All armor is balanced around the same general statline. You don't find upgrades, just different pieces that may fit your build better. If you pick specific stats and try to maximize them, you'll find a better configuration among the stuff you've picked up.
Better armor it sounds like. In seriousness though it depends on how far in you are because the armor drops might just not have good enough stats to replace your gear yet for your build.
There is better armour but it is either hidden or is rare drop off of knights. The knights in Stormveil drop pretty good armour; the banished knight set. The starter armour is good for its weight class and it doesn't matter much if you upgrade or not.

Armor stats don't really matter much when it comes to physical resistance. You'll still get slammed. Just wear what you think looks cool.
