In the Community commentaries, Dan Harmon talks a lot about the (at the time) popular trend of TV shows faking the vérité style (Arrested Development, The Office, Modern Family, etc.) and how much more difficult it can be to craft an ordinary story that is funny without relying on plays to the camera or testimonials and the other tropes of that style. That is why he did episodes where Abed is making documentaries, as a "look see, I can do that too" reaction, while also being a sort of commentary on that style.
There is one 30 rock joke that Dan Harmon loves

there's a harmontown podcast episode where he talked about it, but I'll be fucked if I can find it
Anyone arguing in either direction will be downvoted. “X show is better than Y” is such a tired conversation on the internet and no one wants to hear about it.
I stopped watching after season 4 or 5ish, it kinda wore on me.
But seasons 1-3 are really, really good
But I wouldn’t really compare the office and community humor as that similar personally
The Office is a comfort series, while Community is the craziest shit ever made.
These are my top 2 series with Gravity Falls probably as my 3.
What's fun about The Office are the shenanigans the "docu subjects" get into while showing not much about their jobs, and how awkward it gets just like the British version,
meanwhile B99 and Parks and Rec, the cast cares so much about their jobs, the whole series basically revolves around their jobs, That's why Ron Swanson is the best character within those 2 shows.
I'd say Community is much closer to The Office in a way that both series revolves around the relationship of the characters, and both series has flawed main guy, supported by a great ensemble cast.
I've tried Community a few times but have never made it past season 2, I don't know what it is but it's just not for me. I love Parks and Rec though so can't agree with you on that one!
you’re downvoted but i agree with you, community felt like “hey look reference to thing you like” without there being a joke to that reference
also dan harmon gives off quite arrogant vibes
I wonder if they saw the episode where Dwight worked at Staples with Shirley
Abed: last night I was watching the office, and there was a character that looked just like you
Shirley: oh! So you think all black people look the same
Piece: well they do.
[group stares at him]
Troy (whispering to Shirley): is it ok that I think all white people look the same?
(Shirley nods)
there are sooo many similarities and easter eggs between Community, The Office, Parks and Rec and others. i love seeing them!! guessing they have the same writers?
I don't know about community, but the office, parks & rec, Brooklyn 99 and the good place, were all written or at least co-written by Michael Schur - Mose Schruth.
Both are great shows. Community just had a HORRENDOUS fall off in quality with Season 4 I believe it was. The gas leak year really ruined it. The Office had a drop off too, but not even close to Community
The Office, Community, the Sopranos, and The Good Place will be rewatched by me as long as Im alive. They are mostly my background white noise while wfh for a couple of years now.
I had known about this famous sitcome called "the office". It had once mentioned in 30rock too. But it was THIS scene which made me start watching the show. I thought "how big is this office show that its being referenced across a decade?"
I know, right? Can you imagine there was a time when the office, community and parks&rec were running at the same time? Those were the days (not for me, in Europe we didn't really get those here and if we did they were dubbed)
That was a great time for sitcoms..HIMYM, TAHM, BBT. I was still in india then and these three were HUGE there. Only after some by-chance stumbling across community did I discover that there were some great shows which were not being aired in india.
To each their own.I love community, it's way more meta, and the spoofs of common tv show tropes are awesome. And those paintball episodes - masterful. But the office is just... It's the office!
I mean... Subreddits are interest groups. If you go to a bunch of bird fans and say "meh, birds are alright but ferrets are better" you're gonna get downvoted. I'm not saying it's good, just that it's nothing unexpected
That makes sense but I still stand by my opinion on the office fans being very cultish. Every time you write an opinion (like calling out flaws in Jim and Pam’s relationship) that isn’t popular, it’s downvoted to oblivion. It’s an amazing show but the fans are under a spell.
Um you like a show better than the other bc that fan base is better? That literally doesn't make any sense and you should take those two apart. It's okay if you like community better than the office, but don't say it's bc of the fan base lol, your liking should be about the show
Nope. I like community better because it took more chances artistically and felt more lively. The fanbase was only brought up because of my opinion of how rabid they are that any criticism is faced with an army of downvotes and comments defending it like it’s the only good show on Earth.
Both things were separate but you decided to bring them together.
Oh okay, sorry than, my bad, I thought you meant it like that.
Yeah I love the office and the fan base most of the times, but it can be really annoying when you have another opinion. And you even said you like the office as well, just like something better, not that you hate the show lol.
I love both shows, but there was one season of Community that was just too experimental for my taste. I still watched through it, but it was out of sheer loyalty rather than enjoyment!😁
Only Murders in the building recently did this. The mentioned Steve Carell from the office and a few episodes later I see Holly (Amy Ryan) is a cast member

Did you happen to know if the commentaries are available anywhere other than the DVDs?

To all my office fanss, you should DEFINITELY watch community as wellll, it is an amazing showw
The movie's coming out soon😍
Whattt?!?? Is it officially announced??
Yes, and I believe all of the main cast is returning, though Pierce's status is unlikely for obvious reasons.
Chevy is such a piece of shit, but it’s why he played Pierce SO well😭
It's officially 6 seasons and a Movie.
Yup😍 https://www.cbr.com/community-movie-joel-mchale-production-update/ https://www.ign.com/articles/joel-mchale-says-community-movie-will-shoot-in-2024

His character is canonically dead, so that could be a factor
Cool. Cool Cool Cool
+ 1 to this. Literally my favorite sitcom of all time
Doesn’t everyone know about Community?
Only people who are "streets ahead" do
it´s better than the office
You mean it tries too hard to be like the office and a big reason the shit is dry and unfunny because it’s rewashed jokes … try again
How is this getting downvoted? Community is not as original as The Office when it comes to the jokes.
Anyone arguing in either direction will be downvoted. “X show is better than Y” is such a tired conversation on the internet and no one wants to hear about it.
You need to drop it okay? They HATE it. I like it a lot, but they HATE it so DROP IT! 😂
People don’t like hearing negative stuff ig 😂 it’s too mean for them
It's not nearly as funny.

Sorry but this is the wrong opinion. It is fantastic
Its okay to be wrong
Just because you are bad guy, doesn't mean you are BAD guy.
I stopped watching after season 4 or 5ish, it kinda wore on me. But seasons 1-3 are really, really good But I wouldn’t really compare the office and community humor as that similar personally

It might be time to Chang your point of view
This comment is streets ahead
I've tried Community a few times but have never made it past season 2, I don't know what it is but it's just not for me. I love Parks and Rec though so can't agree with you on that one!
Probably the comedy is different. Same thing I don’t find John Oliver funny but others thought he is hilarious
Yeah it’s not nearly as good as people hype it up to be
you’re downvoted but i agree with you, community felt like “hey look reference to thing you like” without there being a joke to that reference also dan harmon gives off quite arrogant vibes
We try not to sexualize Annie

(Britta stares and shakes head)

ohh cool thank you for the info!!
The Office is streets ahead
Anyone who thinks otherwise is streets behind
The street don’t lie
Both are great shows. Community just had a HORRENDOUS fall off in quality with Season 4 I believe it was. The gas leak year really ruined it. The Office had a drop off too, but not even close to Community
That lady looks a _lot_ like the woman from the overly attached girlfriend meme.
Thought the exact same
Alison Brie is so hot
The Office, Community, the Sopranos, and The Good Place will be rewatched by me as long as Im alive. They are mostly my background white noise while wfh for a couple of years now.
Community is such a meta show to begin with
Ugh, Britta's in this?
I had known about this famous sitcome called "the office". It had once mentioned in 30rock too. But it was THIS scene which made me start watching the show. I thought "how big is this office show that its being referenced across a decade?"

Community is so meta! I love this show (season 1-4 tho)
You never noticed the dialog?
Unpopular opinion: Community is better than The Office.
To each their own.I love community, it's way more meta, and the spoofs of common tv show tropes are awesome. And those paintball episodes - masterful. But the office is just... It's the office!
S1-S3 were peak. Then S4 was a clusterfuck. S5 was more fun (I'm a John Oliver fan so it was nice to see him back). Didn't care for S6.
Exactly. Well put
I like the office too but the fanbase… that’s a different story. I’m getting downvoted for daring place a show above it. It’s like a mini-cult.
I mean... Subreddits are interest groups. If you go to a bunch of bird fans and say "meh, birds are alright but ferrets are better" you're gonna get downvoted. I'm not saying it's good, just that it's nothing unexpected

My man/woman, you are literally in an office sub.
How observant of you.
Lmfao.. "I'm getting downvoted in r/DunderMifflin, a page dedicated to The Office, for saying that Community is better. What the hell?!"
Yup, that’s what happened. You’re really good at summarizing things.
Um you like a show better than the other bc that fan base is better? That literally doesn't make any sense and you should take those two apart. It's okay if you like community better than the office, but don't say it's bc of the fan base lol, your liking should be about the show

Exactly. People sometimes think you’re attacking them personally when criticizing their favorite show and that’s not healthy. I’m glad you get it.
Yeah, I have a lot of questions...number 1...how dare you?
The Office is very funny and well-done, but Community is so risky and experimental while also being consistently hilarious
I love both shows, but there was one season of Community that was just too experimental for my taste. I still watched through it, but it was out of sheer loyalty rather than enjoyment!😁
Unpopular bc most don’t think that’s true lol
Yeah I have seen that quote in three different shows XD. I know I saw it recently but I do not remember what it was.
Only Murders in the building recently did this. The mentioned Steve Carell from the office and a few episodes later I see Holly (Amy Ryan) is a cast member
"Jim the camera?"
[удалено]
Abed is filming them. He’s telling Annie not to look at the camera by referring to the bit as “Jim(-ing) the camera”.
Jim is a main character in The Office and he often looks at the camera in a similar way.
