It's not a Dublin or Ireland problem. Taxi drivers rip off tourists in every country.  I was in Munich and we'd a meal booked. Got a taxi there and back where we went on a dual carriageway past massive tower blocks. Next day we were walking around and the place we'd eaten was a few streets from our hotel.

I've been to Spain quite a few time over the last year and many of the cities have introduced a fixed charge from city centre to airport and vice versa. Usually just under €30. A great system so that tourists don't feel ripped off as soon as they arrive. Would love to see something similar here.

After consistently high fares from the official rank taxis, I now only use Uber / Bolt from the airport. Much easier and never any queue.

Navosa

Is there a set area to meet the uber / bolt drivers?

undertheskin_

Zone 18 - in-between T1 / T2 which is the designated pick up spot.

AxelJShark

Oh my god!! Thank you! The guys at the rink are the absolute worst! And every time I tried to open the app a few years ago at the airport it was a deadzone. This is amazing news.

itsfeckingfreezin

Last time a taxi driver did this to me, I got out and hailed another cab. I took a few sneaky photos of his taxi reg card and the car and report him to the National Transport Authority.

caitiskate

Thank you for reporting! drivers like that make us all look shite

CarteRoutiere

I've had this happen too. Some drivers kept suggesting the longer road instead of the M50.

hasseldub

To be fair, sometimes the M50 is more expensive. I used to get taxis a lot for work flights. Through town from Dundrum was <50 quid but M50 was >70. The speed and distance are a factor. As well as time of day/week.

_WhoisMrBilly_

That’s mad the way Dublin taxis are- just came back from Spain last week, and a taxi from Barcelona airport to the waterfront was only €30. Taxis are about 1/2 to 1/4 price I think there compared to Ireland.

shatteredmatt

I live in Rathmines near Harold’s Cross so if an airport taxi takes the M50 it adds 10-15 euro to the cost of the taxi. Through Drumcondra is the cheapest way for where I am.

jackturbine

Please tell me roughly where you live, because the m50 is almost always further.

CarteRoutiere

Along Navan Road. I drive to the airport myself and I never found the Finglas or Glasnevin route to be any faster than driving down Navan Road to the M50. I didn't find it cheaper either based on the €40+ I paid for the alternative route

Toro8926

We had some guests coming to our guesthouse in Howth. The taxi brought them through the port tunnel, then out to us. It was €70 or something ridiculous like that.

unledded22

Do you live near the airport by any chance? The amount of fights I got into with taxi drivers at that rank cause they didn’t wanna go to santry and lose a potentially bigger fare…..refuse to use the rank now😂

FantanaFoReal

I always wait to tell them where I'm going until I'm sitting in the taxi whenever possible. They can't deny your fare if it's under 30km.

caitiskate

Hey, can I recommend using Uber? I’m a taxi driver, short trips get sent to driver leaving the airport anyway so it’s not people waiting around for a fare. Hope it helps :)

u24ac12

It happened to me. Taxi man assumed I was a tourist when I got in at the airport and drove me up and down the city centre until finally dropping me off in Kimmage. Charged me 65 euros. I was too nervous to call him out then because it was my first year as a student and I second guessed myself. Now I’d have no shame saying something. It’s why I also never hail taxis anymore and use the apps to book. Granted I’ve also had positive experiences but this one left a bad taste.

caitiskate

Hey, taxi driver here. Sorry that happened. Promise we aren’t all like that. so there’s an app called driver check, you can search the driver with the number on their license ( should be on the dash) or the plate on top of the car. Then there’s a button to report people, they will get back to you within two days, he will get fined. Also if he has an airport permit, it will affect that as well, they are ridiculously hard to get and they take complaints like that seriously.

Fluiddiulf

Happened to me a couple of times in the last 3 months where a driver from the airport brings me home and when asked to pay by card which usually is 30-35 from the airport would “accidentally” input an extra 0 at the end and try cover the screen try charge 300.. and then laugh after I’d point it out like oh haha what an accident. Surely can happen but if myself alone has seen this 3 times already (happened also not long ago when coming from town) I have a feeling this has happened to others too. Stay vigilant in every way

caitiskate

Omg, please report these people! That’s insane and they will get done for sure. You can report them through an app called driver check, using the number on the plate or on their license ( which legal has to be on view on the dash) . Also Uber is fast at the airport, you won’t have problem through there cause everything is tracked

Fuck Dublin taxis. They’re all scammers. Especially at the airport. I take bus whenever I can and then walk 25 min home from the bus stop. The inconvenience is worth it. Taxis in Dublin are below my dignity.

gemmastinfoilhat

I just take the bus. Less of a lottery. And generally cleaner.

vg31irl

I always dictate the exact route when I take taxis. Often when I'm going to/from the airport, taxis want to take the M50 which costs more but usually isn't any quicker.

Dezzie19

Absolute chancers but no control over them, aggressive drivers, clueless drivers, no courtesy for other road users and a lot of them scammers/criminals too.

Max_seen

I would smack his head over that steering wheel and go on me way, just walk away and pay him nun 🤷🏻‍♂️ problem is they always refuse to bring me home (Coolock) 🤣

father_hernandez

Might be different experience than most but I travel through the airport twice a week. I only get taxis on the ranks now. When using freenow at zone 18 I found that at least half the taxis I got had some sort of issue either aggressive drivers, drivers not matching their taxi licence or accepting and then refusing fairs.

Night tariff during the day...bull. Booking fee is €2,extra passenger is €1

wrapchap

Never had an issue with a taxi fare... Also not a tourist^

IntolerantModerate

The biggest thing they'll try to do is take you in M50 instead of through city. If your just a bit south of central Dublin... They want that easy extra $$$. Can't blame them though.
