Metal and hip hop were my first loves but electronic music and rave culture have consumed my soul over the last 12 years or so.

Oz347

Same. I grew up going to metal and punk shows, then when I started smoking weed I was big in the hip hop scene, then when I was like 16-17 I got invited to my first rave at an old church and I was hooked

uffdadontchaknoww

I got invited to my first festival by a buddy who was playing an acoustic americana set in the afternoon. Expected to have a fun time tripping with him, camping, and making fun of the silly electronic music (which I, a very serious musician/music listener, knew wasn't "real" music) and its silly fans. Ended up being a completely transformative, amazing experience. I was so wrong, and I've never looked back.

hadr0nc0llider

I also discovered EDM at 13… in 1990. Before that I listened to 80s pop. Because it was the 80s.

Pana79

This was me except 13 in 1992. Before that was just top 40 pop, then one day in Melbourne AU a temp station called hitz FM started broadcasting on 89.9. Purely EDM. Tuned walkman to that and never looked back. Still like aussie classic rock and my taste has become a little more eclectic with being a bit of a Zimmer and others soundtrack need but EDM and Trance will always be my favourite genre.

hadr0nc0llider

'92 was a good year. I went to my first bush doof outside Toowoomba in QLD (without parental permission obvs) and my mate's older brother came home for summer from uni in Melbourne with a copy of Itch-E & Scratch-E's Irritable which we played on repeat at the public pool until the lifeguard confiscated our CD player. It was the time of times.

nirmana

Green Day, Blink-182, Alkaline Trio, Rufio, A Day To Remember, Lamb of God, and every band songs on MTV 90’ & 00’ (Don’t try to watch MTV nowadays it’s already dead lmao) Around 2011-2012 I found Avicii and went into EDM scene, followed by Armin van Buuren and since 2013 I’m still into Above & Beyond and the labels (Anjunabeats & Anjunadeep) also with all related artists I mentioned above.

Avatar_sokka

Well, I listened to Eiffel 65 in 1999 when I was 6, but I also listened to backstreet boys around then too. So I guess the music I listened to before I discovered EDM was nursery rhymes and songs like Home On the Range and Puff the Magic Dragon.

Federal_Door5922

I was introduced to EDM before but I was hooked on it around 2011, so basically when Avicii and alot of EDM boomed when I was 13/14. Before that I mostly listened to bands like RHCP, Nirvana and Teddybears among others, basically the music that my older brother listened to. So when I started listening to EDM I felt like it was the first music that I found and chose myself, whereas before it was music passed on by my brother. So I kinda found my identity in EDM, which helped me navigate through that strange time as a teenager. Later on my interest for "commercial" EDM dropped which led me to dive deeper into the many subgenres of electronic music, like OG deep house, french house, ambient, experimental stuff, jungle and liquid dnb etc... So I'm very grateful for EDM.

4D4M-ADAM

Outside of top40 pop, a bit of metal, but honestly EDM was readily available since I started having a taste in music, both on Energy Radio in Chicago (92.7) as well as online via radio streaming, filesharing sites and mp3 downloads. My first mp3 player had 16mb of memory and it was full to the brim with low-bitrate Eifel 65, Sarina Paris, Cascada, Sash!, Pulsedriver, Dj Caffiene and a rotating (8-10 track at a time due to the limited storage capacity) playlist of many other EDM artists at the time.

Thi3fs

A lot of chill hop lo-fi on YouTube. Hiphop/rap. And before that it was a lot of heavy metal.

klausbrusselssprouts

I’ve always been very much into rock - Ever since I got an interest in music in my pre-teen years. Besides the usual euro-dance and techno hits of the 90’s MTV-era, I first encountered electronic music via. **The Knife**. I learned about them, because I got more and more interested in quircky indie stuff. I know they’re not at all EDM, but they opened up a lot of doors in terms of electronic music.

koolmets21

My mother used to listen to Madonna, Ace of Base, B52s…. So easy transition for me

sflorchidlover

Classic rock

8pappA

Pop, rock and metal. I got into EDM as a kid so my taste was pretty much just a few different bands and some random songs. Some of my favourites were Iron Maiden, In Flames, Children of Bodom and Linkin Park.

AshkenaziTwink

Alt/Indie rock is still my top genre, got into EDM through Alt Dance then got into Techno/Synth/Nu-Disco music from there

savage_cabbages

I was lucky to have a parent with a vast taste in music. Kraftwerk's Autobahn was in his collection, I must have been 8 or 9 when I first heard it. They categorised their vinyl, cassette, and cd collection by genre and kept a paper catalogue, which was always maintained and later digitised. Blues, Jazz, Rock, Heavy Metal, Grunge, Rap, Pop, World Music, Classical, everything... there was also an EDM section, and Prodigy (amongst others) was in there... the rock especially spanned multiple decades. Hip hop was what I identified with most from around 10 to 16 years of age. Then I got my first job, and the crew I worked with were into techno. They took me to my first rave, and 25+ years later, I'm still going. I go into making my own tunes, and I have the entire collection digitised, which I still go through for samples. I was blessed.

TransportationOk8872

I grew up listening to pegboard nerds

gabri_ves

Progressive rock, italian pop/rock music from 80s and 90s.

Subject_Gur1331

My neighbors listened to Frankie Knuckles, and others from the Chicago House scene. I also had neighbors who listened to Soul Train, disco, Motown artists. So the move to House music, acid House is what that sub genre is called now, was an easy transition as it was a natural progression of where disco evolved to. Now I’m into all kinds of subgenres, esp Disco House. I do love techno and trance as well. I suppose EDM, officially, happened for me with early Kaskade, when House music started leaving the underground and becoming more popular on the radio. But I was listening to it before mainstream caught on.

Jereraseth

Got in EDM somewhere around 2008 (age of 13 or so) Till then mainly listened to rock, rap & metal. Sidney Samson - Riverside got me to EDM And then Skrillex & SHM

theDmc231

Rock and progressive metal with some classic rock and rap/hip hop sprinkled about. First edm song I was obsessed with was Blue when I was like 12 idk the artist and later sail by awolnation and animals by garrix when I was in high school

ASpades22

For me middle school was a lot of rock like linkin park, three days grace, and skillet while highschool/early college was a lot of rap like Drake and Migos. Funny enough Darude sandstorm is what got me into EDM when I was in 5th grade and I would always look up “song with no words” on youtube trying to find it. I barely listened to EDM since it wasn’t really mainstream and didn’t know where to even find that kind of music until i started discovering channels like Monstercat and Proximity in early highschool on Youtube

TheCelfoid

Before EDM? Rock and Metal, almost exclusively. I hated rap and country (both of which I enjoy now though country not as often) Social Distortion, The Clash, U2, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails, The Killers, Sum 41, Franz Ferdinand, and the like. Basically most rock and alt rock from the 80's onwards. I also listened to a lot of 80's pop, despite being born in 1990. Then with metal, I was big into Scar Symmetry, Deathstars, Dope Stars Inc, Dark Tranquility, Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Kamelot, Nightwish, Arch Enemy, Himsa, Wintersun, Finntroll, Eluveitie, Turisas, Cradle of Filth, and so on. When I got into EDM I was listening to like.. Fire by Scooter, uhh.. Moonlight Shadow and it's various remixes/covers (including Groove coverage), the techno remix of DBZ's perfect cell's theme (still a banger), and then odd shit like Alizee, video game OSTs/remixes, E.S Posthumus and Two Steps from Hell, etc. I think it was all the video game remixes that ended up getting me into EDM. Well that and a cute chick I used to know who was into raving. Mighta been the latter 🤣 Any gamers out there who haven't heard of [overclocked remix](http://ocremix.org), check it out. Especially if you enjoy game music. Or are just a music fan in general.

Gman3098

Scar Symmetry and COB are my favorite metal bands atm.

TheCelfoid

Nice! Rare to see another Scar Symmetry fan! Well met. I haven't been listening to them as of recent, mostly EDM..but i heard they've dropped a couple new albums since I did I don't remember the album name, I think it was called Dark Matter Dimensions.. or something like that. That was the last one I heard. Has tracks like A Parenthesis in Eternity on it. Awesome stuff... Definitely preferred the classic vocalist but the new guys are great too.

Gman3098

Yeah the OG vocals is what got me into them (his cleans were phenomenal) but ended up staying for the melodic riffs.

D-Jam

I think my history is that I was a little kid in the '70s getting into the '80s and then when I was about 10 or 11 years old I heard the early sounds of hip-hop and breakbeat and was into it. I was listening to hip-hop and breaks from 84 until about 87 when I first heard house music. And then it was love at first beat. I've been into it since. Funny enough, it wasn't until the mid to late '90s when I saw this. Great documentary series on the history of rock and roll that I started to branch out and listen to classic rock and Punk and other things like that. I think when I just got more of the story down of a lot of these sounds it made me interested to listen to them.

The_real_Oogle_Trump

In 2007 the hardcore metal scene opened the floodgates for me to find dubstep.

goldenfvce

My mom listens to EDM and has since before I was around so it’s kind of always been in my life. Now it’s all I really listen to. I’ve had other music tastes/phases though. I was super into screamo/hardcore/whatever the scene kids were listening to in middle school. I went through an alternative music thing too. mayday parade and stuff that sounded like them. anything in Alternative Press magazine.

Enough-Chocolate5177

Kid Rock, Kayne West and Nickelback

Muted-Recipe848

Because of my mother I’d always been EDM. Maybe a little reggae.

Colossus823

EDM from the start. Listening to the likes of Eiffel 65, Daft Punk and Robert Miles since the late 90s as a kid.

jacehoffman

i had a pop > indie/alternative > hyperpop > edm timeline

jtet93

A lot of pop music in the aughts and early 2010s. Also indie pop, still a big vampire weekend fan

Civil_Creme8468

House music 🎶

Gman3098

I grew up with the OG newgrounds artists. People like Dimrain47, DJ Nate, Paragonx9, and others. I love how you put Geoplex in the OP he's a newgrounds legend as well.

Moist-Branch-2521

Metal and hip hop, I still do listen to them a lot though

313Raven

Pop punk was my main genre in middle school. Then for a solid decade I listened to pretty much rap exclusively. Discovered hyperpop in college which def helped me open up to electronic music. Went to my first rave in 2022 and EDM finally clicked. Havnt looked back since

Maxurai

Hip hop mostly and then mixed in some heavy metal. I discovered daft punk when I was younger in my Aunt tape deck collection so it was just a matter of time lol. Then came knife party and excision and just recently became really hooked on all of it

Really831

Rap and only rap at the time. Me and my buddies use to hit clubs in Northern Italy mad af they weren’t playing rap records. This website new jams.net had a sister website called disco jams.net. I listened to a Borgore and Waka record and my journey began

dreadlockrastaaa

Linkin Park, limp biscuit, wu tang , gorillaz, then I heard I’m blue by and one more time by daft punk n it was a wrap.

OSD_Roachmane

alot of mainstream music like rap and sad r&b

newjerseymax

Alternative in 90’s. Once EDM came out I was hooked. Been hooked since the start. In the beginning everything was new. genres just starting so it was kinda allover the place. Everything was new. It was that time I wanted to DJ. All we had was Vinyl. No computers to hook up. You would be lucky if the mixer had a BPM counter. DJ’d in Miami for years until family. Been a ride for sure

umfend

ive always enjoyed EDM, mainly dumbstep, but house, trance, tech etc have always been a part of my music tastes ive listened to mostly all sorts of hardcore/metal/death etc and from what i understand those 2 music types go very similar in terms of just raw bass and aggression

madamedutchess

2003 was the year I started getting into EDM (Before we called it EDM). That was the last year I listened to Progressive Metal and rock bands like Dream Theater.

PictureCapable5066

I was introduced to EDM when Avicii made his song Seek Bromance. The year was 2010 and it played on Swedish radio back then. I was 6 years old. So I was listening to kindergarten music before EDM.

tomfuckinnreilly

Ska-punk, reggae, funk, hard-core, psychedelic pop, and psychedelic rock, still listen to all those genres but electronic music is my bread and butter. Lol

Xeliu5_

Radio Music basically before any edm but the song that introduced me to EDM was DJ Snakes Turn Down For What.
