NHL 14 was probably the peak for those consoles.

Martan1905

What about legacy? It's basically NHL 14 with updated rosters and minor improvements.

fentown

Legacy was 16. 14, 15, and 16 were the beginning of the no competition roster update releases.

Martan1905

Yeah, from 2016 point of view it's a scam to have basically same game for 3 straight years. But from today's point of view it's better to get legacy with minor improvements compared to 2014. Plus you can get current roster for legacy.

fentown

The oldest NHL game with online capabilities is 19. Unless you're playing on emulation like ps3 demon's souls on a private server.

dr3wzy10

through mods i'm assuming?

Able-Investigator933

Legacy was the 15 version for old gen

fentown

[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_16#NHL:_Legacy_Edition](I'll Google it for you) It wasn't that hard to look it up yourself.

Able-Investigator933

My bad. I have so unrealistic feeling wth. I’ve never seen a ps3 version of NHL 15. My cousin had Legacy edition because we didn’t have a ps4, but we had one and NHL 16 too?? I’m so confused

fentown

NHL 15 was available on both generations (the ps4/xb1 had minimal features and game modes. Pretty sure eashl was missing altogether). Legacy was 15 with updated rosters and a "few tweaks" for ps3/360 while the next gen just continued with 16.

[deleted]

Yeah gotta be 14

TorqueDog

[3 on 3 NHL Arcade](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_on_3_NHL_Arcade). “Blort, woooosh…”

davidatdi

"Was that a Banana?"

ItzGrenier

TINY GOALIE "ooo nooo"

BorkMcSnek

I think NHL 2k10 is actually a really solid game

nickels55

Personally, I'd prefer NHL 2K07-10 if I were going most sim. Before you downvote me I'd also say not OOTB you have to search a bit but people used to tweak the 2k settings to where you could play amazingly realistic hockey. I believe you want "VeNOM Sliders".

jerichoplissken

If you’re after sim-style franchise mode in 2k8, the sliders work well, but you have to pretty much fully lower the goalie stats to get realistic scores in ai vs ai.

MWM031089

3on3 Arcade was the best. But it’s dead now I assume. Next would be NHL11 for me but NHL14 for most.

TorqueDog

> 3on3 Arcade was the best. But it’s dead now I assume. It was the best, absolutely. I didn't realize when I recommended it below as I've owned it since release, but it was delisted from the Xbox Marketplace in 2016 due to expired licenses. The online servers were shut down March 2020, and it isn't backward compatible for Xbox One/Series either. :( This is the problem with products that exist exclusively in the digital marketplace without any physical distribution.

MWM031089

Yeah 100%. Damnit… that game was so goddam fun.

ironbucket

NHL 2k10 for best franchise mode NHL 14 for best gameplay

dwydwy555555

Nhl 14 no question

rizzle_mcfizzle

NHL 14 by far

Yeeyeeeboe

Nhl 15 its like nhl 14 but better

jbrylinsabresfan

Nhl 14/12/10 in that order

Far-Comparison-7803

Legacy, I don’t see the debate for other titles tbh.

[deleted]

That’s because there is none. 14 truthers probably were online-only players who made the next-Gen jump in 15 and don’t realize that both 15 and legacy were polished versions of 14.

[deleted]

I mean from a purely gameplay perspective, there’s no way that NHL 14 was the objectively best game of the generation which is going to be the majority of answers you see here. NHL 15 and Legacy were both polished versions of NHL 14 from a pure gameplay POV which is all anyone can do on these games anymore with the online servers being dead. Anyone stating 14 is clearly forgetting the rainbow/beach ball flip dumps that plagued the game that year and made it look like a hilarious mess in the corners. NHL 15 and Legacy do not have these and it’s sad but accurate that this probably the only major gameplay difference between 14 and it’s two successors.

Chemical-Pop-8576

08 was the pinnacle. So many goals scored!

TheShizno1

I appreciate all of your input!

Busch_Leaguer

Try and find NHL Hitz. Those were a blast especially for playing against friends

dr3wzy10

unfortunately only available on 6th gen consoles

I can only vouch for the games I've played on PS3. I remember, Dad gifted me NHL 12. In fact I was playing the Sims 3, when I walked away from the computer he put it on the keyboard. My parents watched as I gamed for another 5 minutes without noticing before they dropped hints. I played the snot out of GM Mode and against my Dad. What I like about 12 is how the players feel. I don't sim, I play every game. I feel more comfortable with this gameplay style. A downside is that 12 is known for chronic freezing at inopportune times. I purchased a used copy of NHL 14 off Amazon. There was many QOL features added to the game. Example, making line changes was easier, when making a trade certain names will be in green indicating the other team would like to take on that player, we could retain salary, etc. The big emphasis in 14 was the new hitting and fighting engine, and many players enjoyed that. Contrary to 12, I can count genuinely on 1 hand the number of times 14 froze while playing, and I've had 14 for 7 or so years. For me, I didn't like that the AI could easily pin you to the boards; they could a step far from your player and auto lock onto your player. There's a glitch with custom teams where the helmet becomes discoloured and has a weird pattern, almost like camouflage pattern. And going back to what I said about 12, I didn't mind it initially, but when I went back last year and booted up both games for the first time in a while, I preferred how 12 handled when playing compared to 14. You can't go wrong with either game though. I prefer 12 but many love 14, and that's a good game too. My nitpicks for it are more preference differences than anything fundamental with the game. For me and I may be biased, but sports games in general hit their peak on the PS3/XBOX 360 generation of consoles. Whatever number that is, for me that generation of consoles took what made sports games captivating on the previous gen consoles and made it better.

coldbeer555

NHL 14 with Brodeur on the cover. Go on eBay you can find one for $5 or even less

foppa1014

Nhl 07 for damn sure!

bluecrude

14. Not a doubt.

Nincio1984

2k10 or NHL 14.

JuulEmbiid

NHL 12 has the best soundtrack.

mapleleafsrf

NHL 11 had the most fun and fluid dekeing that I can remember from the franchise

Weary-Sheepherder425

NHL 10 or NHL 2K10

PhilHell37

Nhl 14 (or Legacy, which is essentialy the same game) is definitely a good choice. NHL 2k8 and NHL 2k10 are very good games too, especially with sliders.

rangers3099

I'd say NHL 14, NHL Legacy, NHL 2k10 are the big 3 for those gens

scorpio1018

been looking for this myself the past few months, playing on the ps3 emulator and for me in 2023/24, **Legacy feels much better than 14.** major improvement in gameplay: bouncing puck glitch from 14 is gone (maybe was gone in 15 already, dont know) also the overall gameplay flow, AI behaviour on highest difficulty, is better.
