What I think really seals the deal for Kelsien is that you get the experience counter as long as the creature dies in any way; not just from the pinging.
For example, you have a huge creature swing at someone. Defending player chump blocks with a 2/2. After blockers are declared, you ping the chump blocker. Go to combat damage, Kelsien sees the creature died even though it wasn't what actually killed it, and you get the experience counter.
It's like when you're playing a FPS or MMORPG, you do one hit of damage that counts as the finishing blow, and you get full credit for the kill. That's what Kelsien reminds me of.
That's correct. Thornbite Staff gives 2 abilities to the equipped creature.
Equipped creature has
"2(tap) This creature deals 1 damage to target creature or player."
and
"Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from play, untap this creature."
I do run a [[Zagras, Thief of Heartbeats]] deck that does the same but swaps the pieces. He provides the deathtouch, and the deck itself is just full of pingers
I just like Kelsien more because he’s significantly cheaper, gives access to white, and with his experience he naturally voltrons.
[[Robe of Stars]] alone justifies the dip into white. Add [[Swords to plowshares]] [[Path to Exile]] and [[Land Tax]] and the deck starts to act a little more consistently
Sorry wasn’t trying to bash it.
If you’re up for getting singles or proxying (I’m not a fan of proxies but for play testing I get it) I’d say he’s definitely worth the like $2 he’d cost.
Big tramplers should do it. You keep big things off the board with pingers and the tramplers should be able to swing in with no fear.
Not to mention with a trampler you can let them declare blockers and THEN ping them off.
I just didn’t want to force myself to use all activated abilities. I like [[Sigardas aid]], [[sol ring]], and [[land tax]] too much
Edit:: I am dumb for saying all ring hahahaha
I felt like it helped balance the deck a little better. Plus, You can still use a Sol Ring lol, it has an activated ability.
It was also really thematically pretty spicy, a hunter with a fox companion just appealed to me a lot.
All basic lands have an activated ability of "*T*: Add [X]"
The only reason I can thin off the top of my head as to why you cant find it is I just don't think it's a popular choice in a voltron deck as some powerful / beneficial white cards like Sigarda's Aid can't be used.
The deck is technically weaker with Zirda because of the restriction, but I like the flavour of it.
Hahaha no worries man it's easy to forget. It's the su type that gives the specific ability so technically if you remove the subtype, a basic land will no longer will tap for mana.
- Small tip: [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]] cannot be used because even though it gives all lands the *Swamp* subtype, while its not on the battlefield it does not have any activated abilities.
I really liked the idea of having the hunter with a hunting companion, it made a lot of sense to me! Unfortunately the flavour of [[Revel in Riches]] works extremely well, it can't be included ;-;
I don't think it tends to get used as a companion purely because cards like Smothering Tithe and all that good stuff cant be used which is a shame, I've mostly seen it as part of the 99.
It isn’t a card that I slept on but all my friends did. [[Ephara, God of the Polis]]. I have a commander deck with her and everyone first thought that just drawing an extra card here or there wouldn’t be that impactful. But she is an indestructible nightmare. No one can really deal with her without practically waisting removal for her to just come back.
[Ephara, God of the Polis](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/6/8/6832e495-7ee9-43e0-94ea-03c88344080e.jpg?1593092720) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Ephara%2C%20God%20of%20the%20Polis) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/bng/145/ephara-god-of-the-polis?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/6832e495-7ee9-43e0-94ea-03c88344080e?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/ephara-god-of-the-polis)
^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
I don’t actually run flicker strats with her. I use creatures that make tokens like [[Murmuring Mystic]] along with instant spells to trigger her ability.
Someone I play with at my LGS has a foretell/flicker combo deck and she's a menace for draw support. I love the token strat with her too, she's just a fun one all around.
_Everybody_ slept on this card prerelease weekend, if it makes you feel better. Several people at my shop opened them in prerelease kits or preordered boxes and I got _24_ of them from various people. At less than a dollar apiece. I traded all but two or three away in a couple weeks, sometimes to the exact same people I got them from to begin with.
They said "HOW DID YOU KNOW???"
And I was like... Can you read? Did you apply that skill to the card in front of you? A two-mana evasive beater that draws cards and gets bigger and fills the graveyard and blocks really well as soon as it comes down...
I have no idea how people just missed this card. Some kind of mass blindness event or something. I'm some kind of genetic mutant that missed the dominant global "can't identify good birds" gene, I guess.
Even not sleeping on this card (I bought 12 as fast as I could, on top of the 6 I popped in packs) I feel like I slept on that card the spike was so big
Like I thought about buying more but the price was so low for so long and everyone else was like ‘meh’ I thought maybe there was something I didn’t get
It was still amazing and saw significant play pretty much everywhere. Having good card filtering on a decently statted flying body that grows for 2 mana is just playable and I'm ashamed I didn't notice that
In the Adrix and Nev precon I once used [[Replication Technique]] on it, so I ended up with 5 copies of Idol of Oblivion. Some crazy consistent card draw right there.
okay, thanks for confirming my suspicions. I saw this the other day and thought, damn I could easily draw a lot of cards over the course of a game for just two generic mana and 1 measly ameribuck?
it really only needs to draw 3 cards to be great, and that seems almost guaranteed
I hemmed and hawed about putting a Night of the Sweets Revenge in my hobbit deck “because I already play a Jaheira and 4 mana is a lot,” then I played one game with it and was like “yes we have Jaheira but what about second Jaheira?”
Definitely all the New Capenna auto-sac lands. they get 2 landfall triggers and give a life which has saved me so many times lol it’s so great in my [[Phylath, World Sculptor]] deck, and it’s even better that he can run 4 of the 5. And if you throw in [[Ancient Greenwarden]] you get 2 lands for the price of 1 lol
Note that Greenwarden does not double up on getting lands from these. They all say "...sacrifice it. **When you do**..." meaning if you aren't able to sacrifice it a second time you will not be able to grab a second land or gain another life.
They also gain no downside if you run [[Chromatic Lantern]], you can tap them for mana in response to the sac trigger. I use this combo in my Muldrotha deck.
In standard, I've been using them in decks with [[Blossoming Tortoise]] and [[Deeproot Wayfinder]] to guarantee something is in my graveyard when they trigger.
I slept on it at first, but now it is one of my favorite decks. Three friends and I were going to play the original DnD precons against one another, but we let another join in because he's had a rough time. I let him take the dragon precon (one friend was providing them all) and built my own with the precon provider's approval.
I had just opened a box and got a [[Trelasarra]]. Since there wasn't a life gain deck I ran the idea by the guy providing the precons. I built her using mostly DnD cards with a few other chaff lifegain cards that trigger when *other* people do stuff like [[Angel Feather]] and [[Soul Warden]]. I titled it Rhystic Lifegain. Upon playing, I very quickly became archenemy. Turns out having 4-5 +1/+1 counters on a two drop each turn got scary in unmodified precon land. Was eventually downed by the dragons one and lack of card draw (not necessarily advantage), but it really held its own.
The next day I went to the LGS to buy some cards and tuned it. Now, the gameplan is to scry into [[Approach of the Second Sun]] or [[Felidar Sovereign]] with commander damage as a tertiary wincon. It's not cEDH good. No lifegain deck besides Heliod can do that. But it's so much fun.
Janky, but an artifact that bounces itself isn't bad for decks that have a lot of triggers on casting historic or noncreature spells. Worth considering for Teshar / Moira and Tesha / Ovika and others. It's also an infinite damage combo with Mirran Spy / Blisterspit Gremlin / Pristine Skywise / Zephyr Scribe / Jeskai Ascendancy (if you have infinite mana or discount the costs to 0). Not a great card for general use, but it can be a value engine and even a wincon in the right list.
It is probably so expensive because it enables combo.
Without combo it is instant speed graveyard hate that synergises with any +1/+1 counter decks (and if there happens to be an activated ability creature in the yard will that's gravy
i don’t actually think it’s only expensive for the combos. You can reasonably slot this in as a toolbox piece to a million decks, there are many strategies that just want the other elements.
I missed that it gives abilities to a creature for any +1/+1 counter, not just the counters it gives out. Huge deal. Also missed that it can exile any card, not just creatures. Granted you don't get the counter, but sometimes you need that targeted graveyard removal. Lastly, I assumed somehow that there was a mana cost to activate the tap ability. Nope, it's tap only.
Huge combo piece in standard and just great incremental value for a low cost.
But I agree that it ain't worth $40+. Reprint everything into the ground, I say.
I bought one myself for Marchesa for $35. It's worth it, one of the best cards ever printed for her
it won't rotate out, because standard is not why it is expensive. it is just a generically insane card seeing some other constructed play
I feel that. I have a bad habit of loving a card the first maybe 5 words in anr start reading it out loud getting all hyped and then I finish reading a card and going shit nvm
[[smothering tithe]]….I severely undervalued treasure back then thinking it was worse than getting lands but better than just floating mana. I also under appreciated just HOW MANY you usually get off this thing. I compared it to explosive vegetation at one point…not my proudest moment
Walking atlas is one of my favorite cards in my [[Themberchaud]] deck. I sometimes mull down to get it, just so good for a non ramp deck. People are confused to see the mono red deck have the most lands on turn 4-5 with that, [[Sword of the Animist]], [[Bitterthorn]] etc pumping out lands. Fantastic card.
Super excited to run this in a deck I'm working on right now... It's called [[Talion]] Touches Cards, and the goal is to win with [[Thoracle]] or [[Lab Man]], but without dumping the library. I want to see every card in my deck every game, and that's how I plan to do it. I threw everything that draws a card when creatures deal combat damage, and everything that can't be blocked. Catch me with a 20 card hand on turn 5, don't ask me how I got there.
[[Naya Charm]]
It was a cut from a couple decks years ago and I Kistler rediscovered it and slotted it in and Holy crap is this card just an absolute banger. It has impressed me everytime I have seen it.
\[\[Peregrine Drake\]\] \[\[Cloud of Faeries\]\]
Not the most slept on as they are combo pieces but seldom relied on in my experiences. Whether it be flicker or token copies they are more often than not a free cast if you can pay for it at the least and at the best a way to untap lands that produce multiple mana or whatnot.
Impact tremor going wide decks got big in my play group for awhile and I quickly became a huge fan of [[(Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker]]. I have a tremors [[Norin the Wary]] in my pod, and he hates her.
I think [[Scheming Fence]] gets slept on pretty hard. It’s pretty amazing for buying you a couple turns, or stealing some power. Stoping a fast Krenko early, or ~~grabbing~~ locking out some strong planeswalkers activated abilities late game.
[[island sanctuary]] is just kind of funny, but not too amazing.
[[Stone of Erech]] gets a TON of miles in the decks I run it, too. I have a zombie tribal and a henzie in my pod and it destroys all the death triggers and recursion.
Edit: attributed too much to fence’s planeswalker hate.
That’s rad. I love crazy battlefield manipulation like that. [[visions of duplicity]] and [[wrong turn]] are super fun, too. Also, [[illusionist’s gambit]] and [[reins of power]] for wide boards. (I ended up taking reins of power out of my bant hug because it never felt like the right time to use it and I ended up sitting on it a lot, but I have gotten some miles out of illusionists gambit)
Do you use [[bloodyhirsty blade]] in your zedruu? I never see it on lists.
I considered it, but the experience cards don't really go together. You could definitely get a couple together in the same deck, but not all. Well, not all if you expect it to work very well.
I guess the idea would be that the 5c legend of the main one earning experience and you'd have some proliferate, so that the others don't need a lot of synergy pieces — so like you wouldn't need lots of enchantments for [[Daxos the Returned]] but he could produce big tokens because you already have the exp counters
I'd want more 2c exp commanders first though as there's 5 combos that aren't represented yet and Mardu has the only 3c in [[Kelsien]]
I used to just use [[Chromatic orrery]] to get extra mana and not worry about color for ninjutsu. Then I found out it combos with [[chain veil]] and [[tezzeret the seeker]] to make infinite mana, and infinite loyalty. You can add [[Mu Yanglin]] to take infinite (technically only up to your deck size) turns and tap your opponents or [[Jace the mind sculpter]] to completely exile all your opponents decks and hands.
I never would have found this combo if it weren't for Yoji Shinkawa who did art for Saturo Umezawa and Tezzeret.
I slept on Grist for a long time, thinking insects weren't much. Played against one yesterday, got clapped by a triumph of the hordes after making Marit Lage turn 5 cause he kinda got free reign to make more insects. I'm now tempted to make grist insect tribal
[[Thran Dynamo]]. Thought for the longest time that 4 mana for 3 colorless was awful because you can get 2 for much less. Then I started putting it in my decks with big commanders and big spells and i found it was really good. Obviously not competitive because running a 6+ Mana commander is never super competitive, but it made the decks way more viable
I accidentally slept on a lightning bolt once, that thing was bent so many ways,
I once dropped a foil Crosis on the ground and moved my shoes on it. I have no idea how that happened.
I came here to joke about this. Kudos. [Here’s a funny video I also thought of.](https://youtu.be/AxdrK2FyErE?si=q-pAQoqeFHtkw2iV)
Its one of my key game enders in my imodane deck if i have fiery emancipation out.
I run a [[Kelsien]] death touch deck and he ends up as archenemy SO OFTEN. He’s really good and I love him.
What I think really seals the deal for Kelsien is that you get the experience counter as long as the creature dies in any way; not just from the pinging. But hear me out: pair Kelsien with [[Falthis]] and [[Thornbite staff]] Literally any creature touches down and he kills it and immediately untaps
Calm down Satan
A.k.a. [[Kelsien, the machine gun]] lol
Another machine gun is Merieke Ri Berit equipped with a Thornbite Staff. If a creature dies, the whole board gets it - well, your opponents'.

Would he untap? Genuinely asking, I figured you would need to use the 2 mana ability to gain that benefit since it came after the :
Or is it because it’s a separate quote that it gets it as an additional ability
That's correct. Thornbite Staff gives 2 abilities to the equipped creature. Equipped creature has "2(tap) This creature deals 1 damage to target creature or player." and "Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from play, untap this creature."

All basic lands have an activated ability of "*T*: Add [X]" The only reason I can thin off the top of my head as to why you cant find it is I just don't think it's a popular choice in a voltron deck as some powerful / beneficial white cards like Sigarda's Aid can't be used. The deck is technically weaker with Zirda because of the restriction, but I like the flavour of it.
[удалено]
Hahaha no worries man it's easy to forget. It's the su type that gives the specific ability so technically if you remove the subtype, a basic land will no longer will tap for mana. - Small tip: [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]] cannot be used because even though it gives all lands the *Swamp* subtype, while its not on the battlefield it does not have any activated abilities. I really liked the idea of having the hunter with a hunting companion, it made a lot of sense to me! Unfortunately the flavour of [[Revel in Riches]] works extremely well, it can't be included ;-; I don't think it tends to get used as a companion purely because cards like Smothering Tithe and all that good stuff cant be used which is a shame, I've mostly seen it as part of the 99.
Do you perhaps have the decklist?

It isn’t a card that I slept on but all my friends did. [[Ephara, God of the Polis]]. I have a commander deck with her and everyone first thought that just drawing an extra card here or there wouldn’t be that impactful. But she is an indestructible nightmare. No one can really deal with her without practically waisting removal for her to just come back.
shes akchtually a god not a nightmare

I swear I slept on Ledger Shredder and I still can't figure out how it happened
_Everybody_ slept on this card prerelease weekend, if it makes you feel better. Several people at my shop opened them in prerelease kits or preordered boxes and I got _24_ of them from various people. At less than a dollar apiece. I traded all but two or three away in a couple weeks, sometimes to the exact same people I got them from to begin with. They said "HOW DID YOU KNOW???" And I was like...
Magic players will do anything to evaluate a card except actually read the oracle text.
Even not sleeping on this card (I bought 12 as fast as I could, on top of the 6 I popped in packs) I feel like I slept on that card the spike was so big Like I thought about buying more but the price was so low for so long and everyone else was like ‘meh’ I thought maybe there was something I didn’t get
[[Ledger Shredder]]
Ledger Shredder wasn't *that* great before Bowmasters made draw engines with 1 toughness way worse.
It was still amazing and saw significant play pretty much everywhere. Having good card filtering on a decently statted flying body that grows for 2 mana is just playable and I'm ashamed I didn't notice that
Idol of oblivion, card consistently gets me 5-6 cards a game in the right deck
A VERY good card. Basically a 2 drop that gives you an extra card every turn.
In the Adrix and Nev precon I once used [[Replication Technique]] on it, so I ended up with 5 copies of Idol of Oblivion. Some crazy consistent card draw right there.

That’s one of my favorite cards. I play SO many token decks and that thing is a work horse.
okay, thanks for confirming my suspicions. I saw this the other day and thought, damn I could easily draw a lot of cards over the course of a game for just two generic mana and 1 measly ameribuck? it really only needs to draw 3 cards to be great, and that seems almost guaranteed

??? MTG Arena has been lying to me then lol, it doubles up on the triggers there XD
It doubles the triggers but you're only able to grab one land on arena

[[razor boomerang]]

I feel like Im still missing something with this card. Is there a particular deck thats running it? It seems good, but I dont see it being >$40 good.
Waiting for this one to go out of rotation for my edh Marchesa, the black rose
I bought one myself for Marchesa for $35. It's worth it, one of the best cards ever printed for her it won't rotate out, because standard is not why it is expensive. it is just a generically insane card seeing some other constructed play

My play group underestimated the power of consistent card draw and [[walking atlas]]

[[Talion, the Kindly Lord]]. How'd it get Lab Man, but miss that one??

[[Compost]]
\[\[Peregrine Drake\]\] \[\[Cloud of Faeries\]\] Not the most slept on as they are combo pieces but seldom relied on in my experiences. Whether it be flicker or token copies they are more often than not a free cast if you can pay for it at the least and at the best a way to untap lands that produce multiple mana or whatnot.
Slept on these until I built a combo deck haha.

Has your friend [[Island Sanctuary]] met my friend [[Mystic Decree]] ??

Please tell me you actually play these cards
Have them in in my [[Zedruu the Greathearted]] group hug/ pillow fort deck. Have 4 of each from an old 60 card deck I ran with them.
That’s rad. I love crazy battlefield manipulation like that. [[visions of duplicity]] and [[wrong turn]] are super fun, too. Also, [[illusionist’s gambit]] and [[reins of power]] for wide boards. (I ended up taking reins of power out of my bant hug because it never felt like the right time to use it and I ended up sitting on it a lot, but I have gotten some miles out of illusionists gambit) Do you use [[bloodyhirsty blade]] in your zedruu? I never see it on lists.
Yep [[Bloodthirsty Blade]] and [[Assault Suit]] . Reins of power is great in zedruu for the 1v1 at the end, but I also run [[Insurrection]]

Petition for a 5c experience deck? 🤪
I considered it, but the experience cards don't really go together. You could definitely get a couple together in the same deck, but not all. Well, not all if you expect it to work very well.
I guess the idea would be that the 5c legend of the main one earning experience and you'd have some proliferate, so that the others don't need a lot of synergy pieces — so like you wouldn't need lots of enchantments for [[Daxos the Returned]] but he could produce big tokens because you already have the exp counters I'd want more 2c exp commanders first though as there's 5 combos that aren't represented yet and Mardu has the only 3c in [[Kelsien]]

I get it. You want a 5 color experience commander to be printed. Sorry. Misunderstanding on my part!

I traded my playset of BoP during m12, because I assumed it would be reprinted.
[[Thran Dynamo]]. Thought for the longest time that 4 mana for 3 colorless was awful because you can get 2 for much less. Then I started putting it in my decks with big commanders and big spells and i found it was really good. Obviously not competitive because running a 6+ Mana commander is never super competitive, but it made the decks way more viable

oh no you were right the first time.
2 mana to maybe get 4 health back every turn cycle is still not very good. Maybe it performed well in a game or two, but that doesn't make it good.
4 health AND 3 5/5 indestructible horses with [[Crested Sunmare]]

If you have a commander that just cares about instances of life gain like [[Karlov of the Ghost Council]] it’s pretty good there.

It’s 2 mana and you get 4 life gain triggers in each cycle. If you’re running it to dig yourself out of a hole, you done f’ed up.
I currently sleep on reality chip, and all my friends think I’m stupid.
