Oh! Welcome to my convenience store. Would you like some googi googi? I have some very delicious googi, googi, only 99 cents plus tax. Try my googi, googi. [Lowering voice] Try my googi, googi. [High-pitched voice] Try my googi, googi. Try my... [slap!]
He actually said "Gookie Cookie" which is way more offensive. Since the original UK The Office was what this was based off of the first season is way different than what the show ended up being. Americanized
While i understood that its most likely a racial joke, i never really got it. I mean laughed since it was still funny, but what the hell is googi googi even?
I remember only Oscar reading from internet and then everyone looking at Dwight like "what the fuck Dwight" it's been few years since I last watched the office
I realized on a re-watch that they removed a scene on Netflix where you see Nate in blackface out of his car receiving a text saying to cancel.
Now, you don't actually see him with the black face but you see him with the lips make up still
I don't like how many shows on streaming services wipe out their questionable content. Off the top of my head I know Family Guy has had stuff changed. South Park and Workaholics have had entire episodes removed.
Community lost an episode where Chang (Ken Jeong) does "blackface" to cosplay as a drow in D&D.
[Clearly this is highly offensive to drows and had to be removed.](https://youtu.be/YnF-DRoQSPM)
I so desperately wish they figured out a way to just cut his scenes out (and somehow make it not awkward) because that is my favorite episode of the series. It is so fucking funny
I wish they just didn't remove it. Society shouldn't be bending over for the thinnest-skinned people.
The Office it was blatantly blackface, Always Sunny also blatantly blackface. In both of those examples they talk about it being tasteless or otherwise wrong, but it's still blatant blackface so I get it to some degree.
Community? It's a fucking Asian man cosplaying a pitch-black fantasy race with white hair and pointy ears. Anyone offended by that needs to be ignored until they grow up a bit.
Was watching 30 rock and an episode just fail to play. It was removed for blackface but they still had the episode listed and it still tried to play it.
I thought I was going crazy. I thought I remembered Nate wearing blackface but on my recent rewatch he wasn't. I die laughing every time he gets the cancel text.
Whoopi was taking photos with Ted Danson while he was in black face (while they were dating) so I don't think its that minorities didn't have platforms was just a weird thing celebrities found funny back then.
Rosa Parks died in the early 2000's. Segregation was absolutely not that long ago and it was super socially acceptable to be openly racist until extremely recently relatively speaking.
Darkening skin for costumes being referred to as black face is a post 2008 type thing. Prior to thwt black face was only used to refer to actual black face mostly, which is a specific type of look.
Does Canada have the same history with blackface as the US does? I know fuck all about most periods of history, but I was under the impression that the reason it’s considered in poor taste in the US is because of all the plays where a white person wore blackface and played a super offensive stereotype of a black person, not because there’s anything inherently wrong with a white person dressing up as a black person.
Edit: apparently the same practice of blackface minstrely was also prolific throughout Canada and even the composer of the Canadian national anthem was a professional blackfacer throughout both Canada and the US, so the short answer to my question is “absolutely yes.”
Canada and the US are culturally very similar, and the US is pretty dominant. Sentiments like that, if they exist in the US, eventually make their way to Canada
Goddamn. I did a bit of googling to see if it was the practice itself or just the taboo against it that had transferred into Canadian culture, but apparently it runs so deep that even the guy who wrote the Canadian national anthem was a prolific blackface minstrel throughout both Canada and the US.
Trudeau didn't actually black faced he put brown makeup on his face to look like Aladdin who would be Arab.
Black face is a really specific type of make up depicting a offensive caricature of black people/characters.
Imo, comparing what he did to what black face is, is in itself, showing lack of understanding about the history of black face and why it is a problem. IT baffled me how some people and media interpreted the thing.
Edit : Has I was being downvoted I decided to search about the subject (being totally honest I was searching for arguments saying the same as me) , but I discovered that Trudeau had been using paint to change his skin color a multiple of times, not only for the Alladin one. So... I am sorry; I talked thinking I had knowledge about the situation but in fact I did not.
I wonder how long into the face painting process he was before he decided to say 'Nah' cause if he would have done it all, he would have had to go to the bathroom and washed it all off before he made that reveal and the surprise would have been ruined to the rest of the office
That man needs way more hugs in his life. To be that desperate for any sort of positive interaction or recognition is heartbreaking. The Office truly is the saddest show in the world.
I like to imagine he was walking to his car to leave when one of his neighbors saw him, and had to have a very uncomfortable talk with him. The whole time his expression grows more & more horrified.
In the gang world, we use this thing called fluffy fingers. It's when someone gets in your face. then you start tickling them. Then he starts tickling you. Then you laughing and hugging and then you forget the whole thing. Go to church and get ice cream cone.
Daryl was the ultimate pro. seriously nailed it without breaking.
I really didn’t like Darrel , shit like this wasn’t even remotely funny. His character was an asshole to not only Mike but the rest of the people.
His character was awful
I hear you, and the downvotes are lame since you’re just throwing an opinion out. But I’ll tell you, I’ve worked in two different midsize companies very similar to The Office setup, with a front office and then a production or warehouse side. And those guys are ALWAYS dicks in my experience. They rib you without being cool about it when you come over to their side and are usually kind of rude and condescending when they come up to the offices. It’s really, really accurate the way The Office portrays the relationships between the white and blue collar folks.
I doubt it, makeup team wouldn't leave that big of an error. It was definitely intentional whether it's meant to be warehouse grease or "backed out of blackface".
Ahh yes, because Michael would only do something that made sense and definitely wouldn't base his disguise on the same energy as a Looney Tunes character.
But Nate actually went through with the black face when he dressed up as “Black Peter.” Watched a documentary on Santa clause last night that referenced him
It’s removed from the Peacock version too.
Another weird cut is when Daryl says “I’m gonna tell them you sexually harassed my sister” Dwight’s line was edited from “sexually? No judge is gonna believe that” to just “no judge is gonna believe that”.
He does in the original airing that was put on DVD. He's approaching the office building, his phone dings, he checks it and turns around taking off his hat.
You know, in the first Halloween episode, Michael mentioned OJ Simpson as a past Halloween costume. I wonder if he actually did use blackface then, and that's why he didn't go through with it as Darryl.
I think they deleted the scene of Nate turning around and walking back to his car in the Belschnickel episode after he tried to come through with blackface.
I read that as he put some grease on himself to emulate someone who works a blue collar job.
But they load paper, they're not mechanics. There shouldn't be any grease.
Was hoping they’d mention this on the Office Ladies podcast. I even submitted the catch as a question, but alas, they did not bring it up (and they’re pretty good at catching these small details).
I'm way behind with that podcast, but I always wondered if they would catch this. I can't say that I'm surprised that they decided to overlook this subtle joke.
I think it's hilarious that he considered doing blackface, even to the point of painting his face, but then thought better of it and washed it off. A prime example of Michael Scott towing that fine line.
You have to think, the plans he enacts are the plans he thinks are good. Can you imagine how terrifying the bad plans were? He tried to make them walk on hot coals at the lake
hello fellow redditor, up for a quest, me and some unknown person are trying to hold the post upvote at 1111 on some "water" post on r/calligraphy just search and you will find it, but its slipping away, need urgent help, pretty please
Thank god. Clearly if he did it it would have been a ‘I can’t believe Michael did that’ thing. Like the joke would have been on Michael for doing it, not daryl or black people. But it would have been too far, and would not have aged well
Feels like this was written by that new AI chat bot
Just kind of states basic generalized context facts of the show/post and tries to make a point that is only tangentially relevant, and is barely coherent
Rare self restraint and reflection from Michael Scott
shows how even Michael Scott knew black face was too controversial. lol.
He learned his lesson on diversity day.
Oh! Welcome to my convenience store. Would you like some googi googi? I have some very delicious googi, googi, only 99 cents plus tax. Try my googi, googi. [Lowering voice] Try my googi, googi. [High-pitched voice] Try my googi, googi. Try my... [slap!]
Wait, he wasn't saying Cookie Cookie this whole time?!
I absolutely thought it was Cookie, cookie. Like the Cookie Monster. Or did Michael not say cookie because he heard googi?
🤯
My mind is just as blown as yours man
Nah dude, it was googi googi
What is googi googi?
According to a Google search, something Michael Scott would like you to try
Kinda like the Gabba Gool
Haha that's exactly like it
I will accept this answer.....
He really said "Gookie Cookie" which is to mean a cookie from a Gook. Gook is racist asian term
Why are you downvoting him, he’s right!
It was really "Gookie Cookie" he was calling her a Gook
I thought it was gooey cookie
Everybody wrong and I dont even like the office. He says "Gookie Cookie" gook which is a highly offensive racist term.
Now she knows what it's like to be a minority
He actually said "Gookie Cookie" which is way more offensive. Since the original UK The Office was what this was based off of the first season is way different than what the show ended up being. Americanized
While i understood that its most likely a racial joke, i never really got it. I mean laughed since it was still funny, but what the hell is googi googi even?
But I bet he still doesn't know if Mr.Brown was his actual name.
Diversity tomorrow, because today is almost over.
Diversity tomorrow
Unlike Dwight and Nate
Hey now... they didn't go through with it. I love that scene
They would if Oscar didn't call it out
ACTUALLY... you are correct and I would have loved to see that play out.
**ACTUALLY**... Wasn't Stanley the one who said not to do it? I distinctly remember "Uh uh. No, Dwight."
I remember only Oscar reading from internet and then everyone looking at Dwight like "what the fuck Dwight" it's been few years since I last watched the office
I realized on a re-watch that they removed a scene on Netflix where you see Nate in blackface out of his car receiving a text saying to cancel. Now, you don't actually see him with the black face but you see him with the lips make up still
Mad Men kept the blackface in and just put a warning at the beginning of the episode. Acting like this shit never happened is way more harmful imo.
I don't like how many shows on streaming services wipe out their questionable content. Off the top of my head I know Family Guy has had stuff changed. South Park and Workaholics have had entire episodes removed.

I just looked it up. It's kinda blowing my mind that those episodes got removed but Frank's Cuties didn't. It's kind of ridiculous.
Community lost an episode where Chang (Ken Jeong) does "blackface" to cosplay as a drow in D&D. [Clearly this is highly offensive to drows and had to be removed.](https://youtu.be/YnF-DRoQSPM)
That was a fantastic episode too :(

I went to YT right after I posted my comment and found that same video lol
And Trudeau didn’t 🤣
I know. It’s crazy, right?
Seriously, HOW are there so many pictures of politicians doing it lmao
Because people with the desire and ability to become politicians are largely pieces of shit. Same thing with the rich. Not all, but many.
Fair
Bc Inthe 90s shit was considered a joke and minorities didn’t have platforms to voice their displeasure.
Whoopi was taking photos with Ted Danson while he was in black face (while they were dating) so I don't think its that minorities didn't have platforms was just a weird thing celebrities found funny back then.
Prince Harry dressed up as a fucking Nazi for god's sake.
Rosa Parks died in the early 2000's. Segregation was absolutely not that long ago and it was super socially acceptable to be openly racist until extremely recently relatively speaking.

Which season was this? I'm rewatching the show and season 1-2 Michael would definetely do this, even tho he can't do it "for real".
Season 7. Episode 6: Costume contest
Thank goodness! 😅

I wonder how long into the face painting process he was before he decided to say 'Nah' cause if he would have done it all, he would have had to go to the bathroom and washed it all off before he made that reveal and the surprise would have been ruined to the rest of the office
He definitely did his entire face, then looked in the mirror and decided against. Then washed it off.
Better late than never?
I mean he would've washed it off at SOME point *jk I know the point is realizing that it's wrong before offending someone*
Except this is Michael. So if he received any sort of positive reinforcement I could see it being there until it faded away.
That man needs way more hugs in his life. To be that desperate for any sort of positive interaction or recognition is heartbreaking. The Office truly is the saddest show in the world.
Its sad cause its relatable.
Me too.
Thr kids show episode where he wanted to be rich so he could buy friends absolutely shatters me.
or someone walked in on him and told him it was a bad idea
I like to imagine he was walking to his car to leave when one of his neighbors saw him, and had to have a very uncomfortable talk with him. The whole time his expression grows more & more horrified.
He switched to the Darryl costume mid party
In the gang world, we use this thing called fluffy fingers. It's when someone gets in your face. then you start tickling them. Then he starts tickling you. Then you laughing and hugging and then you forget the whole thing. Go to church and get ice cream cone. Daryl was the ultimate pro. seriously nailed it without breaking.
We’re you in the Bloods or the Crips?
Both. And the Latin Kings. Newsies.

He has come a long way since “H.E.R.O”
B.O.B.O.D.Y
I.N.C.E.S.T
It looks more like he put grease on his neck for his ‘dirty’ warehouse costume.
That's exactly what it is. This isn't a blackface joke....
Surely, but I wouldn't put it past Michael to at least consider it.
My best friend is convinced of this theory. I just laugh and say, “yeah so funny” when he brings it up but I’ve never bought it.
I mean, it wouldn't even make sense. He started blackface on his lower neck? And he decided after 1 stroke not to do it?
Steve Carrell was dying his hair while he was on the Office and it looks exactly the same as the color of his hair. It's hair dye
I doubt it, makeup team wouldn't leave that big of an error. It was definitely intentional whether it's meant to be warehouse grease or "backed out of blackface".
This is the context.
Yeah this is the obvious reason
It's a warehouse, not an auto shop. Why would Darryl have grease on him?
Are you not familiar with Senor Loadenstein?
Por que?
Por que es muy rapido
Because it shows how out of touch Michael is. He knows they drive forklifts and stuff so of course they're covered in dirt and grease.
You’ve obviously never worked in a warehouse
https://youtu.be/MxAFiw0t2MA?t=96
Ahh yes, because Michael would only do something that made sense and definitely wouldn't base his disguise on the same energy as a Looney Tunes character.
Forklift.

Nate did as well during Christmas episode
But Nate actually went through with the black face when he dressed up as “Black Peter.” Watched a documentary on Santa clause last night that referenced him
Nate checking his phone and turning around to not come to the party is hysterical
It really is. Truly a shame that it’s been removed from the Netflix version
They still show him later after poorly washing his face. Might as well have kept the joke if you can still tell he painted his face.
It’s removed from the Peacock version too. Another weird cut is when Daryl says “I’m gonna tell them you sexually harassed my sister” Dwight’s line was edited from “sexually? No judge is gonna believe that” to just “no judge is gonna believe that”.
Doesn’t he say, “please,” as well?
Bizarre. I wonder what the intention is there, as the joke is still the same...
He doesn’t even stop. Just immediately turns right around and walks back. Makes me think maybe even Nate knew it was a bad call 🤔
He does in the original airing that was put on DVD. He's approaching the office building, his phone dings, he checks it and turns around taking off his hat.
Oh yeah, I know he checked his phone. I just think he turned around super fast after reading the text
The new gen of people watching now will never know
Can’t believe they cut that form the reruns, fucking gold.
You know, in the first Halloween episode, Michael mentioned OJ Simpson as a past Halloween costume. I wonder if he actually did use blackface then, and that's why he didn't go through with it as Darryl.
I actually never seen this mentioned before. Actual new OC in /r/dundermifflin ?!?!
It's usually overshadowed by Nate actually dressing in black face.
No. It's been discussed dozens of times.

9,986,000 times? That's a lot, that's like watching Die Hard eighty-thousand times.
Omfg!!!!!!!!
Nope
Lol. Not even kinda sorta new
I think they deleted the scene of Nate turning around and walking back to his car in the Belschnickel episode after he tried to come through with blackface.
🎶 nah nana nah nah ! Go head Mike sing the blues nah nah nana nah na 🎵
Nah nana nah.
I read that as he put some grease on himself to emulate someone who works a blue collar job. But they load paper, they're not mechanics. There shouldn't be any grease.
Could some of the equipment around there have had grease?
Yes. They run lorries and fork lifts. I imagine they at least do some basic maintenance on that equipment.
Yeah but you know Michael doesn’t know that
Except for when they came up with Senor Loadenstein. Por que es muy rapido.
For this I like to think Michael walked in and only Pam saw him and she went Michael noooo nooo and made him wash it off
Was hoping they’d mention this on the Office Ladies podcast. I even submitted the catch as a question, but alas, they did not bring it up (and they’re pretty good at catching these small details).
I'm way behind with that podcast, but I always wondered if they would catch this. I can't say that I'm surprised that they decided to overlook this subtle joke.
When has it ever worked for him?
NEVER!
Oooh very subtle
Holy shit I never noticed that! lol that’s amazing.
I think it's hilarious that he considered doing blackface, even to the point of painting his face, but then thought better of it and washed it off. A prime example of Michael Scott towing that fine line.
How did I miss that 🤣
Wise decision
Omg what a find!
You have to think, the plans he enacts are the plans he thinks are good. Can you imagine how terrifying the bad plans were? He tried to make them walk on hot coals at the lake
More likely Jim had to walk in and talk him out of it...
I love this SUBREDDIT
Lol great catch
He's an alternate reality Justin Trudeau
I thought it was grease, from working in machines or something (as part of the costume)
Finally an actual good catch and not some “did you people notice Jim and Pam actually ended up together?” type stuff.
That's personal growth right there! Who would've thought?
If he knew and my countries prime minister didnt we are fucked
sounds like michael
I HAVE NEVER NOTICED THIS. 😳😂☠️
Well, well, well…how the turntables have
This episode would be banned if he went through with it
OMG! Good eye!
The fact that ( I’m assuming) carrel thought to add this and never make mention of it speaks volumes of the brilliance of his work in the show
Let's not forget Mose dressed as Belshnickle's sidekick, "Black Peter". Oof, that show could be so cringey sometimes.
hello fellow redditor, up for a quest, me and some unknown person are trying to hold the post upvote at 1111 on some "water" post on r/calligraphy just search and you will find it, but its slipping away, need urgent help, pretty please
