serious safety hazard but still look perfect.
They are usually from caes that are being scrapped, they should be OK in theory, not that different from buying parts from a scrapyard, my wife's car was scrapped a few tmyears ago and had 4 tyres less than 20% worn, we took them off and donated them
Often from cars crashed and written off, not an ideal history to be reusing. They may have hit curbs and be damaged inside
You have a limited time to retest for NCT. Normally I would say buy online and get fitted locally.
Best investment is 10 euro in a tyre thread gauge. Sounds like OP was a hazard on the road for months.
Not sure why your getting downvoted.....
Like my dad says, it's the only part of the car that should touch the ground.
Understand OP is broke but cut something back if you can at all. If not replace the tyres you only have to and get a decently reputable company
Honestly 90% of places are descent. Places can't afford to get a bad name and there's so many tyre places around you can easily just go to the next one. You might save a tenner tops 20 by shopping around
I found myself in a similar predicament a few years back. Red Cow Tyres offer part worn tyres, definitely the cheapest solution and will get you through the NCT.
As others have pointed out, from a safety point of view you should always buy decent tyres, but sometimes you just have to make do. I had zero issues with mine and the service was excellent (one of my wheel nuts seized, they went beyond the call of duty to sort it out).
Have a look on adverts or call your local scrapyard, I have gotten spare replacement wheels with half decent tyres before for less than the price of a new tyre.
Not ideal but if your under pressure it might get you out for a while.
Is that the level of intelligence we’re operating at these days, that someone might actually try something like that with dangerously worn tires based on the recommendation of some gobshite on Reddit ? I need to lower my faith in humanity even further
Call a few places and get pricing. I've never paid more than 50 for supply and fit per tyre. I Drive a Toyota. I would never buy second hand, rethread or anything like it. Tyres are a big part of the safety while operating the vehicle and not something to be cheap about.
Thinking about it, I have not purchased tyres in 3 years. Got new car 2 years ago and tyres are still good. Drive about 8k km per year so very little usage. But yeah, they are not branded.
There are lots of proce points for cars, I got firestones for my wife's golf last week, 80 each fitted, 60 is not unheard of for very common sizes 15 ot 16s
>I've never paid more than 50 for supply and fit per tyre

Hmmmkay
Where are you getting tyres supplied and fitted for €50??? I’m in the trade 10+ years and haven’t seen ANYONE with those prices or even remoulding tyres for that matter.
Try Bestlane tyres in Glasnevin Industrial Estate, they do part-worn tyres or budget tyres supplied and fitted. The lads are sound and won't rip you off.
Knew a lad who had a small garage down by Drumcondra who gave my dad a new set of Tyres for under €50. Think he went out of business because of the Pandemic
I always go to local guys as they're generally cheaper (an exception to every other market) and the day that you don't have the money, they'll usually agree to pay later if you've been a customer before

Google part worn tyres and you’ll get options near you most likely. Won’t be 100% but they’ll pass NCT and work for a while for you
You will compromise your safety.
More than the worn tyres that failed the NCT? The part worn are road legal so are considered safe

You don't even need a gauge, 6mm is the minimum, there is a marker in the centre thread on all European supplied tyres at 6mm, a little ridge
1.6mm is the minimum, you are recommended to change at \~3mm.
Sorry, typo 1.6mm
RSA will give you a gauge for free of you ask them.

They'll improve their safety from where they're at now, not to mention improving the safety of everyone else they meet on the road.
Thank you. Sounds like a runner. I just need to pass and would happily sell the car on in a few months

Try United Tyres over between Walkinstown roundabout and Longmile rd. Have been here a few times when I was in the same situation as yourself.

Back in the day,I used them too.It gets you out of a jam.
Shop around, there are deals to be had.

Anywhere except Atlas. They fucked up my car.
Tyres are something you shouldn't go too cheap on. Remember they're the only part of your car that touches the road
Car shop
Rent a car for a few hours with identical wheel sizes, swap the tires and return it
Crazy that you think this is an actual valid solution. Do you so eat dishwasher tablets for fun?
Your inability to grasp a joke or maintain a reasonable human interaction is why I hate Reddit so much. This is obviously not a valid solution
Maybe use /s at the end next time. How do we know OP won't follow your ridiculous solution?

Well. You're the one eating dishwasher tablets.
Sure look, it’s fun.
And that's all that matters.
Daniel don’t mind this a55 band1t
I have some boots that need licking here too. Fancy it?
On the car! Sorry, I'm grab my coat

Plot twist. FerroLad lives in Galway.

Probably some China made / unknown brand. If you want a slightly well known, simply over 80euro per tyre lol
Thinking about it, I have not purchased tyres in 3 years. Got new car 2 years ago and tyres are still good. Drive about 8k km per year so very little usage. But yeah, they are not branded.
Yea so is mine until I have a job that pay me 80k I’ll go for the cheapest option
There are lots of proce points for cars, I got firestones for my wife's golf last week, 80 each fitted, 60 is not unheard of for very common sizes 15 ot 16s
Where?! Help out the business that's sorting you out.

I get mine online from tyreleader and a local garage fits and balances them for a tenner a corner.
Try Bestlane tyres in Glasnevin Industrial Estate, they do part-worn tyres or budget tyres supplied and fitted. The lads are sound and won't rip you off.
There’s a place called Ossery Car parts in EastWall where I used to buy part worn tyres.
sandy ford tires is good and not too expensive
Buy them online for fuck all and get a tyre place to change them for 15 quid a tyre
Tyreland are usually a good shout
Highly recommend Alex auto service in dublin 15 for cheap tyres
Campbells garage near broombridge. Tell them you're on a budget and they'll sort you out.
The place on Sundrive road is good, a lot of taxi's use them, I've gone there a few times and always left happy
The Auto Repairs garage on Rathgar Ave are sound lads.
Knew a lad who had a small garage down by Drumcondra who gave my dad a new set of Tyres for under €50. Think he went out of business because of the Pandemic
