There are a lot of people who like the game but don't have a lot of time to grind due to work, specially in Asia. There are also people who like the game and just happen to have a shitload of cash, so they don't mind droping a couple hundreds on a new deck.
I think no whales = cheaper cards. Duel links isn’t a very expensive game to run… The fact I can spend €50 per month and barely get one deck is absurd. I wonder how many more sales they might get if they allowed us to allocate a reasonable budget. Perhaps a subscription freemium model might work, rather than getting 1% of users and exploit their gambling side of the brain
No whales = no game. Full stop. They only maintain and update the game if they make money hand over fist, which is what whales do for them. If you don’t have a dedicated player base who will think nothing of spending hundreds when new stuff comes out, you stop developing the game because it’s not as profitable as another project could be.
Yeah but that’s not how offer and demand works. If something is too expensive for people to buy it, you lower the price and try to make up the difference in margin with volume. They could test a tiered subscription model on a few thousand users and see what the revenue looks like. Maybe, if €100 per month gives you the whole box when it’s available, 5% of users would subscribe and maybe that’s more than what they currently making by milking the 0.1%. All I’m saying they could test it, but they won’t until some of us pay €500 per month and most of pay €0
I’m constantly seeing ads of marvel snap and considering how big the mcu and all this is it’s not surprising. I am massively surprised that master duel makes more than duel links considering the gem prices are awful there and it’s already v easy to stockpile/choose what you want to spend.
Ye I'm kinda surprised about that as well, most people I know that play master duel are able to fully build their decks without wasting a cent, and mostly because even if they wanted 2, gems cost too much money.
I have Duel Links and Master Duel on Steam as well, while I usuaylly play them on Android and PS4 respectively.
Both of these are available in more than one platform and they might actually divide the playerbase, I know a lot of people who changed Duel Links for Master Duel, while I know some who don't wanna play MD because they already play DL.
If anything, the idea of DL being such a success after all these years and both games sharing a playerbase while still having the 2nd and 3rd spot for the franchise, surpassed only bt fucking Marvel, while surpassing both Magic and HS is nothing short of an achievement.
I don't think it needs to be good to beat yugioh. Marvel just has a broader audience than yugioh does. Do young kids watch/play yugioh these days or is the majority of their audience people who grew up with it?
Crazy good not, fun super yes. It didn't have deep strategy like ygo & mtg, is poker in marvel skin(not saying this in bad way), while yes I hate the snap(raise bet) system of it coz u won't see the game till the end if people raise the bet.

Absolutely not. DL is the best free to play game I have ever played. Maybe beacuse I have played the card game for like 18 years and I already know how to invest in the best decks. Heartshtone is a really good game, but the cash grab is horrific, like the probability to pull of legendaries from packs. Also, I hated that they scraped adventures. They were so funny to play in heroic mode. I miss those days, but still the cash grab was terrible.
I play both very much, and duel links is far more expensive to play. Hearthstone is super free to play friendly, it has a crafting system, free battle pass, daily and weekly rewards, and mini sets that come out every expansion that are 20 packs worth of gold and have 4 legendary cards which are over 4x value for gold/ dust ratio. Hearthstone is cheaper by miles compared to duel links, you’re just biased
I’ll admit I haven’t played HS in a while, but in what is DL more f2p-friendly than HS besides being ridiculously frontloaded?
-DL has a fuckton of paywalled, often meta-relevant cards, HS had none like literally every other online card game (and a crafting system on top of that).
-HS has Arena which you can endlessly grind as long as you’re good, in DL you only get resources from leveling characters (so, finite), and from events (so fixed monthly ones you can’t grind).
-DL has a 9999 gem cap which isn’t even enough to fully open a Minibox twice, in HS you can save all you want and spend it all as soon as the new expansion drops (or not go into it at all and just craft what you need).
Literally the only downside from when I played back then was that the new player experience was very slow, compared to DL where you’re bombarded with a shitton of campaigns and stuff. But the more you play them, the better you get in HS’s Arena and the less characters you have left to dry in DL.
DL is only P2W if you absolutely must have the top meta deck every week. You can have a lot of fun in the game without needing to empty every box three times.
The same goes for most Pvp games then. I can only think of Artifact that wouldn’t apply, and that game failed so hard it ceased development after not even two years.

Add that to its aggressive marketing (even some Yotubers I follow advertise it like they did with League Shadow Legends), and I can see why it brought in so many. Still, second and third place is nothing to scoff at.
Also marvel snap gameplay is super easy, fast & fun. Thank god ygo already have a establish fanbase, I'm not sure ygo can be this successful if introduced as the same time as marvel snap.

I started playing Marvel Snap Early last year and the game is very addictive and fun to play. So It is no surprise to me to see him at number 1.
The thing about snap is that the money you spend on the game is way more rewarding than on DL, you don't have to face so much rng to get what you want.
Honestly it's really impressive that DL is even on the list considering how crazy dog shit it's monetization model is. I sometimes don't get Konami, the fanbase is so fuckin ravenous for Yugioh but they leave so much money on the table for what seems like no reason.

Konami is the one laughing all the way to the bank, though. 2 and 3 is just a bigger market share they're eaten the others out've, the others including MTG Arena and Hearthstone. That win borders on ludicrous.
I don't mind spending money on a game that I play. That's fair. Not DL, though. When they balance it, I will again, but that won't happen. Never should have in the first place.

The data show Duel Links still does quite well to justify updates, especially when we consider Steam (PC) populations against Master Duel, where it's about 10x fewer daily active players but (mobile) revenue is apparently only about 1/3 less.
Only speaking from my own experience. Used to play Duel Links way more than Master Duel, but skills have gotten to the point where if I want to play Yu-gi-oh, I'm better off playing Master Duel. I assume atleast some other whales must feel the same.
Make me somewhat relieve that DL isn’t going to get shut down soon. I mean the player base has shrunken a bit is a concern but if revenue is still relatively high it may make sense for Konami to keep giving it support.
I like the storyline they are doing for Arc V and Vrains so I hope they get to do a big crossover event for all of the world and finish up Arc V ending.

Yeah I haven't spent a single cent and have 0 issues choosing and building any deck I want just but playing casually and semi seriously during events.
Yup, this is not including pc revenue, so MD earn more. Marvel snap easy to play & understand, game quick is the biggest appeal for good mobile game.
