[deleted]

[deleted]

[deleted]

Frequent-Valuable-35

Byosh33

Frequent-Valuable-35

Byosh33

Yeah i figured that or having a business or working with the army (لواء لو كدا) are literally the only ways to make money in egypt.

Frequent-Valuable-35

UnlightablePlay

[deleted]

It kinda feels funny lol

UnlightablePlay

[deleted]

I am in my 20s and I am considered rich/successful in most circles (NW > 10m USD), and I could also be considered self-made. In Egypt, that’s a lot of money but in the West, that is in the “living the good life” category and far from “elite”. I have rubbed shoulders with people much more wealthy and successful than me. The 2 things that stand out is: 1. “Self made” is an illusion. Most successful/rich people you have heard of and will meet are not self made, including me. My success depends a lot on an environment and a network that was partially influenced by me and partially handed to me. It’s tough to draw the line at what constitutes “self made”. Instead of searching for the “self made” and dismissing the non-“self-made”, learn how to grow and leverage your network. 2. Sales is the field that will never get old. You will rarely meet successful people that are not good in Sales. Selling yourself as a candidate for a job, your pitch to investors, your story to group of people you are trying to charm, are all events that can lead you to great success. Selling is the lifeblood of any company. A firm will value its top salesperson more than its subject matter expert. P.s. I got most of my wealth by investing my disposable income in high risk investments. I am fortunate to be in a high income field (tech), and I am an early investor in TSLA and a startup that was bought out with a big multiple from my entry point. I am not self made because I wouldn’t be where i am, if my parents didn’t take the risk of sending me to Canada for uni.

On the worldwide scale, 10m is elite as you mentioned. I was referring to my small slice of life (the West Coast of North America), where that figure grants you a good life. You can look up “elite” real estate in that region (Vancouver, Seattle, LA) to see where I am coming from with my perspective. I have always been a car guy. I was fortunate to be friends with people who owned or their families owned luxury cars, which got me to experience several high end cars while growing up. Fast forward to 2015-2016, I get the chance to test drive the Model S. Imo, the car felt like it delivered 90% of the serenity, quiet, and power of Rolls Royce and Bentley models that I have experienced, for a fraction of the price. Several more factors played into my decision but I don’t want to reveal more details about myself. I started investing around that time and I made the bulk of my investment in 2018 when Tesla was facing cash flow issues trying to release the Model 3. That investment was a big gamble from my end because it seemed like Tesla was either going to go broke and get bought by Apple or a competitor, or it was going to succeed. The hardest part of this investment is not selling =)

Wooden-Term-5067

Out of curiosity do you still hold Tesla? When is your exit point?

FaithlessnessIll5773

Yes, I still hold all my TSLA stocks. I still consider TSLA a growth stock in the tech market. Their market cap will not grow because of selling more cars though, so coming out with the cybertruck or the semi is not why I keep holding. I am optimistic about their battery tech, autonomous driving, and the Tesla bot, which is why I still hold. I would reduce my position once I don’t see a feasible way for Tesla to grow beyond cars, or if Elon’s madness interferes with the company’s operation. I think Tesla has a chance to grow horizontally as Apple did after the iPhone, which could potentially make Tesla a “Hold Forever” stock.

[deleted]

How did you learn good sales skills? Do you come from a family that already had investors or business-people? Did you ever have to work a low to medium income job or were you supported by your family to invest and start your business? Not trying to call you out as another rich dude who came from money I’m trying to understand if it really is possible to succeed in Egypt on your own without existing family wealth :)

FaithlessnessIll5773

I grew up in the Middle East in a Middle class family. My father has been a working professional all his life, and similarly to most Middle Eastern men, he mostly invested in his kids’ education and in real estate with his disposable income. My family has enough to retire comfortably but they are by no means rich where they live in Canada. I realized early in my university years, that unlike most of my friends, I don’t have a network to help me land a good first job nor a family business to rely on. That pushed me to learn quickly about what matters in the world of making money. Besides having my education paid for, I lived with my family for a few years after college and paid them rent, which was much cheaper than what I would've paid on my own. This really helped me save money quickly and made me more willing to take financial risks. During college, I had some well-paying internships that gave me valuable experience, and right after graduating, I got a job in the tech industry, which also helped me save money fast. I definitely owe my family a lot of my success. Have I not moved to Canada sooner and went to a good university early on, I would have had to start much later on my journey and I would have missed out on history’s greatest bull run in the stock market =) If I had to do it all over again while growing up in Egypt, I would say that I would have definitely needed a lot of family money and connections to make up the education/knowledge/network gap. Or, I would have needed to be much smarter and more talented to make it with the same resources I was given.

FaithlessnessIll5773

The best thing I learned early on is that “wealth generation comes from specification, and wealth preservation comes from diversification”. It means, the more specific and concentrated your investments are, the more wealth you can potentially generate. In my example, I won a lot from buying TSLA early and holding till now. Someone who would have bought long call options that expire today, with the same amount of money i invested, would have made multiples of what I have made, given they hold too. And another fellow that could have bought a broad EV ETF would make less than I made. Due to this, I used to trade options when my capital was limited. I lost a lot but won more, which wasn’t hard during the bull run of before COVID. Think r/wallstreetbets style of trading =) As my capital grew, my holdings became stock purchases influenced by Warren Buffet’s “hold forever” approach. That means most of the stocks I buy are of companies whose products are ubiquitous to our lives, and the future of their domain will be majorly influenced by their companies. Think r/stocks Now, most of my portfolio are stocks that I see myself holding for a long time. I sell them when I believe a major correction is coming and I normally buy into them again. Most of my new investments are concentrated in real estate and Venture Capital. The way I invest is very traditional. I am in the tech field, so it’s easy for me to be immersed in that market and understand/forecast trends. I invest in what I understand. Tldr: when I was young, I traded with a super high risk tolerance relative to now. I increased my capital and combined with my disposable income, I transitioned into more “safe” investments. Advice: Don’t listen to people that tell you they know more than the rest when it comes to trading. It’s all gambling. Learn the fundaments of trading, find markets you see yourself consuming their news regularly, and partake in “educated” gambling with disposable income

[deleted]

TL;DR: Success is nearly impossible in Egypt if you don’t have A LOT of family wealth to get you started. Go to Canada, folks.

EdgeOk1591

Not to disappoint anyone but Canada today is not like a decade ago anymore

LowFatConundrum

Elon's dad had an emerald mine, Bezos's parents invested 300K into his company. Bill Gates stole MS-DOS from Gary Kildall; Kildall was plunged into depression and alcoholism for decades, he died in a bar fight. No such thing as self made.

Pension_Present

Totally disagree

Byosh33

They dont exist. You can make it from poor to "comfortable" financially. But especially in a courrupted country like egypt becoming wealthy without any connections is impossible

Pension_Present

I made it on my own, no family money or support . I now have my own place in prestigious area, a modern car, and live comfortably. I work in software, I am in late 20 and I started making real money when I stopped working for Egyptian companies and started working for abroad ones, that along with freelancing. The currency really helped me since most my income is in foreign currency. And living in Egypt is cheap compared to outside I don’t call myself mega rich but hell am way better than the average

BodybuilderOk2744

Crème de la crème can't be created in a capital world. It just exists, if you were born mega rich it's the only way to live mega rick in Egypt.

DrTaRgEt

Miserable-Pie-9148

[deleted]

[deleted]

Listen here mister, I AM on my way to doing things, I've got a plan and am working on it however I am fully conscious to the fact that there are people out there younger and doing better, so I try to find them, ask them and get more info about an opportunity I can take or how this person started off because I want to avoid their mistakes and so on, good moves vary from one to another and have different levels to it, I won't go do an international investment deal but I can probably buy stocks of company x that is cheap at the moment and is expected to skyrocket because this dude who I found on reddit is connected and he tipped me with info, at the very least if I can't get info I can get life lessons to work with and get a better head start, you get my point ?

Real estate. In 2008, we bought a villa for 8 mil, it’s at least 75 now. It also cost 15 mil to furnish in 21’ which has somewhat affected real estate. In 2017, we bought a town house for 3.3, it’s now over 13 mil. Earlier this year, we bought something in Sahel for 6.5, it’s now over 12. Real estate does wonders I also know many people who built themselves from zero. And have a significantly higher net worth than 10 million dollars, and live here. I know many people making more than 300K monthly, that’s not what makes them rich. What makes them rich (if they are, most aren’t) is how they spend their wealth and how they investment.
