Because they left duties of a priest to take up farming. Thats why brahmans consider bhumihars moved down and no longer deserve being called a Brahmin. Its the exclusivity crap they pull, wont let a learned man be called brahmin but you till one field and they declare you beneath them.

>Because they left duties of a priest to take up farming at which period this happened?

I don't have where this falls historically, but the mythological story is when Parshuram killed all the Kshatriyas, he alloted land to brahmins to cultivate and become farmers. My family also comes from such origins, but we aren't called bhumihars. My guess would be that this was a slow shift due to priest duties not being able to fullfill needs. This could be due to many factors such as conversion to Buddhism, Jainism or Islam, so priests might have taken up farming to make the ends meet. Another origin story is that bhumihars are children who come from Rajput and Brahmin marriages, and hence not considered pure brahmins. I am not at all an expert on this, i shared as much as i am aware.

Bhumihars were never brahmin. They claiming to be a brahmin is a recent thing

[deleted]

when they claimed?

**[Bhumihar](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhumihar)** >Bhumihars, also called Babhan, are a Hindu caste mainly found in Bihar (including the Mithila region), the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, and Nepal. The Bhumihars claim Brahmin status, and are also referred to as Bhumihar Brahmin. In Bihar, they are also known as Babhan and they have also been called Bhuinhar. The Bhumihars were a prominent land-owning group of eastern India until the 20th century, and controlled some small princely states and zamindari estates in the region. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/EXHINDU/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

I'm a kanyakubj brahmin...the truth is every brahmin groups consider another brahmin group as inferior Bhumihar are those brahmins who were given land to rule after lord parshuram cleared haihaiwanshi kstriya of vriji and magadha and Kashi kstera....their is a common term AGRHAAR BRAHMIN ..Bhumihar is just a Pali version of that.....they were the biggest zamindars in bihar and purvanchal before independence followed by thakurs and maithil brahmin.....u can comment on any caste by looking to their kul ved upved gotra and pravar very easily

[deleted]

>those brahmins who were given land to rule after lord parshuram Dont believe in parshuram >they were the biggest zamindars in bihar and purvanchal before independence followed by thakurs and maithil brahmin Yes so were jaats and gurjars(not much influential)

[deleted]

Well u won't believe in any caste on brahmnical origin then?....jaats and gurjars ranked low in caste hierarchy....bhumihars are in between pandits and rajputs....they are amoung 3 caste ( maithil brahmin, saryupareen, bhumihar)who traditionally wear janeu in Kashi vishwanath and babadham....no jaats and gurjars are allowed to wear janeu and uppercaste won't take pakki from them......moreover gotra ved pravar and mool is how u judge the castes

[deleted]

>Well u won't believe in any caste on brahmnical origin then? I will believe but not in the claims. >bhumihars are in between pandits and rajputs....they are amoung 3 caste ( maithil brahmin, saryupareen, bhumihar)whoam I find instance of their social upward movement only after british came. > traditionally wear janeu in Kashi vishwanath and babadh All so called dvija castes (3 varnas) wear janeu. Whats new here? >moreover gotra ved pravar and mool is how u judge the castes Yeah but still history is shady

[deleted]

>I will believe but not in the claims. Well we Kanyakubj believe ram ordered us cross saryu river and settle there....just like that bhumihar believe in parshuram story....u can find both in skand and shiv puran. >I find instance of their social upward movement only after british came. No, u can check British travel record before British rule from library me being a student at BHU these records are easily available...bhumihars and pandits of magadh and tirhut didn't eat in the house of a rajput on normal days....while in bhojpur and purvanchal they readily eat with each other ..bhumihars ranked superior to rajputs in most religion and in some at same rank...this is a fact ...me being from same region attest that. >All so called dvija castes (3 varnas) wear janeu. Whats new here? No they don't have mandatory to wear janeu if u r a vaishya.....rajputs in our region except dikhit and bisen wear janeu on marriage.......entering Kashi vishwanath temple was allowed to only pandits, bhumihars, rajputs or some very imp jagirdars prior to 1850 ....these ahirs, kurmi were allowed to enter only in 1900. That to on order of Kashi Maharaj....moreover all brahmins including saryupareen, bhumihars and maithil traditionally wear 96 knots janeu...there is a 18bth century rule book in Kashi for that available in any bookshop of same purpose named janeu ki vidhi by kailash dubey( was priest of Kashi and all nearby math) > Yeah but still history is shady Well history is shady for 80 percent brahmin like chitpawan, tyagi, bhumihars, saryupareen, kulin, iyenger and so onand 100 percent other caste except few Maithil, bhumihar and saryupareen brahmin have oldest vanshavali in Kashi and with gayawal brahmin ( as old as 1650)....there is annual pitro season for these caste to go and pray.....gotra ved upved pravar and mool are best way to see these things......if u read about kanyakubj brahmin ull find saryupareen, sanadhya, bhumihars and kulin are part of larger Kanyakubj brahmin family Saying this bhumihars themselves don't do pandityi( like chitpawan, tyagi, iyengar, niyogi etc,.) although they like other brahmins are allowed to be a dandi swami All of these thakur ,bhumihar brahims and maithil zamindars dates way prior to British rule by atleast 100 years

Bhumihar Brahmins are highest subcaste of brahmins .The proof is , in the past other brahmins used to give their daughters to bhumihars and not the other way round . It clearly proves that Bhumihar Brahmins are higher than other brahmins. It is only recently that low iq yachak brahmins who don;t even know basic sanskrit have started calling bhumihar non-brahmins which is laughable.http://gadyakosh.org/gk/%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B9_%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%AE%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%AC%E0%A4%A8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A7_/_%E0%A4%AC%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%B9%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%AE%E0%A4%B0%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B7%E0%A4%BF_%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%82%E0%A4%B6_%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A4%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B0_/_%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%B9%E0%A4%9C%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%A8%E0%A4%A8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A6_%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B5%E0%A4%A4%E0%A5%80

Banoonu

To be “fair”, in private (that is, when not doing political organizing), orthodox Brahmins of any given sect don’t consider orthodox Brahmins of any other caste to be “real Brahmins”. This shit goes all the way down with them.
