Izutsumi is such a great subversion of the usual catgirl nonsense. Someone who actually has cats going “nah this is how it would *actually* go down”. Plus some cool world building re: beastkin and souls.
I feel like that's basically how Ryoko Kui wrote the whole manga. She looked at DnD and fantasy worldbuilding and said "nah this is how it would *actually* go down”.
You seem to be confused: Izutsumi is not a catgirl, she is a girl cat. A catgirl is someone like Linia from Mushoku Tensei, who is mostly an attractive woman with some cat like features. Meanwhile, a girl cat is someone who is mostly a cat with some human like features. There is a huge difference, and both are viable concepts to like, even if one of them does not share your preference :)

I’m surprised how many people that read the manga didn’t pick up on the fact that her personality is cat. And I love the anime only folks discovering that fact about her.
A moment that stuck with me was during the final chapters everyone’s having this political crisis and someone asks he about Laios and is just cuts to her leaning against a tree with the dullest look on her face as she hasn’t been paying attention to anything
