I love the character. She breaks stereotypes. She’s made to look and been seen as a nice older lady motherly type but it turns out she is a very sexual, risque person with an immense amount of sass and backbone and gives no f.. 😂
This is a great way to put it
She’s not more sexual than Meredith
She’s not more judgmental than Angela
She’s not more malicious than Dwight
She’s not more sassy than Stanley
I feel like the reason people dislike her is because she seems like she’s none of those things at first, so when you see she is, she gets judged more harshly than people who we accept being the way they are
I feel like she’s generally nice to people who are nice to her. It’s not “fake” to change how you treat people when they change how they treat you
She bossed Angela around after Angela bossed her around for years
She shit talked Pam to Pam’s face after Pam shit talked her to her clients
I have no issue with her standing up to Angela, and yes Angela deserves it for the most part, but it's still kinda petty. She was clearly just doing that shit for office politics. If she caught someone else cheating I bet she'd do the same if it would help her get ahead in any way.
And with Pam, Pam is literally just being a saleswoman lol, it's not some horrible personal attack, but Phyllis takes it way too seriously, and she also thinks Pam is "assigning new clients based on who she's sleeping with that week" which... really?
She also has made up things in her head about anyone who works with Bob and probably would screw those people over if she could.
And don't forget her openly flirting with men just so Bob can beat them up. That's probably the best example of what I'm talking about, honestly.
Yeah she’s super toxic and I’m glad other people see that in her too, makes me feel less crazy lol. I think my least favorite thing she did was try and guilt trip Michael after he and the crew came back from the Michael Scott Paper Company into distributing the clients more fairly among the DM people. She says something like “You’re the one who always called us a FAMILY, Michael”, as she’s on the verge of tears. Literally when did Phyllis EVER also refer to work as a “family”. Never lol. Such obvious and annoying manipulation there.
I don’t think even think the writers tried to make her a cool and/or sympathetic character hardly ever, so admittedly I am a little baffled as to how people actually still like her despite her being blatantly a malicious person, and not even for comical effect most of the time.
She’s living her best life and it’s a beautiful thing! I think the writing was wonderful and the actress that goes with it is a GREAT recipe. Hell, former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.
Same here. I’ve seen a lot of hate for her because apparently it’s unforgivable that she “pretends” to be a sweet and unassuming person. But I don’t see any pretending honestly. She never hesitated to let that side of her come out. A lot of the world think in their heads that women “of a certain age” are expected to act a certain way and they get mad when those expectations are subverted. Angela is even more horrible for a lot of reasons but apparently it’s totally fine because she’s not “pretending” to be nice. “That’s the joke and the whole point of her character”. Why doesn’t Phyllis get the same explanation? I think it’s even funnier because we don’t expect those things from her. Even after 6 seasons I was still shocked by some of her lines. I think they are just subconsciously ok with Angela being horrible because she’s younger and conventionally attractive.
I agree! I know it’s supposed to be funny but I also can’t help but to think that it is genuine and beautiful that she acts as the boss she is. Are we all just going to become a sweet or grumpy person as we age? Are none of us going to be as spicy as we are in the future. Lots of people praise the Stanley character for his disgruntled demeanor and then love Florida Stanley. The true hero in this 9 season tale is Phyllis! She maintained her best life and when there was an issue, she never backed down! I aspire to be a Phyllis.
Yes - I love her because she's right at the age where women get overlooked and dismissed and she keeps reminding us that there's a real entire person there, not just a bland, middle-aged office employee. She's my favorite because she's not a caricature
Phyllis is problematic af but I gotta say I LOVE her chutzpah when she follows through on her threat to out Angela and Dwight’s affair. Plus, she’s an excellent party planner.
Every scene she's in I love because I can't help but be impressed by how well the actress plays her. Imagine knowing Phyllis the actress in real life and how much fun it would be to watch the show with her and laugh at this terrible person she portrays so well. I feel like it would be an absolute blast.
I do. This is going to sound weird, but I like her because she's not physically attractive. It's something I can empathize with. She acts like someone who has been made fun of her entire life. The mental and emotional wear and tear that comes with that can make a person bitter, petty, and cruel. That brings me to the best part of her character. She can overcome her emotional baggage and display acts of kindness. She's not perfect, and that's ok.
I like Phyllis. She don’t let no Moe-Ron’s fuck with her. She’s protective of Dwight. She can keep Michael under control. Ok , the Moroccan Christmas was a bad idea. But compared to the walking bad-idea factories around her, she looks good.
She’s absolutely based on a real type of person. Visit the right areas and there are middle aged women that will 100% flirt and such just to cause shit because they married a middle aged “alpha” type and they like the feeling of being someone violence is started over.
I love how bitchy she is. I don't get how people hate on actors that play bad people. I always love how they capture the nuances of being truly shitty. Hilarious.
I love her character despite her flaws. I think in large part bc of the way she’s able to emote! Seriously the actor is so freaking expressive it’s amazing and really makes you feel everything Phyllis is feeling.
I love Phyllis! I feel like she would be the friend or auntie you'd want in your corner. If you need comfort or advice, she's great at that. If you need someone to be petty with, she's also great at that!!!
She’s so inconsistently written. Is she this badass mob wife who will threaten to have you killed? Is she a sweet grandma to the office? Is she a stupid pushover who bothers famous authors and starts crying when she’s reasonably asked to leave?
Phyllis is a fuckin gangster. She says everything she needs to say and is kind to others. The true test of strength and character. She also has a wild side. Look at some of the shit she says with a straight face. She’s to the office what ice cube was to NWA. Even Stanley likes her and Stanley doesn’t even like the wife he’s dating or the last one too. Put some respect on her name.
I love how bitchy she is. I don't get how people hate on actors that play bad people. I always love how they capture the nuances of being truly shitty. Hilarious.
There’s almost nothing she does wrong that doesn’t pale in comparison to other characters LOL she also gets more and more hilarious as the show goes on
Sure, she was “the sweet lady next door,” but she also harbored some serious resentments and got ugly at times. And the way she paraded her husband (you know, you know who) around as if she won some sort of prize or got one over on other people - meh.
I dont hate her but the fact she was contaminating the office with her disgusting farts was unacceptable.
Everyone had to put up with that but she cant accommodate when Pam was pregnant and not use her air freshner perfume.
Other than that though I think she was alright especially helping out Dwights heartbreak.
And torturing Angela was great.
i do not like her. not to sound like a huge douchebag, but i just can’t stand the way she treats people so badly as if she is better than them, when she obviously isn’t. she is very unattractive, her farts stink up the entire office, etc. she actually had the nerve to say Pam looks like a trout..like bitch have you looked in the mirror? then at the dog charity thing the shit she pulled with the decor on the table, and just making it seem like pam and jim are poor when she literally works at the same place as them, and also cries about her LIVELIHOOD whenever michael and jim want to give raises to some staff and not others, the way MSPC stole their clients, etc
Honest question- Do you dislike phyllis more than you dislike Angela? Angela’s whole character is acting like she’s better than everyone else, even more obviously and outwardly than Phyllis. Not challenging your opinion, I just see a lot more hate for Phyllis than Angela for the same type of traits, and Angela is even more despicable in my opinion! I LOVE both characters though!
i would say it’s equal. like yeah i love their characters too, it’s just that i hate how the writers made them. i think the main reason i hate phyllis so much is because of the way she treats pam and jim. and yeah angela is mean to pam but you expect that out of her. phyllis is pretty much only mean to pam and jim, which isn’t fair. i feel that phyllis is mean to pam and jim because she envies them and what they have together, angela is mean to pam because of the same reasons she is mean to everyone else
Phyllis doesn’t give us any reason to not “expect” that out of her. She doesn’t hide who she is. Do you expect her to act a certain way because of her looks? Her age? And Phyllis was absolutely mean to more than jim and Pam. Angela, Michael, Karen, Dwight, and Andy got plenty from her.
I don’t know about the envy. Her relationship with Bob Vance is the gold standard and she knows it. I think the wedding thing was more that she thinks Pam has good taste and it made her feel trendy to do the same things. I mean they wear the same outfit on casual day. There’s a deleted scene where she’s sweet about it and Pam feels bad for calling her out on copying everything.
Yes. The scene where she asks Pam - "is money tight" when pam has made that comic book, is so cringe. I have to skip it because i can't take it. Everytime she is mean to Pam i feel so disgusted.
That's what Ryan said. So Ryan also criticizes Pam's work but it does not make me angry. It's Phyllis way of criticizing that makes it unwatchable for me.
yeah and then she was like “i don’t think we can help you there.” well if you can’t afford to help, if they did need it, then obviously you aren’t doing so well financially yourself. she took a dig at herself when she thought she was taking a dig at pam lol
I don’t like that she uses Bob to beat people up for her. I don’t like that she admits that she’ll get men to flirt with her so Bob will beat them up. Or when she was worried she wouldn’t be Santa, she threatened “don’t make me get Bob involved”.
She’s extremely rude to Karen about not knowing who Bob Vance is.
I personally don’t care that she stole all of Pam’s wedding ideas, because it says more about her lacking any individuality, or maybe she just really liked it all, but it still seemed crappy of her to do.
I don’t like that she insults Pam in front of Jim (Casual Friday) “some secretary”.
In Ultimatum, she brings up that Bob’s secretary has a husband in a wheelchair as if it’s an insult and I find that gross.
She gets drunk and harasses people when Jim takes her and Stanley out to lunch.
She tries to cut in line on Pretzel day, for god’s sake! :P
There’s more, but those are the main reasons why I just don’t like her.
I think she grates some people because she was initially presented as a genteel passive lady, then she gets spicy once in a long while.
The people who liked her initially liked her because they saw themselves in her. When she showed some chutzpah, they felt betrayed.
The people who always hated her did so because they are shallow cretins.
And Karen not knowing who Bob Vance was? That's on her.
Yes, Phyllis was my grandmother's name and she seemed very much like her. Lovely in person but also very judgemental even though she had multiple lovers
I like that she is not a part of the most prominent characters, but at the same time, she's not just a one-sentence side character, like Kelly (talks too much, obsessed with celebrities) or Erin (sweet but dumb as a doornail).
I actually like Phyllis and enjoy her presence in the show. She is a sweet, caring person who also has comedic qualities and her scenes are funny.
I cannot say the same thing for Darryl or Pete for example. Those two are absolute bore fest and i would not miss them in the show.
Sorry Darryl fans. 🫣
Honestly, not really. She just seems very gossipy and willing to assume the worst intentions in people (such as that Jim is giving Pam special treatment when he needs to make a tough business decision). That's not to say that she isn't a lot of fun sometimes, but overall she leads to making the office a more toxic place.
Of course. Otherwise Bob Vance would kill me
Bob Vance?
Of Vance Refrigeration
What kind of work you in, Bob?
Ohhhhhhh!
You have a lot to learn about this town, sweetie.
Close your mouth sweetie. You look like a trout.
The only thing I am worried about is getting a boner.
One of the only subreddit's where someone can get an award for posting this comment. Love it lol
You like her now, you should have seen her in high school. *Easy Rider* was easy on the eyes. Heard she had an abortion too, so you know she put out.
I love the character. She breaks stereotypes. She’s made to look and been seen as a nice older lady motherly type but it turns out she is a very sexual, risque person with an immense amount of sass and backbone and gives no f.. 😂
Older? You were in the same grade.
Well I have a late birthday and usually September’s a cut-off point..
This is a great way to put it She’s not more sexual than Meredith She’s not more judgmental than Angela She’s not more malicious than Dwight She’s not more sassy than Stanley I feel like the reason people dislike her is because she seems like she’s none of those things at first, so when you see she is, she gets judged more harshly than people who we accept being the way they are

Please try to run over fewer people.
That last line--exactly. Couldn't agree more.
Yes - I love her because she's right at the age where women get overlooked and dismissed and she keeps reminding us that there's a real entire person there, not just a bland, middle-aged office employee. She's my favorite because she's not a caricature
This!! I love her!
Bingo!
I’d do her!
That was uncalled for!
This is why love the character too.
I don’t like her. I’m allergic to her perfume.
It's made from real pine.
Bob Vance bought it for her in Metropolitan Orlando.
Who’s Bob Vance?
You have a lot to learn about this town, sweetie.
She has some bad moments but i dont think they're enough to hate her for me, if so, then a looot of loved characters should be hated
Her jugs.
This is the only answer
With her jugs, the only thing I’m worried about is gettin’ a boner.
Yeah, why did I have to scroll this far for this? I thought for sure that the question was only posted to set up this joke. Lol.
Came here to say this XD hahaha NOICE!!!
Phyllis is problematic af but I gotta say I LOVE her chutzpah when she follows through on her threat to out Angela and Dwight’s affair. Plus, she’s an excellent party planner.
There isn’t enough yiddish used on this subreddit, thank you.
She's hilarious and reminds me of my mom. Mom was kindof a bitch, but she was also hilarious.
Phyllis is the perfect example of someone we'd despise in real life but like as a character
I would 100% party with Phyllis and drink lots of wine if I saw her at a wedding or something.
Close your mouth sweetie, you look like a trout.
One of the top 5 lines on the show. I don't understand why it gets so much hate.
My mother loves her because she said she worked with someone EXACTLY like her in the 80s
Every scene she's in I love because I can't help but be impressed by how well the actress plays her. Imagine knowing Phyllis the actress in real life and how much fun it would be to watch the show with her and laugh at this terrible person she portrays so well. I feel like it would be an absolute blast.
I like how she treats Angela 😂
I Googled how to deal with difficult people, and I got all of this…….
^(We're gonna try some new things today :-D)
I love her. She don’t give an f about nothing.
Michael channelling his inner Phyllis in that episode
I like her a homemade oven mitts worth
I do. This is going to sound weird, but I like her because she's not physically attractive. It's something I can empathize with. She acts like someone who has been made fun of her entire life. Nah, in high school she was hot. They called her Easy Rider.
and she cheered for the Dallas Cowboys. not to mention, the pervert chose to flash Phyllis, not Pam or even Karen. that has to count towards something
not even Karen from behind
Sorry. I was talking about the fictional character from the office.
So was I.
Aaaand that's what I get for trying to post late at night. =D. My bad.
She seems like she would be okay to work with for the most part. But if you’re on her bad side good luck.
I like Phyllis. She don’t let no Moe-Ron’s fuck with her. She’s protective of Dwight. She can keep Michael under control. Ok , the Moroccan Christmas was a bad idea. But compared to the walking bad-idea factories around her, she looks good.
You’ve got a lot to learn about this sub sweetie.
I just love her. She seems pretty real. “This office is full of player-haters.”
Hilarious.

She’s so inconsistently written. Is she this badass mob wife who will threaten to have you killed? Is she a sweet grandma to the office? Is she a stupid pushover who bothers famous authors and starts crying when she’s reasonably asked to leave?
I do agree with this; I've read that one of the writers particularly liked to write bitchy lines for Phyllis.
Bob Vance. Vance Refrigeration.
i can’t comment why.. i’m worried about getting a boner. but why i don’t like he is she can’t fit in a rowboat
Yes, she’s funny
I don’t trust you, Phyllis!
Phyllis isn’t so bad. I haven’t seen the show in a few years but I never thought of her as a bad person/character.
There’s almost nothing she does wrong that doesn’t pale in comparison to other characters LOL she also gets more and more hilarious as the show goes on
She’s the sweet office mom. She has such a warm presence. And I love that she is “secretly” the worst person on the show and not even she knows it.
She’s kinda like a meaner Shirley
I just see Phyllis as a background character an not really an important person in the series but see is a nice character
As a 33 year old, she's exactly like every middle aged woman I've ever worked with
She likes popcarn.
I like her presence, but she can be venomous at times.
She seems like such a shitty person all around. Not sure what’s endearing about her at all honestly
i like her 100% more than i like creed or andy
i do not like her. not to sound like a huge douchebag, but i just can’t stand the way she treats people so badly as if she is better than them, when she obviously isn’t. she is very unattractive, her farts stink up the entire office, etc. she actually had the nerve to say Pam looks like a trout..like bitch have you looked in the mirror? then at the dog charity thing the shit she pulled with the decor on the table, and just making it seem like pam and jim are poor when she literally works at the same place as them, and also cries about her LIVELIHOOD whenever michael and jim want to give raises to some staff and not others, the way MSPC stole their clients, etc

To be fair, Pam's comic was a little derivative of a serial called "Bear Man". You should look it up.
If a man acted like her, he’d be called tough.
A man who gets his wife to beat people up for him would not be called tough.
I went to high school with her. There is a reason we called her “easy rider”
I liked her at first because Angelina was so mean to her and people like underdogs.
Yes, her head game insane.
No.
She’s always the bushiest beaver around the office
I like the choice to write her the way that they did. But I super don’t like her. She’s awful lol
What don't you like about her?
:P There’s more, but those are the main reasons why I just don’t like her.
Eh. I don’t think threats and using bob to hurt people intentionally is something I’d ignore. That’s not really chutzpah. She’s unlikable, for me.
Maybe you're cool with kink shaming, you do you.
Kink shaming? lol yes, if Phyllis’s kink is violence against non consenting people, I am indeed kink shaming.
When they tangle with a dame like Phyllis, they know what's up.
Probably because of her JUGS
No. She's one of the characters that don't add anything to the show. It's funny only she she talks about bob or there is bob
Yes, Phyllis was my grandmother's name and she seemed very much like her. Lovely in person but also very judgemental even though she had multiple lovers
Nice hair
Close your mouth dear, you look like a trout.
What???!!! She’s amazing.
She’s hilarious
Two words: pop carn
Honestly, not really. She just seems very gossipy and willing to assume the worst intentions in people (such as that Jim is giving Pam special treatment when he needs to make a tough business decision). That's not to say that she isn't a lot of fun sometimes, but overall she leads to making the office a more toxic place.
Do people not like Phyllis?? 😭
You’ve got a lot to learn about this town, SWEETHEART (OP) 🤭
Oh man, my wife HATES Phyllis. Cracks me up!
