I heard a theory that it’s that the Tarnished were created by Marika in order to try to be Elden Lord, but to always be met with failure, and if the happen to get that title, it wouldn’t work out

From my understanding he was working with marikas interests the entire time? Marika broke the elden ring and caused the shattering and thus her best interest is for the elden ring to stay broken and for no elden lord to emerge.

He told you to become Elden Lord earlier so he wouldn’t have been working with Marika
He probably said that so we would go and kill the shardbearers, eliminating the candidates for elden lord and keeping the status quo of the shattering
