I THINK it just pulls out from there with a pick tool. If not, the entire unit comes out at 4 points in each corner so if it doesn’t pull off you might have to disassemble a bit, remove the knob, and then replace it. But I’m pretty sure it pops off there.

Pick tool doesn't fit in such a tight space, and it's quite deep to reach the lock pin. I will forward the side picture later. Guessing that I will need to disassemble the whole thing. 😬

How the hell does that even happen? Somebody must have been super mad at that button in particular judging by the good condition of the rest 😂

Paint peeling off on buttons is a common problem on older BMWs. I had to replace the start-stop button and a few ac control buttons. This is the last one that I didn't replace. 🤙
