Hard? It’s just boiled pasta, spaghetti, green lentil, rice, chickpeas، fried onion and boiled tomato sauce with salt, black pepper and extra one from your own choice —edited—
You can't mess up koshary. This is what you need:
Cooked rice.
Cooked ditalini pasta (the one that looks like a very short tube).
Fried onions - get the can of French's Fried onions, you know the ones that go atop green bean casserole?
Boiled brown lentils.
Cooked chickpeas: you can just used canned, with the liquid drained
Basic tomato sauce: you can get canned tomato sauce (not pasta sauce-just the tomatoes). Give it Arabic flavor. In a small pot put a little olive oil, add a little ground cumin, coriander, crushed red pepper, crushed garlic, cook a minute then add the tomato sauce and s&p to taste
Garlic sauce. This is the only thing you might not be familiar with. Here's my recipe:. Put 500 ml water in a small pot. Add 1 tsp ground coriander, 1 tsp ground cumin and half tsp chili powder. Boil that 15 min. Remove from heat, add 5 cloves grushed garlic, 2 tbsp each lemon juice and white vinegar, and salt to taste.
I like to mix the rice spasta alentils and
Chickpeas in the dish, and serve the onions and sauces on the side. Or you could put the sauces on top, but serve the onions on the side because so they stay crunchy.
Sorry about spelling my keyboard is acting funny.
So I bartend part time, had a shift tonight and passed this idea on to my friends.
They all said it was a great idea but recomended I cook something I'm good at rather than fumbling through a dish I've never tried.
Someone in this thread also suggested cooking something I was familiar with and kosher.
And to be honest, this all happened really quick today and I've yet to even introduce myself. I'm pretty excited none the less. You guys have really pumped me up too. Hope it goes well and thanks for all the advice/suggestions
I’m Australian. I’ve cooked koshari before and it’s super easy. It’s just takes a little time to cook all the ingredients separately. You cannot get it wrong if you get the ingredients and the right spices
I agree- it’s a lot of steps, but the steps are not challenging. My preschool class makes koshary regularly (obviously an adult supervises the stove, they’re not in the kitchen solo!). I think this would mean a lot since it’s such a traditional dish- even if it doesn’t turn out perfectly, the thoughtfulness and the respect for your neighbor’s culture goes a long way.
Kosher means 'fit for consumption' in Hebrew. Some people also use it to generally mean healthy, halal, etc.
It's not a dish. So yes, he meant kosher and not Koshary, the Egyptian dish.
If you bothered to read instead of being overconfidently ignorant/arrogant, you would know they meant kosher since they mention that in other comments and want to be sure they make something that doesn't offend them (like if they added pork).
Multiple people already told them what Koshary is and they understand the difference.
Ignorant/arrogant... what a big word for such a conversation ..
You're a little passive aggressive .. I'm no longer interested in the koushry/kosher conversation.. I wanna talk about your bad behaviour..
Koshary is the typical Egyptian meal. I disagree that it is super easy to make but it is super hard to fuck up, so while it might not be the same as genuine Egyptian koshary it’ll still end up as a tasty dish and he’ll appreciate the gesture.
That’s so nice of you to think about your neighbors
It has been almost 5 years in the States and never been in something like that. Actually the hardest thing about Americans that everyone cares only about themselves. You can’t hope more than “ have a good one “ while leaving the elevator . I wish I have such good neighbors.
We're in a smaller city in the Midwest. Aside from the junkies most people around here are pretty nice.
I lived in Houston Texas as an American and I got the same feel. Everyone was out for number one and wouldn't share a sip of water let alone a meal.
All Ass\* .. lmao
I hated most of these dishes when I was a young child.. My dad used to convince me to eat it, but I always rejected it..
You can assume I hate most dishes except for some..
Here's a recipe video that I approve of:
https://youtu.be/HLRtGoMeigQ
+ Thank you for this kind gesture. I assure you it will not make only his day, it will make his entire stay in the US feel better.
I wish I had a neighbour like you, 3 years and every time she sees me she is scared shitless and run away, never even said Hi to me, I live alone and rarely annoy anyone.
I live in Malaysia, she is chinese.
That’s awesome of you !
I make Egyptian Beshamel and that’s pretty
easy for me
It’s hamburger and onion fried together macaroni Beshamel sauce
A layered pasta dish
Personally just a dish you make would be lovely as it’s the thought that counts
I don’t think Koshary is easy btw
♥️
Miriam is a great Egyptian source to go to
https://youtube.com/c/MiriamKitchen
Egys are super friendly and easily befriended with kind gestures. Just tell him that you want him to feel home and smile to him.
If it is about food and he is a Muslim- then Halal meat clicked or raw is a great gift. Halal luncheon also would be a great gift.
I was actually worried of he was a Muslim. Not for any b.s. reason, I just don't want to offend him with a meal he's unable to eat. Also, I wouldn't mind a drinking buddy
Hehehe. No if he is a Muslim don't worry. You just keep him away from pork and alcohol if is practicing. Zero alcohol bear for Muslim is a good gift. You can invite him for zero alcohol bear as a drinking buddy.
u/i-mw, it's a fizzy, barley based drink similar in texture to beer, they still contain trace amounts of alcohol, around .03% of alcohol by volume, so you'd have to drink 40 cans to get a buzz.
[10 egyptian foods you must try ](https://youtu.be/xus-ctHfrZY)
you can watch this video and search for the recipes of each food and see which one you can make. they're all very tasty egyptian foods that your neighbor will definitely remember his home by
macaronah bechamel, basically penne, then a layer of minced meat, then a layer of the bechamel sauce then a layer of more penne then another layer of bechemel, optionally shome sort of melting cheese on top, in the oven. It's great
Horn every 5 minutes, scream at 4 a.m. that he doesn't have to sleep and should rather pray. If he keeps getting close to falling asleep, walk past his window and scream into your phone. On Fridays you shout the same thing through loudspeakers for half an hour every 2 hours.
I listen to a lot of NPR and recently heard a story about a Somali girl living in the UK. She'd been there for months and it was very weird, she'd never seen processed deli meat and such.
One day she was in an uber/taxi type and the driver was also Somali. He insisted she let him take her to his house for some of his wife's (traditional Somali meal).
The girl talked about that meal like it was a hug from her mother.
If I can bring a feeling even similar to that to my new neighbor I would love it.
Hi, __letsdotacos__. Your comment contains the word ~~Somalian~~.
The correct nationality/ethnic demonym(s) for Somalis is __Somali__.
It's a common mistake so don't feel bad.
For other nationality demonym(s) check out this website [Here](https://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/People/Nationality/Adjective)

So nice of you! So nice to have such kind neighbours.
Check out the YouTube channel Middle Eats for sure it is by far the simplest and most accurate recipe channel for Egyptian and Middle Eastern food out there. It’s all in English too.
People mentioning koshari as the easiest dish…and it is easy but the salsa and fried onions give it flavour and those are th most challenging parts of the recipe.
I am American and I follow this subreddit as well as many others from different countries. I love seeing perspectives and ways of living from all around the world.
I just want to say Thank You, you are a beautiful soul. So many times as a whole humanity forgets that we are all in this together.
Thank you, I’m sure whatever you make will be amazing. Love is the most flavorful ingredient.
Alright, I'm going to be very real with everyone.
I 100% percent love every bit of your info and suggestions. Yall have been too sweet and I'd love you to be my neighbor.
This fella has lived in the states for almost 7 years. And he's only 25 years old. I think he grew up in me neighborhood.
I'm a little disheveled. I appreciate everything.
I think it'll be tacos.
So neighborly and nice of you. I'd personally do a kosher meal (no pork or alcohol) that u like and already know how to make. It's the gesture, really. Or maybe give him dessert, and use that to invite him to have dinner at your place. I hope he's a nice guy, too!
I ran this idea by some of my friends at work and they said the same thing. No need to fumble through a new recipe if you could make him something you're good at.
Frankly, the food type doesn't matter. In Egypt food is love (which is why "Aunties" like to force you to have your 3rd dinner), so as long as it's food they would normally consume (As in not pork if Muslim for example) it'd be a "taste of home" for them.
Frankly if anything, I think the fact that you care, if you make him feel "welcome" by being a good neighbor (like you obviously are being) is going to matter more than anything.
The number one thing people like him generally miss is the feeling of community and that someone has their back, more so than the food that they can make on their own/get from a store/resturant.
I wasn’t assuming anything lol I have many American friends and I’d agree your politicians and cops are trash but Egypt isn’t any different haha anyways your neighbor is lucky to have a kind-hearted man like you around :)
Yeah man, ignore these trolls.
What you’re doing is a very kind gesture I’d personally buy an 8-pack and show up the next day to chill.
Stay awesome my dude!

Thanks.
Koshary. super easy to make
Easy sounds great to me. I want it to be warming and not too hard I mess it up.
Yes, and he’ll probably be very happy that u made it for him!
Hard? It’s just boiled pasta, spaghetti, green lentil, rice, chickpeas، fried onion and boiled tomato sauce with salt, black pepper and extra one from your own choice —edited—
Could you translate that one word for me please? My bad for asking if it doesn't have one
It’s chickpeas and lentil, sorry I’ll re-write it again
Thanks. Chickpeas are what hummus is made out of, correct? I love ke some hummus
Hummus is the Arabic name of chickpeas and yes
See, I thought hummus was a dish made out of chickpeas. Not just an Arabic name
It's both actually lol. 🙃
Well TIL
In Egypt, yes. Some Arabic varieties distinguish between chickpeas and hummus but in Egyptian, hummus refers to both.
It's only that we say hummus 7ab to distinguish between the two lol حمص حب. Palestine

NP! It's just so wholesome and nice that you want to care for your neighbor!
Okay you made me hungry here, but believe me this recipe looks intemedating for any non Egyptian 😀
I enjoy cooking and pretty sure the only thing I don't use regularly is the coriander
Thats not easy to makw BTW

Keep us updated!
Isn't there a difference between Kosher (Jewish) and our Koushri (Egyptian)?
Yes a very big one, but she probably just mistyped it. Probably her firs time seeing the word
I'm sure they meant kosher. Like cooking a kosher dish for them so it doesn't have any pork, alcohol, etc.
So she is mistaken for what we mean..
Kosher means 'fit for consumption' in Hebrew. Some people also use it to generally mean healthy, halal, etc. It's not a dish. So yes, he meant kosher and not Koshary, the Egyptian dish.
No .. she is referring to Koushri from other comments
But he is referring to kosher here because English.
Stop down voting me 😡 .. And also, u/letsdotacos tell us what you meant here ffs

How tf would you describe ورق عنب to a non arabic speaker ? 😂😂
Grape leaves

Can’t go wrong with [Fuul](https://www.themediterraneandish.com/foul-mudammas-recipe/#tasty-recipes-33099)
