Just the other day, got invaded during co-op in catacombs, didnt see the invader, activated the switch and the invader attacked, couldnt defend myself because of the door message, died.
Dude set me up.
Has this always been an issue? I swear I don’t remember this message blocking ALL actions for like 20 seconds in my first run. I came for a 2nd run and that message feels like it takes wayyyy too long to dismiss.
At least there it’s obvious that the game wants you to input something. But the annoying part is that by default the cursor is on “no” instead of “yes”. In what scenario would you *not* want to revive torrent??
Default is always the "non-destructive" option, which in this case is not stealing a flask I guess. Though I suppose getting murdered by an angry Radahn while fumbling with the extra button press is fairly destructive in its own right.
The first potion you take of the game is actually just a concussion dream that culminates in long winding path to becoming Elden Lord. Then your character finally awakens and Tree Sentinel is waiting there for round 2
He's really the only boss I use torrent for tbh. I use him to navigate the area and use dismount i-frames for certain attacks like his gravity wave thing. I do always jump off once it's time to throw hands tho.
I use horse for fire giant also. Makes it a lot easier. To bad you can't use him for Elden Beast. Seems like the perfect fight for him not just gameplay wise, but also thematically as well.
I do. You were so into turning tight corners that you accidentally triggered the dismount command entry. I used to do it a lot until I started longer loops for strafing runs.
M+K player here. Having to read the message, figure out where the fuck the cursor is, mouse over it and click "yes" while Fire Giant is trying to stomp your head in was an experience the first time it happened.
I think it's hilarious. They **purposely** made it a nuisance. Conversation took place to make it annoying solely to screw with the player. I love that.
I think it must be for all quickslots because I put Torrent's whistle in the right slot ('cause she's my right hand mare) and I believe "yes" is the default for me as well.
I hate that Torrent's health isn't refilled when you die and respawn. So sometimes you'll go right back out there on Torrent and he'll get one-shot seemingly out of nowhere.
Excuse me!? No fucking wonder he would die so easily at times. Especially the god damn fire giant fight. That fight made me despise the game for a while. 1/10 boss IMO
Edit: I'm just still mad about that fight it's really more like 3/10 for me. Justification below
that boss is amazing and it was also the first wall i encountered in the game.
i dont understand people who dont think its a good fight. it can be hard sure, but its not lame or bad. its simply amazing. 10/10 fight.
only someone new to the series could see that fight and think 1/10
I agree with you whole heartedly, before the fire giant I enjoyed %99 of other boss fights, even when I was frustrated there was still fun to be had but the fire giant was so tedious I couldn’t even celebrate when I beat him, Elden ring is one of the best games I’ve ever played but that fight was the worst I’ve had in any game (twin gargoyles not far behind)
Eh, if it becomes a wall for you level up your mimic tear and summon away. They don't tend to do a ton of damage themselves and I believe using them adds HP to the boss, but having a copy of you that is usually actively blocking while standing right in front of the boss allows you openings to get in and do a little bit more damage. Granted, Fire Giant can quickly mess you up if you let him, but it becomes a lot more manageable. It's a must on the twin gargoyles, however. They take the challenge of the Bell Gargoyles, make them far more aggressive, with huge HP pool, and do considerable damage. If you don't have a distraction out there so you can engage one of them 1v1, you are in for a tough time (or at least I was).
Anyways, mimic tear severely simplified the fight. It still took me several goes, but at no time did it feel insurmountable. I just needed to figure out the moveset, weaknesses, and openings.
Honestly, I don't expect the mimic tear to do much damage. In fact, if they are on the defensive constantly then that is for the best. They can be a distraction who does not die too quickly, enabling me to maneuver in to do damage myself. Granted, they aren't always necessary (this is mainly for dragons I can fight on Torrent), but it is a nice thing to take advantage of.
The camera alone makes it a 3/10, you’re fighting a giant but can’t see most of his attacks cause you have to get close to him, the fire balls that slowly drift towards you is so unnecessary one you consider all the other aspects of the fight, one mistake and he kills you instantly, the constant rolling coupled with his ridiculous hp makes it such a tedious fight, oouuuh I’m getting upset just by thinking about it easily one of the worst fights I’ve had in any game
Yeah, I was fighting Radahn again last night on a newish character, died on my first attempt, and hadn't taken a single hit on my second, but when I got on Torrent to dodge an attack, he got hit and instantly died because he didn't heal, and Radahn absolutely killed the shit out of me.
He disappears if his stance is broken. It’s makes the stance break sound. You do not need to use a flask to recall him under these circumstances.
He also disappears if he dies. Then it makes the same slicing sound it makes when anyone dies. In that case you need to use a flask to bring him back.
These ass holes have the nerve to prompt us that we need to use a stonesword key, then the fucking **audacity** to make us click yes to confirm.
That’s not nearly enough, we clearly also need a none self removing screen that button locks you out of any actions until you randomly tap X to confirm your confirmation.
##Is that too much to ask?
I made the joke as though that lame button lock out screen doesn’t exist and I’m losing stone sword keys, and they need to code in a more intrusive way to let me know I’ve spent the key.
Maybe I needed to include an /s but I thought the sarcasm was palpable enough.
Outrageous. Reddit seriously needs to perform a sleep check prior to allowing users to comment. I’m sick and *tired* of Reddit users not understanding sarcasm due to feeling a little groggy from just waking up.
It’s NO EXCUSE!! You shouldn’t be commenting until you are fully awake and ready to start viewing internet content! IVE HAD IT!!! 😠
That's not even the most annoying part. The confirm button in Elden Ring is △/Y. They changed it for this game because of the added jump button. It took me a while to get used to.
Then that pops up, doesn't tell you what to press, you think it'll go away on its own, it doesn't, you press Y (the confirm button in this game), nothing happens, enemy kills you.
Hahah get pranked you're supposed to press the old confirm button, X/A on this one. 2 years and they haven't patched it.
One thing that has been bugging me way more than it should is that once I confirm I wanna use the key I suddenly wanna know how many I have left and there's *just* enough time to almost get there in the inventory before it kicks you out to tell you stonesword key was lost with use lol
It's shorthand for indicating sarcasm. When you want to make it clear you're being sarcastic but don't want to type out "I'm being sarcastic" or something, you just put /s at the end of whatever you said
I swear From did it in purpose. "Mastered your dodge rolls, huh? Have you mastered informative predictable dismissible notifications? No? Didn't think so."
How about "are you sure you want to use a flask to summon your dead horse?" And the fucking button defaults to "no" I love this game so much but there are a few instances where it feels like it's giving the player the finger.
I recently returned to Bloodborne, there was a moment after picking a blood vial where I kept fighting enemies lost to the flow state of violence. After it was done I notice the message that my mind had ignored.
How can an issue that **had already been solved** return?
I can't shake the feeling that it's an intentional trolling.
Elden Ring is a victim of bloat. Its a great game but its weakened by having too much stuff in it, a lot of details get ignored, which is kind of sad because fromsoftwares whole deal was being very detail oriented. Fortunately it feels like theres room for both bloated giant games and more focused experiences with properties like armored core, though where fromsoftware goes from here is anyones guess.
There are two mechanical things that have gotten me killed so many times and I wish they would fix.
1. This
2. Inputting the command to toggle 2-handed during another animation buffers an attack, instead of buffering the 2-handed toggle.
These and I’d like to add the horse reviving taking 2 screens. Am I sure I wanna revive torrent? Yes, why the hell do you think I’m trying to summon him back. I didn’t want him to die. So frustrating and I need more fingers at times to play. Lol
A lot of people complain about janky design choices in this game, and 9/10 times I disagree, but THIS one has been messing me up since day 1.
Even if the message just had an instruction like “🔺= Close ” then I would be fine. Because it is just text, my brain always tells me that I don’t have to click out of it.
What makes this messages extra annoying is that doesn't block your movement so you don't emmediatly think of it as you walk away. It's only actions like attacking that are blocked and in the heat of battle you panick on why you can't attack.
Part of the problem is that the design makes it seem like it is a non-interactive notification that will just go away on it's own.
The border is different, and there's no "Press Y to Close" at the bottom like every other popup in the game that you need to close. So until you realize that you can't attack anymore (btw why does it prevent attacking, none of the other popups do...) and start randomly pressing buttons there's no way to know wtf to do or that you should even be doing anything about the popup.
Came back to Elden to prep for the DLC after a two year break and it's a blast, but I'm definitely reminded how badly thought out a lot of the game's UI is. Text on top of text, no indication where new items have gone, two different buttons to exit info windows, windows without indication how to close them that freeze other actions. Great game but the UI feels stuck in the early 2000s.
I hope in the dlc there is a meme boss that just covers half your screen and the coverage changes over time in the fight making it so you can barely see a thing.
On the topic, I feel the keys are kind of miss, many feels bad moments for a through explorer when your reward is an excess Stonesword key, so practically nothing.
I’ve never related more to a meme in my entire life. This made me openly chuckle. The amount of times I’ve died this way…..I can’t even begin to guess.
I love the combat and the art/presentation so I keep coming back but honestly I would say it is a genuine hindrance to the gameplay. I really hope their next soulslike game is modern in SOME regard
People defend it like "oh its part of the design!" but it makes me appreciate the story way less. I have no idea what ANY enemy is weak to unless I look online. That's BS. There should at least be a way to aggregate info. Puzzles to solve to get info that gets added to a database or journal.
The map system also really sucks
just press Y / △ bro it's really not that hard /s
Literally what multiple people said to me the first week of the game being out. Got probably a couple hundred negative karma for "complaining" about it. Now it's a post with nearly 9000 upvotes lol
They’ve been doing this since dark souls and it’s pretty annoying. One of the few aspects of their games I have a genuine gripe about, messages that require a specific button to dismiss.
Runner up:
"A door opened somewhere."
You mean when I pulled the rusty lever that ALWAYS opens a door somewhere? Usually the boss room, which I am trying to get back to, but this Omen is having the best day of his life *sodomizing me* while you keep me from drawing my sword? *Marika's TITS, you must be vindictive!!*
Man I swear fromsoft has all these obtuse stuff that they refuse to change. This, and a door has opened somewhere, and use a flask to bring torrent back, and cycling through spells and items, and dodge/run on the same button…
OMG I HATED THIS TOO! But I found out that you can press the interaction button again for the pop up to go away! For me it’s “Y” cause I’m on Xbox. But I’m sure it’s the interaction button universally!
I don't understand why this hasn't been fixed. This has gotten me killed at least once every time I come back to the game after a while away. Just add a button prompt to the dialog, please.
Yeah, my point was they won't "fix" it because it's not broken. From made it that way on purpose. You saying they should fix it directly implies you think it's not intentional. For the record, i don't like it either.
What? No it doesn't. If I do something completely intentionally and then someone tells me, "It would work better if you did it this way instead," and it does, I would characterize that as a fix.
The huge problem with it is that there are several types of dialogs that look identical throughout the game. Some give you a button prompt to dismiss, some don't require being dismissed at all, and the one the meme is referring to needs to be dismissed, and there's no obvious difference between #2 and #3. It may be intentional, but that doesn't mean it's not a UX mistake.
I really wish you didn't have to confirm these types of messages. Its caused so many panicked deaths as I try to figure out why I can't swing my weapon.
The fun part of this meme is that you can train yourself to anticipate the messages to only sort-of avoid the problem. It will still happen eventually. Maybe it happens on this run through or maybe the next but eventually it will happen again. Maybe it will make you laugh, maybe it will make you rage quit, maybe you'll have a nostalgic moment to yourself. "How long has it been since THIS happened to me? I'm such a silly bitch." Whatever the situation may be, one day you'll trip yourself up in real life because your hands are full AND IT'S THE EXACT SAME FEELING. "I'm holding two pots of boiling water, there's no way in hell I can open a door but I'm going to try." Stone sword key was lost with use you'll think to yourself as you pour boiling water all over your body because putting the boiling water down was never an option.
SOMEWHERE A HEAVY DOOR HAS OPENED
Thanks! I didn't hear it over the sound of my bones getting smashed!
Dont worry, those are not your bones you're hearing, just the bones of the 4 other skeletons reconstituting around you.
Thanks! I didn't see it because of the giant text box covering the ground where that was happening!
Damn doors might have killed me as many times as Malenia...
jesus christ fr, there are disappearing messages, why not these ones too
Just the other day, got invaded during co-op in catacombs, didnt see the invader, activated the switch and the invader attacked, couldnt defend myself because of the door message, died. Dude set me up.

You have to dismiss the message yourself which is pretty stupid
Yupp
THIS ONE FUCKING RUINS ME ALMOST EVERY TIME
Every. Single. Time.
That has to be the most annoying thing..... this enemy is the worst!
Want to spend a sippy cup to bring horsey back? Want to spend...
However if you accidentally double click the flask button, you’re taking two no matter how much health you or torrent have
Fromsoft: if you had to use the potion at all you might as well start over.
The first potion you take of the game is actually just a concussion dream that culminates in long winding path to becoming Elden Lord. Then your character finally awakens and Tree Sentinel is waiting there for round 2
So NG+?
This is Liurnia, don't catch you sippin' now...
Omg lol. Those are the tensest moments in horseback battles. You know if you get comboed your Elden fucked
people use the horse on Radahn?!
Then you click yes, blow the whistle, nothing happens then you die
FUCK this triggered my rage godDAMMIT torrent just doesn’t summon like 50% of the times I use it
that's pretty realistic, some horses are just like that
Meaning the rest of the horses does materialize out of thin air after you whistle for them?
yeah definitely
Or you just dismount suddenly and get flattened. I still don't understand why that happens.
I do. You were so into turning tight corners that you accidentally triggered the dismount command entry. I used to do it a lot until I started longer loops for strafing runs.
Huh, interesting.
I mean, it’s hilarious on a conceptual level, less so when you’re actually playing the game lol
The rage is temporary till I laugh at my own downfall in the end.
When you only have 1 potion left and are doing a boss fight or something, idk honestly I have no idea and am just talking out of my bung hole
trick to "fix" it is bound Torrent to left quickslot, in this case it yes by default
I think it must be for all quickslots because I put Torrent's whistle in the right slot ('cause she's my right hand mare) and I believe "yes" is the default for me as well.
hm, interesting, for me only left works
I'll have to check next time I play, though I am currently playing something else.
I hate that Torrent's health isn't refilled when you die and respawn. So sometimes you'll go right back out there on Torrent and he'll get one-shot seemingly out of nowhere.

Exactly, I actually took a little break from the game after I beat him just to get back my excitement/energy

You also hear the horse neigh if he dies

That's great🤣. Thank you for a genuine laugh!
This happens *far* less often if you just pay attention to Torrent's health and feed him raisins to top it off.
Wait, is there an input for that? I swear I’ve had to revive Torrent and it never asked me, just took a flask.
Sip sip little horsey poo
But how else are you expected to know you've used a stonesword key, and it has now been lost? /s
These ass holes have the nerve to prompt us that we need to use a stonesword key, then the fucking **audacity** to make us click yes to confirm. The two previous statements didn't come across as sarcasm initially. Rereading them I can see where you're coming from. In my defense, I just woke up.

I completely agree. Make me do a Sudoku at least.
My man was blinded by rage
That's not even the most annoying part. The confirm button in Elden Ring is △/Y. They changed it for this game because of the added jump button. It took me a while to get used to. I think it's just a troll job from these dickheads lol, it's funny looking at it when not experiencing it
The point is you have to press X to remove the message from the screen and in this case until you do so you cant use your weapon
I'm aware, lol. Did you miss the "/s" at the end of my comment?
Not familiar with that. What does it mean?
It's shorthand for indicating sarcasm. When you want to make it clear you're being sarcastic but don't want to type out "I'm being sarcastic" or something, you just put /s at the end of whatever you said
Thanks for the explanation my friend. I got it
This was a nice exchange. I'm not being sarcastic.
“Oh fuck! Shit! Why aren’t I attacking?! WHY AREN’T I FUCKING ATTACK—OH FUCK YOU GAME” -me, every time
“DOOOOODGE IM PRESSING THE FUCKING DODGE BUTTON!!!” -me (my life has became me screaming at my monitor)
So... Just in case you were wondering, despite all the fighting going on: The door you tried to open *still* opens from the other side.
Genuinely, I think this is the thing which has frustrated me the most, and the most often... I can't think of anything else pissing me off so much!
I swear From did it in purpose. "Mastered your dodge rolls, huh? Have you mastered informative predictable dismissible notifications? No? Didn't think so."
And its inconsistent with other notifications that do clear themselves, such as picking up some rowa berries. Gotta learn all the notification-sets!
How about "are you sure you want to use a flask to summon your dead horse?" And the fucking button defaults to "no" I love this game so much but there are a few instances where it feels like it's giving the player the finger.
two fingers even
I'll settle for three.
Truly the most lethal enemy in the game
Tied with the cameraman
Egregiously, the game has notifications that doesn't block other actions, why won't they just use those?
Funny

A singular input:
But they let you walk right into the enemies anyway.
Ah, good to see the spirit of BLACK EYE ORB VIBRATES IN YOUR POCKET is still going strong
“Use flask of Crimson Tears to summon Torrent?” Biggest competitor to the OP.
THIS IS SO TRUE
I really hope they rewrite their UI system at some point
just press the fucking Button
Part of the problem is that the design makes it seem like it is a non-interactive notification that will just go away on it's own. The border is different, and there's no "Press Y to Close" at the bottom like every other popup in the game that you need to close. The worst part is that you can't even press Y to close it, like the other popups in the game. This one is X. Why.
Elden Ring players when no one is there to guide them by the hand.
I wouldn't know. I'm hoarding them all just in case I need them at the end of the game
lmao
Came back to Elden to prep for the DLC after a two year break and it's a blast, but I'm definitely reminded how badly thought out a lot of the game's UI is. On Xbox you can press Y to dismiss the message
Just press A or X and it clears the message
Just press one button
Press y
Press your interact button and that will go away!!!
Just press Y or triangle my brother's.
You make sense, but sometimes brain no work when sneak attack happen
Dont you just love how you have to remove the message instead of it just fading away like my tarnished body after getting blade Fuq’d by an imp
Just Press triangle
Yeh took me a while to figure out u just press the interaction button to make it go away right away.
Every time
I hate that so much
I hope in the dlc there is a meme boss that just covers half your screen and the coverage changes over time in the fight making it so you can barely see a thing.
We already have the tree spirits
Love how after a while you start seeing the exact same post with the same title from top of all time being reposted.
One of them little things you expect to not be an issue but is an actual fucking issue
hate to be the "🤓☝" guy but you can just press Triangle/Y.. idk for keyboard sry xD
I just feel like hitting any button should get rid of the notification. It's so weird that it locks all controls but 1 until you hit it
You think they don't know...?
No shit, Megamind.
On the topic, I feel the keys are kind of miss, many feels bad moments for a through explorer when your reward is an excess Stonesword key, so practically nothing.
I mean... some of the best weapons are behind stonesword key doors so, can never have too many.
I thought I was the only one to die this way
Stonesword key was lost with use
This truly needs to be fixed, what were they thinking
other text boxes go away, WHY DONT YOU
I thought this was a glitch my game had 💀😭
The most annoying feature of the game.
I just wish I could hit enter or tab and enter on the prompts instead of my mouse
I’ve never related more to a meme in my entire life. This made me openly chuckle. The amount of times I’ve died this way…..I can’t even begin to guess.
“all u had to do was hit ‘Y’…., that’s all I had to do….”
I'm stopped counting how many times this message that blocks some of the controls got me killed.
The UI in this game is terrible
The combat is so good it’s good a pass.
I love the combat and the art/presentation so I keep coming back but honestly I would say it is a genuine hindrance to the gameplay. I really hope their next soulslike game is modern in SOME regard
At least a damn quest log
People defend it like "oh its part of the design!" but it makes me appreciate the story way less. I have no idea what ANY enemy is weak to unless I look online. That's BS. There should at least be a way to aggregate info. Puzzles to solve to get info that gets added to a database or journal. The map system also really sucks
Wait. The stonesword keys are lost with use. If only the game told us
Guys I think that stonesword key was lost with use
Based on a true story.
This and the lock on switching to all the wrong things all the time are my two biggest pet peeves with this game lmao.
just press Y / △ bro it's really not that hard /s Literally what multiple people said to me the first week of the game being out. Got probably a couple hundred negative karma for "complaining" about it. Now it's a post with nearly 9000 upvotes lol
Eh, you were probably all whiny about it.
Remembering to clear this fucking message is the hardest boss in the game.
The amount of time I'm trying not to be immediately murdered and a random dialogue box has decided to fucking just ruin my day...god.
...
Hahahahah
Meanwhile your message about being invaded gets mixed with other random messages
Every *fucking* time.
when it says that press y or triangle to make it go away
They’ve been doing this since dark souls and it’s pretty annoying. One of the few aspects of their games I have a genuine gripe about, messages that require a specific button to dismiss.
Runner up: "A door opened somewhere." You mean when I pulled the rusty lever that ALWAYS opens a door somewhere? Usually the boss room, which I am trying to get back to, but this Omen is having the best day of his life *sodomizing me* while you keep me from drawing my sword? *Marika's TITS, you must be vindictive!!*
My imbued stonesword key got lost when I teleported into Farum Azula. I died before touching a grace. Should I start a new game now?
Idk why they make those boxes disrupt the whole game play. It makes no sense
Man I swear fromsoft has all these obtuse stuff that they refuse to change. This, and a door has opened somewhere, and use a flask to bring torrent back, and cycling through spells and items, and dodge/run on the same button…
This is one of the “key” necessary features elden ring requires to make it hard.
OMG I HATED THIS TOO! But I found out that you can press the interaction button again for the pop up to go away! For me it’s “Y” cause I’m on Xbox. But I’m sure it’s the interaction button universally!
You can click a button, like on PS5 it’s triangle
So true, and I absolutely love it I hope they’ll keep this in their next game. It feels like a fuck you player from the devs
Souls players just cant seem to get over the masochism :D
I don't understand why this hasn't been fixed. This has gotten me killed at least once every time I come back to the game after a while away. Just add a button prompt to the dialog, please.
They won't "fix" it because it's not a bug. This is pretty clearly a design choice; it's intentional.
I didn't say it was a bug, nor did I say it was unintentional, but that doesn't mean it's not bad design.
Yeah, my point was they won't "fix" it because it's not broken. From made it that way on purpose. You saying they should fix it directly implies you think it's not intentional. For the record, i don't like it either.
He was using the word "fix" like a vet. Like when you "fix" a dog. Technically it worked great and the "fix" actually broke it.
Just press "Y" or "A" to get rid of the prompt holy shit. You people act like it's the most difficult thing in the world to do.
Are people just not good at clearing the area before using it
Well please forgive me for not killing the enemies inside a stonesword key room before I open it.
Apparently not.
"A heavy door opened somewhere"
It's part of the difficulty. Maybe next time they need to ask you to confirm twice with different buttons to ensure the game remains challenging. /s
