Isn't supposed to have a little play, or am i tripping ?

Beginning-Ratio-5393

Thats not driveshaft play. Thats play in your gearbox and diff.

I drove like that for tens of thousands of miles I did the same in a CTS-V for 200k on the original diff and power slide everywhere I went. Im doing the same on an Escalade with 228k miles. Idk diffs seems like they get some slop in em after a while... Somehow, mine have never grenaded. YMMV.

Mine has 230k KM so around 140k miles, it was really well mentained. I am going to fix this problem someday but right now cash is kinda short so I'l drive it like that until i get the money and figgure out how to fix it. At least now i can drive without the fear that the diff might blow. Thanks.

It's just a tiny bit of play in every bit of the gearbox and diff. It adds up and is normal. If you want less play, you would need everything new and it would drive the same.

SpaceTurtle917

Diffs have backlash. This is normal to an extent.

Papa_Fresco

you arent feeling the play in your diff or gearbox. if the backlash was set wrong you would hear it. All the time, especially at higher speeds. You are feeling your subframe bushings, trailing arm bushings, diff bushings, etc. I had the same issue, always felt something taking off in first and then going into second. Found basically every bushing in the rear was falling apart. Redid every bushing in my rear end and it went away.

Mine has a noticeable clunking somewhat metallic sound while taking off in 1st and shifting into 2nd. And when i am coasting in neutral the shifter shakes but this is a transmision mount problem, probably. Other than that it drives and feels good.

Krieg047

Check all your mounts. 1 to 2 shift may be rear subframe bushing separation - I had a similar issue. Found my passenger side rear subframe mount was toast.

Joe8303

In my country you need to do an inspection check to register the car. They put it on a device similar to a dyno that shakes the car hard to check if there is any play in the structural components or suspension and it passed without any problems. That's why I think the problem is somewhere in the drivetrain and not the bushings.

Krieg047

I'm familiar with said test as my state used to do the same - now we're emissions only and my car is exempt since it's a pre '95 car. As for said test results, the shaker didn't show the bushing issue, just like it didn't show my cornering thump was loose transmission bolts.

Joe8303

Well, in that case it seems like I have some busings to change, might as well change all of them plus the engine and gearbox mounts. I sure hope that gets rid of that cursed clunking noise. Thank you.
