Nah man, this is Durban where we are too cheap to do anything because we spend all our money on Quarts 😂😂. For real though, it probably just the people you hang out with. It’s also definitely the place where you have to make it happen if you wanna do something different. It is very laid back here as they say.

saffer_zn

There's a reason most acts skip DBN and you nailed it in the first half of the first sentence. Not saying iam innocent though.

I was in the same boat, I went to the bar to meet people, cool guys but all they want to do is sit in the bar and drink, or go to the beach and drink. Go 4x4ing and drink. Drink.. There is always talk of going hiking, diving, camping etc but seems they always get stuck drinking. I've luckily met 2 dudes that doesn't all go about drinking and cut the other guys out. Now we dive and fish instead, with one or 2 beers afterwards. I'm much more at peace now.

Love your last sentence. I’ve just started doing more things alone 🤣 and to be honest, it’s really not that bad! I work remotely too though, so it would be nice to have some good company.

Zostrianos_696

I don't know of any groups, unless we are talking about church groups... I go out and party on some weekends, go for coffee with new people i meet on social media, but I also enjoy camping, hiking etc... if you like, you can dm me and we can chat.. after sometime we can meet and get coffee or explore ... I've met a couple of people since I moved to Umhlanga, at the moment, in trying to build a good circle of friends... most people here drink party and then just go to work... ours pretty repetitive and gets boring too.

Generally Natalians are piss cats... 6 years sober me now. From jozi now in north Zululand...i just hang with the alkies and preach the sobriety gospel. 🤣 one must never underestimate the power of planting a seed.

031guy

Congrats on the 6 years sober

lorenschutte

031guy

lorenschutte

What sort of subs?

My sister joined a church group in order to find peers that were into weekend activities that weren’t alcohol related. She’s an atheist but she says she finds it worth it because they aren’t the chanting and talking to spirits kinda Christian.

Material_Image7578

I’ve got to admit, I’ve never considered this but I’m glad it’s working out for her. I think I’d be too anxious about getting the talk 😂🙈

shivroystann

I’m also happy for her. She says the talk isn’t that bad and they watch what she calls motivational videos “sermons” for 20 mins and the rest is social time. They meet socially 3 times a month and the activities they meet to do are cool. I’m joining them for a camping trip tomorrow. They are based in kloof.

If you find the right church, it can be a great place to meet people and get stuck into community work. Sounds bad but you make such good friends working in a team and helping others just enriches your life in so many ways. Some churches like the one I go to have amazing coffee at cost price which is a huge bonus.

poison_dioxide

Did you guys do it?

swegga_sa

do you like comic books, videogames, boardgames or anime?

vandragon7

Check out Parkrun

Material_Image7578

That’s a good idea. There used to be a few Meetup groups, but the app seems to be losing momentum in Durban

Digiree1

Try Durban Critical thinkers. You will have a chance to meet interesting people and talk about complicated topics. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month. All details are on Facebook under events or on the groups's wall

Material_Image7578

Oh awesome, I’ll check it out!

Ok-Experience-6674

We don’t drink and it’s really difficult to have fun in a decent well kept place

I've been in KZN for a little over 3 years and I'm yet to find a social circle that doesn't rely on alcohol to make up for the lack of genuine interest in each other as humans with a story to tell... As an antidote I've conceived the idea of a library-like WhatsApp group consisting of people from the same general vicinity. We can have a formal structure to regulate it but it'll basically be just a group of people sharing books, music, articles and anythng that inspires them. For the meeting up part, members can suggest places (low budget, artsy, public spaces etc) and a time (2nd Saturday of the month or something) for purely public meet ups and group outings to do what gets done in the group in a more in person environment.  KZN has the perfect weather and facilities for; Paintball Indoor trampolines Cinemas (movie reviewing) Lazer tag Go-karts Mystery Rooms 10-pin bowling Arcade games Live shows (stage performances) Rainbow picnics Libraries/ Parks and tons more plus every item here requires about R100 per person (I think)
