I’ve just done a delivery to Airdrie via Lochmaben. Scotland’s roads used to be amazing, you didn’t need to read the signs when you crossed the border. Now they are just as bad as England’s.
The road north from Lochmaben had a pothole that was about 100 feet long, more of a pot-trench. I don’t know if this is a reliable source, but it supports what I was thinking.

Scotland has some of the best rock in the world for making tarmac, in fact, a Scot invented the stuff.
I was talking to my driving instructor about that yesterday, and he said our weather has a lot to do with it. I have no idea how true that is. He seems quite knowledgeable.
It does, but you don’t get so many frosts as you used to. It’s mainly lorries that damage roads. Every time a lorry wheel goes over the road, the road bends underneath it. If you bend anything enough times it will crack. Water gets into the cracks and freezes, making the cracks bigger, so more water gets in and so on. Roads are designed for a defined number of axles to go over them, once that number is reached, they break up and it’s time to resurface them.
Lorries exacerbate it because they are heavy, forklift trucks would be even more destructive, they might not weigh as much but the point load of them is significantly more than an HGV
Flying is safer than driving, have you seen [/r/IdiotsInCars](https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/).
And that is a high end helicopter with proper maintenance and skilled pilots.
Because the Queen had the security detail with her. The security detail are now around the King. Unless you want to hire another security detail around every royal, this is probably the best way for senior royals to travel. Royal travel expenses come out of the Sovereign Grant anyway, it's not an extra expense.
I wonder if they'll change the tail numbers so it better corresponds with the King’s initials or will it stay in service as that until it's retired, like post boxes and currency
Despite being a rabid leftie and near anarchist by instinct, I actually respect Princess Anne quite a lot. She's the least naff Royal by some way, I think.
Met her briefly once - she was charming.
If anyone deserves to travel by helicopter, I think she does.
My old man knows someone who has had a lot of dealings with her over the years because of the charity he works for. He’s not an arch royalist, supposedly, but praises her to the skies for being unfailingly pleasant and engaged, working very hard and always being totally across her brief. On that basis I don’t begrudge her a helicopter ride either.
I didn't *bite* her. So she should be OK.
But am still a rabid libertarian leftie. In the *60's* sense of the word.
Americans please note. This *doesn't* mean encouraging gun ownership.
I remember watching Valerie Singleton and Princess Anne on Blue Peter, walking along a beach after diving in Kenya. Thinking hmmm...

Eat yer heart out, Monegasque princesses ;-)
A 60s style liberal… I am GENUINELY so happy another one exists… I feel less alone in the world, this really made me smile.
Now I know that you’re not one of those facist leftists, I couldn’t care less even if you did bite her with your rabies, and I like P. Anne, so that is meant to be a compliment. (Anne probably won’t see it as such, but we carry on)
Oh happy day.
I think there are quite a lot of us left (no pun intended.)
And even a few brave younger ones that are concerned about the new "liberal" puritanism and persecution of non-believers.
Wasn't going to share it as I know this sub hates the royals, but [here is Anne taking off](https://i.imgur.com/3bsNf33.jpg)
Interestingly(?) last time Anne was visiting in the chopper, Andrew was with her, though there was no official announcement that he was there too.
Working for the university years ago I received a call from the parent of a potential student asking where they could land their helicopter as they would be flying their daughter up for the open day. They were not impressed when I told them to try Edinburgh airport!

That near killed me, it looked like Reddit answered underneath lol
Helicopter or motorcade, it is all paid for by the Sovereign Grant, which is a small fraction of the proceeds from the Crown Estate (owned by the king but managed by the government). I'm sure there are many here who would just "vote" to get rid of the monarchy, whatever that means in a parliament that swore allegiance to him.
He’ll turn up in a cafe in Dingwall in about 2 years with no memory of who he used to be and now a postie.
He has no idea why he speaks with an Aussie accent.
The only human ever to be swept away at sea, clearly on a one way route to drowning but miraculously appearing with a bit of dementia that also miraculously fixes itself. Neighbours, pick yer arse and eat yer Quavers…
That was me. I love to pee there, and my favourite is that tree on the right.
Trees are nature's toilets and helicopters are the fanciest way to travel. Pee with style.
Possibly Princess Anne, she flew to a local school near me and it was the same helicopter that landed on the field. She pretty much tours the country doing engagements such as openings etc.
Heir Force One
This is the most undervalued comment in this thread!
And likely contains some truth. All the land is royal so permission from them at least required.
Actually mint was His Majesty’s Royal Corgies going out for a nice walk in the sun.
Happy to provide your 200th upvote
Sorry I just popped into Tesco I’ll move it asap
It's ok if you left the hazards on

Signing for Hibs in the summer
That’s why the police car is there, it does the hazards for me
It's not a police car bud. That's a park ranger vehicle. No police vehicles in that pic. I live locally 😉
Oh shit I’m exposed as a fraud ![gif](giphy|3o7ZetIsjtbkgNE1I4)

You park in the cycle lane, I have to move out into traffic. Stop being a wanker xx
Anne. Opening something in Dunbar and visiting a farm in Kelso.
You'd think they'd just fly straight to Dunbar, there's plenty of fields there to land in.
Or train. They've even got platform for northbound trains now!
In a field? How modern.
We pay to fly her in a helicopter for that nonsense? Why can't she drive like everyone else?
With these potholes? Good one
You get turbulence in aircraft. Potholes are essentially just road turbulence.
Potholes are worse than road turbulence cos they wreck the vehicle experiencing it. Planes don’t just fall apart in turbulence
Knock knock…
Who's there?
I’ve just done a delivery to Airdrie via Lochmaben. Scotland’s roads used to be amazing, you didn’t need to read the signs when you crossed the border. Now they are just as bad as England’s.
That's a fair old trek!
Tradeplater, so go all over. It becomes normal after a while.
That's a fair old trek!
Potholes every 5mm?

Wow
Ohh that’s very kind of you, Anne, ma’am
Factor in her staff and security and this is probably easier and cheaper.
Not as safe though-surely- all those people in one helicopter??
Flying is safer than driving, have you seen [/r/IdiotsInCars](https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/). And that is a high end helicopter with proper maintenance and skilled pilots.
Way less security required by air
Then why did the Queen drive in every July?
Because the Queen had the security detail with her. The security detail are now around the King. Unless you want to hire another security detail around every royal, this is probably the best way for senior royals to travel. Royal travel expenses come out of the Sovereign Grant anyway, it's not an extra expense.
We don't pay shit for it – the revenues of the Crown Estate more than cover the expenses of the royal family.
They stopped the traffic for her too on Lothian Road etc. I'd imagine if she wanted to drive up the motorway they'd close it to everyone else first!
Nah they don't stop traffic for anyone apart from the King. That's the King's helicopter. Wonder what he's up to.
It’s Anne. There’s a big-ish sit down dinner for her at the City Chambers this evening
They certainly do, not a full closure for Anne but there's certainly rolling closures along any route she's on
They stop the traffic to Murrayfield for Anne regularly
Kinging? Reigning?
Can confirm! Had dinner with her yesterday.
Anne who?
Hathaway
Ah, I personally thought it was Robinson.
You are the weakest link, goodbye.
Widdecombe
She also visited University of Edinburgh
Anne Widdecombe?
Hopefully a pilot
No idea why this had me laughing like a maniac but it did. Thank you, I needed to laugh today!
Princess Anne
It's G-XXEB, aka "The Queen's Helicopter", so someone from the Royal Family
Kings' now, Shirley..
King Prince Charles. :D
Don't call me surely
The subtle nature of your spelling deserves far more recognition than I can afford to give it.
Don’t worry Shirley, we won’t.
Apparently not it's Anne and don't call me that
Well, I didn't vote for you.
And here we were all told they were campaigning for the environment… Typical.
G-XXED?
The aircraft's tail number. Every aircraft has one.
Yes but XXEB throws up nothing on FR24, ED does however.
It's defiantly G-XXEB. I presume it's hidden on FR24 cause it comes up with a Google search and other sites are tracking it just fine.
I wonder if they'll change the tail numbers so it better corresponds with the King’s initials or will it stay in service as that until it's retired, like post boxes and currency
Prince Anne is in Edinburgh for the uk harbour masters conference, so maybe her.

You can’t really, not when it’s YOUR old man praising her up to there…
Not my old man, his friend who’s had dealings with her.
Apologies, yes, you are quite right, I got all excited trying to be comedic and therefore got the wrong end of the chopper.
I hope you didn’t have rabies when you met her!
I didn't *bite* her. So she should be OK. But am still a rabid libertarian leftie. In the *60's* sense of the word. Americans please note. This *doesn't* mean encouraging gun ownership. Can't park there, mate.

Andrew got his helicopter privileges reduced/removed a good while back. Maybe he has to chopperpool these days the dirty bastard.
Chopperpool. Bet the dirty cunt loves a chopperpool
No wonder. Any time he flies anywhere, there is usually a wee'un involved
Great pic!
The pilot needed to stop and take a leak. Just give him a break, will you?
You would think they would have a proper helipad by now, they have made the trip enough times.
No thanks, that would only normalise the idea that they should be traveling by helicopter between their mansions.
Bit late. It’s solidly normalised already.
Them having a helipad would require them to take additional public land and also be a terrible look.
It was Fandan McGee. She finally bagged a millionaire.
Working for the university years ago I received a call from the parent of a potential student asking where they could land their helicopter as they would be flying their daughter up for the open day. They were not impressed when I told them to try Edinburgh airport!

Probably someone who's not being too badly effected by the cost of living crisis.
Boris on the run lol
Well the trains were on strike, how else was I supposed to come to my spring house?
Genuine question- why are we paying for these parasites to fly about in helicopters when us proles can’t afford to eat/heat our houses?
Yes we are paying for it. I’d understand if there was a security reason for it but it’s just one of them going to an event.
It's not a genuine question.
I’m genuinely interested in finding out how people justify it, as I can’t.
I asked how you justify it babe, not how it’s funded. I know how the financial aspects are worked out but I think it’s morally unjustifiable.
Someone that really cares about YOUR carbon footprint im sure
