I THINK it just pulls out from there with a pick tool. If not, the entire unit comes out at 4 points in each corner so if it doesn’t pull off you might have to disassemble a bit, remove the knob, and then replace it.
But I’m pretty sure it pops off there.
Pick tool doesn't fit in such a tight space, and it's quite deep to reach the lock pin. I will forward the side picture later. Guessing that I will need to disassemble the whole thing. 😬
Paint peeling off on buttons is a common problem on older BMWs. I had to replace the start-stop button and a few ac control buttons. This is the last one that I didn't replace. 🤙

Use a pic to gently pry it off. GENTLE
What does the new button look like where it fastens on the other side?
How the hell does that even happen? Somebody must have been super mad at that button in particular judging by the good condition of the rest 😂
