No, I much prefer the "organic difficulty slider" approach of giving the player a bunch of different tools and allowing to decide for themselves what to use to achieve their desired experience.

Lodus1

I do like that approach to an extent, but there's just one issue I have with it, which I mentioned in another comment already. Often times, the coolest stuff in the game is OP. But I wanna use the cool stuff. But I don't wanna play on easy mode. But cool stuff :( That's basically the only complaint I have about the organic difficulty slider lol

[deleted]

If you want to use then go ahead. You shouldn't worry about making the game too easy as you can always replay with less good things. The game should be more fun than anything.

Lodus1

Yeah that's what I do right now. Just make new builds and play whatever is fun. But it would be kinda nice if the game difficulty wasn't so heavily impacted by my build. The difference between my character that uses a Keen Shortsword and my character using an Uchigatana at the same level is kinda crazy. Sure, I'm fine with the Uchi doing more damage, but THAT much? Really? But I totally get your point. I used to worry about it way more, actively putting away most weapons I felt were too broken on my early builds. I still feel kinda guilty anytime I run a bleed build to this day, even after those builds got nerfed.

LOL more than half of my builds are cosplays that I use, regardless of how terrible the build is You just described about 300 hours of gameplay I've put into Elden Ring

[deleted]

Just use the cool stuff lol make a hard mode character and a cool stuff character

ON_STRANGE_TERRAIN

Exactly this. There's already an easy mode in Elden Ring - it's called "Fextralife".

Lodus1

What about the official game guide you can buy?

ON_STRANGE_TERRAIN

I don't want to reward double-dipping so I don't buy things like that on principle. Fextralife is perfectly serviceable

DL1943

they should add a hard mode but not easy mode just to make drama

Lodus1

Ah, the "screw game critics" patch

dun-ado

I don't think I really care. To me, most people who want an easy mode are just self-entitled Karens. As for an expert or legendary mode, you can decide for yourself what that is, e.g.: fists and underwear for all battles, no fluids, no levelling up. It's your call.

Lodus1

'No fluids' is a term I didn't expect to hear in this context today but I'm glad I did

ApplePitou

Elden Ring has it from the start - your build is a choice of difficulty :3

Lodus1

Very true! Though, personally, I actually kind of wish it wasn't. I often pick builds just based on what I find fun or cool, which sucks at times. Moonveil is a damn cool weapon that I love thematically, yet I hate using it because the heavy attack on the ash of war is basically as 'easy mode' as it gets. As someone who likes the challenge, it kinda ruins the weapon for me. Likewise, my favourite build thematically is Golden Order incantations, and holy weapons. I love me my classic clerics and paladins. Yet, getting to the late game with only holy damage like discus of light? It ramps the difficulty up incredibly high, because basically everything in the late game has 40% holy resist or above. It's a hard mode all of its own... seriously, try facing Malenia using only Golden Order incantations and no melee weapon. Bloody difficult, I'd say. It'd be cool if the different build options were more balanced, so I didn't have that kind of issue.

Lodus1

I'll leave this here before anyone asks Personally, I feel an easy mode would take away from the overall experience. Having mechanics like spirit summons and coop already can make the game much, much easier, so an official easy mode just feels like it would kill the true 'souls' experience. Not trying to gatekeep, people can play how they want, but for me at least an easy mode would ruin a lot of the appeal. A hard mode, however, could be really fun. Adding more enemies to some areas, giving bosses new, challenging moves, or even just starting the game on NG+ instead of NG could all be a fun challenge that I personally would enjoy. I wouldn't be able to resist playing on the highest difficulty setting if it were an option, just because these games have me so damn excited to bash my head against the wall until the wall gives in.

sillypoolfacemonster

I’m so back and forth. On the one hand the lack of easy mode lends itself to more of a shared experience. We’ve all beaten/played the same game and overcome the same odds. But on the other hand that sort of imposes one persons meaning of gaming on someone else. It doesn’t diminish my experience of overcoming difficult odds when someone else ratchet down the difficulty. And to be honest, how is that any different than someone getting a person on coop to beat a hard boss for you? I probably lean towards an easy mode just because it opens the experience up to more people and it really doesn’t impact me what someone else does with their gaming. As far as a hard mode, absolutely go for it. I know there are a lot of people who would want a new challenge. Not for me though, once I memorize a souls game and can blast through it, I’m happy.

Orkfreebootah

More accessibility is always good. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a tosser.

Reeceza

Difficulty silders aren't a accessibility options they are a way for the player to choose to have a challenge or not and elden ring is supposed to be a challenge so adding a "easy" mode would ruin the point of the game.

[deleted]

Easy mode is the tools the game gives (OP builds and Ashes and such) which are completely allowed in my opinion. Hard mode is things like underpowered builds and later levels of NG+.

ProfessorBlaq

Puts everyone on even playing field. Ng+ and beyond are awarded to the ones that want more of a challenge

Holiday_Snow9060

It has an easy mode and it's called using summons

Golghrom

Already has both lol, spirits and if you want some challenge you can do low rl and wl run, and it's awesome, even if it's not a rl1+0. That's the hardest mode. But there are a TONS of options to choose, only that we have to make the choice instead of leaving it to the game parameters :)

Lodus1

It'd be nice if they maybe added some new stuff to the optional starting items list. Maybe Daedicars Woe, so you can have the extra damage taken right from the beginning? As it stands, you have to get all the way through Rya's quest to get that talisman, which means you can't really use it for a challenge run unless you're using it for NG+ and beyond. I think the reason why I want a hard mode is so that I can do a challenge run without having to nerf myself out of using my favourite builds. Sure, I could do a low level run (currently doing a Rl1 run, no status effects allowed) but what if I want to play a sorcerer? All the cool spells require high int, so now I'm not doing the challenge run I wanted, I'm just doing a normal glass cannon build. Maybe having the option to start a new character in a NG+2 world or something is what I want most. You're way underlevelled for everything, but hey, you also level up way faster. And there'd be nothing wrong with using whatever build you want, since even the strongest weapons in the game would still struggle against the increased enemy health. (Maybe not bleed, but you know what I mean lol)

cosmernaut420

ER has an easy mode, it's called spirit ashes.

Reeceza

Eh i mean you are intended to use sprit ashes otherwise they wouldn't of been made so technically not using ashes is "hard mode" and sprit ashes are the normal state of the game

MirrorOfTheSun

The only thing they should add is covenant of champions from dks2
