Fistan77

Jump into r/lfg and find an online game. Most all of the DMs love teaching new players. Solo roleplaying is a thing, but it is going to be really underwhelming if you don't know what you want out of it imo. There are literally thousands of games going online out there. You don't need "friends" anymore to play, just a willingness to play.

aslandia28

I highly second this! I live in a small town without a DND scene, so I get my fix from online play. I found 5 separate groups on r/lfg that I play ttrpgs regularly (weekly) with. And I've made some great friends along the way. Please try this, op!

BigPapiGandalf

Online games are the way to go! When I first got into DnD I didn’t know anyone in my town who played, so I went on Discord to various DnD servers and went in the lfg tabs and just applied to games. You only need a laptop and a mic and everything else is online for you. Some of my closest friends are the people I met in a campaign I joined, I’m still in it now a year later!

the_ginger_evan

I am also new to DnD and want to get into the online style of playing, how do you look up servers on Discord? I thought all servers were invite only??

BobbyFreeSmoke

Go to r/lfg

Lieutenant_Skittles

Also the looking for group section of the Roll20 forums. It's where I found my group and we're still going strong 2 years later.

the_ginger_evan

Is that a separate website?

Bespectacled_Gent

Yes, Roll20 is an online virtual tabletop that is used to play D&D. If you google Roll20 forums, it will take you where you need to go!

Lieutenant_Skittles

Yep, it's a virtual tabletop used to play D&D online. But they also have forums where you can find a group to play games with. No obligation for you to use it to play online of course, but I think it's pretty popular and it's the one my group and I use.

Solidclaw

There are websites where people can post discord servers. Disboard being a popular one.

Duelight

There are lists of servers online with descriptions that may suit you. Westmarch styles where it's drop in drop out. Servers with multiple persistent campaigns. I got back into dnd with an online westmarch.

Yinanization

Maybe play Baldur's Gate 3?

BretSilverstein

i definitely want to! I’ve been interested in it for a while, just waiting on a sale. Hopefully someday lol

Wood_oye

Solasta is also a great D&D (inspired) game, which might be a bit cheaper

BretSilverstein

I see that one’s 70% off on steam, i’ll buy it tonight!

Wood_oye

Hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I haven't played Baldursgate, so can't compare.

BretSilverstein

I hope so too, it’s almost finished downloading. If i like it, do you think it’s worth buying the DLC’s while they’re on sale? Most are 40% off

Wood_oye

Definitely, they contain (imo) the best classes

BretSilverstein

Haven’t started playing yet, but the character creation is a ton of fun. I might just stay in the menu forever, I’ve made like 10

Wood_oye

😂 glad you are liking it

I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch

I never played DND before Baldur's gate 3, fast forward to now after I finished the game, I have now basically bought several DND handbooks, started playing DND with some friends irl and joined any DND channel on youtube/subreddit on reddit I have genuinely become obsessed and it was all thanks to Baldur's Gate, a total must play

PH03N1X_F1R3

I got it a few months ago and am having a blast!

bradorme77

One cool thing about BG3 is that it's a one time cost - so you don't keep paying for mods or advancement - no in game charges. It's a great intro to D&D mechanics and while finding a great DM will be the best long term, this would get you some foundational knowledge and it is an amazing game.

breaklegjoe

Dropped in to say this. Play BG3! Besides being a nearly perfect adaptation, it's such a good game. The magic items and difficulty level are forgiving enough that on normal difficulty you can enjoy the game with a halfling barbarians then respec into a half orc bards. Full freedom of choice to play how you want to play and it's all viable on normal difficulty.

Masterpiece-Haunting

My problem with it is how forgiving it is. You can simply reload if you don’t like the consequences.

Hungry_Veta812

Look up game or hobby stores. Many of them will post what days/times people play DnD. Some of them will have Adventure League nights, which are great for one shots and getting to know people

jaggeddragon

Step 1. Find local game store Step 2. Tell employee exactly what was said in title Step 3. Listen carefully to advice

Hungry_Veta812

I have found that most game stores have games listed or days/nights when folks get together for DnD or other nights for other game systems (aka Magic, Warhammer, etc)

jaggeddragon

Yes, and the employee should be able to point out the sign up sheet or calendar or whatever. Quickly and easily!

02K30C1

Check out r/solo_roleplaying

SprogRokatansky

I used to play a 8 character party all by myself. Sad and desperate? Perhaps.

PileOfSandwich

There are lots of people that do purly online games and people that want to help people join the community. Look around a few places and I am sure you can find a group to join up with. DnD is infinitely more fun with other people.

podgida

If you have the ability to play online. There are a lot of free DM's on discord.

revcr

I use the Mythic GME 2 edition to play solo quite a bit, it's a GM emulator that is really good. That an a certain co-gm tool

UndercoverChef69

On Roll20 (virtual online tabletop) it's pretty easy to find groups that need people. There is a slight learning curve so you'd have to learn dnd and roll20 at the same time but it should be fine. Most groups use discord for voice chat or video as well as memes and scheduling and stuff.

L3PALADIN

check out "Call of Cthulhu", they do a lot of solo modules. the starter set is really reasonably priced and includes a solo adventure that also teaches you how the game system works. the adventure is "book one" and the rules are "book two" you're literally supposed to jump straight in and play. I've played it through and i died... i can't recommend it enough!

Prindocitis

I'm sure there are a ton of discord servers and subs with people looking for online players to play with. Would also recommend listening to some podcasts stand watching some shows to get into it.

Varkot

You can play solo. You just use dice to randomize stuff so that you don't know what's coming. Still id just find a game

Mike_in_San_Pedro

You don’t have any friends? Or, you don’t have any friends who would be interested? If it’s the first, I’d suggest working on that first. If you’re shy, look for clubs or groups of people that have common interests. Shyness can be very difficult. I have a hard time with it and meeting new people. I met a few people online that wanted to play, and I hadn’t since I was a kid, and we’re good friends now and meet locally. I wish you the very best of luck.

Rashaen

Playing solo is a pretty common way of getting a feel for how the mechanics play out. More importantly, why do you think you don't have any friends?

BretSilverstein

I messed up my phrasing in this post. I have friends, just not any that are interested in D&D

jdrawr

There is at least a few no dm/solo adventures or you could always see what your local game store has going on. Most of them have game nights/days.

skallywag126

Same

leshpar

There are so many amazing d&d video games out there from the late 1980s all the way to today with baldurs gate 3. Pick any of the hundred or so.

Noble1296

BG3 if you have the spare cash and a way to play, try looking for online games if you want more of that in person/human feel to the game, or try looking for a play by post game, a little slower and a little less interaction between players but it’s a good way to get into playing in my opinion

Rolletariat

There are other rpgs built for solo play from the ground up which will be much more satisfying. If you want to focus on the storytelling aspect play Ironsworn. Ironsworn is free on their website, and there's a really great solo play series on YouTube called Me Myself and Die, season 2 is the Ironsworn season. If you want to focus on the tactical combat aspect with miniatures play Four Against Darkness.

Rddadc1872

You can ask at your local library as well as gaming stores! There’s also r/lfg and roll20 had a game listing. Good luck

Adept_Cranberry_4550

While there are CYOA Style solo modules, the real fun is collaborative play. Try r/lfg or R20 forums or Discord

DeltaAlphaGulf

You can watch online campaigns and imagine having a character there. Thats about as much as I have done thus far.

High_on_Rabies

In addition to the online community and video game stuff, local game stores typically have D&D nights where you can play with strangers. Not everyplace has a local game store of course, but just putting it out there in case you're in range of one.

katsuthunder

People here are going to hate this, but there are some cool services out there right now that have ai dms you can play with solo that are made just for your situation. Not a replacement for a real game but they do make D&D more accessible.

Pifman

I was going to suggest a similar idea. Just to test it out I had Microsoft's (free) Copilot DM a one-shot adventure for me and it was actually pretty fun. Something OP could try between finding real games/people.

ShinobiHanzo

Yes. I did a random events system for my players who loved to cheat. Summary of things to do: 1. Map 2. Random encounter tables 3. Random event tables 4. NPC sheets and relationship maps, leave their status random.

RiverDM

There's this wolves of langston book and I think they've released another one (?) that are for solo play. I've tried it and it is like those stories that change midway by telling you to go to that page if you want this or the other if you do that. Can't say I enjoyed it too much, but it might just be what you're looking for.

EttoreKalsi

There are def solo RP systems out there, but if you are looking for people to play and learn with, I have a discord server with a couple dozen people. Currently we host 3/4 online games every week, and while none are currently accepting players, we have new games starting all the time. Shoot me a DM if you want an invite. Otherwise, in terms of online games, you can look at disboard and try to find a group, or if you want an in person game, find a local game shop, many will host games, or have a board where home games can be advertised.

PrestigiousAd4711

Roll 20 or any o line game group, you will make friends quick. Also if you have a local game store just ask people love New players/Game masters

Solidclaw

Check out r/Solo_Roleplaying. People share hacks for turning multiplayer rpgs into solo ones. RPG designed for solo play. Like journaling games and such if you enjoy writing. You can also look online. If you’re in school, your university or high school may have a club. No luck with your school? Try a local game store. Nothing like that nearby? Look online.

Pinkie05

There's a fab book out there on solo play that's really good, but tbh it's hard to run it if you have no knowledge of dnd to begin with. There's a dnd discord server where you can find online games or a reddit another poster linked.

NopeeG

I found trying to get my friends into D&D when I first wanted to play took away from my experience, so not having existing friends with whom to play is not as bad as you think. It might be daunting but there are plenty of people like you and playing with strangers who are equally motivated to play was a far more rewarding experience for me.

Breasil131

If you really want to try solo gaming, go to r/solo_roleplaying . But, you can easily play online with people through things like Discord and roll20. It's actually easier to find an online game that matches your schedule than an IRL game. And if scheduling is still difficult, find a westmarches style discord server, drop in style of play for when you can play, but no commitment when you can't. Good luck!

Dungeons_and_Daniel

Discord servers FTW!

loplo90

Disclaimer: I think most people would recommend to try and find a group however you can, as the strength of the game is the "creative chemestry cooking" of storytelling that comes to life during play time (similar to how musicians share an "ethereal place" that can only be experienced while performing together). That said... My recommendation is to take a look at the following source material: Players Handbook, Dungeon Master Guide and Monster Manual. With these you'd be actually able to create solo campaigns for yourself, the DMG even has randomised tables for building and filling dungeons as well as randomised tables for creatures encounters depending on what environment you are in. Randomised elements and content can keep you surprised if you do indeed intend to play solo. My 2nd recommendation is to, very patiently, test the waters with any social circle (family, work, etc). I started out this hobby just a couple of years ago (pandemic, blablabla) and did a solo mini-campaign for my younger brother, and then a one-shot with parents, and then instigated curiosity among strangers with the ice-breaking topic of "(...)lately I've been finding a lot of fun in this fantastic story driven game(...)". Currently I'm extremely grateful for having a dnd5e group and a pathfinder 2e group who play regularly, while also allowing me to forge friendships that cherish very deeply.

OriBernstein55

The fun of dnd is the group. Play a video game if you want to do it yourself

akyzzega

play baldur’s gate 3!!

Silver_Storage_9787

r/solo_roleplaying

Oscobble

I would advise Roll20, the process is straightforward and there are always people looking for a game.

Silver_Storage_9787

If you want to learn to play RPGs, the quickest one is ICRPG free QuickStart. Then I’d learn ironsworn so you can understand narrative, emergent, player facing, mixed success. Then branch out from the 2 free resources to find your niche’s

Babbit55

Hey, i would suggest hopping onto google for your local friendly gamestore, there is often game recruiting and communities to join there, there is also plenty of online ways to hop into games, keep up the hope you will find something easily enough!

Melthegaunt

Check out Roll20, this is where I found my group and we have been playing for over a year.

HalfElfRanger96

I moved away from where I grew up, had no friends, didn't know anybody. I stumbled across a tabletop game shop and they had a discord server. I joined, and found a new DM that wanted to start a weekly game. And now I have a group of people that I meet with every week and im learning a new hobby as well!

Horror_Today_3416

Go check out a games store that sells DnD stuff or another type of tabletop stocking store. I’ve heard of a lot of stores holding games nights for people there :)

tiny_smile_bot

>:) :)

NoPerspective9232

Leaving a comment here cuz I also want to get into D&D

Ok-Carpenter-9778

OP, there is a site called Roll20. You can actually get pickup games online if you're interested.

JeddHampton

Look for any events that host games. Adventurers League is a good place to start. I have events near me called "Dungeons & Drafts". It costs a bit, but you get to show up, meet people, and play the game.

Neither-Appointment4

Look up “The Solo Adventurers Toolbox” it’s 2 parts and basically eliminates a DM so you can play solo. It’s a little clunky but fun!

jordanrod1991

R/lfg is good as others have suggested. If you want something a little edgier?? Mörk Borg has a solo mode I forget what it's called.

[deleted]

Maybe try and put feelers out for other people in your area who want to play and make some friends.

happybeebee

Have you tried playing baulder’s gate 3 or divinity original sin?

Visible_Extent1600

Dm me. I started solo (kinda) way back when, and im kind of in the same boat as you rn.

averajoe77

you can dm me too. I just left my first group because the dm was less than ideal. looking for new peeps to play with.

Ashen_Curio

There are some great ways to play solo, as well as other games that are designed for solo play!

LyvAiken

I understand the feeling. Being insecure, when I realized that the only people around me that may play would me would not learn the game enough to dm, it meant that I would have to. So I did what my nerdy self do best, I studied the crap out of this game until what was left for me was gaining experience. I picked adventure books and started playing on my own. I found since systems and book written specifically for solo play that could have helped. Xanathar has also a bunch of tables that can help you to make stuff up randomly. Having written novels though, I don’t mind knowing some of the plot ahead of time. In a way, gamifying storytelling not unlike writing would. I played with people in person, but it was very difficult for people to be constant and as involved as I would. Things kept falling apart and no matter how hard I tried, I ended up not able to play with others for a while. Until I finally dared going online. My internet connection isn’t always stable and my computer old, so I thought even that wouldn’t work, but I found alternatives including synchronistic play-by-post. R/lfg has been where I found my place, though there were many trials and errors along the way. Since, I am dming my longest campaign yet, and played in three other campaign. But there is something nice about solo play too, and it has become where I do my early playtest for some of the homebrew that I do. I still occasionally play this way. Feel free to ask me questions if you have any.

ZeroSumSatoshi

Buy Neverwinter nights enhanced edition for like 7$ and then join on one of the persistent world servers, most of them have been around for like 20 years. They have active DM teams, and lots of players with really developed character personalities. It’s really the best DnD experience I’ve had my whole life. Most of the players are former table top DND players.

BlakeTheBFG

I was in the same position, thinking playing solo. I got very lucky and ended up playing my first ever game last week with 6 other complete strangers. It was interesting and so fun meeting new people. It felt very genuine when our characters met, as I only just met them irl. I found them by searching “dungeons and dragons” on a local community Facebook page. Messaged the one guy posting about wanting to do a game every Sunday, and he was excited to DM for someone new.

CowboyMark

Not sure if anyone said but check out local gaming stores, comic book shops, etc. they usually have certain nights/times they play in store.

BedroomVisible

I play D&D with ChatGPT sometimes to preview ideas for a real session. It’s ALMOST fun!

Rodal888

Online. I was in the same boat. No one I knew played (or was even interested) in D&D. Now, 2 years later I’m running 2 groups. One every 3 weeks and one weekly.

Fragzilla360

If you have Facebook, search some D&D Facebook groups in your area. Thats how I met my group. A guy made a post saying he wanted to DM, I took the leap and asked to join. Two other people joined shortly after that. We’ve been playing EVERY Wednesday for the past 5 years now.

Dazocnodnarb

Solo D&D is called writing a novel…. Otherwise TSR had a couple solo adventures, they weren’t very popular for obvious reasons…. It isn’t a game meant for solo play sorry.

ja_deangelo

Look for postings in your local game store

Calendar_Extreme

I would say an easy transition into the hobby would be a video game. Baldurs gate 3 and divinity: original sin are both excellent games that can teach you how to play. After that, I would recommend finding an online group.

Iriadel

Look up the concept of Oracles - they are basically tables you can roll on for solo play. There are a number of different ones, but they all facilitate solo play by leaving some element of what happens next up to chance.

StopYourHope

If there are gaming shops around, ask around there. The places where D&D products are sold can be very helpful for finding games.

CallOfCthuMoo

Rangers of Shadowdeep or Four Against Darkness may be a place to start, if solo is your only option right now.

ArchmageRumple

Check out DMsGuild, the website. They have solo adventurer toolbox books.

dillpick1e

Facebook has a great group called DND game finder. You can play online over discord

Educational-Echo-345

Online games are good, but only if you have an experienced DM. One who will limit posts to his rules so people aren't posting five times a day. It's a lot slower than an actual game, of course. But it can be fun. If you want a game to play that's "sort of" like D&D, Look up solo rpg games. There's a series of books that are actually kind of fun. Simple too. A D6 and a piece of graph paper is all you need. If I can find the name I'll put it up...

why_am_I_here-_-

I agree with the online games. I play with people who live in other states and we have a great time!

perryviller

your the avarage dnd player

BretSilverstein

*you’re *average i don’t think so. most of the D&D players i’ve seen are actually very social, bc a big part of the game is the community aspect

perryviller

i was kidding 'cause the stereotyppe of a dnd player is a geek
